About this programme

We draw on current research at the IOE and elsewhere to inform a student's psychology and social science teaching, encouraging them to engage with recent debates, literature and policy in the field. Our underlying aim is to develop students as reflective and highly skilled teachers. As a 14-19 programme, there is an explicit focus on teaching examination classes in an interactive way.

Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.

The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.

Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Completion of the Professional Practice module and one or two level 6 (undergraduate/Bachelor’s level) modules, will lead to the Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE).

Placement

You will spend most of your time (120 days) in schools, working with religious education mentors who support you through your two school placements. In our partner schools and colleges, students teach psychology at AS and possibly A level. At GCSE, most student teachers teach psychology and/or sociology. In some placements there are opportunities to contribute to relevant vocational qualifications and Key Stage 3 humanities. Your responsibilities will be equivalent to a practicing teacher but on a reduced timetable.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered via keynote lectures, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at the IOE, as well as time spent in placement at the host school or alliance. Assessment is by the observation of practical teaching, assignments and a portfolio (which links into continuing professional development in the induction year).

On your PGCE 14-19 course here at Canterbury Christ Church University you will study three University-based modules Curriculum Studies, Professional Studies and Enhanced Studies and one placement-based module Professional Practice.

• Professional Studies

Professional Studies sessions aim to inform you about aspects of professional practice which are central to your work, whatever your subject, including how do we learn, how do we include all children, how is teaching a professional activity, how can education be organised and how can learning be assessed.

• Curriculum Studies

This module involves work in studying key concepts that underpin the various curricula and syllabi for your subject. The sessions allow discussion of different pedagogies and allow reflection on differing school approaches to the subject.

• Enhanced Studies

The module enables you to choose an area of personal interest to you to study this in more depth through a research project based in a school.

Suitability

Our students join the PGCE in psychology with a first or higher degree in psychology, criminology or social sciences or a related degree with work experience.

We welcome applicants who have newly graduated and those with experience in public sector working, business and industry, particularly where this work has enhanced your knowledge, skills and understanding in psychology.

The course is uniquely set up for postgraduates to gain experience teaching, learning and assessment both in a school setting and in college or sixth form environments.

Format

Your university-based sessions are taught through a series of workshops and subject input with an emphasis placed upon informed discussion, debate and knowledge exchange.

You will be prepared in designing and developing subject based materials to support and complement your placement based experience and practice. There is a practical focus on the skills and abilities required for teaching: for example, presentations, planning and assessment strategies. There is pair, group work, discussions and micro-teaching alongside an individual, personalised approach to developing as a professional teacher.

Assessment

Your assessment on PGCE 14-19 course here at Canterbury Christ Church University is through formative methods with a final grading completed at the end of the PGCE.

Each of your three University-based modules (Curriculum, Professional and Enhanced Studies) are assessed through a 4,000 word small-scale research piece and with each of these modules offering you the opportunity to gain 20 Masters level credits it is possible to gain a total of 60 Masters level credits through these three modules.

Both your two Professional Practice placements are formatively and then summatively assessed through the teaching files you have created, your reflective Learning Journal, regular lesson observations by the teachers/lecturers you work with on a day to day basis, your Curriculum Mentors in your teaching placements and your University tutor. There is also an Interim and Final report from both your teaching placements.

The Faculty of Education has a longstanding national reputation for providing high-calibre initial teacher training with over 20 Secondary specialisms available. We have a well established partnership with over 800 secondary schools and colleges across the North West region and beyond.

Our PGCE Psychology is aimed at trainees wishing to teach one or more of the social sciences (sociology, psychology and politics) in secondary schools and/or post-16 colleges.

It is amongst the first in the country designed to offer specific training to teach in the 14-19 sector and offers a trainee teacher exchange and links to schools in Europe and the USA. You will have the opportunity to learn about the common core areas taught in UK Psychology departments.

A special feature is that sessions are delivered by experienced team leaders for Psychology GCE. There will also be the opportunity to have sessions with some of the top practitioners and authors in the world of Psychology.

This course is available via University led and School Direct routes.

Placement options

School placements are central to the course. Trainees on the University-led ('Core') route typically spend at least 120 days on school-based training. As an intending teacher you will begin by developing professional awareness, understanding and skills common to learning and teaching in a variety of settings. You will begin to understand the inter-relationship between the school and its community.

Placements are organised by Manchester Met and will be in at least two different schools or colleges and ranging from inner city to rural settings, mixed and single gender schools, City Academies, Comprehensives and Selective Schools, 11-16, 11-18, sixth form and further education colleges.

School Direct trainees are attached to a specified ('lead') school within an alliance of schools and will typically spend at least 135 days on school-based training, depending on the term-times of the school(s) involved. The lead school organises placements.

All trainees also have the opportunity to apply for a four week enrichment experience overseas. These help to develop an international educational perspective and provide the chance to gain some teaching experience in an international school. Enrichment is in addition to PGCE units of study and opportunities may differ year on year, for example, in 2016 trainees were placed at British International Schools in Kazakhstan, Cyprus or Norway or public schools in Orleans, France.

Students follow a programme of study that introduces them to the philosophy of education, epistemology, curriculum theory, pedagogical methods including fieldwork, cognitive psychology and child development, assessment, pedagogical content knowledge for the geography curriculum and contemporary education issues.

This theoretical study is combined with teaching practice, which consists of one placement in the autumn and one in the spring/summer. Fieldwork is undertaken in both London and the Lake District.

The Psychology PGCE programme has been designed to enable all students to demonstrate that they have met the Teachers' Standards across Key Stages 4 and 5 (14–19 age range). This programme prepares students to teach psychology in a flexible and exciting way.

