This unique programme accredited by the British Psychological Society aims to equip students to apply the scientific and theoretical principles and ideas of health psychology using a scholarly and critical approach, and to develop the practical skills and knowledge required for employment or research in the field.

About this degree

The programme is regularly reviewed by an advisory board including world-renowned experts in health psychology. It provides a thorough grounding in theories, concepts and empirical findings central to current health psychology. Students are encouraged to develop their own area of specialisation, and are given formal training in quantitative and qualitative research methods.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

Dissertation/report

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation written up as a mock paper submission to the British Journal of Health Psychology.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, class exercises, project work, training workshops, journal clubs and hands-on computer-based teaching on statistical analysis techniques. Assessment is through coursework (including critical reviews and essays), one unseen examination and the research project. Students are also offered a short work placement.

The Health Psychology MSc is run within the UCL Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care, which houses 13 research groups, of which two – the Health Behaviour Research Centre (HBRC), and the Psychobiology Group – provide direct support to the MSc.

The HBRC is one of the largest health psychology research groups in the UK, and undertakes research aimed at advancing understanding of behaviours that have a major impact on health, and contributing to the development of interventions to promote healthy lifestyles. The Psychobiology Group is a multidisciplinary group concerned with the pathways through which sociodemographic and psychosocial factors influence physical disease processes.

This environment provides students with unique networking opportunities, being taught by specialists in their field, and completing relevant placements in clinical, academic or policy-related settings. This BPS-accredited conversion course is designed for graduates who wish to pursue a career in psychology but need to acquire the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) of the British Psychological Society (BPS). You do not need to have studied psychology to be eligible for this programme. However, you should note that it is an intensive course and requires hard work and independent study outside the contact hours – full-time study IS full-time. We welcome applications from graduates with upper second class degrees who have either completed a degree in another subject or who have insufficient psychology in their degree to be eligible for GBC.

Course content

MEd Psychology of Education brings graduates from other disciplines up to the academic standard of an honours degree in psychology, while exploring how the core areas of psychology can be applied in educational settings.  

It demonstrates how the core areas of psychology - developmental, social, cognitive, psychobiology, individual differences and research methods - can be applied in educational settings. It is therefore an excellent starting point for individuals wishing to pursue a career in educational psychology.

You will: 

  • develop critical skills in the evaluation and analysis of current research, theory and practice in psychology and education
  • experience an ethos of independent and co-operative learning and research
  • gain eligibility for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Status from the British Psychological Society, the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist.

Teaching and learning

Timetabling

Teaching takes place on Mondays and Thursdays between 1.30-4pm and 5.30-8pm. Part-time students can choose to attend either both afternoons, both evenings or all of one day

We take a varied approach throughout the course. In terms of teaching and learning, the course units are delivered through lectures, tutorials, group-work, practicals and simulations, case-based approaches, and enquiry-based learning. We encourage both individual and co-operative learning and research and hope to foster an ethos of lifelong learning. Many students are experienced teachers and we appreciate the wealth of knowledge and practical experience you bring with you on the course. During research-based learning sessions we encourage you to use all sources of information, including each other. You will receive comprehensive training in the use of electronic databases, library resources, and statistics and qualitative analysis packages. Many other key skills will be developed during the course.

Coursework and assessment

The form of the assessment varies from unit to unit. Written assessment for a course unit usually totals 3,000 words, and may be in the form of an essay, critical review, research report or research proposal. All assessments will be followed by both formative and summative feedback. The dissertation is the report of an empirical research project investigating an aspect of psychology as applied to education in its broadest sense. It is 15,000 words long.

As the MEd confers eligibility for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Status from the British Psychological Society, a career pathway for our graduates is professional training as a psychologist (e.g. Doctorate in Educational and Child Psychology) and we have a good conversion rate in this regard with recent MEd graduates accepted onto doctorate-level training in educational, clinical and counselling psychology. The knowledge and skills gained by psychology graduates means that they are highly regarded by employers (Higher Education Careers Services Unit, November 2010) for work in areas such as health and social care, marketing and PR, management and human resources, education, and the public sector. Many of our graduates use the skills they have acquired to gain promotion or develop their existing careers, whilst others take the opportunity to change profession, for example, moving into teaching, research or working as assistant psychologists and in related positions (e.g. child and adolescent mental health worker). A small number of students go on to study for a doctorate by research (PhD) in educational psychology (which in itself opens a career pathway to working as a researcher or lecturer in higher education). From the basic biology of neurons through to complex processes of perception and decision-making behaviour, we address how the mind, brain, and body work together and translate this knowledge into clinical applications for patient benefit.

