COURSE SUMMARY

Are you new to property or looking to pursue a career in the field? If so, then this course was developed with you in mind. The programme of study will equip you with an excellent working knowledge of the commercial property market, including its relevance to national and international financial and  investment  markets.

This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to develop a successful career in the corporate property industry. You will become professionally competent in applying advanced investment and appraisal techniques, and learn how to make sound property management decisions that take  into  account  legal, economic, facilities management and planning variables.

Studying this course will equip you with knowledge and expertise in the valuation and management of urban land and buildings in both public and private ownership. There is also a focus on IT and its application to the property industry, as well as the environmental considerations of real estate development  and  management.

The full Masters award is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), allowing exemption from their academic entry requirements, as well as ensuring that you will be educated to the highest industry standards.

COURSE DETAILS

By undertaking this course you will learn about:

  • The workings of the commercial property market and its relevance to national and international financial and investment markets
  • Advanced current investment and appraisal techniques
  • Legal, economic, planning, technical and facilities management factors in property management decision making
  • IT in the property industry
  • Environmental considerations of real estate development and management

COURSE STRUCTURE

This course can be studied full-time on campus or part-time by distance learning. Admission onto the course is in September or January.

The Masters award consists of four taught modules followed by a dissertation. The PgDip requires the completion of the four taught modules and the Pg Cert requires the completion of two taught modules. All modules are delivered over a 15 week period within one semester and are assessed through coursework,  there  are no exams. 

FOR THE FULL-TIME STUDY OPTION:

You will study two 30 credit taught modules in each of your first two semesters on campus, these are designed to give you the core knowledge required for real estate and property management. In the final semester you will undertake a dissertation worth 60 credits.

DISTANCE LEARNING STUDY OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE IN FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME MODES:

For students who study distance learning at full-time mode, two 30 credit taught modules are studied per semester. You will undertake a dissertation worth 60 credits at the final semester.

For the students who study distance learning at part-time mode, one 30 credit taught module is studied per semester. You will undertake a dissertation worth 60 credits at the final two semesters.

Assessment of these modules is driven by real-world issues aligned to your workplace and job role. Teaching is based around a virtual learning environment supported by interactive online sessions. The dissertation module is also delivered online and incorporates extensive tutor engagement and support.

TEACHING

On-campus study comprises lectures, tutorials and project work.

Lectures introduce the core knowledge for each module. Tutorials provide a forum for discussion and debate with personalised instruction from tutors and project work is your chance to use research and other techniques to develop solutions to prescribed tasks. Throughout the course, experts from various fields are invited to deliver guest lectures and field trips are organised to give you an insight into the workings of the industry.

If you’re studying via distance learning, you’ll enjoy access to an internet-based learning environment backed up by intensive tutor support. Weekly online tutorials are led by tutors and encourage student interaction. Our online repository of learning material enables you to undertake self-directed study at your own convenience. Learning is driven by real-world problems with application to your workplace and job role.

ASSESSMENT

You will be assessed through written coursework (100%) and continuous informal assessment by your tutors.

Land Economy and Rural Surveying is very employable internationally, and it is an essential discipline in which you can contribute to the built environment covering anything from towns, cities, roads, transport systems and leisure venues. Our philosophy is to base our teaching on real-world issues in facilities management (FM) at high-performing organisations in both the private and public sectors. Our students develop the ability to think critically about all facets of the FM services - maintenance, engineering, projects, catering, cleaning, security and property management, by considering engineering and management theories and concepts and their applications to FM situations in these service lines. This allows our students to use their experience to explore these applications in their current or future careers.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of six core modules (90 credits), two optional modules (30 credits) and an original dissertation (60 credits).

The majority of graduates are engaged at a senior level in facility management operations, consultancy or design. Some students use the MSc as a foundation for subsequent MPhil/PhD research. The programme has helped participants to improve career prospects and keep ahead of developments in this field.

The Graduate Diploma of Valuation and Property Development is designed to prepare students with a strong knowledge base and technical skills for careers within property related industries and professions. Strongly interdisciplinary, the Master of Science in Management of Built Environment aims at preparing experts in the field of maintenance and adaptation over time of buildings, from an engineering/architectural (maintenance and requalification) and an economic (valorization and maintenance of property values over time) perspectives. Multidisciplinary knowledge and skills in the field of technical and economic appraisal for the designing and requalification of existing buildings are developed. The teaching regards a large set of courses in different disciplines, such as building technology and construction, production and management engineering, architecture, strongly rooted in the European and Italian tradition which created cities and buildings celebrated worldwide. Facilities Management (FM) is one of the fastest growing professions within the UK providing a holistic, integrated approach to the delivery and management of property and associated support services; enabling both the organisation and individual to pro-actively and effectively manage assets, contents and components for the benefit of the users.

