This course combines theory with hands-on practical skills via an industry placement or research project – ensuring you graduate with the right skills increasingly being sought by banks and other financial institutions.

The Master of Financial Mathematics offers advanced training in the core areas of stochastic, financial and insurance modelling, statistical analysis and computational methodology, as well as in a wide range of elective topics from economics, econometrics, finance, mathematics and probability.

Graduates of this course are likely to enter specialist careers in research departments within banks, insurance and consultancy firms or derivatives of valuation and portfolio management within investment houses.

Course Structure

The course is structured in three Parts. Part A. Orientation studies, Part B. Specialist studies, Part C. Applied professional practice. All students complete Part B. Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A or Part C or a combination of the two.

Part A. Orientation studies
These studies provide an orientation to the field of Financial Mathematics. You will choose studies that complement your current knowledge relevant to financial mathematics, including principles of econometrics, mathematical methods and stochastic processes.

Part B. Specialist studies
These studies will provide you with advanced knowledge and skills relevant to thoughtful, innovative and evidence-based practice in financial modelling and analysis. You will acquire core knowledge of and skills in financial econometrics, and advanced mathematical modelling and computational methods in finance. You will complement these with study in areas of your choice, including interest rate modelling, Markov processes, statistical learning in finance, and global financial markets.

Part C. Applied professional practice
These studies will provide you with the opportunity to apply your knowledge skills developed in Part A and B to "real life" problems, through completing an industry project or an industry internship. Students admitted to the course who have a recognised honours degree or graduate diploma or graduate certificate in a cognate discipline including mathematics or statistics, will receive credit for this part however, should they wish to complete a 24 point research project as part of Part B they should consult with the course convenor.

This programme involves both taught classes in Pure Mathematics and a substantial MRes thesis which accounts for almost two-thirds of the total degree. The minimum period of registration is 12 months.

The MRes is an ideal preparation for entry into the PhD programme at Birmingham or at any other UK university. Indeed, the MRes programme can be used as the first phase of our fast track PhD programme. This is an excellent option for well-qualified mathematics students who do not have all the necessary mathematical background to start immediately on a PhD in their area of choice. In the fast track programme the MRes thesis is extended over a further period of two years into a PhD thesis.

Each MRes student is assigned a project supervisor who will act as director and mentor in the preparation of the MRes thesis. This gives each student the opportunity to work one-to-one with mathematicians who are international experts in their fields.

In addition to the assessed elements of the course, students are expected to play a full part in the research life of the School. The School has an active seminar programme, and organises international conferences in all areas of mathematics.

The School of Mathematics is one of seven schools in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. The school is situated in the Watson Building on the main Edgbaston campus of the University of Birmingham. This course, commonly referred to as Part III, is a one-year taught Master's course in mathematics. It is an excellent preparation for mathematical research and it is also a valuable course in mathematics and in its applications for those who want further training before taking posts in industry, teaching, or research establishments.

Students admitted from outside Cambridge to Part III study towards the Master of Advanced Study (MASt). Students continuing from the Cambridge Tripos for a fourth year, study towards the Master of Mathematics (MMath). The requirements and course structure for Part III are the same for all students irrespective of whether they are studying for the MASt or MMath degree.

There are over 200 Part III (MASt and MMath) students each year; almost all are in their fourth or fifth year of university studies. There are normally about 80 courses, covering an extensive range of pure mathematics, probability, statistics and the mathematics of operational research, applied mathematics and theoretical physics. They are designed to cover those advanced parts of the subjects that are not normally covered in a first degree course, but which are an indispensable preliminary to independent study and research. Students have a wide choice of the combination of courses that they offer, though naturally they tend to select groups of cognate courses. Normally classes are provided as back-up to lecture courses.

Course detail

The structure of Part III is such that students prepare between six and nine lecture courses for examination. These lecture courses may be selected from the wide range offered by both Mathematics Departments. As an alternative to one lecture course, an essay may be submitted. Examinations usually begin in late May, and are scheduled in morning and afternoon sessions, over a period of about two weeks. Two or three hours are allocated per paper, depending on the subject. Details of the courses for the current academic year are available on the Faculty of Mathematics website. Details for subsequent years are expected to be broadly similar, although not identical.

