Course objectives

Public relations courses at the University of Stirling are designed for students from a variety of degree backgrounds to develop the appropriate intellectual skills at Master's level for a management-level career in Public Relations, Communication Management, Corporate Affairs or Public Affairs. The course helps students develop a critical appreciation of the role of public relations in society and to develop key analytical and professional skills.

Our approach is founded on the following principles:
- Public relations contributes to the effectiveness of organisations by improving organisational relationships and facilitating public conversations and debate.
- Public relations has a remit for corporate social responsibility through its issues management function and responsibility for reputation, which necessarily means that it has to help organisations change to meet new agendas of sustainability.
- Teaching strategic public relations can facilitate better public understanding of the occupation, and thus mitigate contemporary cultural stereotypes and prejudice (much fostered by journalists who have an interest in purveying negative images), as well as diffusing core concepts that can benefit Scotland’s private and public sector enterprises: small, medium and large. Improved understanding of this organisational function can aid government and NGOs in political and policy communications.
- In understanding public relations practitioners as being, in some aspects, ‘discourse workers’ it becomes easier to see that the functional role has the potential to contribute to a more enlightened and better-informed society.

Public relations takes place at points of change and moments of transformation in complex contemporary societies. Typically, public relations activity clusters around (i) public policy formation (ii) organisational change and development (iii) public issues such as the environment (iv) major global shifts such as conflict, unstable international environments, globalisation, natural disasters or human disasters such as war or global financial collapse.
Bearing all this in mind, public relations education is necessarily embedded in the contemporary issues of the day in a very wide range of environments (political, economic, technological, socio-cultural, regulatory/legal) and contexts (sports, health, religion, tourism, development, regeneration).
Our courses are regularly restructured to improve their effectiveness and efficiency in meeting both academic and professional requirements. Modules relate to the Public Relations Education and Training Matrix developed with, and endorsed by, the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and the Public Relations Consultants Association.

Work Placement

Many students choose our program because of our outstanding work placement program. After successfully completing two academic semesters, you will have the opportunity to complete an eight-week, normally unpaid, work placement. This experience will allow you to gain valuable job skills and industry knowledge while building your network. Humber will work with you to find a placement. Historically, students find work placements in PR agencies, corporations, entertainment organizations, not-for-profits including arts organizations, hospitals, associations and government. While many placements are located within the GTA, students also may find placements outside the city, province or country. As part of your pre-work placement preparation, we will provide you with the required criteria.

Your Career

As a PR practitioner, your work will be varied and fast-paced. The CIPR Public Affairs Diploma is designed for public relations or public affairs practitioners who want to develop relevant theoretical knowledge and to strengthen their practical skills in order to become more effective and better placed to take on more senior roles. The course focuses on the role communication expertise plays in public policy processes as they are approached in the context of strategic communications and reputation management that underpin the public affairs function. The qualification is firmly rooted in practice - with regular contributions from senior practitioners - as well as clear in its interdisciplinary theoretical basis. Public Affairs Diploma students receive 20 hours of face-to-face tuition between January and May, individual supervision for the research project (course assessment), as well as extensive online resources developed to support individual study.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Twenty hours of on campus teaching comprises a variety of approaches including lectures, workshops, group work and input from senior practitioners and QMU academics. Work is set and contact maintained between teaching blocks through online discussions. Students also receive supervision support with their assignment. CIPR Public Affairs Diploma students learn alongside and MSc Strategic Communications and Public Relations students ensuring that you benefit from sharing experiences and developing a network of colleagues. This programme enhances the skills you need as a PR and communications student seeking to enter the industry. It is focused on developing skills related to communications as a strategic management discipline, it enhances employability and the continuing development of the profession. Journalism/PR suites
We have four journalism suites, each with 18 Apple Mac workstations with design applications and video editing. There’s an additional open access project completion suite with 20 more workstations and colour laser printing.

Broadcast Journalism Newsroom
The Broadcast Journalism Newsroom has 20 workstations plus a Sky feed with two 40” plasma screens. Each workstation has industry-standard software including NewsCutter, Burli and ENPS.

Technical support
The Journalism Newsroom has another 20 Mac workstations and offers drop-in sessions run by a rota of working journalists who can advise on projects, assignments and your personal portfolio. These sessions are available every day of the week during term time. In addition, technicians are available to help you use all the software and equipment.

Radio studios
We have six radio studios including a transmission suite for 107 Spark FM, our student-run community radio station and a city centre hub.

TV studios
We have two broadcast-quality TV studios complete with green room and changing facilities. Equipment includes four Steadicam rigs plus dolly, track and mini crane. We have over 40 full HD tapeless field camera systems.

Other media facilities
We have a live Sky feed and off-air recording facility, including DVD and Blu-ray recording, plus extensive footage archive/library. There is also a 203-seat cinema with full HD projection, 7.1 surround sound facility and the capability to play 3D feature films.

This variant of our established MSc Strategic Public Relations & Communication Management course is delivered jointly with our partner Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain. This course provides students with a solid international perspective on strategic communication and provides an opportunity to study in both Stirling, UK, and Barcelona, Spain.
The MSc Strategic Communication & Public Relations is an interdisciplinary, advanced level course taught by established academics and practitioners. Students spend Semester 1 at the University of Stirling and then go to Pompeu Fabra University for Semester 2. Students then can decide to have their dissertation supervision at the University of Stirling or Pompeu Fabra University.

PR Planning & Management
This module develops the ability to explain, critique and apply a range of theories and practices to strategic public relations planning and management, considering publics, messages, media, research and evaluation.

