The Master of Public Health award (MPH) is an internationally recognised qualification in Public Health. It is aimed at a wide range of people from both the UK and abroad, from NHS and non-NHS backgrounds including those in primary or secondary care, health authorities and primary care trusts, nursing and professions related to medicine, health promotion, health care research, health management and anyone wishing to develop a career in public health.

Distance Learning

Due to a global, national and local focus on public health developments, the Master of Public Health award has increased in popularity over the last few years. The distance learning route allows overseas students to undertake a University of Wolverhampton degree from their own country. The course is also suitable for those unable to travel into University for on-campus courses whether this is due to child-care difficulties, travel issues or general lack of time to enter traditional modules of study.

WLVGlobal features uploading and downloading of module materials such as guides, regulations, reading and research sources/links as well as virtual classrooms whereby students and module leaders can hold discussions to learn collaboratively.

Why Wolverhampton?

The MPH has been delivered for over a decade at the University and recruits around 60 students per year over two intakes. The success rate is high, mainly attributable to the personal tutor support that is provided to students throughout the taught elements of the award and during research supervision. Students are also supported when they have completed the course through regular email updates, opportunities and reference support for job applications.

The Institute of Public Health, Social Work and Care have staff with extensive experience in health care at clinical, managerial and research levels. Research and development are viewed as an integral part of the School’s activities, underpinning learning and teaching within all subject areas. The Centre for Health and Social Care Improvement (CHSCI) is a multi-disciplinary partnership within the School of Health & Wellbeing at the University of Wolverhampton. Career choices encompass many disciplines including roles in public health, health promotion, health statistics, epidemiology, clinical governance, health care research, health technology assessment and public health nursing, where you will find that a Masters-level qualification is increasingly required.

Many of our home students have gone on to work within public health departments in the UK and other related areas of health. International students have developed their careers in public health within their own countries of origin. Students have also gone on to work with the WHO, the UN and other international organizations.

During the course you will analyse practice and policy in health care, developing practical and critical skills – you will also gain a sound understanding of associated theories and will have the opportunity to develop your own special interests and embark on academic research. The programme also covers much of the syllabus required for the Part 1 examinations of the Faculty of Public Health.

Advanced Practice in Health Care Course Structure

The Advanced Practice in Health Care course is taught at the St. David’s Park site in Carmarthen. There are two student intakes per year, one in October and another in March. Students also have access to the extensive facilities at the Singleton Park campus in Swansea.

The course consists of two parts.

For students beginning the course in October, Part One modules are taught for one day a week between October and May for the first two years.

For students beginning the course in March, Part One modules are taught for one day a week between March and January for the first two years, however teaching days are in line with normal University holidays.

Part Two consists of the dissertation which has to be submitted by 30th September in the third year.

The Advanced Practice in Health Care programme comprises several compulsory modules with some optional modules available.

Students are assessed using a variety of methods including essays, presentations and objective structured clinical examinations. The assessment for each module must be successfully completed.

Staff Expertise

The Academic Lead for the Advanced Practice in Health Care team works on a national basis with the Welsh Government on advanced practice policy. Several members of the teaching team have published books and papers on the subject of Advanced Practice.

Several members of the teaching team of the Advanced Practice in Health Care course work on committees with Hywel Dda Health Board and Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board. Clinical mentors support students in practice.

The emphasis is on the use, development and critical evaluation of conceptual models; evidence and methods of analysis; and on practical, effective interventions.

Graduates from this stream work in health care, health policy and public health organisations at local, national and international level in service and academic public health roles.

An additional requirement for the MSc Public Health (all streams) is some evidence of ability in mathematics, post-16 year education. Preference will also be given to applicants with relevant work experience.

Any student who does not meet the minimum entry requirement above but who has relevant professional experience may still be eligible for admission. Qualifications and experience will be assessed from the application.

By the end of this stream students should be able to demonstrate ability to apply knowledge of the core disciplines of public health, consisting of statistics; epidemiology; health economics; and social research, to real health problems. In addition, they should be able to:

The Public Health MSc, PG Dip, PG Cert provides a comprehensive and integrated education in public health through a multidisciplinary study approach which is both academic and vocational. It draws upon the wealth of research, education and clinical expertise in the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine and is delivered by the Department of Primary Care & Public Health Sciences which has forged strong international links, particularly with US and European research and teaching partners.

The course aims to enable you to develop a critical understanding of public health providing the foundations for pursuing a career in public health, or for enhancing existing practice and facilitating career advancement, particularly through contributing to the emerging evidence base for public health interventions.