Most courses in the Part III are self-contained. Students may freely mix courses offered by the two Mathematics Departments. Courses are worth either two or three credit units depending on whether they last for 16 or 24 lectures respectively. Candidates for Part III may offer a maximum of 19 credit units for examination. In the past it has been recommended that candidates offer between 17 and 19 units. An essay (should a candidate choose to submit one) counts for 3 credit units. Part III is graded Distinction, Merit, Pass or Fail. A Merit or above is the equivalent of a First Class in other Parts of the Mathematical Tripos.

Learning Outcomes

After completing Part III, students will be expected to have:

- Studied advanced material in the mathematical sciences to a level not normally covered in a first degree;
- Further developed the capacity for independent study of mathematics and problem solving at a higher level;
- Undertaken (in most cases) an extended essay normally chosen from a list covering a wide range of topics.

Students are also expected to have acquired general transferable skills relevant to mathematics as outlined in the Faculty Transferable Skills Statement http://www.maths.cam.ac.uk/undergrad/course/transferable_skills.pdf .

Format

Courses are delivered predominantly by either 16 or 24 hours of formal lectures, supported by additional examples classes. As an alternative to one lecture course, an essay may be submitted. There is also the possibility of taking a reading course for examination. There are normally additional non-examinable courses taught each year.

Essay supervision and support for lectures by means of examples classes is approximately 30 hours per year.

Formal examinable lectures and non-examinable lectures total approximately 184 hours per year, of which on average 112 hours are for examinable courses.

Some statistics courses may involve practical data analysis sessions.

There is an opportunity to participate in the Part III seminar series, either by giving a talk or through attendance. This is encouraged but does not contribute to the formal assessment.

Twice a year students have an individual meeting with a member of academic staff to discuss their progress in Part III. Students offering an essay as part of their degree may meet their essay supervisor up to three times during the academic year.

Assessment

Candidates may substitute an essay for one lecture course. The essay counts for 3 credit units.

Lecture courses are assessed by formal examination. Courses are worth either two or three credit units depending on whether they are 16 or 24 hours in length respectively. A 16 hour course is assessed by a 2 hour examination and a 24 hour course, a 3 hour examination. Candidates for Part III may offer a maximum of 19 credit units for examination. More about this course

The course will cover higher level GCSE level and early A level Pure Mathematics and Statistics. There will be mathematical modules on: Algebra of Polynomial Functions and Equations, Trigonometry and Continuous Functions, Calculus, Data Handling and Statistics, Euclidean Geometry. An introduction to educational issues will include reading, films, and an introduction to current issues in education policy.

We will use mathematics materials which are commonly used in classrooms to promote interactive engagement in mathematics including group work and extensive use of ICT. The course will include an introduction to relevant themes in teaching and learning which will also develop reading and writing skills necessary for the PGCE. There will be a two week school placement where you will have an opportunity to observe and participate in classroom mathematics.

The course will be assessed by a continuous assessment portfolio and a final examination. The portfolio will include mathematical tasks, written assignments, a profile of the school placement and work designed to practice specific areas of the curriculum. The final examination will include a GCSE Higher Mathematics paper (calculator and non-calculator papers) and a paper of relevant questions of A-level standard.

Professional accreditation

The course is funded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL), and London Met is approved to provide SKE with NCTL funding for either maths or French.

Modular structure

The twelve-week course will be based at the University for four days each week Tuesday to Friday, with the exception of a two week placement in schools which will be arranged for you. You will be following a course which focusses on the content of higher GCSE level and early A level Pure Mathematics and Statistics.

There will be mathematical modules on: Algebra of Polynomial Functions and Equations, Trigonometry and Continuous Functions, Calculus, Data Handling and Euclidean Statistics, and Geometry. An introduction to educational issues will include reading, films, and an introduction to current issues in education policy. There will be a 2 week placement in a mathematics department in a secondary school.

You will learn mathematics in a variety of ways including mathematics software, group work and by following targets tailored to your own needs. Learning mathematics in these ways will give you first-hand experience of the pedagogies which you will use in the PGCE course. The school placement will give you the chance to see mathematics teaching in a school and you will, by completing specially designed evaluation tasks, develop reading and writing skills necessary for the PGCE. Throughout the course there will be regular tutorials to monitor your progress and provide help and guidance to make the London Met maths enhancement course a successful first step in your teaching career.

Funding

Our Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses (SKEs) are 12 weeks long. Your fees are paid by the National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). In addition, you will receive a bursary of £2,400 or £800 per month. More information on Enhancement Courses is available from the DfE.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

already obtained a first degree with substantial mathematical content. Students successfully completing the MSc will acquire specialist knowledge in their chosen areas of mathematics, and the MSc is an excellent preparation for those who are considering pursuing research in mathematics.

