This programme provides an excellent overview of every aspect of publishing, with an emphasis on digital publishing. The MA in Digital Publishing combines theory with practice and provides scope to develop specialist skills required for career development. You will graduate with a broad understanding of the key issues facing the publishing industry in the 21st century and a wide range of publishing and general management skills, including advanced IT skills, to help you succeed in the industry.

Digital Publishing is part of a group of publishing courses, run by the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies (within the School of Arts), which enjoy a high international standing in the publishing world. We have close links with publishing companies in Oxford and London, and staff have extensive experience in national and international publishing roles.

Teaching and learning

Some of the key teaching methods we use are:

  • lectures that provide you with foundation knowledge and a framework for study that will enable you to achieve the module's learning outcomes
  • seminars and workshops that encourage you to engage in discussion with tutors and peers to test your understanding and ability to apply ideas, to develop your transferable skills, and to encourage deeper learning

Approach to assessment

Assessment is primarily by coursework. A limited number of class tests assess your skills in applying marketing terms and in proof reading.

Assignments in all modules are designed to assess your knowledge and skills developed during the period of study. These closely align with industry practice so that through the programme you gain in confidence in your ability to complete live publishing projects. After successfully completing the programme you are ready to enter the publishing industry as an effective employee.

Delivery and assessment

The MLitt in Publishing Studies is delivered through interactive lectures, seminars, workshops (including sessions in the Publishing Computer Lab) and one-to-one teaching.
Assessment is based on a range of practical and academic activities, including the creation of a physical publishing product (a book, magazine, e-book or app), marketing plans, presentations, and a dissertation. Located in the heart of London, the global centre of this creative, dynamic industry, this MA explores how publishing is evolving in the face of digitisation.

The programme provides you with an applied understanding of how books, journals, magazines and interactive resources are conceived, developed and marketed, including the key role of authorship.

You will be encouraged to explore whether your interests lie in publishing for entertainment, education, research or information. Alongside research-led analytical assignments, you will develop a portfolio of achievements relating to the global industry which reflect the range of professional roles in contemporary publishing, including editorial, marketing, production, and both print and digital content development.

Placements

MSc Publishing works closely with the Professional Publishers Association (PPA), and was recently awarded the prestigious Creative Skillset Tick. Edinburgh Napier is the only University to have doubly accredited postgraduate Publishing provision.

Who is it for?

This course will appeal to both experienced and new writers who wish to gain the knowledge and skills relevant to professional practice in commercial settings which produce creative content for print and across digital formats. You will also be introduced to the rapidly developing world of self-publishing. A digital publishing element will teach you how social media and web publishing is now vital to finding and sustaining your own community of readers.

The target market for the programme is young graduates who are seeking to exploit the potential of a humanities degree through modules that focus on their creative writing and on publishing. It is ideal for anyone interested in getting hands-on practice experience and an insider’s perspective on the publishing industry while developing their creative practice.

Objectives

If you have experience of writing or working in publishing (or a related field), and would like to develop your skills further, this course is designed for you. If you are interested in learning how you, as a writer, can engage with the publishing industry and even work within it, this course will develop the skills you need. Creative Writing and Publishing MA enables you to aspire to a professional role that will match your interests and draw upon all of your talents. We welcome writers of all genres with recent graduates developing projects in fantasy, romance, science fiction and young adult fiction.

Placements

An optional professional placement module in terms 2 and 3 runs between January and June, for a period of at least 24 days. This provides students with practical experience of working within a publishing environment, enhancing their classroom learning.

While on placement, you will meet the hosts' standard arrangements for work placement interns and will carry out tasks or projects as agreed with your placement host.

Teaching and learning

You will learn through a mix of formal lectures, writing workshops, individual tutorials, group project work, seminar contributions, study visits, work attachments, project work and independent learning and research. Visiting speakers, including guest authors, regularly support your learning and module projects. You are encouraged, through a variety of strategies, to reflect on professional practice and professional frameworks during all of your applied work.

You will acquire attitudes and values through your interactions with lecturers, many of whom are professional writers or practicing publishers, and through a critical, reflective approach to your writing practice and to working in publishing. Leading writers act as guest tutors and mentors while senior members of the publishing industry regularly visit and often sponsor projects. Publishing and writing masterclasses also enable you to debate current issues within your field. Moodle is also embedded as a learning tool within the programme, offering you opportunities to interact with your fellow students and other programme academic staff outside of the classroom or workshop.

Your intellectual and cognitive skills will be developed through the programme’s range of learning modes, which include lectures, seminars, tutorials, coursework, the option of an assessed work placement drafts of major writing projects and short assignments and in your final project.

Your subject specific and transferable skills are developed in the modules through lectures, seminars, tutorials, coursework, an optional assessed work placement and in your major project.

Assessment

For the Creative Writing Workshop module and the Storytelling module, you will be assessed through an individual assessment, which may include a portfolio of creative writing, a substantial piece of redrafted creative writing with an accompanying self-reflective essay or a critical academic essay or a researched book proposal.

In your other modules, you will be assessed by a range of methods including analytical essays; assessed group and individual projects; presentations with supporting research; and reflective reports on your own portfolios of writing or professional experience.

The MA CWP runs over one academic year for full-time students who undertake two core creative writing modules over terms 1 and 2, alongside core publishing modules in term 1 and electives in term 2. In the final term students must complete their Major Project. The world leading MA Publishing course at London College of Communication allows you to hit the ground running. It combines theoretical and practice-based approaches to teaching and learning so you can prepare for future employment, obtaining a strategic, practical and integrated command of publishing within digital and multi-platform publishing and international contexts.