Students study a suite of modules which provide a comprehensive understanding of public health. Teaching

What can I do next?

The course enables those who are not currently working in mainstream public health to enter the field, for example those who work in a health-related clinical setting will be better placed to switch to public health work.

The MSc Health Policy will develop your understanding of, and critical engagement with, key challenges in health policy. Both state and non-state actors grapple with how best to promote the health of communities and populations, including the most effective strategies for preventing disease, ensuring efficient and high quality health care, and reducing health inequalities.

These challenges extend beyond the traditional domain of the health sector, requiring engagement with economic and social policy and a range of non-state actors including third sector organisations, commercial interests and international agencies.

The MSc in Health Policy is designed for individuals interested in a wide range of health-related roles including government and international agencies, health advocacy, health administration and health care delivery, consultancies, advisory roles, the commercial sector, and health-related research. Within the programme there is scope for you to specialise in either health systems or health inequalities, or to follow a broad policy stream.

The Health Systems stream is ideal for those seeking to work in health care policy, planning or management, in either the public or private sectors. It will expose you to different models of health care financing, purchasing and delivery, equipping them to engage with key contemporary challenges and debates including how to achieve sustainable health care financing, the role of the state in health care, the appropriate mix of public and private provision, and how best to achieve the goals of equity, efficiency and quality in health care delivery.

The Health Inequalities stream is ideal for those seeking to engage with health disparities both between and within countries, particularly those relating to inequities in social structures and power. In this stream you will explore evidence and policy responses to health inequalities across a range of axes, including class/socioeconomic position, ethnicity/race and gender, and will consider how health and its determinants are shaped by a range of influences including social and economic policy, commercial power and political conflict. This stream is particularly suited to those interested in working in policy, advocacy and research settings with a focus on health equity.

You may also elect to follow a broad policy stream within the MSc Health Policy, rather than specialising in health systems or health inequalities. This stream equips you with an understanding of how health policy fits within broader approaches to social and economic policy, and is particularly suitable for individuals wanting to work in public policy, advocacy or research.

Our students come from countries at all levels of economic development and from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, with many using the MSc as an investment to develop their careers or move into a more policy-focused role. While the programme has a strong policy focus, it also includes an academic orientation so is good preparation for further research at PhD level.

The MSc programme is situated within the Global Public Health Unit, which is located in University’s School of Social and Political Science rather than a medical school. This reflects our programme’s reach across traditional boundaries, linking policy analysis, public health, social policy, economics, sociology, medicine and epidemiology. The MSc programme offers innovative research-led teaching that draws on academic expertise from all these disciplines, while also benefitting from close links with the Centre for Population Health Sciences in the University's medical college.

This programme is designed to equip you with the knowledge and critical skills you need to play a senior role in health policy, advocacy and research.

Specific aims are to:

  • Have a critical understanding of core concepts and frameworks relevant to health policy and population health.
  • Be aware of key contemporary challenges to health and the role of the state and other actors in seeking to address these.
  • Have a critical awareness of the links between health policy and broader social and economic policies, including the extent to which health objectives may complement or be in tension with other social goals
  • Understand different models of health care financing, purchasing and delivery, and be able to draw on these in critically appraising the roles of different actors in the development and implementation of health policy and in a diverse range of health systems reforms (Health Systems stream)
  • Understand the social determinants of health and health inequalities, and apply this understanding in critically evaluating different approaches to improving health and reducing health inequalities (Health Inequalities stream)

This programme is intended to equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue employment positions in policy, advocacy and research roles relevant to health policy. Most students use the MSc as an investment to develop their careers or move into a more policy-focused area, including jobs with health agencies or consultancies, government departments, international organisations and third sector organisations. Intercultural Learning

Aims to introduce and enhance core learning skills within an intercultural environment. Learning to learn, study, read, write and reflect within a new environment can be challenging and particularly in a new country. Learning how to learn together, share ideas, develop key learning skills and support others are key facets of this module. The module is underpinned by thinking around the internationalisation of higher education.

International Health

Explores the idea of international health and human development. It examines both the determinants of health, and aspects of health system development. It evaluates a number of international strategies aimed at health for all and explores the role of primary health care in local level health improvement.

Global Health

Aims to examine the key processes of globalization and how they impact on the health of populations and their environments. Key public health risks are identified and their strategic response at the global level evaluated. Issues explored include: global disease, risk and surveillance; alcohol and tobacco control; globesity and non-communicable disease; HIV/AIDS; pollution and climate change.

