Dissertation/Business Project or Placement

In the third term you will complete a 12,000 word dissertation which may be undertaken as a consultancy project within an organisation, during a placement or with one of our international partner institutions. Supervised by a faculty member with relevant experience, you’ll investigate in greater detail a subject that you’ve already studied as part of your programme.

This is an opportunity for you to develop your business insight and present your analysis and ideas in a scholarly and professional manner; combine critical discrimination and a sense of proportion in evaluating evidence and the opinions of others.

The core teaching team on this course is both experienced and dynamic. A key feature of this course is that it includes a work placement module that offers students the chance to experience directly the work of a relevant area of public service in a London-based organisation over a substantial period of time. You will also benefit from the skills and support from our full-time placement and employability officer.

The course’s variety of teaching and learning styles is reflected in the variety of assessment tools employed throughout the course. Within the general principle of mixed mode formative and summative assessment, we use a diversity of assessment instruments: a range of written assignments, such as essays, reports, portfolios, individual or group classroom presentations, and the dissertation.

The MPA dissertation is a 60 credit project that allows students to pursue individual research on a topic of their choice, within the public administration and public policy fields.

Detailed verbal and written feedback is given on all assessments, and significant tutorial support is given during the dissertation, including bespoke dissertation workshops.

Modular structure

The course consists of five taught modules, a work experience placement in a UK public service organisation (two days a week over 15 weeks), and a triple-module dissertation (which may be completed in your home country).

Graduates can expect a host of public administration job opportunities in the contexts of transition and modernisation – the course is ideal for those already employed in the sector who wish to update their skills, or progress to further study.

The work placement is also an excellent opportunity for you to practice the skills and apply the knowledge acquired during the programme, but also to forge long lasting professional relationships within the sector. The network of employers that offer work placements for our students include: the London Boroughs of Hackney, Harrow, Havering, Islington, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, Westminster; government bodies such as the Department of Work and Pensions, and voluntary sector organisations such as Thames Reach, amongst others. Students have praised the work placement for its relevance to their career development and the employability skills it fosters.

International links

The London Met MPA operated two international franchises in Russia, in conjunction with the Higher School of Economics in Moscow and the Urals Academy of Public Administration in Ekaterinburg. London Met MPA staff are regularly invited to contribute to programmes abroad.

Additionally the International Summer School in Public Administration, delivered by core MPA staff, has run since 2003, attracting students of politics, management and public administration.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.

We are pleased to announce that after an intensive two year review of the MPH core subject curriculum that we have made some exciting new changes to the MPH core subjects. Within the review we consulted with employers and staff, reviewed graduate student feedback and benchmarked against MPH offerings around the world. As a result of the review we have developed an novel new core subject, ‘Planning and Priortising in Public Health’, that is focused on practical public health workplace skills. We have also made minor changes to other core subjects with the aim of having an increased focus on the drivers of public health problems, the skills required by all public health practitioners, and planning and managing public health projects and programs. These curriculum and structural changes will enable the ability of the School to continue to produce high quality graduates equipped with relevant knowledge and skills for a breadth of careers within the public health workforce.

Students commencing the Master of Public Health in 2017 and beyond will have the opportunity to complete ‘Planning and Prioritising in Public Health’. Existing students will also have the opportunity to take this subject as an elective from 2017 onwards. These changes will increase the breadth of skills and knowledge gained by students within their MPH experience.

The Master of Public Health has three components:

  1. The core component includes up to six subjects that provide students with a rigorous, multidisciplinary foundation in public health theory and practice, that is essential to all aspects of public health practice;
  2. The specialist component offers students the opportunity to focus on one or more key fields in public health and gain the skills and knowledge required for practice in the area. Specialisations are offered in the fields of Ageing, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Gender and Women’s Health, Global Health, Health Program Evaluation, Health Economics and Economic Evaluation, Health Social Sciences, Indigenous Health, Primary Care, Sexual Health; and
  3. The capstone experience offers students the opportunity to consolidate their specialist training and apply the knowledge gained in the course to real world scenarios. The Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics (SGPE) is part of a unique collaborative venture that combines the teaching expertise of eight Scottish universities: Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt, St Andrews, Stirling and Strathclyde. All three MSc programme degrees are awarded by the University of Edinburgh and are taught in Edinburgh by Economics faculty from the associated Scottish universities who belong to the SGPE.

We offer three MSc programmes that provide you with a high-quality and thorough training in economics. The programmes are challenging, incorporating mathematics and statistics, they are technical and highly focused on analytical theory.

The emphasis is on the use, development and critical evaluation of conceptual models; evidence and methods of analysis; and on practical, effective interventions.

Graduates from this stream work in health care, health policy and public health organisations at local, national and international level in service and academic public health roles.

