About the program

The combined Masters degree in Valuation and Property Development and Project Management enables students interested in being a development manager to gain specialised knowledge related to property investment and development. Development managers require project management skills to ensure that complex new initiatives are implemented as intended. It is also an international endeavour, where property development and urban renewal is relentless. Therefore, a combined understanding of the property investment process together with the generic principles of successful management of scope, time, cost, risk, human resources, quality, procurement, stakeholders and environmental impact, and their balanced integration, is most valuable. Development managers must know how to assess risks, and take them where appropriate, and may be involved in commercial, residential, industrial and civil developments, often involving large-scale projects. Students graduate with a Master of Valuation and Property Development and a Master of Project Management upon completion.Graduates of this degree are internationally recognised by the Project Management Institute (PMI).

COURSE SUMMARY

Are you new to property or looking to pursue a career in the field? If so, then this course was developed with you in mind. The programme of study will equip you with an excellent working knowledge of the commercial property market, including its relevance to national and international financial and  investment  markets.

This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to develop a successful career in the corporate property industry. The full Masters award is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), allowing exemption from their academic entry requirements, as well as ensuring that you will be educated to the highest industry standards.

COURSE STRUCTURE

This course can be studied full-time on campus or part-time by distance learning. Admission onto the course is in September or January.

The Masters award consists of four taught modules followed by a dissertation. The PgDip requires the completion of the four taught modules and the Pg Cert requires the completion of two taught modules. All modules are delivered over a 15 week period within one semester and are assessed through coursework,  there  are no exams. 

FOR THE FULL-TIME STUDY OPTION:

You will study two 30 credit taught modules in each of your first two semesters on campus, these are designed to give you the core knowledge required for real estate and property management. In the final semester you will undertake a dissertation worth 60 credits.

DISTANCE LEARNING STUDY OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE IN FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME MODES:

For students who study distance learning at full-time mode, two 30 credit taught modules are studied per semester. You will undertake a dissertation worth 60 credits at the final semester.

For the students who study distance learning at part-time mode, one 30 credit taught module is studied per semester. You will undertake a dissertation worth 60 credits at the final two semesters.

Assessment of these modules is driven by real-world issues aligned to your workplace and job role. Teaching is based around a virtual learning environment supported by interactive online sessions. The dissertation module is also delivered online and incorporates extensive tutor engagement and support.

TEACHING

On-campus study comprises lectures, tutorials and project work.

Lectures introduce the core knowledge for each module. Tutorials provide a forum for discussion and debate with personalised instruction from tutors and project work is your chance to use research and other techniques to develop solutions to prescribed tasks. Throughout the course, experts from various fields are invited to deliver guest lectures and field trips are organised to give you an insight into the workings of the industry.

If you’re studying via distance learning, you’ll enjoy access to an internet-based learning environment backed up by intensive tutor support. Weekly online tutorials are led by tutors and encourage student interaction. Our online repository of learning material enables you to undertake self-directed study at your own convenience. Intensive mode delivery

Further, the program is also delivered in intensive mode. Intensive Mode Delivery is a compact and time efficient way to complete a postgraduate qualification with minimal impact on professional and personal lifestyles. This personal research project of 12,000 to 14,000 words is usually linked to an aspect of real estate that has a specific professional application or is of personal interest to you.

The student on this course obtaining the highest mark for an investment-related dissertation may be eligible (depending on grade obtained) for a prize from the IPF worth £500.

Format

Our experienced academics are also accomplished professionals with many years in professional practice or research roles. Their knowledge and experience feeds straight into the course content, along with the latest academic and business developments.

Teaching methods vary depending on the module, but all modules comprise lectures, project work and tutorials.

Assessment

We assess your work through a variety of coursework assignments, including essays, reports, surveys and presentations. We also encourage you to do 'formative work' to prepare for assessment. This does not count towards final marks, but the feedback you receive helps improve your performance.

Market report and case study analysis:

Students on our Real Estate course can choose to study International Real Estate and Construction as an optional module. For this complex module students need to go on a study visit to an international city which has an emerging real estate and construction market.

Past students have gone abroad to take in either Dubai in the United Arab Emirates or Shanghai in the People's Republic of China. The field trip includes visits to real estate companies and construction firms, site visits and meetings with various professionals. From these briefings, students need to produce a country report that includes a detailed strategy including how they could break through in the real estate or construction market in these overseas destinations.

Valuation and Property Development graduates are recognised by the Australian Property Institute (API). Whatever your background, this course, which is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), will equip you with the knowledge to become a competent and resourceful professional, ready to go straight into a career as a Surveyor in the fast-paced property market.

There is some £680 billion invested in UK commercial property stock and just over half of this is held as investment assets. Within the residential sector, the private rented sector alone has a value of £840 billion. These real estate assets all require on-going strategic and active management.

Real Estate investment is a global trend and as such there are opportunities to work across the world, particularly within the multinational practices.

You will develop your ability to analyse, assess and synthesise solutions to problems and gain an understanding of the business drivers and constraints that influence these solutions. Your communication skills will also be developed, giving you the confidence you need to interact with clients and fellow industry professionals.

Our accreditation means this qualification meets their academic requirements, putting you well on your way to Chartered status. You can obtain full Chartered status following a period of work experience after graduation and on successful completion of the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC).

Based over one year, the course will involve lectures, tutorials and independent study. Students will undertake three taught modules in Trimesters 1 and 2 of the academic year, and complete their dissertation in the final trimester.

Students can start the course in September or January (January starts will complete in 18 months rather than one year due to the summer break between the teaching trimesters for the course). This course can also be studied part time and by distance learning.

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time in one of the many companies/industries with which we have close links. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to find and secure a suitable position but ultimately we are in the hands of the employers who are free to decide who they take into their organisation.

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Architecture and Built Environment Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Please note that this option may require you to obtain a visa for study in the other country.

You will also have the opportunity to network with industry professionals through organisations such as the RICS Matrics who run networking events for students and recently qualified and graduate surveyors.

The Advanced Practice semester will help you develop a track record of achievement that will help you stand out from other job applicants.
