Full-time Public Health and Health Promotion students will study two days a week (Wednesdays and Fridays) from October to April and dissertations submitted in September of the same year. Part-time Public Health and Health Promotion students will study one day a week (Wednesdays in the first year, Fridays in the second year) over two years, and dissertations are submitted in September of the third year. Part 1

LLM in Public Procurement Law and Strategy (1 Year programme)

Part 1 will involve the study of 120 credits.

September intake: Part 1 will be undertaken in the period of September to June.

Teaching will mostly be seminar based which will promote group and individual interaction, which also ensures that every individual candidate is encouraged to contribute to discussions.


Executive LLM in Public Procurement Law and Strategy (2 Year programme)

Taught modules are undertaken over two academic sessions and will involve the study of 120 credits.

Teaching on the Executive stream will be in the form of structured lectures facilitated by the Lecturer and driven by class discussions and case study analysis.

Delivery will be on a block release basis with classes delivered over weekends – on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday – during two academic sessions. Accommodation for participants on the Executive stream is included in the programme fee. Participants will be accommodated at the Management Centre at Bangor University.
Collaborative learning will be an important part of the learning process for the stream.
The module will be taught using a combination of expert Procurement Law academic staff and legal practitioners from leading law firms and in-house legal departments.
Case studies will be used to help the candidates to contextualise active procurement legal problems against a background of realistic scenarios where they get the opportunity to apply the relevant rules of law that they will have been lectured on.
Candidates will be expected to have prepared essential reading on case law, legislation, and other procurement rules prior to the seminar, and will discuss the legal issues raised by the reading in an interactive fashion in order that the class can engage in problem solving facilitated by the lecturer.
Part 2

The Applied Procurement Research Projects (APRP) which is valued at 60 credits and is undertaken on successful completion of Part 1.

Candidates on the one year full-time programme undertake their project during the period of June to September (September intake).

Candidates on the two year programme will undertake their project in the final year of their programme).

The research project comprises a two week work placement in a procurement function and the submission by candidates of either:

One essay with a maximum length of between 18,000 and 20,000 words OR
Two essays not exceeding 10,000-words per essay OR
Four essays not exceeding 5,000-words per essay.
The APRP will be used to familiarise candidates with a broad range of current themes in Public Procurement Law and Strategy. Indicative areas where candidates may undertake applied research projects include national and European Procurement Law, Litigation Strategies, relationship between European Internal Market Law and Public Procurement Law, International Procurement Regimes, Sustainable Procurement, Public Procurement and Innovation, Procurement Relations, Procurement Ethics, Risk Management in Public Procurement, and Contract Design and Management. This course examines the role of public relations in shaping media output both within media organisations themselves and in relation to the external impact of PR on the media.

The field of public relations has grown dramatically in the past 20 years and this has had profound implications for the media and other institutions that rely on the media to disseminate knowledge.

This course will investigate the rise of public relations and its links with global media institutions from historical perspectives and in relation to the contemporary media landscape. It will offer a critical examination of the role of PR in the mediation of power as well as the role of public relations in a range of media arenas.

You will be encouraged to reflect critically and theoretically on the function of PR in relation to: the role of the media in political communication, media policy, celebrity culture, film marketing, alternative media, media campaigning, and new media technologies.

You will be offered the opportunity to plan PR campaigns and reflect on their role in the knowledge economy.

This combination will provide you with the opportunity to examine the context in which PR practice takes place and to develop the knowledge and skills needed to work ethically in PR at an international level.

Special Features

The academic study of public relations and the media is very new and this MA puts us at the forefront of this development. Most of the MAs in Britain either focus on corporate public relations and are either predominantly practical or are theoretical courses that sit within more traditional mass communications curriculum and focus on the important area of political communications and the news media. Our
MA is innovative because it combines theory and practice.

Also innovative is our combined examination of the impact of public relations on the media and the use of public relations practices within media organisations including film, TV and other news organisations, with particular reference to their promotional cultures. This provides students with a broad and advanced understanding of the relationship between public relations and the media.

We have experts teaching on the course with both theoretical and practical experience.

This programme has grown out of the research interests and expertise of the team, giving it a distinctive character.

The focus on PR within the media will range from that of large corporations to smaller-scale, alternative forms including ‘DIY’ practices employed directly by lower-budget producers via social media and other online channels, key areas of contemporary development in PR and marketing more generally.