Course Overview

The course offers a stimulating part-time pathway, allowing flexibility for individuals with responsibilities and commitments, to progress to Master’s level within the field of: Facilities, Property and Asset Management. The programme is modular, containing both core and elective options within Part One and a Dissertation; generally work related, in Part Two. The latter is often completed remotely but with full workplace support being provided by an experienced supervision team and specialist University support staff.

This is the only post-graduate F.M. related qualification offered within an educational establishment in Wales and the south-west of England. The programme is eminently suited to those working within or aspiring towards a senior management position, addresses cutting edge, strategic and operational issues that impact upon estates, property, facilities and corporate business services. The current mode of attendance for Part One occurs at the Mount Pleasant campus in Swansea, generally taking place on a Wednesday afternoon, between 2.00pm and 8.00pm.

Existing and past students have entered the programme from a range of specialist discipline areas, including engineering, building services, surveying, hotel services, general business administration, hard and soft F.M. property, project management, town planning, health-care etc. Their employers have included international PLCs, central government, local authorities, professional practices, Universities, Further Education colleges, Housing Associations, outsourced F.M. organisations, Welsh Government Agencies etc.

One year university-based study blocks

This course contains four modules that must be completed to achieve the Postgraduate Certificate and the BIFM Level 7 Diploma. On successul completion of these four modules, you may wish to consider transferring to the Executive MBA in Facilities Management (the modules represent the first year of the Executive MBA).

Each module involves a three-day study block and self-managed study time.

This flexible attendance means that the course has minimal impact on your work or personal time and you can be based anywhere in the UK or overseas.

This course looks at the key services that make up a modern facilities management operation ranging from interior design, landscaping and courtesy services to the more traditional property related services concerned with the upkeep of facilities. The course provides a theoretical basis for service procurement; the selection of service providers; and risk management models. It considers the organisational, human and cultural impact of facilities and ways in which improved services can affect facility performance. Within the course, ongoing performance measurement systems are also described which enable the effective management of service contracts.

•Space Planning and Management - mandatory
This course provides a strategic overview of space from a business perspective. It identifies the supply and demand process in relation to property portfolios and considers tools and techniques that enable the effective modelling and use of space. It examines the concept of flexibility and reuse in the context of a changing organisational context. Alternative space strategies are examined in the course in tandem with new ways of working. It also considers how space can be used to support work-life balance strategies in organisations.

•Asset Maintenance Management - mandatory
This course examines the effective management and maintenance of operational property. Key aspects include: maintenance policy and standards; planned and responsive maintenance; asset appraisal and evaluation; information management; maintenance; property portfolios; acquisitions and disposals.

•Contracts & Procurement - mandatory
This course considers facilities management in the broader context of the construction cycle. The advent of new procurement methods such as the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) have inevitably drawn facilities managers into the larger issue of construction projects and their procurement, This course considers procurement arrangement options, principles of contract law, procurement through Public Private Partnerships, construction contracts, negotiation, as well as conflicts and disputes. Facilities managers have an ever increasing contribution to make in this process in the capacity of informed client.

•Sustainable Practices in Facilities Management - mandatory
This course examines a number of key issues in facilities management which are rapidly gaining significance within the industry. The purpose of the course is to familiarise the facilities manager with contemporary issues in facilities management and the relevant guidelines, assessment procedures, and standards for sustainable and strategic facilities issues. Key issues covered include: sustainability, energy management, waste management, the working environment, and comfort and productivity in the workplace.

Intensive mode delivery

Intensive Mode Delivery is a compact and time efficient way to complete a postgraduate qualification with minimal impact on professional and personal lifestyles. Each subject is delivered over two weekends during the semester. There are two sets of three-day sessions per subject, scheduled Thursday to Saturday (approximately six to eight contact hours per day) with a break of four or five weeks between session one and session two of each subject.

Participants will receive 40 hours of combined lectures, discussion groups, case studies and workshops during contact hours. International students are required to be on campus every week.
