Full-time Public Health and Health Promotion students will study two days a week (Wednesdays and Fridays) from October to April and dissertations submitted in September of the same year. Part-time Public Health and Health Promotion students will study one day a week (Wednesdays in the first year, Fridays in the second year) over two years, and dissertations are submitted in September of the third year. All modules are core and therefore required to be successfully passed, there are no optional modules available in the Public Health and Health Promotion programme.

The main educational aims of the programme include:

To provide candidates with postgraduate level knowledge and skills in the area of national (UK and Irish), European and International (WTO, World Bank and UNCITRAL) Public Procurement Law and Strategy.
To build up specialist legal skills and knowledge to equip candidates to operate in the interface between legal principles that apply in the Public Procurement environment and the strategic objectives of interests to organisations in the public and private sectors.

Part 1

LLM in Public Procurement Law and Strategy (1 Year programme)

Part 1 will involve the study of 120 credits.

September intake: Part 1 will be undertaken in the period of September to June.

Teaching will mostly be seminar based which will promote group and individual interaction, which also ensures that every individual candidate is encouraged to contribute to discussions.


Executive LLM in Public Procurement Law and Strategy (2 Year programme)

Taught modules are undertaken over two academic sessions and will involve the study of 120 credits.

Teaching on the Executive stream will be in the form of structured lectures facilitated by the Lecturer and driven by class discussions and case study analysis.

Delivery will be on a block release basis with classes delivered over weekends – on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday – during two academic sessions. Accommodation for participants on the Executive stream is included in the programme fee. Participants will be accommodated at the Management Centre at Bangor University.
Collaborative learning will be an important part of the learning process for the stream.
The module will be taught using a combination of expert Procurement Law academic staff and legal practitioners from leading law firms and in-house legal departments.
Case studies will be used to help the candidates to contextualise active procurement legal problems against a background of realistic scenarios where they get the opportunity to apply the relevant rules of law that they will have been lectured on.
Candidates will be expected to have prepared essential reading on case law, legislation, and other procurement rules prior to the seminar, and will discuss the legal issues raised by the reading in an interactive fashion in order that the class can engage in problem solving facilitated by the lecturer.
Part 2

The Applied Procurement Research Projects (APRP) which is valued at 60 credits and is undertaken on successful completion of Part 1.

Candidates on the one year full-time programme undertake their project during the period of June to September (September intake).

Candidates on the two year programme will undertake their project in the final year of their programme).

The research project comprises a two week work placement in a procurement function and the submission by candidates of either:

One essay with a maximum length of between 18,000 and 20,000 words OR
Two essays not exceeding 10,000-words per essay OR
Four essays not exceeding 5,000-words per essay.
The APRP will be used to familiarise candidates with a broad range of current themes in Public Procurement Law and Strategy. Indicative areas where candidates may undertake applied research projects include national and European Procurement Law, Litigation Strategies, relationship between European Internal Market Law and Public Procurement Law, International Procurement Regimes, Sustainable Procurement, Public Procurement and Innovation, Procurement Relations, Procurement Ethics, Risk Management in Public Procurement, and Contract Design and Management. Other topics proposed by candidates may be acceptable subject to ratification by the Course Leader.

With a strong emphasis on application of knowledge to practice, industry skills such as public relations writing, media relations, digital communications and client management are underpinned by academic rigour focusing on public relations strategy, campaign planning and public relations specialisms. You will have the opportunity to work with real clients, including individually creating a press pack for use by an external client and working as part of an account team on a live PR project. Public Relations Theory, Strategy and Planning
This unit aims to provide you with an understanding of the basic PR and communications concepts and theories underlying modern public relations practice, as well as some of the broader key theories of strategy and planning which underpin PR as an academic subject and practical career path.

Strategy and Planning for Digital and Social Media Communications
This unit integrates digital and social media into organisational communication campaigns. It reviews emerging techniques and assesses their impact within integrated media communication.

Public Relations Skills and Specialisms
This unit covers a number of the most important skills needed by the public relations practitioner, including writing and media relations. Effective writing skills are a prerequisite for a career in public relations, and the unit will explore how to create effective messages and write well and clearly for a variety of target audiences.

Research Methods and Investigating Business Practice
This unit will develop your critical thinking, reflective writing and other study skills, including analysis and referencing, in order to successfully study at Masters level. Investigating Business Practice will enable you to work with a client on a live brief with other students. The brief normally requires you to work as a PR Account Team to produce a public relations campaign in response to key issues an organisation may face.

Research Project or Dissertation
A Master’s research project or dissertation is intended to test your ability to produce a substantial, original, and independent piece of scholarly work. It should also demonstrate your awareness and understanding of the relevant theories and schools of thought associated with the chosen topic, and demonstrate your ability to identify relevant sources of information and to analyse their value in relation to the topic being investigated.