The MSc in Public Policy and Management seeks to provide an interdisciplinary training and education that will enable policy-makers, economists, planners, managers and researchers to be fully conversant with current issues of public policy and management, in an international development setting. In doing so the programme will provide participants with the conceptual and analytical tools needed to understand and critically review issues relevant to public policy and public sector reform. While the programme was conceived primarily for those already working in the public sector environment, it has evolved into a highly successful multidisciplinary programme that is appropriate to modern professionals, from a wide variety of backgrounds, who have an interest in issues of public policy.

Aims

By the end of the programme students will:
-Have an understanding of the different conceptual and theoretical perspectives applied to public policy and management, and public sector reform
-Have an understanding of the principles and practices underlying the implementation of public policy processes, and have acquired knowledge of `real world' examples of public policy/sector reform from leading experts
-Have an understanding of the role and importance of institutions for public policy and management
-Have developed skills in initial analysis of development economics, public policy, management and development studies, and in communicating their analysis in the form of clearly written and readable documents

Teaching and learning

Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 24 months. There are NO evening or weekend course units available on the part-time programme, therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director first and seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.

Coursework and assessment

The taught elements of the programme, carrying 120 credits overall is continuously assessed by a variety of methods (project based reports, essays), involving largely individual submissions, but also elements of group work.

Participants must also complete a 12,000-15,000 word dissertation on a topic of their choice approved by the Programme Directors. Students are encouraged to base their dissertations on topics of direct professional concern to themselves.

Career opportunities

The course is intended primarily for those with experience of the public sector and those involved in public policy formulation and implementation. The nature of the course also ensures that graduates are well equipped to pursue careers in the public sector or in public policy and development as researchers, advisers or consultants.

Structure

The MSc Public Policy and Management has three components:

1. Four core courses to the value of 2.0 units
2. Elective course(s) to the value of 1.0 unit
3. Dissertation of 10,000 words on an approved topic (1 unit)

The 10,000-word dissertation is worth 25% of your final mark. During term 2 you will submit your dissertation proposal and select an academic supervisor. Over the ensuing months you should meet with your supervisor at least three times before the end of term 3 for guidance. The bulk of your dissertation will be written over the summer to meet the mid-September deadline.

Not all elective courses are offered every year; please check your preferences with the Programme Convenor. Also note that if half units are selected, one term 1 course and one term 2 course needs to be chosen.

- Part-time Study

Part-time students are required to complete three of the core courses during their first year, then one core and two elective courses plus the dissertation during the second year.

Those enrolled on the three-year programme are required to complete three of the core courses during their first year, one core and two elective courses in the second year, and the dissertation in the third year.

Building on the distance learning version of the programme, the Department of Financial and Management Studies (DeFiMS) maintains close links with employers in both the United Kingdom and abroad. This course involves engagement with a number of ideas drawn from law, economics and the social and physical sciences which are of relevance to the theory and practice of environmental and public intervention.

A feature of the course is applied learning and an emphasis on contextualising study.

This course comprises four taught modules complemented by a research dissertation. Structure

The MSc Public Financial Management has three components:

1. Five core courses to the value of 2.5 units
2. An elective course to the value of 0.5 unit
3. Dissertation of 10,000 words on an approved topic (1 unit)

The 10,000-word dissertation is worth 25% of your final mark. During term 2 you will submit your dissertation proposal and select an academic supervisor. Over the ensuing months you should meet with your supervisor at least three times before the end of term 3 for guidance. The bulk of your dissertation will be written over the summer to meet the mid-September deadline.

- Part-time Study

Communications Audit
Develop your critical awareness of communications audits and their function in a consultancy setting. Working in a team alongside your peers, you will audit an aspect of internal or external communications for a live client. You will understand how to use auditing to improve an organisation's business performance, especially in relation to its communications activity.

Global Business Environment
You will analyse the political, social, legal and technological relationships between businesses in the global external environment. International Marketing - Emerging Markets

This is your opportunity to become a specialist community public health nurse on the third part of the nursing register. The course will enable you to undertake leadership roles and develop the expertise to influence, drive and implement public health policies.

The Postgraduate Diploma prepares you to function as a specialist practitioner. You would normally be required to undertake the first six core modules listed below in order to achieve this. Our MSc will help you continue with your academic studies as you undertake an extended project, relevant to clinical practice. You will normally be expected to complete the additional 60 credit Research in Practice module in order to achieve this, which will take a further one year.

By critically analysing leadership and management in clinical practice, you will examine the complexity of delivering health and social care services, especially in relation to professional health visitor nursing.

There is the opportunity to explore concepts of health behaviours and promotion in the public health arena, together with how to meet the wellbeing needs of individuals, groups and communities.