The main areas of mathematics that may be pursued within this MSc are pure mathematics (especially algebra and combinatorics), dynamical systems, probability and statistics, and astronomy. The MSc programme is very flexible, and in consultation with your academic adviser you may choose modules in different areas or specialise in one.

Programme outline
You will normally take eight modules in total, with one module typically comprising 24 hours of lectures and 12 hours of tutorials given during a twelve-week semester. In addition to the MSc modules offered at Queen Mary, you can also choose from an extremely wide range of advanced mathematics modules offered at other Colleges of the University of London. During the summer period, supervised by an academic member of staff, you are required to complete a dissertation, working largely independently in an advanced topic in mathematics or statistics.

Building services engineers are responsible for the mechanical and electrical systems that contribute to people's comfort, health and productivity. They provide analytic and design skills to buildings of all scales and levels of complexity, from residential and commercial, to industrial and cultural.

With greater efficiency constantly being sought in the use of energy and materials (for environmental and economic reasons) there is a growing demand for a new generation of environmentally responsible buildings. Currently however, the field of architecture and engineering is facing a deficit of people with the right type of expertise. In response, this full time Masters course has been created to provide a route through which STEM graduates (or people with relevant experience) can align their skills with the needs of the profession.

Course detail

The MSc Building Services Engineering is suitable for graduates with degrees in technological subjects (such as mechanical, aeronautical, civil and automotive engineering), or maths or science graduates. Graduates of the pure sciences will be recommended to enter the MSc course through the pathway offering some preparatory grounding in relevant technical subjects.

In developing the skills to practice as a building services professional, you will learn about the relevant technologies and methods of the discipline, and will be introduced to themes related to management and professional conduct within an engineering context.

Format

Input from industry practitioners as well as other interdisciplinary professionals is a key part of the course. Along with field trips to working sites, this will help you develop an understanding of how to apply the concepts and principles to real world situations and projects.

Through project work, group work, hands-on practice and theory, you will gain the skills needed to make a positive impact on the places where people live, study and work.

Much of the teaching will focus around a studio-based engineering design project under the guidance and critique of your tutor. There will also be traditional teacher-led classroom delivery supported by online materials.

Assessment

We use a range of assessment tools throughout the course, including exams, coursework, presentations, lab reports and portfolio development.

Careers / Further study

A career in building services engineering is likely to be varied, analytical and inventive. This Masters will equip you with the knowledge and experience needed to step into a wide range of roles, including Building Services Consulting Engineer, Mechanical Building Services Design Engineer, Sustainability Engineer and MEP Construction Engineer.

This degree is designed primarily for students with no previous specialisation in marine science such as graduates with a degree in biological sciences, chemistry or materials science, physics, maths, environmental science, physical geography or related disciplines. The programme includes compulsory introductory modules that provide a foundation in interdisciplinary marine science, along with the opportunity to specialise in particular areas through an option of modules, as well as research project experience with marine scientists at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS). To highlight the specialisations possible, we have developed “pathways” of suggested module choices, which include: Marine Biology and Ecology; Physical Oceanography and Climate Dynamics; Marine Biogeochemistry; Marine Geology and Geophysics; Marine Resources and Law

Students can either follow one of these “pathways”, or mix options from different pathways, where the timetable allows, to pursue broader interests. Employment in the marine environmental sector is a common destination for MSc Oceanography graduates, and as the degree is a “conversion” to marine science from “pure” science backgrounds, around one-third of graduates also go on to PhD research in marine sciences.

This course is designed to build on existing mathematical skills and allow students from a wide range of backgrounds to both broaden and deepen their understanding of their chosen branch of mathematics. The course allows specialisation in areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics or statistics and allows the flexibility to cover a range of areas or to concentrate in one specific area.

There are a range of taught modules to choose from which provide the opportunity to combine mainstream, advanced maths topics and innovative methods selected from the research interests of the School of Mathematics.

The programme provides a a solid training in mainstream mathematics and will give you an insight into modern developments in mathematics.

As part of the course you will have to complete an individual research project (dissertation.) This will contribute to 60 credits on the course. The dissertation will be assessed based on 85% from the written report, and 15% from an oral presentation. You must enrol on 180 credits in total.

