This module focuses on introducing students to the various areas of law and issues of professional practice used and applied in the construction and property industries.

- Construction and planning
A module to provide a broad and critical perspective on planning and construction as well as an understanding of the context within which planning and construction decisions are made and implemented.

- Valuations
This module is intended to allow the theoretical knowledge gained in a series of lectures and workshops to be applied in practice. The module will consider the fundamental principles of valuation, valuation formulae and discounted cash flows. It will examine the methods used in the valuation of office, retail, industrial and residential properties.

This module further develops the concepts and techniques covered in the Valuations unit. - Real estate economics and finance
This module provides an introduction into a set of theoretical principles and practical skills in economics and finance, which enable property professionals to develop, manage and grow successful businesses.

- Applied valuation and the management of property interests
This module gives a practical insight into managing property. The roles and responsibilities of both landlords and tenants are considered in property management. Financial calculations that inform the decision-making processes in property management are also covered.

- Corporate real estate management
A module to provide a critical understanding of the role that real estate plays in the successful organisation of business activities, and to provide the skills to formulate appropriate strategies for corporate occupiers.

- Property investment appraisal
A module to provide a detailed and critical perspective on property investment and an understanding of the context, in which, investment decisions are made and implemented. - Dissertation

For the MSc, students undertake eight taught courses plus the research dissertation. Students on the Diploma programme take eight taught courses. This personal research project of 12,000 to 14,000 words is usually linked to an aspect of real estate that has a specific professional application or is of personal interest to you.

The student on this course obtaining the highest mark for an investment-related dissertation may be eligible (depending on grade obtained) for a prize from the IPF worth £500.

Format

Our experienced academics are also accomplished professionals with many years in professional practice or research roles. Their knowledge and experience feeds straight into the course content, along with the latest academic and business developments.

Teaching methods vary depending on the module, but all modules comprise lectures, project work and tutorials.

Assessment

Our surveyors look at financing a project, procuring construction work, financial management and the entire construction process. We want our students to have 'real world' experiences while studying at LSBU, of field work is a major component. We create these situations by inviting guest speaks in to give up-to-date lectures, having great industry links and taking our students into situations where they would like to work. Most of our surveying and construction courses give our students the opportunity to carry out a construction project. Their work will take into account current construction technologies, energy efficiency solutions and environmental and sustainability issues. The project is very detailed and is carried out across site visits, analysing on-going construction projects and an appraisal of eco-technologies. These factors can be influenced by a construction's location so our field trips can take our students both overseas to expanding countries like Dubai or round the corner to building developments happening on our own campus.

Whatever your background, this course, which is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), will equip you with the knowledge to become a competent and resourceful professional, ready to go straight into a career as a Surveyor in the fast-paced property market.

There is some £680 billion invested in UK commercial property stock and just over half of this is held as investment assets. Within the residential sector, the private rented sector alone has a value of £840 billion. These real estate assets all require on-going strategic and active management.

Real Estate investment is a global trend and as such there are opportunities to work across the world, particularly within the multinational practices.

You will develop your ability to analyse, assess and synthesise solutions to problems and gain an understanding of the business drivers and constraints that influence these solutions. Your communication skills will also be developed, giving you the confidence you need to interact with clients and fellow industry professionals.

Our accreditation means this qualification meets their academic requirements, putting you well on your way to Chartered status. You can obtain full Chartered status following a period of work experience after graduation and on successful completion of the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC).

You are mainly taught online, but please note you're required to attend a one-week block of teaching at UWE Bristol during your second year. On this commercially orientated course you will network with industry contacts and learn from sector experts through live projects and field trips. You will benefit from the professional knowledge and experience of RICS chartered lecturers as you develop the skills to acquire, develop, manage, value and dispose of property and land for clients across the globe.

In the second year, for one semester, you’ll undertake an internship, study in another country or join a research group. This valuable experience will enhance your employability and further develop your theoretical and practical skills.

Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time in one of the many companies/industries with which we have close links. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to find and secure a suitable position but ultimately we are in the hands of the employers who are free to decide who they take into their organisation.

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Architecture and Built Environment Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Please note that this option may require you to obtain a visa for study in the other country.

This course is designed for law graduates, practising lawyers and business professionals from anywhere in the world who want to develop a specialist legal and commercial expertise in technology and IP law.

Course detail

You will study the most important components of international intellectual property law such as copyright, patents and trademarks and how these forms of intellectual property are protected in the digital age.

The course is therefore designed for law graduates, practising lawyers and business professionals from anywhere in the world who wish to develop a specialist legal and commercial expertise in intellectual property law and technology. In addition to specialised courses, they will also study international commercial law and other subjects, which will help put intellectual property into the context of modern international business relations.

Format

The course is taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, small group sessions, practical experience and workshops. We teach two modules each week, over four hours of teaching time. In addition, students will complete a 15,000 word dissertation, which will be supported by a Research Methodology module.

Assessment

The taught modules adopt a standardised and consistent approach. In each of these modules, there will be a formative assessment, which will not count towards your final module mark. Following this, there will be two assessments – a piece of coursework of 3,000 words and an end of semester (pre-release) exam. Both will count towards your final mark. Normally, you will receive feedback within two weeks of submitting coursework and within three weeks of sitting exams.

Our aim is to produce graduates who have employment prospects with multinational corporations, because they understand the legal regulations and constraints of international business, as well as the financial world of international trade agencies and multinational corporations.

You can seek employment opportunities in careers with investment, law, consultancy and accounting firms, especially those focusing on international practice. Practising legal professionals and human resource professionals can use their qualification and the skills and knowledge they have gained on the course to progress in their chosen field.

On completing this course successfully, you can choose to continue your studies with Ealing Law School and progress on to a PhD.

Real estate is a fast paced industry where you’ll be expected to use your decision-making, problem solving and negotiation skills to ensure the smooth running of properties on behalf of corporations, SMEs and owners of private residences.

On this commercially orientated course you will network with industry contacts and learn from sector experts through live projects and field trips. You will benefit from the professional knowledge and experience of RICS chartered lecturers as you develop the skills to acquire, develop, manage, value and dispose of property and land in the UK and further afield.

In the second year, for one semester, you’ll undertake an internship, study in another country or join a research group. This valuable experience will enhance your employability and further develop your theoretical and practical skills.

Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time in one of the many companies/industries with which we have close links. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to find and secure a suitable position but ultimately we are in the hands of the employers who are free to decide who they take into their organisation.

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Architecture and Built Environment Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Please note that this option may require you to obtain a visa for study in the other country.

Teaching And Assessment

Designed to incorporate theoretical learning into practical scenarios wherever possible, this postgraduate degree develops the skills you will need to succeed in the rapidly evolving property market. You will have many opportunities to engage with industry through project work, real world case studies, study visits, problem solving tasks, plus an opportunity to spend time away from the University on study visits both in the UK and in Europe..

Commercially focused modules cover the key concepts in real estate. They include planning and development, property valuation, investment, management, sustainability and legal processes. Some modules are assessed via traditional assignments and project reports, but where appropriate we use methods relevant to industry such as presentations, report-writing and mock client meetings. The course culminates in a 20,000 word dissertation in a related specialist area of your choice. There are no examinations for this course.

The Advanced Practice semester will be assessed via a report and presentation about your internship, study abroad or research group activities.