Epidemiology

Examines the principles and tools of epidemiology and disease surveillance. These principles are then applied to an understanding of communicable and non-communicable diseases and assessment of health inequalities through tools such as health needs assessment and their role in protecting and improving population health.

Public Health: Policy and Practice

Introduces students to the concepts and underpinning theories associated with the public health approach and practices associated with the promotion and protection of population health. The module reviews historical as well as contemporary public health approaches, policies and strategies. There is a particular focus on examining health inequalities and measures to reduce them. The aim is to identify local, national and international strategic responses to both improving health and reducing health inequalities.

Research Methods

Encourages students to develop their skills as a potential producer of research, as well as their ability to systematically evaluate research outcomes from a variety of sources. In addition, students engage in a variety of data analysis techniques. The module covers quantitative, qualitative, mixed, creative and participatory methodologies.​

Violence

Violence is now regarded as a critical public health concern. The impact of violence on the health of individuals, families and the wider society adds to an increasing burden of ill-health and cost to health and other welfare services. This module critically examines a range of key issues related to violence and health from international, national and local perspectives. It demonstrates the need for an interdisciplinary public health approach when addressing the causes of violence, building prevention control strategies, and promoting safety. Health Improvement

Encourages students to develop knowledge and competence in the area of health improvement. The module covers a number of core health improvement approaches: health promotion, prevention, health behaviour change and community participation. It considers the relevancy and value of these approaches to different population groups from a global perspective.

Health Protection

Examines the components and structure of health protection activity. The risks to public health from both communicable and non-infectious environmental hazards are explored in detail. The infrastructure of health emergency planning is critically analysed.

Systematic Review

This module provides a complete guide and hands on approach to developing a research question and learning the methods and key processes involved in completing a systematic review. Systematic review is a cross cutting methodology which can be used in a variety of disciplines and through interdisciplinary collaboration. The module can be taken by anybody from any discipline who wants to increase their skill set in the methodology. The focus will be on application of the systematic review methods to a chosen field of investigation.​

The MSc Global Public Health and Policy builds on models of social determinants of health and international health concepts of policy-making at the extra-territorial level. Students can specialise in areas as diverse as trade in health, global burden of disease, evidence-based policy making, pharmaceuticals, clinical trials, and ethics. Over six core modules, two electives and a dissertation, you explore and critique key concepts and models in public health theory, policy and practice.

The course is interesting to

  • (public) health practitioners currently working in the UK or overseas: each year, the cohort has been made up of around 60% overseas students from all over the world alongside students from a range of public health organisations in the local area. If you currently work in a public health role you can gain academic credit for work based learning in the public health practice elective
  • practitioners not in a public health role, but working in organisations with a (potential) public health remit, for example local authorities, housing associations, schools, social services, criminal justice system, voluntary and community organisations
  • practitioners working with population groups who experience inequality, for example people with disabilities, older people, asylum seekers and refugees, people who are unemployed, people with mental health conditions, people with chronic illness, and who wish to explore these communities in a public health context.
  • students who have just completed their undergraduate studies in a related discipline. In the past we have had students from social work, education, sports science, food and nutrition, nursing and a range of professions allied to medicine.

You explore the links between policy, evidence and practice and you address key questions including

You learn how successful management of public health requires development of critical approaches to theory, practice, and outcome measurement. We give you the knowledge and skills to be more effective in your role.

You develop knowledge in the 10 key public health competencies and standards needed to join the UK Voluntary Register for Public Health specialists. This registration allows you to work at a senior level in public health.

Students are assessed using a variety of methods: reports, presentations, book reviews and essays and for all but three assessment tasks students are able to choose a public health topic and/or population group on which to focus their work. There are no examinations.

Employability

By successfully completing this course, you may find that it makes it easier to gain promotion, or enter jobs in public health departments of primary care trusts. Previous graduates have gained roles such as teenage pregnancy coordinator, health promotion specialist and five-a-day co-ordinator. Others have joined local authorities, the voluntary sector such as Agewell, and become Sure Start managers.

A number of graduates have remained in their roles as health visitors, public health nurses or midwives, working more strategically and in more depth. Overseas students have used the qualification to work successfully in their own countries. Some people have taken the course to work towards becoming a nurse consultant.

The course also provides an excellent foundation for further academic study including PhDs.