In addition to his academic role within our University he also acts as an advisor to a number of leading blue-chip companies on management and organisational development. Professor Prince has also served as a member of the UK's Association of Business Schools' Executive, and as the Chair of the Management, Organisation and Community Development Steering Committee. He is a former Deputy Editor of the Journal of Strategic Change, and has served as a member of the Advisory Board of the Annual Conference of Management and Executive Development in the USA.

Course details

The public relations and media industries are constantly changing. To stay ahead of the game you must develop up-to-date multimedia communications skills and knowledge. This course explores the changing nature of the communications landscape in the 21st century and develops your professional skills and experience.

During this course you work as public relations professionals with industry partners on real-life briefs and in work-based placements. You also work with research active staff to develop reflective awareness of contemporary issues in the communications field and develop their academic skills and writing.

This course is primarily taught in Teesside's purpose built digital working-environments, developing your skills in building meaningful content, which attracts an audience. This course attracts graduates from all over the world and students are offered the opportunity to build a portfolio of work, which translates globally.

What you study

We produce graduates who are confident multimedia public relations professionals, with a range of higher-level professional skills and a reflective awareness of contemporary issues in the communications field. The course focuses on new and emerging areas within the discipline, from both a practical, professional perspective and a critical, analytical point of view. Teaching

Traditional lectures and seminars are employed, particularly around those subjects requiring a detailed, factual knowledge base. We see it as an essential component of the programme that you engage in reflective practice which informs your future personal development.

Our assessment methods range from practical production tasks to traditional essay assignments. You produce a professional-level multimedia public relations campaign addressing a range of styles, genres, platforms and audiences. You produce an essay on a topic related to public relations theory.

You write an academic essay, which helps provide a broader context for the practical work undertaken for your Final Project.

For your Final Project, you research, analyse and implement a promotional multimedia campaign for a real-life business client or undertake a self-conceived piece of independent research and produce an extended essay under the guidance of a nominated supervisor.

Employability

A qualification and experience in public relations opens up a vast range of opportunities in all areas of the media and communications industries.

Graduates have gone on to forge successful careers in public relations, social media optimisation and events management for a range of local and national companies.

A key feature of modern marketing is the decline of mass communication in favour of multiple person-to-person networks and mobile messenger apps such as WhatsApp. Sitting alongside traditional PR tools, social networks and blog sites are now part of the PR practitioner’s toolkit. This accredited course will expose you to the challenges at the forefront of modern PR and enhance your ability to manage brand and corporate identity effectively.

You will explore the radical shift in PR, as traditional channels such as advertising and sales promotion have changed. The course will further develop your understanding of word-of-mouth marketing, including social networks and the growing popularity of photo and video sharing sites.

From Facebook and Twitter to YouTube, Pinterest and Instagram, you will challenge traditional methods and the contemporary thinking associated with marketing and stakeholder communications. The course will also cover the importance of brand reputation and the growing demand for essential skills in crisis management, and enhance your knowledge and understanding of the role PR plays in modern politics.

- PR Concepts and Practice
This module aims to provide an introductory critique of key concepts and tools of modern PR practice and implementation. It examines the theoretical underpinnings of the subject by exploring how PR is utilised to influence issues within society, industry and the environment.

- Brands & Reputation Management
This module aims to provide a critique of the key theoretical underpinning surrounding the consumption, construction and reputation management of brands – a key responsibility for modern PR practitioners.

- Strategic Marketing
This module critically examines the key elements of strategic marketing and its interface with business strategy.

- Content Marketing & Public Relations
This module provides a solid foundation for writing and factual story-telling as well as verbal communication within a marketing and PR context.

- Managing Professional Development
The aim of this module is to support personal and professional development for a business related professional career.

- Third Sector & Political Public Relations
This module critically evaluates the PR practice within the public/political sector. It accordingly examines how PR is utilised by third sector organisations, such as pressure groups, charities, trade unions and social enterprises, as well as political parties.

- Campaign Planning for Marketing & PR
The aim of this module is to enable you to understand the key constructs associated with campaign planning for marketing and PR, notably the use of digital technology.

- Research Methods
The aim of this module is to develop your understanding and skills of research in a management and/or professional development context, focusing on a critical review of research methodologies and methods.

- Management Project
This module introduces you to the intellectual and scholarly requirements of producing an extended piece of written postgraduate research.

Learning and teaching methods

Full-time students study each subject intensively over a period of several weeks. Part-time delivery is designed around the needs of practicing marketing managers and PR professionals. You will learn through lectures, seminars, group work, case studies, and analyses of communications materials and networks, as well as specialist guest lecturers from leading professionals. The course also includes potential for a site visit to a media communications organisation.

Through our series of guest lecturers delivered by leading industry experts, you can also gain up to the moment insights into the challenges and practices pertinent to image management and PR planning.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

The skills you will gain on the MSc Public Relations course will allow you to help your employer or company gain a competitive edge by managing meaningful relationships through PR. You will also gain the latest intelligence about social networking, new communication techniques and how to manage new and emerging digital channels.

Students will typically be offered the opportunity to meet representatives from PR companies who offer internships by way of guest talks. In addition, the University of South Wales Careers and Employability Service helps students with all aspects of careers and employability. Services range from individual advice and guidance on CVs & applications, interviews, work experience, internships, volunteering, practical support with job hunting and working/studying overseas.

As a student of this course you will have access to help and advice from a dedicated student area on the CIPR website on starting your career within the public relations industry.

Assessment methods

Assessment is assignment-based, so you can explore each subject to develop your critical and analytical skills. The final requirement is a dissertation or business research project, where you will examine an aspect of PR in depth.