Mathematics is not only central to science, technology and finance-related fields, but the logical insight, analytical skills and intellectual discipline gained from a mathematical education are highly sought after in a broad range of other areas such as law, business and management.

Financial Mathematics is a branch of Mathematics where advanced mathematical and statistical methods are developed for and applied to financial markets and financial management. Its main aims are to quantify and hedge risks in the financial marketplace.

Effective computational methods are crucial for the successful use of mathematical modelling in finance. The MSc in Financial and Computational Mathematics is designed to reflect this combination of knowledge and skills so that its graduates are well equipped to enter the competitive job markets of quantitative finance and related fields.

The course is focused on computational techniques and mathematical modelling used in the financial industry and on the required background in finance. The course is provided by the School of Mathematical Sciences with valuable input from the School of Economics. To ensure that the degree keeps pace with changes in employer expectations and employment opportunities, the course has its own advisory board which consists of leading experts from the financial industry and academia.

This course, commonly referred to as Part III, is a one-year taught Master's course in mathematics. It is an excellent preparation for mathematical research and it is also a valuable course in mathematics and in its applications for those who want further training before taking posts in industry, teaching, or research establishments.

Students admitted from outside Cambridge to Part III study towards the Master of Advanced Study (MASt). Students continuing from the Cambridge Tripos for a fourth year, study towards the Master of Mathematics (MMath). The requirements and course structure for Part III are the same for all students irrespective of whether they are studying for the MASt or MMath degree.

There are over 200 Part III (MASt and MMath) students each year; almost all are in their fourth or fifth year of university studies. There are normally about 80 courses, covering an extensive range of pure mathematics, probability, statistics and the mathematics of operational research, applied mathematics and theoretical physics. They are designed to cover those advanced parts of the subjects that are not normally covered in a first degree course, but which are an indispensable preliminary to independent study and research. Students have a wide choice of the combination of courses that they offer, though naturally they tend to select groups of cognate courses. Normally classes are provided as back-up to lecture courses.

Course detail

The structure of Part III is such that students prepare between six and nine lecture courses for examination. These lecture courses may be selected from the wide range offered by both Mathematics Departments. As an alternative to one lecture course, an essay may be submitted. Examinations usually begin in late May, and are scheduled in morning and afternoon sessions, over a period of about two weeks. Two or three hours are allocated per paper, depending on the subject. Details of the courses for the current academic year are available on the Faculty of Mathematics website. Details for subsequent years are expected to be broadly similar, although not identical.

Most courses in the Part III are self-contained. Students may freely mix courses offered by the two Mathematics Departments. Courses are worth either two or three credit units depending on whether they last for 16 or 24 lectures respectively. Candidates for Part III may offer a maximum of 19 credit units for examination. In the past it has been recommended that candidates offer between 17 and 19 units. An essay (should a candidate choose to submit one) counts for 3 credit units. Part III is graded Distinction, Merit, Pass or Fail. A Merit or above is the equivalent of a First Class in other Parts of the Mathematical Tripos.

Learning Outcomes

After completing Part III, students will be expected to have:

- Studied advanced material in the mathematical sciences to a level not normally covered in a first degree;
- Further developed the capacity for independent study of mathematics and problem solving at a higher level;
- Undertaken (in most cases) an extended essay normally chosen from a list covering a wide range of topics.

Students are also expected to have acquired general transferable skills relevant to mathematics as outlined in the Faculty

Format

Courses are delivered predominantly by either 16 or 24 hours of formal lectures, supported by additional examples classes. As an alternative to one lecture course, an essay may be submitted. Twice a year students have an individual meeting with a member of academic staff to discuss their progress in Part III. Students offering an essay as part of their degree may meet their essay supervisor up to three times during the academic year.

Assessment

Candidates may substitute an essay for one lecture course. The essay counts for 3 credit units.

Lecture courses are assessed by formal examination. Courses are worth either two or three credit units depending on whether they are 16 or 24 hours in length respectively. A 16 hour course is assessed by a 2 hour examination and a 24 hour course, a 3 hour examination. Candidates for Part III may offer a maximum of 19 credit units for examination. In the past it has been recommended that candidates offer between 17 and 19 units.

Continuing

MASt students wishing to apply for the PhD must apply via the Graduate Admissions Office for readmission by the relevant deadline. Applicants will be considered on a case by case basis and offer of a place will usually include an academic condition on their Part III result.
