In 2008 the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies project began in order to improve the capacity of psychological therapy services for people with common mental health problems (depression and anxiety) in the UK. The psychological wellbeing practitioner role was created as part of this project in order to support the delivery of psychological therapies within a stepped care system. The stepped care system is promoted by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) which works on the principle of offering the least intrusive and most effective treatment (low intensity interventions) in the first instance and increasing the intensity of treatment as required.

Course details

This programme provides education and training that meets the requirements of the Department of Health (2011) curriculum for psychological well-being practitioners by:
-Providing you with a substantial knowledge base appropriate to master's level study
-Facilitating the acquisition of core therapeutic and technical skills that underpin low intensity psychological interventions
-Enabling you to develop a positive attitude and commitment towards lifelong learning and personal and development planning
-Ensuring you are prepared to meet the challenges of current and future contemporary mental health services

What you study

There are eight core themes that run through the award via three modules. They help you to make clear links between theory and practice and include:

Teaching

Teesside University campus. There is also a practical element to the programme and so you must have a clinical placement with access to a practice supervisor qualified and experienced to deliver low intensity interventions underpinned by cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Assistance will be given to find a suitable placement.

Learning is through a combination of presentations, group discussion and role-play activities as well as self-directed study and supervised practice in the workplace.

Assessment is through role-play and real patient activities, an examination and practice competencies. All written academic work is marked at master’s level.

Employability

This award prepares you for your role as a psychological wellbeing practitioner. You are eligible to apply for accreditation with the British Psychological Society.

Facilities

The University has made significant financial investment in the Psychology Division over recent years upgrading accommodation, facilities and equipment used exclusively for the provision of our psychology courses and for research. We have a first class undergraduate teaching laboratory suite and a second teaching laboratory specifically catering for postgraduate students.

In addition there are specialist suites dedicated to particular areas of interest in psychology, including:

social interaction, group work and interviewing
computer gaming and cyberpsychology
eye-tracking
cognitive modelling and visual analysis
psychophysiology.

Alongside these are new flexible cubicles for student project work, a psychometric test bank library, and a technical workshop.

Delivery and assessment

The course is delivered primarily through interactive workshops and discussions, small group teaching and one-on-one supervision, although there may also be some lectures.

You will be assessed in a variety of ways and on a modular basis through:

Career opportunities

Students generally choose the MSc Psychological Wellbeing and Mental Health because they wish to pursue a career working in a mental health setting or because they already work in such a setting and hope to improve their prospects of promotion and career progression. You may choose to pursue an academic and / or research career in psychology following graduation (by working as a research assistant or associate, for example, or by studying for a PhD). Psychology graduates with BPS GBC status may also be interested in this course if they are considering doctoral study towards a career as a clinical or counselling psychologist.

The MSc programme:

has been developed to enable you to extend the PGDip Evidence-based Psychological Practice (Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner) into a MSc by undertaking a piece of empirical research. The research dissertation will allow you to follow your research interests in a topic related to low intensity CBT or a project related to a service-based development need in this area. Supervision is provided by a clinical/psychological therapies researcher with provision available to support project supervision over the telephone or through internet-based software applications to improve access to the programme.

To progress to the MSc you should have completed the research module as part of your PGDip. If you have not completed this module, or cannot evidence completing a previous Masters level research module, you will be required additionally to complete the research module PYCM002 Methodological Approaches in Psychological Therapies Research (http://cedar.exeter.ac.uk/programmes/description/index.php?moduleCode=PYCM002).

This certificate provides the formal training required as part of a student's employment within an Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service. Students on this programme will secure a placement working as a trainee Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP) delivering low intensity cognitive behavioural interventions.

Degree information

Trainees on this programme will gain the knowledge necessary for providing low intensity interventions for clients with mild to moderate depression and anxiety in their primary healthcare work setting, together with the clinical skills essential to assess and engage clients, and to deliver interventions within a guided self-help model.

Students undertake modules to the value of 60 credits.

The programme consists of three core modules (20 credits each) which are based on the Richards and Whyte (2011) Reach Out National Curriculum for Low Intensity Interventions. There are no optional modules for this programme.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops, skills practice, clinical seminar skills groups, directed reading and e-learning. Assessments are through a combination of written and oral assignments. Written assignments include an examination, a case report and reflective accounts. Oral assignments are role-play client sessions and supervision sessions.

Careers

The Postgraduate Certificate is the formal training required as part of the student's employment as an IAPT Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner. Trainee PWPs are appointed at band 4 and upon successful completion of the programme will move to being qualified PWPs. It is anticipated that trainees will stay in these positions after completing the programme, working as a qualified PWP in an IAPT service.