The course offers the choice of two teaching and learning specialisms: book multi-platform publishing or magazine multi-platform publishing. It is aimed at people who are aiming to advance their careers to management level within the global publishing industry. Graduates who have completed our postgraduate publishing courses since 1969 can be found throughout the world in senior positions within publishing and communications practice.

The course design and curriculum takes an integrated multiplatform stance. Digital applications are covered throughout your time at the College, across units within either chosen learning specialism. The course is led by specialist staff and enables you to take the lead in the management and production of creative content for a range of audiences via different platforms (web, digital, mobile tablets and devices and print).

Throughout the course there is an emphasis on group work, practical publishing projects and engagement with industry through leading guest speakers, visits and placements.

Our unique resources will allow you to realise the production and publishing of actual books, magazines, websites or conference events when applying publishing and project management methods in Phase two.

You will also develop the necessary research techniques to undertake a major research study or dissertation and you will complete the study of two electives. We run a number of publishing and marketing short courses which our MA Publishing students can join for free. At the end of the course, you’ll undertake a Major Project, which might be a conventional academic project, a case study based on work experience, a creative piece with critical commentary or a business plan – the choice is yours.

Our MA Publishing was developed in close consultation with Cambridge University Press and other local publishers including ProQuest and Lutterworth's, so you can be confident it meets the professional needs of the publishing industry.

Course duration: 12 months full-time or up to 3 years part-time (September starts); 17 months full-time or up to 3 years part-time (January starts).

Teaching times: Mondays and Thursdays from 6-8pm plus 1 hour per semester (full-time); Mondays 6-8pm in Year 1 and Thursdays 6-8pm in Year 2 (part-time).

This part-time programme is usually studied over two years. However, you are able to take up to 5 years to complete the necessary credits.

Four core compulsory modules make up the first year and address marketing and sales, digital production and workflow, and editorial as publishing-related topics and research skills as preparation for the later dissertation.

In the second year, you choose one module from each of two groups: either International Publishing and Rights or Independent Study; and then either Culture of Publishing, Journals or Independent Study.

The Independent Study module is specifically designed to provide you with a structured pedagogic framework in which to reflect on and develop your experience of work in publishing.

You may, however, select the Independent Study module once only.

Your programme is completed with a longer period of research and writing (about 6 months), supported by a supervisor, which culminates in a 15,000-word dissertation. The modules are as follows:

Teaching and learning

Teaching is presented in a structured modular framework of compulsory and optional modules which provide both core competencies and knowledge while offering the opportunity for you to tailor your programme. You will be encouraged through discussion forums, individual reading and investigative practices in the modules to engage actively with your study. This approach is informed by and based on the understanding that your learning should be relevant to your interests.

In presenting the learning materials online, each module clearly outlines the structure of the 10 units at the start, identifies points of increased input, discussion areas, activities and assessments enabling you to adjust your engagement with the learning, within the requirements of the module, to suit your individual timetables. Within the modules and during the course of the programme, culminating in the dissertation, your autonomy in your learning increases through structured activities that start with close guidance and build towards greater independence. Flexibility, where possible, while aiming for a cohesive and supportive group of fellow students, is built into the timetable of discussion forums, communication with associate tutors and other students.

This course is targeted at individuals who either want to start a career in publishing or who are already working and want to enhance their career with an advanced degree. If you are a recent graduate who wants to enter publishing but are unable to continue with full time study then this programme enables you to develop appropriate knowledge of the industry. Our MSc in Management and International Publishing has been designed for future managers who specifically want to develop their interest in the publishing industry while strengthening their understanding of wider business areas and concepts critical to the success of 21st-century organisations.

Our MSc in Management and International Publishing route explores the strategies behind the publishing industry and its marketing. You will analyse stakeholder and public interests, evaluate mergers and acquisitions and consider the influential role of technology.

You will gain a practical introduction to digital publishing, developing your understanding of its capabilities and what makes a successful digital publishing proposal. Finally, you will learn about the global publishing market, examining international publishing laws, copyright, moral right, authorship and ownership.

Work placement

You can choose to add a year's work placement, making your master's a two-year course. It's a great way to put your learning into practice and gain valuable real-world experience to boost your career.

We have extensive links with corporate partners who can offer placements, so we can help you find something perfect. If you undertake a placement, you must take up the Business Research Project in Semester Three. 

Study and support

Teaching and learning methods are centred around interactive workshops which are highly participative in nature and will employ case studies, discussions, business simulations and group activities.

Interactivity is key to our teaching and we are committed to providing courses that adopt teaching methods that are appropriate to the student cohort and the specific modules.

We ensure that support and guidance is in place, especially during the early stages of the course and assessment periods, to help you become comfortable with operating in a student-centred learning environment.

Assessment methods

A range of assessment methods are used across the course, the choice of which reflects the needs and demands of the different types of module. Some modules will assess the ability to work collaboratively in a team and others will assess individual capability. Types of assessment will range from examinations to group presentations including essays, reports, financial analyses, literature reviews and research-based projects.

The interactive nature of the taught sessions offers opportunities to gain feedback on your performance before being formally assessed and increasing use is made of eLearning to further support the feedback process.

Induction

All our courses begin with a comprehensive development programme that will help you prepare for your studies and develop key academic and transferable skills. A key feature is a short residential team-building course, normally in the Peak District.

You will also have opportunities to meet members of the teaching team and other postgraduate students, receive detailed programme information, and gain valuable support and guidance from the library, careers service, international office and Student Support Services.