About this programme

We draw on current research at the IOE and elsewhere to inform a student's psychology and social science teaching, encouraging them to engage with recent debates, literature and policy in the field. Our underlying aim is to develop students as reflective and highly skilled teachers. As a 14-19 programme, there is an explicit focus on teaching examination classes in an interactive way.

Students undertake two level 7 (Master’s-level) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.

The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level (level 7) modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.

Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Completion of the Professional Practice module and one or two level 6 (undergraduate/Bachelor’s level) modules, will lead to the Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE).

Placement

You will spend most of your time (120 days) in schools, working with mentors who support you through your two school placements. In our partner schools and colleges, students teach psychology at AS and possibly A level. At GCSE, most student teachers teach psychology and/or sociology. In some placements there are opportunities to contribute to relevant vocational qualifications and Key Stage 3 humanities. Your responsibilities will be equivalent to a practicing teacher but on a reduced timetable.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered via keynote lectures, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at the IOE as well as time spent in placement schools or colleges. Assessment is by practical teaching, assignments and portfolio tasks.

Students will also record their progress in a Career Entry and Development Profile statement. This will form part of an ongoing portfolio charting the student's continuing professional development.

The PGCE Secondary (Religious Education) is an innovative and intensive nine-month course preparing graduates for the demands of teaching in the secondary sector.

As a PGCE religious education student teacher you’ll explore the space between the ‘facts of religion’, the minds that perceive, filter and interpret them and the beliefs, motivations or convictions that inform people’s perceptions. This will allow you to ensure you are able to research, prepare and teach all aspects of the curriculum effectively. You will be awarded a PGCE and recommended for Qualified Teacher Status, enabling you to teach in schools. The course is organised in partnership with Schools where you spend a total of 24 weeks teaching within the 36 week long course.

Course detail

All PGCE courses cover three main areas: Curriculum Studies, Professional Studies and Enhanced Studies. However, all learning on the course is designed to complement professional practice and the academic study will be informed by and inform practice.

PGCE students will be placed in two schools for a mixture of blocked time and serial (e.g. one day a week) time adding up to meet the current Government requirement for a minimum 120 days in school.

You can exit the PGCE courses with one of two awards. The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is awarded to those students who gain less than 40 Level 7credits, but who pass all modules, gaining 100 or 120 Level 6 credits. If you achieve 40 or 60 Level 7 credits and pass all the modules, you will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). All students completing a PGCE will also be recommended for QTS.

• Professional Studies

Professional Studies sessions aim to inform you about aspects of professional practice which are central to your work, whatever your subject, including how do we learn, how do we include all children, how is teaching a professional activity, how can education be organised and how can learning be assessed.

• Curriculum Studies

This module involves work in studying key concepts that underpin the various curricula and syllabi for your subject. The sessions allow discussion of different pedagogies and allow reflection on differing school approaches to the subject.

• Enhanced Studies

The module enables you to choose an area of personal interest to you to study this in more depth through a research project based in a school.

Format

Across the PGCE year there is an equivalent of 12 weeks of taught input which take place at university on the Canterbury Campus. The teaching on these days will be a mixture of seminar and workshop activity. There will also be a small number of lecture inputs.

Across the PGCE year there is the equivalent of 24 weeks spent in school. Student teachers will learn in a variety of ways in school, including from experienced mentors, through observing others and through experience. There is also a degree of individual support for learning offered in this course provided by mentors in school and the university tutors.

Tutors and mentors who lead the learning on this course are all qualified teachers.

Assessment

You will be assessed in two main ways­ via academic assignments and assessment of your teaching.

You will submit academic assignments for 20 credits in each curriculum, professional and enhanced studies modules. Each submission will include a written element, but you may also be assessed via presentations or practical performances as relevant to your chosen subject options.

What can I do next?

Upon successful completion of the course students can teach in schools as qualified teachers.

Cope effectively in the classroom by developing your classroom management and control skills.

The PGCE Secondary is a course in Initial Teacher Training which is accredited by the DfE, the successful completion of which will accord you Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Our course has recently been inspected by Ofsted which resulted in an “Outstanding” grading for all aspects of our provision.

Each student teacher on the course specialises in one of the subjects listed above. Subject pedagogy is explored in curriculum groups, examining techniques for making each subject accessible and stimulating in a classroom environment.

Structure and Assessment

The course is organised as three modules:

Professional Issues in school based education
Teaching and Learning in the Curriculum
Self-directed Study

The Professional Issues in School Based Education relates to the Teacher Standards and is delivered in two parts, prior to each of the two extended teaching practices. The teaching is related to those classroom-based issues such as the psychology of learning, the law, curriculum groups, examining techniques for making each subject accessible and stimulating in a classroom environment and is followed up in subject groups and during school placements The block practices in the Autumn and Spring allow for practical opportunities for full professional development where there is a progression from observation, structured activities and group work to whole class work.

Teaching and Learning in the Curriculum and Self Directed Study are studied at Masters Level. The Teaching and Learning in the Curriculum Module draws on the international research expertise within the School of Education enabling student teachers to engage critically in issues relevant to the classroom and school, particularly those that impact on the success of children as learners. The Self Directed Study module draws on students’ experience during weekly visits to schools and their own small scale action research, and links this to critical engagement with published educational research.

These Masters modules provide an opportunity to explore, in a more theoretical way, the issues to do with teaching and learning through lectures and mixed subject and phase seminar groups taught in addition to sessions taught in a conference week usually after Christmas. In addition to covering Teacher standards these modules will enable assessment work to be carried out for the award of PGCE.

On successful completion of the course, student teachers will have 90 credits and QTS.
