Objectives

Health and health care policy are at the top of the political agenda around the world. Health policy affects and is affected by all of these factors. It aims to meet the growing challenges facing health systems by providing answers to such questions as:

-How can we control spiralling health costs, while maintaining high quality and comprehensive health services?
-What is the most effective way of organising and paying for health care?
-How can we tackle inequalities in health and access to care?
-How can we measure and improve the performance of health systems?

City’s MSc in Health Policy gives you the knowledge and tools you need to understand, analyse and influence the health policy process, and to operate within an increasingly complex policy environment.

You will analyse the social, political and economic factors that affect policy at a local, national and international level. You will explore how and where policy is made, and who the key players are; and learn how to present your ideas clearly and persuasively to a range of influential stakeholders to bring about change.

Placements

You have the opportunity to do a placement, but it is not a formal requirement of the course. We encourage you to create your own. One recent student worked within the refugee camp in Calais alongside the NGO Doctors of the World as part of her dissertation research on refugee access to health care.

Work Placement

You will gain on-the-job work experience with an eight-week (minimum) work placement within the public sector. With faculty support, you will find placements with an appropriate organization. The foundation for the work placement is established over the winter semester.

Your Career

The federal government is the largest single employer in Canada. The provincial governments are a close second, and municipal governments employ hundreds of thousands across the country. The 3.2 million people in the public sector account for almost 20 per cent of all employment. And public sector employees tend to earn higher than average salaries with excellent benefits and working conditions. The course’s variety of teaching and learning styles is reflected in the variety of assessment tools employed throughout the course. Within the general principle of mixed mode formative and summative assessment, we use a diversity of assessment instruments: a range of written assignments, such as essays, reports, portfolios, individual or group classroom presentations, and the dissertation.

The MPA dissertation is a 60 credit project that allows students to pursue individual research on a topic of their choice, within the public administration and public policy fields.

Detailed verbal and written feedback is given on all assessments, and significant tutorial support is given during the dissertation, including bespoke dissertation workshops.

Modular structure

The course consists of five taught modules, a work experience placement in a UK public service organisation (two days a week over 15 weeks), and a triple-module dissertation (which may be completed in your home country).

The network of employers that offer work placements for our students include: the London Boroughs of Hackney, Harrow, Havering, Islington, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, Westminster; government bodies such as the Department of Work and Pensions, and voluntary sector organisations such as Thames Reach, amongst others. International links

The London Met MPA operated two international franchises in Russia, in conjunction with the Higher School of Economics in Moscow and the Urals Academy of Public Administration in Ekaterinburg. London Met MPA staff are regularly invited to contribute to programmes abroad.

Additionally the International Summer School in Public Administration, delivered by core MPA staff, has run since 2003, attracting students of politics, management and public administration.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

Entry requirements (Additional)

English band level 3a - the minimum English Language test scores you need are:
*IELTS – 7.0 (no component lower than 6.5), OR
*TOEFL – 577 (plus minimum Test of Written English score of 5.5), OR

*Pearson (PTE Academic) - 72

If you meet the academic requirements for a course, but not the minimum English requirements, you will be given the opportunity to take an English program to improve your skills in addition to an offer to study a degree at JCU. The JCU degree offer will be conditional upon the student gaining a certain grade in their English program. This combination of courses is called a packaged offer.
JCU’s English language provider is Union Institute of Languages (UIL). UIL have teaching centres on both the Townsville and Cairns campuses.

If you already work in public health, or want to move into this field, this course can prepare you for advancement in your organisation or field, providing you with practical skills and helping you to broaden your knowledge and skill set.

You will gain a thorough grounding in the major areas of public health and also have the opportunity to specialise in your area of interest. In your first year you will undertake a number of core units including epidemiology and biostatistics, health promotion, health policy, public health nutrition and climate change. In your second year you will choose one of the following streams to specialise in:

-Applied epidemiology and biostatistics: epidemiology, geographic information systems, epidemiology of infectious diseases and advanced applied biostatistics
-Public health: public health nutrition practice, organisation of healthcare systems, epidemiology of infectious diseases and health partnerships, politics and power
-Health promotion: health promotion method, health promotion in challenging contexts, evaluation of health promotion, health promotion, media and advocacy
-Health policy and management: organisational ad healthcare system, leadership in healthcare, introduction to health economics, health planning and evaluation

In your second year you will also have the opportunity to carry out research under the guidance of an academic supervisor. You can choose between two research pathways. The first is a 50-credit research project, which you combine with two optional units. For the full list of units, please refer to the Curtin Handbook. The second pathway is more research intensive and comprises a 100-credit research dissertation related to your employment or area of interest.