Options for career development include progression to senior PWP positions, or moving into related fields such as IAPT high intensity therapy, teaching, social work and clinical psychology.

The UCL programme is run and taught by experienced practitioners in the field, and therefore a balance is achieved between the teaching of the theoretical knowledge needed and the practical skills necessary in training as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP).

This course offers an exciting and rewarding opportunity to develop your skills in evidence based low intensity cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) interventions for common mental health problems and to gain the accreditation you need to practice as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP).

The Postgraduate Certificate Primary Care Mental Health Practice and Graduate Certificate Promoting Psychological Wellbeing are fully accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) on behalf of the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) National Programme. It is nationally recognised for its high quality training provision and highly skilled teaching team in the field of Low Intensity CBT interventions.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

Learning takes place in both academic and clinical environments. In university you will be involved in lectures, small group work, role plays, video taped sessions and seminars. You will also be working under supervision with a client group in a primary care setting.

The course is assessed via a variety of methods. Clinical and academic work is integrated through the production of case study presentations and seminar presentations. Role plays are recorded and critiqued and clinical practice documents provide an opportunity to assess practice.

You will develop your competence in psychological clinical assessment and low-intensity CBT interventions, including behavioural activation, exposure and habituation, panic management, cognitive restructuring, sleep management, problem solving and medication concordance. The course is heavily focused upon the development of clinical skills in the IAPT approved clinical methods.

Most mental health problems are managed in primary care. Improving access to services which can effectively treat people experiencing common mental health problems will have a major impact on the health and well-being of the population. Primary care is now the cornerstone of the NHS and needs to be able to meet the growing demands placed upon it. By offering practitioners the opportunity to develop and enhance skills in low intensity interventions and guided self-help for common mental health problems this course hopes to support a work force that can effectively meet the changing needs in primary mental healthcare.

Students will critically examine the history and development of primary care services and the impact that this has had on the developing culture of services and the roles and responsibilities of individuals in contemporary primary care mental health practice. You will also be introduced to concepts of mental health philosophies, models and frameworks for safe and competent mental health care. Collaborative skills in engagement, patient-centred interviewing, problem formulation, goal setting, clinical implementation and routine measurement, the promotion of medication concordance, co-ordination and referral will provide the focus of the course.

The MRes Health and Wellbeing aims to develop an interdisciplinary understanding of the social, biological and environmental drivers of individual health behaviours and interventions appropriate to develop health and wellbeing. It is designed to extend your understanding of the social science underpinning the development of effective interventions, strategies and policies aimed at sustainable improvement in health and wellbeing, and reducing physical and psychological health inequalities. The programme examines contemporary issues related to modifiable disease risk behaviours, and the determinants and correlates of these lifestyle behaviours across the lifespan. You should develop an understanding of the interdisciplinary skills and processes to translate scientific research into practical health and wellbeing applications.

The programme aims to prepare you for a career as a professional researcher in either academic or non-academic environments. It aims to provide you with a range of transferable skills appropriate to Masters level research within this theme, and to provide you with a solid foundation for embarking on doctoral level studies. Upon graduation you should be well equipped to progress to PhD study or work in the area of health and wellbeing policy and practice.

Learning and teaching

The programme will adopt a range of small group teaching methods alongside the encouragement of independent study. An innovative element of the programme will be to integrate inter-institutional teaching through the ‘Contemporary Debates in Lifestyle Behaviours and Public Health’ interdisciplinary module aimed at providing an insight into the challenges of working across disciplines with staff and fellow students.

The MRes Health and Wellbeing is available for study 12 months full-time, studied over three terms, and is University-based throughout this time

The programme aims to challenge the preconceptions and practice of participants, as well as developing their knowledge, skills, competencies and ability to reflect and learn from their own professional practice. There is a strong emphasis on students' own practice, and students are encouraged to base their studies on the issues and situations they face in their own field.

The aim of the programme is to develop reflective occupational health, safety and wellbeing practitioners able to understand, develop, implement and monitor both, traditional safety concepts and contemporary health and wellbeing strategies and interventions in the context of the 21st century occupational health environment.

Course Content

For the Postgraduate Certificate, students must complete the following modules:

• Principles and Practice of Risk Assessment (10 Credits): Examine theoretical and practical approaches to risk assessment, hazard identification and risk control and evaluate their impact on the management of workplace hazards.
• Risk Perception & Communication (10 credits): Critically appraise the impact of psychological and psychosocial factors upon the perception and communication of, and response to, a range of risks and threats to health and wellbeing.
• Applied Research Methods and Design (20 credits): Develop the qualitative and quantitative research skills necessary to undertake research and evaluate interventions and day-to-day practice
• Management of Occupational Health and Wellbeing (20 Credits): Formulate appropriate control strategies and interventions to effectively manage a range of health and wellbeing issues across a variety of environments.

