The Master of Arts program in Mathematics is designed to develop the student’s ability to work independently and to obtain basic knowledge in algebra, real and complex variables, and topology so that mathematics literature can be read with understanding and enjoyment. The successful completion of this program should prepare a student to enter a second-year doctoral program in mathematics, to begin a career as an industrial mathematician or as a faculty member at a junior or community college. Program start dates: Fall or Spring (in certain cases).

Master's specialisation in Algebra and Topology

The Algebra and Topology section is an active research group consisting of renowned experts covering a remarkably broad range of topics. The group consists of two full professors (I. Moerdijk, Spinoza Laureate 2012, and B. Moonen), four permanent members, and a large number of post-docs and PhD students. The section offers a Master's specialisation in Algebra in Topology, which is a 2-year programme aimed at students with an interest in pure mathematics and its applications.
The Master's programme has a strong focus on current research developments. It introduces students to a broad range of techniques and concepts that play a central role in modern mathematics. In addition to providing a strong theoretical basis, the programme offers excellent opportunities for a further specialisation focusing on applications of pure mathematics or on interactions with other fields.
The programme offers courses in Algebra, Topology, Geometry, Number Theory, and Logic and Computation. There are strong interactions with other Master's specialisations at Radboud University, notably the ones in Mathematical Physics and in Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science.
In addition, the programme offers a variety of seminars from beginning Master's level to research level. Moreover, students have the possibility to incorporate courses from related programmes (e.g. Mathematical Physics and Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science into their programme, as well as individual reading courses. Each student concludes his programme by studying a special topic and writing a Master's thesis about it.
Excellent students having completed this Master's programme or a similar programme elsewhere can in principle continue and enrol in the PhD Programme, but admission for this is limited and highly selective.

Admission requirements for international students

1. A completed Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or related area
Entering the Master’s programme in Mathematics requires a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics that is the equivalent to a Dutch university diploma (this does not include a Bachelor’s from a university of applied science, in Dutch hbo; in German Fachhochschule). That means we expect you to have a solid background in the core areas groups, rings, fields and topology. We expect students to have passed core mathematics courses during their Bachelor’s in:
The Examination Board will determine if an international student has the required mathematical knowledge to be admitted. The Examination Board will also indicate if the student is required to follow specific courses from the Bachelor's programme to eliminate possible deficiencies.

2. A proficiency in English
In order to take part in this programme, you need to have fluency in both written and spoken English. Non-native speakers of English without a Dutch Bachelor's degree or VWO diploma need one of the following:

- An IELTS score of ≥6.5
- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) with a mark of C or higher

A Master’s in Mathematics will show prospective employers that you have perseverance, patience and an eye for detail as well as a high level of specialised analytical and problem-solving skills.

Degree Plans

A total of 30 hours of graduate work is required to obtain a master’s degree in mathematics. Candidates for the master’s degree may choose one of two plans:

Plan I requires successful completion of 24 semester hours of course work, plus a thesis supervised by a graduate faculty in mathematics. Students completing this plan will enroll in 6 hours of MATH 599: Thesis Research. A copy of your thesis or project must be available to each committee member at least two weeks prior to the presentation.

Plan II requires no thesis, but 27 semester hours of courses plus 3 hours of research (MATH 598: Non-Thesis Project) devoted to a project supervised by a member of the graduate faculty in mathematics. A copy of the master’s degree approved project or thesis must be provided to mathematics department.

There is also a one-year or three-semester master’s degree program. The graduate program director can provide further information.

Concentrations

Candidates for the master’s degree in mathematics can specialize in pure or applied mathematics, mathematics education, or mathematics finance.

This course is designed to build on your existing mathematical skills and allows you to both broaden and deepen your understanding of the branch or branches of mathematics which most interest you.

The flexibility of this course allows you to either keep your studies quite broad, learning a range of mathematical techniques or specialise in areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics or statistics depending on your interests.

If you do not meet the full academic entry requirements then you may wish to consider the Graduate Diploma in Mathematics. This course is aimed at students who would like to study for a mathematics related MSc course but do not currently meet the entry requirements.

On completion of the Graduate Diploma, students who meet the required performance level will be eligible for entry onto a number of related MSc courses, in the following academic year.

Course content

There are a range of taught modules to choose from which provide the opportunity to combine mainstream, advanced mathematical topics and innovative methods selected from the research interests of the School of Mathematics.

You must enrol on 180 or 185 credits in total, made up from both taught modules and an individual research project.

Learning and teaching

Teaching is by lectures, tutorials, seminars and supervised research projects. Extensive use is made of IT and a wide range of materials is available to enable students to study at their own pace and in their own time to enhance and extend the material taught formally.

Assessment

Assessment is by a range of methods, including formal examination, in-class tests, example sheets, problem solving, project work and verbal presentations.

The research project will be assessed based on 85% from the written report, and 15% from an oral presentation. It will contribute 60 credits to the overall total.

Career opportunities

There is a high demand for mathematicians and statisticians across a range of sectors such as the petroleum and nuclear industries, medicine and IT, as well as many forms of engineering and different government departments.

Further study at Masters level can be useful for some maths-related careers such as operational research, medical statistics in pharmaceutical companies, meteorology, engineering design, finance and IT-based roles.

Common Careers paths for Maths graduates include:

Actuary

Actuaries evaluate, manage and advise on financial risks. They use their knowledge of business and economics, together with their understanding of probability theory, statistics and investment theory, to provide strategic, commercial and financial advice.

Operational Research

Operational researchers use analytical and creative skills to assist organisations in developing better systems and operational procedures. By examining an organisation's operations and using mathematical modelling, computer software or other analytical approaches, they find more effective ways of working.

Corporate investment banker

Corporate investment bankers provide a range of financial services to companies, institutions and governments. They manage corporate, strategic and financial opportunities, including:

  • privatisations
  • initial public offerings (IPOs)

Corporate investment bankers also advise and lead management buyouts, raise capital, provide strategic advice to clients, and identify and secure new deals

Quantity Surveyor

A quantity surveyor manages all costs relating to building and civil engineering projects, from the initial calculations to the final figures. Surveyors seek to minimise the costs of a project and enhance value for money, while still achieving the required standards and quality.

Meteorologist

Meteorologists study the causes of particular weather conditions using information obtained from the land, sea and upper atmosphere. They use computerised and mathematical models to make short and long-range forecasts concerning weather and climate patterns.

Further study

This MSc in Mathematics will provide you with excellent preparation for research for an MPhil or PhD. At Leeds we have a range of research opportunities available and in some cases you can progress to a PhD on the basis of a specified performance in the MSc.