We offer MPhil supervision in the following research areas:

Motor systems development, plasticity and function

We conduct clinical and preclinical studies of normal and abnormal development and plasticity of the motor system. We run functional studies and computer modelling of motor system activity throughout the neuraxis. We also research the development and assessment of novel therapies for motor disorders/lesions including stem cell and brain-machine interface.

Visual system development, plasticity and repair]]
We research the development and assessment of novel neuro-technological approaches to retinal dystrophy repair including brain-machine interface and stem cells. We use in vitro approaches to look at retinal development and visual system wiring.

[[Neural computation and network systems
We conduct experimental and theoretical (computational) studies aimed at understanding how neurones throughout the brain interact in localised networks to compute complex tasks. Our research looks at the role of network activity in a wide range of neurological, neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders.

Auditory neuroscience

We conduct clinical and preclinical studies aimed at understanding the brain mechanisms involved in detection, discrimination and perception of sound. We are interested in how these mechanisms are affected in individuals with brain disorders, including dementia, autism and stroke.

Pain

Our research focuses on:
-Understanding mechanisms underlying pain, analgesia, and anaesthesia
-The development of methods to assess pain and to alleviate pain in animals and humans

Psychobiology

We conduct studies in laboratory animals, healthy volunteers and patient populations investigating the mechanisms underlying mood, anxiety and addiction disorders and their treatment. Allied research looks at normal neuropsychology, and the physiology and pharmacology of neurotransmitter and endocrine systems implicated in psychiatric disorders.

Neurotoxicology

Our research focuses on delineating the effects and understanding the mechanisms of action of established and putative neurotoxins, including environmental and endogenous chemicals, and naturally occurring toxins.

Forensic psychiatry and clinical psychology

Our research covers:
-The assessment, treatment and management of sex offender risk
-Development and assessment of cognitive models
-Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) treatment for bipolar disorder, psychosis, anxiety and developmental disorders
-Developmental disorders of perception and cognition

Systems and computational neuroscience

We conduct theoretical (computational) and experimental studies aimed at understanding the neuroanatomy, neuropharmacology of vision, visual attention and episodic memory.

Behaviour and evolution

Many research groups take an evolutionary and comparative approach to the study of brain and/or behaviour, comparing brain function and behaviour among such disparate groups as insects, birds and mammals, and studying the ecological and evolutionary functions of behaviour. Much of our work is at the forefront of the fields of neuroethology, behavioural ecology and comparative cognition, and has important implications for the study and practice of animal welfare.

We have worked with organisations such as the Medway Community health care, Asthma UK, SmartLife inc and Sport England. Our areas of research are wide ranging, including sports training, performance, fatigue, nutrition, hamstring injuries, sport psychology, cardiac rehabilitation.

First-class sports facilities and State-of-the-art equipment

The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences has excellent purpose-built facilities. For exercise testing, the School has everything you would expect and more, including state-of-the-art treadmills, cycle and rowing ergometers, an isokinetic dynamometer, brain and muscle stimulators, and blood testing and gas analysis equipment, sport and exercise science laboratories, teaching and student clinics, multiple physiology laboratories, a biomechanics laboratory which is equipped with 3D motion capture cameras and force plates, two large therapy clinics and two rehabilitation gyms, a psychobiology laboratory and a respiratory clinic. We were the first university in the UK to install an anti-gravity treadmill in our rehabilitation gym. Using NASA technology, this treadmill is a valuable resource for professional athletes as they look to speed up their return to fitness. Within our neuromuscular laboratory, we have equipment for transcranial magnetic and direct current stimulation and peripheral muscle and nerve stimulation. These devices allow us to manipulate and test areas of the muscle and brain before and during exercise. Only a handful of universities in the UK have access to such state-of-the-art equipment.

We have a heat and altitude environmental chamber that can create various environmental conditions to stimulate the most extreme conditions found around the world. 

The facilities at Medway Park were specified to the highest standards in order to support athletes at pre-Olympic training camps and to enable world-leading research.

The general resources on campus are first class. The well-stocked Drill Hall Library has:

Our award-winning Medway campus near Chatham Historic Dockyard was built at the start of the 20th century. You can get advice, study, socialise, or grab a bite to eat at our newly-refurbished Student Hub, or meet friends for a drink or food at a range of cafes and restaurants across campus.

Five minutes’ walk from campus, the Dockside retail outlet offers a wide range of shops and restaurants. Nearby is the town of Rochester with its historic castle and stunning cathedral, which is one of the venues for Kent’s degree congregations.