Students take courses in Public Policy and Strategy, Public Policy and Management, Managing Organisational Change. Perspectives and Issues, and Research Methods. Structure

The MSc Public Policy and Management has three components:

1. Four core courses to the value of 2.0 units
2. Elective course(s) to the value of 1.0 unit
3. Dissertation of 10,000 words on an approved topic (1 unit)

The 10,000-word dissertation is worth 25% of your final mark. During term 2 you will submit your dissertation proposal and select an academic supervisor. Over the ensuing months you should meet with your supervisor at least three times before the end of term 3 for guidance. The bulk of your dissertation will be written over the summer to meet the mid-September deadline.

Not all elective courses are offered every year; please check your preferences with the Programme Convenor. Also note that if half units are selected, one term 1 course and one term 2 course needs to be chosen.

- Part-time Study

Part-time students are required to complete three of the core courses during their first year, then one core and two elective courses plus the dissertation during the second year.

Those enrolled on the three-year programme are required to complete three of the core courses during their first year, one core and two elective courses in the second year, and the dissertation in the third year.

Employment

Building on the distance learning version of the programme, the Department of Financial and Management Studies (DeFiMS) maintains close links with employers in both the United Kingdom and abroad. We expect that many of our graduates will be employed as civil servants in central government administrations, governmental agencies, local governments, NGOs, super-national organisations, and consulting firms.

Faculty of Law and Social Sciences (L&SS)

Welcome to the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences at SOAS. The faculty is the largest in the School in terms of student and staff numbers and consists of the departments of Development Studies, Economics, Financial and Management Studies, Politics and International Studies and the School of Law, as well as the Asia-Pacific Centre for Social Sciences, the Centre for Gender Studies, the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy, the Centre of Taiwan Studies and a number of department-specific centres. All five departments offer undergraduate programmes, and all but Finance and International Management offer joint undergraduate degrees which can be combined with other disciplines from across the School. The course is based on the contribution of a range of disciplines, including economics, politics, accounting, management and information systems, to the study of public policy and public sector reform and management in a changing environment within an international context.

Programme details

This course involves engagement with a number of ideas drawn from law, economics and the social and physical sciences which are of relevance to the theory and practice of environmental and public intervention.

Modules address the existing and emerging challenges and explore contemporary management, technological and regulatory systems designed to reduce environmental risks.

A feature of the course is applied learning and an emphasis on contextualising study.

This course comprises four taught modules complemented by a research dissertation. Within the full-time course, three modules are compulsory with two studied in semester 1 and the remaining one in semester 2. The remaining module is optional and you can choose one module in semester 2 from the available options.

For part-time students the taught components span two academic years each consisting of two semesters between September and May. Year 1 involves the study of two core modules. Year 2 involves the study of one core and one optional module.

Format

This course has both full-time and part-time routes, which, for the MSc, comprises three 14-week semesters or five 14-week semesters, which you can take within one or three years respectively:

It is aimed at students who wish to pursue a rigorous, scientifically based course of study in the theories underpinning how public finances are managed; how public managers make sound financial decisions; what kind of techniques and tools are used in the financial management of public sector organisations; and how the financial management of public sector organisations is reported to the public.

Graduates will have a solid understanding of public financial management that should place them in a good position to pursue a career, or advance their career, in the civil service, local government, NGOs, and super-national organisations.

Structure

The MSc Public Financial Management has three components:

1. Five core courses to the value of 2.5 units
2. An elective course to the value of 0.5 unit
3. Dissertation of 10,000 words on an approved topic (1 unit)

The 10,000-word dissertation is worth 25% of your final mark. During term 2 you will submit your dissertation proposal and select an academic supervisor. Over the ensuing months you should meet with your supervisor at least three times before the end of term 3 for guidance. The bulk of your dissertation will be written over the summer to meet the mid-September deadline.

Not all elective courses are offered every year; please check your preferences with the Programme Convenor.

- Part-time Study

Part-time students are required to complete three of the core courses during their first year, then two core and one elective courses plus the dissertation during the second year.

Building on the distance learning version of the programme, the Department of Financial and Management Studies (DeFiMS) maintains close links with employers in both the United Kingdom and abroad. Welcome to the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences at SOAS. This is your opportunity to become a specialist community public health nurse on the third part of the nursing register. The course will enable you to undertake leadership roles and develop the expertise to influence, drive and implement public health policies.

The Postgraduate Diploma prepares you to function as a specialist practitioner. You would normally be required to undertake the first six core modules listed below in order to achieve this. Our MSc will help you continue with your academic studies as you undertake an extended project, relevant to clinical practice. You will normally be expected to complete the additional 60 credit Research in Practice module in order to achieve this, which will take a further one year.

By critically analysing leadership and management in clinical practice, you will examine the complexity of delivering health and social care services, especially in relation to professional health visitor nursing.