The population perspective of public health ensures that its practitioners are well placed to improve health wherever they are. Our Master of Public Health degree has been offered by the University for 35 years and we are now offering for the first time an online Masters in Public Health beginning in September 2016.

Why this programme

◾The University of Glasgow has provided education in public health since 1839 and has offered a diploma in public health since the early 20th century. The Master of Public Health programme has been offered here continuously since 1981.
◾The Master of Public Health programme will be taught by academics from a wide variety of organisations and disciplines including: Environmental protection, public health medicine, sociology, and health economics.
◾Public health has a central role in guiding health care practice, influencing health policy, protecting the public, and improving population health. Our MSc Applied Economics is a suite of taught courses that provides rigorous training in all the main aspects of economics.

Starting with a comprehensive refresher course in essential maths and economics skills, you will go on to receive advanced training in the analysis of problems in applied microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and strategic decision-making.

Most importantly, you will then have the opportunity to tailor the course to the area of business or policy you are most interested in, giving you additional expertise and a head start when seeking work in that field.

We are one of the only universities in the UK offering this level of specialisation on this type of master's. You can select from MSc Applied Economics as a standalone option or with one of four specialist pathways:

Whichever pathway you choose, you will develop your knowledge of quantitative methods beyond undergraduate level and gain the mathematical, statistical and econometric skills to carry out quantitative analyses of applied economics problems.

(Previously known as MSc Public Health in Developing Countries) This course equips students with skills needed to appreciate and analyse the state of public health in low- and middle-income countries and to design and evaluate actions to address public health concerns. We consider public health and the provision of health services from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Students on the MSc Public Health for Development have substantial experience planning or implementing public health programmes, of teaching or public-health-related research, based in a low- or middle-income country and wish to hone their critical professional skills. We complement formal teaching with peer learning that builds on this professional experience and frames knowledge of public health within a development context.

Students develop public health research skills including statistics and epidemiology, and build on these to tailor a course to suit their professional needs. In the summer, students undertake a supervised research project which focuses on a Public Health question in a low- or middle-income country.

Term 1:

Terms 2 and 3:

They may also choose to develop a specialist public health focus such as: vector control; maternal and newborn health; sexual and reproductive health; or water, sanitation and health.

Most students take the unifying module Applying Public Health Principles in Developing Countries in Term 3. This module builds on the learning from Terms 1 and 2 so students apply public health disciplines to review evidence, produce policy recommendations, develop strategic public health programme plans and conduct strategic reviews.

Field Trip:
There is a compulsory residential field trip at a cost of £200.

Examinations:
All students take two examinations in the summer, one to assess understanding of the material covered in Term 1 and the other to assess their overall understanding of Public Health for Development.

Project Report:
During the summer months (July - August), students draw on all their academic skills by undertaking a project on a subject of importance to public health in a low- or middle-income country, for submission by early September. The project can take the form of a literature review, analysis of a data set, a policy report or a study protocol. The project is an independent piece of work, but students have contact with their supervisors who guide them in this work.

Graduate Diploma

This one-year diploma is administered by the Department of Economics and provides students with a solid understanding of the main topics in economics. It is a programme largely at an undergraduate level, designed both as an entry qualification for postgraduate study and as a bridge between undergraduate and postgraduate work.

The programme is suitable as a standalone qualification for those wishing to change their career path or develop within their present profession. Alternatively, the Diploma acts as a conversion course for students without previous economics training who wish to take an MSc programme in Economics.

The programme is offered on a full-time basis, over a period of nine months commencing in early September with a three weeks long pre-sessional. Subsequently, students take four courses: Microeconomic Analysis, Macroeconomic Analysis, Quantitative Techniques in Economics OR Econometrics, and EITHER Issues in Economic Development OR International Economics OR Banking and Finance. Assessment is in the form of written examinations and course work. Completion of the Graduate Diploma at an acceptable level allows students to take one of the MScs in Economics in the following year.

The Graduate Diploma may also be taken on a part-time basis over two years. Students undertaking the programme on that basis must take Microeconomic Analysis and Quantitative Techniques in Economics OR Econometrics in the first year, and take Macroeconomic Analysis and EITHER Issues in Economic Development OR International Economics OR Banking and Finance in the second year. The pre-sessional in September requires full-time attendance.

On the same website, please look at the details and content of our Introduction course on Quantitative Methods in Economics which builds on the knowledge resumed in (1) and which is designed to equip you with further technical skills that you will require before starting the MSc. You are strongly advised to attend this course which is offered, free of charge. The course will run during induction week and we recommend that you spend some time between July 1 and September studying and familiarising yourself with the course material on the website, especially if you might not be able to attend the course.
