Our accredited Management MSc programme will prepare you for a wide range of careers in management. The Management (Public Services) MSc focuses on developing your understanding of the unique management challenges and political drivers within public services and not-for-profit organisations.
Public services often represent the largest body of employers. Together with non-profit organisations, they employ more than 20% of the workforce in many countries, and that figure is growing every year.
On this course, case studies, live client projects, company visits and the option of paid work experience help prepare you for management by putting the latest academic thinking and business strategies into practice. You will learn about the major functions of management and their integration.
All students on our Management MSc programme complete the same core modules covering the major functions of management until the end of term two, at which point you will be able to tailor the course to your individual strengths and career aspirations through option modules, the option of an additional semester to study abroad, a specialism in one of five areas or a continuation of a more generalist route with our Management MSc.

An innovative alternative to a MBA, this one-year, full-time course is designed for graduates of any subject with or without work experience. Teaching takes place over three terms, from late September to early June, with breaks after assessments in mid-December to early January and late March to mid-April.
Class attendance averages 14 to 18 hours a week, plus time for group work and independent study, with variations as you progress through the course. There are some special intensive workshops on topics such as leadership, management and research, and a one-week tutor-led international study visit to companies in another European country.
Your final project will take place over the summer after teaching finishes. Your optional work-experience based final project may continue for up to one-year past the end of teaching.

With an emphasis on understanding the political context in which public services operate, the Management (Public Services) MSc will prepare you for careers in management consultancy, change management and some areas of functional management, for example in high-tech companies as well as the public sector.
The course will also prove valuable if you are interested in starting your own business or pursuing a career as a business negotiator, commercial interpreter, lecturer or researcher.
The school also has an industrial placements office that can offer you help in seeking work experience. Those who succeed in obtaining a work placement or internship may undertake a work placement report as the basis of their final project.

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) is an internationally recognised professional postgraduate degree, which is a public sector equivalent to the Master of Business Administration (MBA). The course is targeted primarily at public service and third sector professionals. The content is relevant to both international students and those based in the UK.
The aim of the MPA is to enable learners to build on their professional experience by engaging critically with, and reflecting on, key developments in public administration in order to more effectively deliver public service outcomes in a rapidly changing environment.
The course is based on a philosophy of transformational learning and transformational change. Central to this is the role of public services in promoting social justice and equality. International examples will be used to provide thought provoking challenges to the way our public services are designed and delivered. Rather than reflect today’s public services, the state and society, this MPA aims to shape the public service landscape of tomorrow.
This MPA offers an excellent student experience and includes an innovative ‘leadership exchange’ element, working with the Association of Chief Officers of Scottish Voluntary Organisations (ACOSVO), to enable all students to participate in an appropriate exchange within another public service organisation.
The MPA offers options for both full-time and part-time study which will fit with busy working lives. This is a multidisciplinary course, with the purpose of preparing students for professional roles in the public sector. As such the delivery draws on academic expertise from a range of backgrounds such as administrative justice, public management and social policy. The input of research active academics will be complemented with expert guest speakers and visits to key public administration sites such as the Holyrood Parliament in Edinburgh, Houses of Parliament in London, Parlament de Catalunya in Barcelona and the European Parliament in Brussels. A series of academic development workshops are run alongside the taught modules to support stuents with academic writing and research methods.

The ‘leadership exchange’ element of the course is delivered in association with the Association of Chief Officers of Scottish Voluntary Organisations (ACOSVO). We are also an institutional member of the Joint University Council’'s Public Administration Committee.

Our approach to teaching and learning is participant-centred in two ways. First, the programme explores and makes links between the ideas, models and skills for public service and participants' own work experiences and organisational contexts. As a result, participants' contributions, in the form of discussion and exploration of case studies are particularly important and assist in the creation of an educational environment in which a significant component of the learning derives through interactions between programme participants.
Second, we recognise that different individuals learn best in different ways. Some will prefer lecture inputs for the frameworks, theoretical perspectives and challenge to thinking that these can provide. Others will tend to favour the more practical sessions and/or the time spent in syndicates with colleagues exchanging experiences and perspectives on issues under consideration or in addressing specific tasks, case studies and problem-solving.
Typically modules are assessed through a variety of essay-type and project-based assignments. From the outset, we provide participants with clear guidance on assessment work and individualised tutorial support is available throughout the programme to help each participant make the most of their studies with us. Participants studying at Masters level will be expected to write a dissertation – this may be linked to activities at their workplace.
Typical paths include career progression within the public sector with the participant’s aspirations being more saleable with a supporting qualification. Transferability of skills also supports participants to change organisations or pathways within public and related sectors.
The qualifications will also support postgraduates seeking an entirely new career within the public sector, such as management.
The MPA programme in the Department of Political Science offers an applied, problem-based approach, blending new theoretical developments and practice, with a view to managing public policies domestically and overseas. The MPA aims to provide participants with the practical tools and the academic knowledge that public policy managers need to implement effectively and successfully achieve their agendas.
The MPA offers a balanced coverage of a wide range of public administration topics, with a strong focus on managing public services and leadership skills. Participants are exposed to public affairs challenges usually faced by public organisations, or related non-profit and private firms. Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

Core modules will give you thorough knowledge in each key business discipline. You will then have the opportunity to tailor your MBA through a choice of specialisms and option modules.
Our part-time MBA typically takes one day per week over two to three years, or on a block basis. When studying in the block format modules can be taken in any order to suit your interests, apart from the final module.
If you want a more flexible approach, you can also sign up for one module at a time and build your qualification as you go, exiting with a Postgraduate Certificate in Management, with a Postgraduate Diploma in Management, or an MBA.

The MSc Health and Public Service Management course has been designed for professionals working in healthcare organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors. The University has a long tradition of providing high quality healthcare management courses and has successfully delivered similar postgraduate programmes for over 20 years.
During the MSc Health and Public Service Management, you will examine the challenges facing healthcare and related public service areas, making strong links between academic theory and management practice to create a relevant context. You will also specialise in a key area through your chosen dissertation topic.

Full-time study involves completing the six taught modules and a dissertation over one full academic year. You will have 12 class contact hours over two days each week – Wednesdays and Thursday between 2-8pm.
For part-time students, the taught component is delivered over two academic years, with a commitment of around six hours on one day each week. You can expect to complete the course over three academic years, but the flexible modular structure allows you to progress at your own pace and combine study with work and/or personal commitments. During the first year of the MSc you will study on Wednesdays between 2-8pm. On your second year you will study on Thursday’s between 2-8pm.
You will be assessed by coursework for each module, usually through work-based assignments that involve the application of academic theory to work practice. Coursework can range from reports to poster presentations, and even speeches.