What you will study

Principles and Theory of Public Health

This module will include an overview of the history of public health and current theoretical frameworks, the principles of epidemiology and health needs assessment and the importance of public health policies and the wider public health workforce in supporting the application of theory to practice.

Health Economics and Development

This module is designed to provide students with the analytical tools to understand, from an economic perspective: the nature of health care systems internationally; how to assess health care reforms and specific health intervention programmes; and frameworks of health determinants. The module is divided into three main parts; the basic economics of health care systems, evaluation of health care and economic perspectives on health determinants.

Public Health Theory to Social Action

This module will encourage students to undertake activities that will enhance their knowledge on how community development approaches aim to support communities to address health inequalities. In addition it will provide students with the skills to be able to critically analyse and evaluate the relationship between public health theory and its application to social action.

Advanced Epidemiology, Application and Evaluation in Practice

During this module students will further develop and enhance their knowledge and understanding of epidemiological approaches and their application to public health practice.

It particularly aims to develop a practical understanding of how the techniques used to undertake epidemiological studies can be used to gather and interpret knowledge which can support the planning and implementation of new social action initiatives and evaluate existing activities.

Evaluating Evidence to Develop Research and Inform Practice

This module is designed to develop students' critical and practical understanding of research methods which can be applied to inform practice. It requires students to learn about the evaluation of literature, research design along with data collection and interpretation that relates to the student's field. Students will engage with the critical appraisal of evidence from published research literature, qualitative and quantitative methodologies, structured literature reviewing, research ethics, research design, data collection and relevant data analyses.

Placement module

This module is available to our campus-based students.

This module is designed to gain first-hand experience of organisations currently delivering a social determinant approach to delivering public health goals. Students spend 15 days working alongside organisation staff to experience specific aspects of Public Health policy research and practice.

Students select a relevant organisation allowing them to explore, organise and administer an educational placement in an area/organisation of their choosing in terms of specialty and/ or geographical location. The student will consider a person centred approach as well as the key strategic local, national and international imperatives. Students will take responsibility for their learning by setting personal and professional learning outcomes for their placement. The module allows students to demonstrate reflection and reasoning in relation to a specific aspect of Public Health. Longer placements are possible if attached to their chosen dissertation.

Examples of recent placements include spending time at the National Institute of Health and Social Care Excellence; Social Action for Health (a voluntary agency in the East End of London - http://www.safh.org.uk; Health Action Partnership International (a charity advocating for change at a national and global level) and the Centre for Health in Valencia, Spain.

Dissertation

This module requires students to undertake an independent research project, in the form of a critical literature review, on an area of interest that also contributes to the body of knowledge in their profession.

Teaching methods

Modules are delivered via lectures, seminars, tutorials, interactive discussions, directed and self-directed study.

Assessment methods

All modules provide opportunities for you to receive feedback on your academic work. The length and nature of assessments is dependent on module specific learning outcomes. Examples of assessment activities within the programme include written assignments on a given public health perspective, open book examinations, project plans, research proposals and a small scale research study or systematic review.

Modules will have either one larger summative assessment at the end of the module or two smaller assessments, spaced throughout the module. A Pass mark is awarded at 50% or above, and students must gain Pass marks in all modules.

Programme philosophy
As the course is intended for those interested in promoting health and well-being, it has been developed in collaboration with practitioners and specialists in the field of public health and health promotion in the UK. The programme is aimed at multi-agency, multi-disciplinary and multi-professional UK and international students. This programme provides opportunity for students of public health and health promotion to develop their skills to manage change, lead public health programmes, and to work with individuals, groups and communities. This course is for you if you seek a career in public health. There are a range of career opportunities within public health, including public health analyst, public health programme manager and public health specialist. The course can also act as a platform for postgraduate research (MPhil/PhD) study in public health and provides you with sufficient grounding for the UK Faculty of Public Health Part I examination. Upon completion of this course, all students become eligible to apply for fellow membership of the UK Royal Society for Public Health.

Format

Teaching for each of the eight core unit is based on a series of weekly lectures and workshops. Between lectures, your learning will be underpinned by the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (BREO) which is used to provide access to additional guided learning materials and e-learning resources. After you have completed the eight core units, the dissertation unit will provide an opportunity to develop your public health research skills.

Assessment

Each unit is designed to develop your public health skills in ways which are directly relevant to the workplace. This is designed to help you in identifying, reflecting on and meeting your own learning needs.

In order to assist your future professional and career development, each assignment will require you to identify and develop a competency from the UK Faculty of Public Health framework which forms the basis of your learning and underpins your assessment.
