This level 7 course is made up of two of our most popular modules. Our Certificate of Competence in Educational Testing (CCET) module will teach you how to use psychometric testing instruments effectively and our Access Arrangements Course (AAC) will show you how to apply them in exam access arrangements. Choose from three different study routes

Take our CPT3A and choose from study options designed to fit in with your day-to-day commitments. We are confident that this is an efficient route to becoming a Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) recognised access arrangements assessor.

Route one: Classic (CCET intensive and AAC online)

First, you will attend a three-day intensive version of The Certificate of Competence in Educational Testing (CCET) with online components, followed by the Access Arrangements Course (AAC) element online.

Route two: Online (CCET and AAC online)

The entire course (the CCET and AAC parts) can be studied consecutively online using our intuitive and easy-to-use online learning platform (Campus OnlineTM). This enables you to interact with your tutors and peers, track your own progress and access a wealth of resources. You will also receive a comprehensive training manual.

Route three: Intensive (CCET and AAC intensive)

If you prefer face-to-face learning, our intensive CPT3A with online components is for you. Take our three-day intensive CCET at a quality hotel near you, followed by our one-day AAC at a similarly comfortable venue at locations across the country.

The MSc and MRes Psychological Research Methods has been designed specifically to prepare graduates in Psychology or related disciplines for;

- a PhD degree
- research related careers in academic or applied psychological disciplines
- careers in which data handling and analytical skills are of relevance.
- Students also complete the course as a means of improving their research skills in preparation for further training as a professional psychologist (often as a clinical or educational psychologist).

Both awards are equivalent, although the MSc has a larger taught component whilst the MRes places greater emphasis on the conduct of independent research. You may wish to apply to the MSc in Psychological Research Methods in the first instance and then you can make a choice of award later, in conjunction with the Course Leader and teaching team.

What will you study?

In Term One, all full-time MRes and MSc students complete the same core modules which may include:

In Term Two, students pursuing the MSc award will complete five more taught modules. You also complete a larger empirical research project (worth 100 credits) under the supervision of a research active member of staff. Modules may include:

Facilities

The University has made significant financial investment in the Psychology Division over recent years upgrading accommodation, facilities and equipment used exclusively for the provision of our psychology courses and for research. We have a first class undergraduate teaching laboratory suite and a second teaching laboratory specifically catering for postgraduate students.

In addition there are specialist suites dedicated to particular areas of interest in psychology, including:

social interaction, group work and interviewing
computer gaming and cyberpsychology
eye-tracking
cognitive modelling and visual analysis
psychophysiology.

Alongside these are new flexible cubicles for student project work, a psychometric test bank library, and a technical workshop.

Delivery and assessments

You will be assessed in a variety of ways and on a modular basis through: examinations, coursework, essays, laboratory reports,
oral presentations, research project. The course adopts a pragmatic approach to research, arguing that all research methods and approaches, whether quantitative, psychometric, qualitative, or mixed, should be attuned to the subject-matter and the nature of the research hypothesis or question to be answered. Offering a balanced appreciation of all methodological approaches, their relative strengths and weaknesses, the course will leave you equipped to conduct research in any area of psychology.

Careers

On graduation, you will possess the methodological and practical knowledge required to realise your potential as an independent researcher in various fields of Psychology or in closely related disciplines.

Many of our graduates have gone on to pursue an academic and / or research career in various areas of psychology (by working as a research assistant or associate, for example, or by studying for a PhD). You may choose to use your research methods qualification as a stepping stone to undertaking further training as a professional psychologist (for example, in forensic, clinical, and educational psychology) or to secure careers in data handling and analysis outside psychology.

Your qualification is likely to be popular with many employers because you will have demonstrated an ability to write essays and reports, to master advanced methods of data analysis and to talk and present in front of other people.

You learn to understand the important ethical issues involved in neuroscientific research targeted at various age groups and people with range of cognitive abilities, as well as developmental disorders.

You have an opportunity to learn psychophysiological recording techniques, including electrocardiogram (ECG), Skin Conductance (SC), performance speed and accuracy, as well as perceptual mechanisms using Eprime, Martlab and other specialist software.

We also build your research skills enabling you to work as an independent researcher in this area. You have the opportunity to attend workshops run by experts from relevant professions and fields of work. Examples include private clinical consultants, NHS neuropsychologist, teaching staff from the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology course at the University of Sheffield and alumni from our course working in academia and the private sector.

Our specialist learning resources include psychometric measures for assessing cognitive function and 3D model brains for understanding neuroanatomy. This is a one-year part time taught postgraduate diploma which is designed to prepare teachers and other education professionals to provide and manage a school guidance counselling service. The programme is recognized by the Irish Department of Education and Science, the National Centre for Guidance in Education and the Institute of Guidance Counsellors as a professional, international qualification in Guidance Counselling.

Participants attend Maynooth University one day per week (Friday 9am-4.30pm) and school placement one day per week (Monday). The programme begins with a week’s Summer School (August 26-30 inclusive) during which course participants are introduced to all six modules of the curriculum. Intensive training in Psychometric Testing is scheduled for October mid-term break (Dates to be confirmed).

Dates for the Summer School are to be confirmed.

Programme participants are responsible for arranging the school placement component of the course where they work in close co-operation with the School Guidance Counsellor. Normally, the school placement is within 65 kilometres of the university.

Graduates might also consider alternative careers in healthcare and health research – either within core health providers such as the NHS or within academic departments locally or internationally.