For the Postgraduate Diploma, students undertake the above modules, plus the following core modules:

• Individual & Organisational Change H&S (10 Credits): Appraise factors which influence organisational response to the management and performance of health, safety and wellbeing.
• Management of Safety Performance (20 Credits): Identify and appraise proactive and reactive approaches to managing, monitoring, reviewing and auditing safety performance in the workplace.
• Reflecting on Professional Development (10 Credits): Reflect on your learning, practice and experiences in order to evidence the development of your professional development. (Typically this module includes an element of work based learning and the completion of two work based projects.)
• Developing Health Safety and Wellbeing Strategies & Interventions (20 Credits): Enable students to integrate conceptual frameworks, policies and approaches to intervention through the development of a multidisciplinary intervention on an identified occupational health, safety & wellbeing issue. (Typically this module includes the analysis of live data and information from a collaborating organisation.)

To obtain the MSc, students must also complete a research project (60 credits):

• Research Project (60 credits): Design, plan and undertake a piece of independent applied research, and present the findings.

All of the above modules have been mapped against Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Higher Level Qualification Accreditation Framework 2013.

Assessment

The programme is assessed by coursework. Examples of assessment tasks include: reports, essays, oral presentations, group work and posters. Assessment tasks encourage students to select specific topics of study that are relevant to them and their practice.

Employability & Careers

Graduate Membership of IOSH

Students who successfully complete the MSc programme will be eligible for Graduate membership of IOSH and will subsequently be able to begin the Initial Professional Development (IPD) stage of their progression to gaining Chartered status.

Improved career and /or academic progression

Students who have completed the MSc at Cardiff Metropolitan University have gained senior management and Director Level positions. Other students have gone on to undertake a PhD or lecture at university.

Programme description

This programme offers a unique perspective: that children and young people’s mental health and well-being is influenced by developmental processes at multiple levels, from individual to socio-cultural and that approaches to working with mental health and well-being need to be informed by this dynamic and interactional system.

By drawing on the knowledge and clinical experience of a world-class department of clinical and health psychology, the programme aims to equip students with the knowledge necessary for understanding children and young people’s mental health and well-being from this unique perspective. The programme will also draw upon many other theoretical areas, including early intervention, health promotion, public health, health and social inequalities, critical psychology, developmental psychopathology and resilience.

The programme is part time, fully online, and has been designed with professionals in mind; the online delivery format and part-time study options allow for professionals from a range of disciplinary backgrounds to develop knowledge and practice whilst continuing to meet individual life and work demands.

The core elements of the programme include both conceptual and applied courses. At the conceptual level, the programme will review different theories of children and young people’s mental health involved in the complex structure of typical and atypical development. At the applied level it will include the application of psychological knowledge to difficulties experienced by children and young people and the critical appraisal of psychological knowledge and practice.

Distinctive features of the course, include:

- the critical integration of clinical and professional practice with current theoretical and empirical developments in the evidence base for, and delivery of, mental health programmes for children and young people;
- flexibility of delivery;

Programme structure

This programme offers a flexible postgraduate degree designed for recent graduates and professionals who are interested in studying at an advanced level.

The programme is designed to be completed part-time. The minimum period the course can be completed is two years, with a maximum completion time of six years.

There are a number of qualification routes available; students enrol on the MSc programme pathway and can exit at any of the following qualification junctures:

Dissertation
Over the summer you will complete a research-based dissertation of up to 15,000 words, individually supervised by a member of staff from one of the centres in the school.

The MRes in Health and Wellbeing offers useful preparation for a number of careers. Foremost, the MRes is the academic basis and preparation for students choosing the 1+3 programme (the first year is the MRes and the +3 the PhD programme).

The MRes emphasises ESRC-accredited research methods training, the ability to plan, research and write a sophisticated dissertation, and the ability to think in broad theoretical and interdisciplinary terms about challenging issues. These provide an ideal introduction to academic research.

After achieving the MRes, our students go on to employment in a range of careers that touch on areas of government policy and health promotion at local, national and international level, while other students have continued within academic careers, taking up doctoral positions and research associate positions in UK and international universities.

The programme also establishes a sound research training base, along with practical applications, which gives our students a competitive edge for different types of employment, including research, policy and intervention implementation.