There is also a hypoxic environmental chamber, and analytical chemistry, respiratory testing and psychobiology laboratories. The School operates a commercial sports injury and rehabilitation clinic, respiratory clinic and sports performance services from Medway Park to support elite athletes, regional squads and local residents. Thesis overview

The most challenging aspect of 4th year studies is the research thesis. The thesis component is designed for students to demonstrate their ability to conceive, conduct, and report on, high level, original research. The research thesis is carried out under the supervision of an academic member of staff, and is assessed against a number of criteria. Briefly, these criteria relate to the student’s command of the area under investigation, from the conceptualisation of the problem, through the development of an appropriate strategy to investigate the problem, to clear interpretation and reporting on the outcomes of the research. The research thesis consists of two subjects.
- PSYC71-400 Diploma Thesis 1: Research Seminar and Ethics
- PSYC72-420 Diploma Thesis 2

The thesis subjects are to be completed in two consecutive semesters, regardless of full- or part-time enrolment status.

- Fourth Year Orientation Session
Students are expected to attend the fourth-year orientation session held during Bond Orientation Week, which is the week before classes start. During this session students are given full details of the requirements for their fourth year of studies in psychology.

Important notes for students

Upon completion of 4th year training (e.g., the Graduate Diploma or the Honours program) many students apply for provisional registration as a psychologist. Provisional registration permits the professional practice of psychology and can be achieved either through a Board approved Supervised Practice Program (two years of supervised practice), or through Postgraduate studies in Psychology. Students who intend to apply for provisional registration following their 4th Year studies should be aware of the registration requirements as administered by the Psychology Board of Australia under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act 2009. Information on Psychology Board of Australia registration requirements can be obtained from http://www.psychologyboard.gov.au

Students who obtain their undergraduate qualifications outside of an ‘approved qualification’ in Australia must have them assessed as being equivalent to an accredited three year sequence of study in psychology in Australia, prior to being granted provisional registration. Undergraduate transcripts of students wishing to undertake their 4th year studies at Bond from non-Australian institutions are carefully checked by the 4th Year Coordinator to determine equivalence with an APAC accredited 3-year sequence of study in Australia. Transcripts are checked to ensure that subject matter undertaken in the undergraduate sequence matches core areas within the discipline (e.g., perception, memory, learning, motivation and emotion, psychobiology, personality, emotion, developmental psychology, social psychology, and abnormal psychology), and includes statistics and research methods. When assessing suitability for entry into 4th year programs, Bond University makes every effort to ensure that core topics covered in undergraduate degrees obtained outside of Australia are equivalent to those required in an accredited three-year sequence of study in psychology in Australia, however we do not guarantee the equivalence of these degrees.

Cognitive Psychology is a fascinating area of psychology that is relevant to a range of problems in the modern world. For instance, how; do mobile phones distract attention during driving? What factors influence our purchasing decisions? What are the effects of brain injury and aging on cognition and behaviour? Cognitive psychologists use techniques from psychology and neuroscience to address these and other issues and can have careers in academic, military, and industry research or, with additional clinical training, work with patients suffering from cognitive limitations arising from brain injury. Studying our MSc in Cognitive Psychology will give you exposure to advanced training with specialist cognitive neuroscience methods such as EEG and eye-tracking, research design and statistics, and the opportunity to explore a range of contemporary findings in cognitive psychology with our expert academics in a friendly small group setting. Our MSc Psychology programmes are designed to foster a vibrant and collaborative peer culture amongst our MSc students. Several of our modules are shared by all four of our MSc psychology programmes. We also know it’s vital that you develop the advanced specialised skills you will need to pursue careers in your chosen fields. Throughout your MSc degree you are supported and encouraged to focus your work to help you conduct in-depth explorations of your specialist subjects and personal interests.

You will undertake a double weighted Advanced Study module in Cognitive Psychology (30 credits).

The module develops students' knowledge and critical understanding of classic and developing areas of cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience. Indicative topics include attention, executive functioning, memory (short- and long-term), false memory, cognitive neuropsychology, cognitive ageing, face and object perception, emotion contagion, neuroimaging, psychobiology, and metacognition.

All MSc Psychology undertake the following core modules designed to help you engage with the pluralistic nature of psychology and understand the broader field within which your specialised interest sits:

  • Contemporary Research in Psychology (15 credits)
  • Advanced Research Skills and Design (15 credits)

Projects within cognitive psychology span a wide range of topics including, but not limited to, attention, visual perception of faces, effects of alcohol on cognitive performance, changes in memory due to ageing, analysis of EEG and eyetracking data, and studies of neuropsychological deficits in brain injured patients. Our expert staff and specialist facilities can support a range of projects across the field.

Teaching & Assessment

The course is of one year duration for full time and two years for part-time.

The course is assessed through written coursework, unseen examination, verbal presentation of research, and independent research written up as a dissertation.

Additional Costs

Apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for this postgraduate programme. Limited support is available for research-related expenses.