Master of Public Health students come from a variety of fields, including medicine, nursing, psychology, physiotherapy, pharmacy, dentistry, biomedical and lab-based sciences, nutrition, occupational therapy, occupational health, environmental health, health promotion, statistics and management, among others. 



As a graduate, you may work in a number of fields, including health administration, health protection and health promotion. You may work in the public sector or with non-government organisations, such as the Heart Foundation, the Cancer Council, Red Cross, research institutes, universities and with international bodies like the World Health Organization.

Credit for previous study

Applications for credit for recognised learning (CRL) are assessed on an individual basis.

Applicants who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Public Health or Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health or equivalent may apply for CRL.

Applicants with at least two years’ post-bachelor work experience may apply for up to one semester (100 credits) of CRL.

Public health covers three key domains. The first is health improvement, which includes monitoring specific diseases, risk factors and inequalities. The second is improving services, which includes audit, evaluation, service planning and efficiency. The third domain is health protection, which includes responses to infectious diseases and environmental hazards.

Public Health professionals work in a range of community health areas such as primary health care teams, public health units, drug and alcohol settings, and health and social care settings. There are also opportunities in epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, health administration, health education and health policy.

Potential roles include becoming a manager in the NHS, local authorities and non-statutory sectors. For example, at the top end of the scale, there are roles as Director of Public Health that attract salaries of up to around £100,000. There are also many other opportunities as a public health professional.

Focused on key contemporary debates, this programme examines the challenges of improving access to health care in the United States, the impacts of private finance on the NHS, and the multiple challenges confronting health systems in resource-poor settings.

This programme will give you the skills to design cost-effective health systems that provide equitable access to high-quality healthcare. Presented through our Global Public Health Unit, we offer a highly interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning and integration with the wider University.

The programme allows you to study courses from across the health systems field, including health policy, global politics, health inequalities, economics, financial management and international development.

You’ll find inspiration within our vibrant, international community, and learn from the real world of health systems. Health Care Management Course Structure

Lectures are interactive with students encouraged to contribute their own experience of working in health care and related settings. In addition to lectures course modules include workshops, group discussions, team exercises and student led presentations.

Full-time students will study for 13 months, attending taught modules from October to Easter (part one). Part two is undertaken through the completion of a dissertation which must be submitted by 30th September of the same year.

Part-time students will study the part one modules one day a week over two years (Typically in year one students attend October to Easter on Tuesdays and in year two October to December on Thursdays. Year two January to Easter is modular and the day of attendance will depend on the module selected.), Dissertations must be submitted by 30th September of the third year.

The MSc Health Care Management comprises two parts.

Part one is taught through five compulsory modules and a choice of two optional modules.

Part two requires completion of a dissertation - This independent directed module can only be taken on successful completion of all of the taught modules.

Study Program

The two-year master’s program with 120 ECTS-credits consists of core courses, offered during the first three semesters, and major courses starting in the second semester. The core courses include different modules: human functioning sciences, health systems and services, research design, and quantitative/qualitative research methods. Other core courses include scientific and professional skills development. Starting in the second semester, students can choose a major, according to their interest. After the first year, students will be required to do an internship and start a research project, while the fourth (final) semester will be dedicated to completing the master thesis.

The Master in Public Administration (MPA) at LSBU has been selected by Procurement Services as part of the Government Skills Framework and ranked number one. We are the only London-based University to be approved to deliver both the MPA and MBA awards to government staff.

A Masters degree in Public Administration is an internationally recognised qualification designed for anyone working in local, regional, or central government, or for a charity or public-private partnership wishing to develop their academic and vocational skills.

This Programme addresses some of the key issues facing the public sector such as effective leadership, anticipating and responding to change, performance management, governance and ethical practice and sustainability and gives students the opportunity to develop specialist expertise as well as the ability to respond to an ever-changing and challenging environment.
