Gain both theoretical and applied knowledge of clinical cognitive neuroscience. Cognitive neuroscience combines techniques and skills including psychometric testing, electroencephalography (EEG), eye tracking and imaging techniques – for application to neuropathological and healthy groups in clinical, academic or biomedical settings. Various neurobiological mechanisms of cognitive and perceptual functions with demonstration of practical recordings, as well as psychology experimental software are taught on the course.

The course gives you the knowledge and skills to evaluate cognitive and brain function and dysfunction in healthy and neuropathological groups. You learn to understand the important ethical issues involved in neuroscientific research targeted at various age groups and people with range of cognitive abilities, as well as developmental disorders.
You have an opportunity to learn psychophysiological recording techniques, including electrocardiogram (ECG), Skin Conductance (SC), performance speed and accuracy, as well as perceptual mechanisms using Eprime, Martlab and other specialist software.
We also build your research skills enabling you to work as an independent researcher in this area. You have the opportunity to attend workshops run by experts from relevant professions and fields of work. Examples include private clinical consultants, NHS neuropsychologist, teaching staff from the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology course at the University of Sheffield and alumni from our course working in academia and the private sector.
Our specialist learning resources include psychometric measures for assessing cognitive function and 3D model brains for understanding neuroanatomy. You learn to use specialist equipment including • EEG • transcranial magnetic stimulation • analysis of Biopack • structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data • visuo-psychophysics equipment.
Some lectures are taught by guest tutors including clinical psychologists and neuroimaging experts.

Graduates have the skills and knowledge to work in roles involved in assessing and evaluating cognitive function and dysfunction in healthy ageing across the lifespan and patient groups including people with Parkinson’s disease, head injury, dementia, and other neuropathological conditions.
During the course you benefit from employability sessions, where our alumni currently working in academia or industry, clinical psychologists and professionals from private research companies discuss possible career choices.

You can also complete further cognitive neuroscience postgraduate academic work.
Occupational Psychology at Winchester provides you with the skills and knowledge requirement for Stage 1 of the British Psychological Society’s training route in Occupational Psychology, as well as supporting the transition towards Stage 2. It also incorporates the first stage of training towards Practitioner Occupational Psychologist status with the Health and Care Professions Council. There is an emphasis on reflective practice skills as well as a thorough understanding of ethical standards and practice within the discipline.
The programme introduces the context and application of psychology in various occupational and organisational settings. The emphasis is on developing your knowledge in the key areas of leadership, wellbeing at work, work design, and assessment in the workplace, as well as learning, training and development. You are taught by a range of professional occupational psychologists offering experience in a range of specialisms including coaching, use of psychometrics, human factors and leadership development. You benefit from practitioner advice on gaining suitable experience, and by incorporating practice-based assessments.
You have access to excellent facilities including numerous research cubicles and laboratories equipped for conducting interviews, observational research, eye tracking, EEG and psychophysiological measures. There are several staff members in the department with strong research and practice experience in the fields relevant to Occupational Psychology. The teaching team includes HCPC-registered Occupational Psychologists.
We consider the scope of Occupational Psychology from the perspective of the individual, their work organisation and any work with client groups. The programme includes problem-based exercises that may include elements such as mock consultancy reports, psychometric test use experience and development of training based on given scenarios. You develop your ability to appropriately design, conduct, analyse, interpret and evaluate psychological research in a chosen specialised research area within Occupational Psychology.
You complete modules including Leadership and Workplace Engagement, Wellbeing at Work, Work Design, Organisational Change and Development, and Assessment in the Workplace. There is also a module on research methods which helps you to prepare for your research project.
Graduates of the course are prepared to progress to the next stage of the BPS training and to pursue careers in occupational psychology and related fields.

Study how stress affects illness and examine ways to improve individual wellbeing through practical applications in stress management.
Our programme is designed for graduates in psychology and the biological sciences, and professionals from a range of backgrounds including healthcare and counselling. You will gain a robust science-based qualification in the study of stress, dealing specifically with the mechanisms by which psychological stress can induce illnesses and examining issues of measurement, prevalence and management. This is especially pertinent today as you will study occupational stress and management for people in the workplace.
Taught by leading experts in the field, you will learn about how stress medicine and psychoneuroimmunology are growth areas in the discipline. You will be able to conduct and present your research project in an area of your interest. There will be an opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience by recruiting a sample group of subjects for a stress assessment. You will then produce an assessment report which will form the basis of risk assessment and guidance for intervention.
You will gain access to state-of-the-art laboratories and resources for conducting research projects.
In your first semester, you will develop a strong understanding how psychological states can affect physical wellbeing, in particular the role of stress in the development of various diseases, such as coronary heart disease and metabolic disorders including diabetes and mental illnesses. You will gain an in-depth understanding of the health care field and the current developments in stress management.
After the first semester, the emphasis will be on independent study, and you will undertake an in-depth piece of original research. You will learn to collect, combine and analyse data from a range of sources, making critical assessments as you progress. Hands-on experience gained in the recruitment of test group will be invaluable experience for your career in the healthcare.
