This course is intended for non-surveying graduates working, or intending to work, in property development and related fields for public authorities, commercial organisations, property or construction companies, and private practice firms.

This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills enabling you to offer specialist advice in the field of property development. On completion you'll be able to offer a broad range of expertise, harnessing your first discipline with the theories, practices and techniques of the planning and development surveyor.

Extensive use is made of outside speakers many of whom are drawn from our own alumni; some of whom have successfully established their own property development companies.

- Institutional and legal context for property
This module focuses on introducing students to the various areas of law and issues of professional practice used and applied in the construction and property industries.

- Construction and planning
A module to provide a broad and critical perspective on planning and construction, as well as an understanding of the context within which planning and construction decisions are made and implemented.

- Valuations
This module is intended to allow the theoretical knowledge gained in a series of lectures and workshops to be applied in practice. The module will consider the fundamental principles of valuation, valuation formula and discounted cash flows. It will examine the methods used in the valuation of office, retail, industrial and residential properties. The module will also introduce the process of development and redevelopment of property.

- Applied valuations and the management of property interests
This module gives a practical insight into managing property. The roles and responsibilities of both landlords and tenants are considered in property management. Financial calculations that inform property management decisions are also considered.

- Economics for property professionals
This module provides an introduction into a set of theoretical and practical principles that enable property professionals to develop, manage and grow successful businesses.

- Property development process
This module provides a broad and critical perspective on property development and an understanding of the context within which property development decisions are made and implemented.

- Project finance
This module provides the necessary skills and knowledge for project funding, project evaluation and management in the property industry.

- Planning law and practice
This module examines the history of planning and the evolution of the theories, ideas and practices that have underpinned its attempts to intervene in the natural and built environment.

- Dissertation
The module provides the opportunity for students to undertake an independent piece of research, investigating in depth a subject, in which, they have a particular interest and of their own selection. Each student will submit a dissertation of between 15,000- 20,000 words. The module includes teaching of research methods.

The module develops a comprehensive understanding of the decision-making process in any real estate decision and it transition mechanism to market prices.

- Building control
The module focuses upon the control and enforcement of the Building Regulations and associated legislation, along with supporting technical documents and alternative solutions, to meet specific regulative requirements as they apply to various building schemes.

- Building information modelling and collaborative working
A module to provide a general understanding of the role that BIM can play throughout the design, construction and operation of building assets. It looks to identify and develop the necessary managerial, technical and interpersonal skills required to deliver better value through a collaborative BIM approach.

- Health and safety management in construction
This module focuses on the management of safety on site – a process that can be applied to a wide range of work settings and project types.

- History of architecture and construction
This module examines the inter-relationship between building design and production as it occurred throughout historical time. Particular attention will be paid to those periods in history when major transformations occurred in architectural style and the building process. Other historical themes will also be pursued.

- International real estate and construction
This module introduces students to the international context of real estate markets, construction industry and project development. It specifically focuses on the activity of international real estate investors and large construction companies. The module also provides students a comparative perspective on real estate markets and construction process.

- Legal resolution of property and construction disputes
This module focuses on the range of dispute resolution techniques used by construction and property professionals to resolve and manage disputes in the construction and property industries.

On completion of the course you will be able to offer a broad range of expertise, harnessing your first discipline with the theories, practices and techniques of the planning and development surveyor.

Intellectual Property Law has become an interdisciplinary field comprised of law, engineering, medical science, economics, and numerous other fields. The MSc in Management of Intellectual Property explores the foundations of this area of law with relation to patents, trade marks and the other core areas within this field.

This Masters of Science is primarily aimed at science and engineering graduates who wish to pursue a career as patent or trade mark attorneys, though it is also open to graduates from all academic backgrounds who wish to study Intellectual Property (IP) at postgraduate level.

There is continued need for expertise in intellectual property law and management in industry, commerce and the innovative and creative industries, and this MSc gives you the opportunity to study IP to a high level. The programme offers a professional stream (for science and technology graduates), and a business stream, available to graduates from all fields looking to expand their knowledge of the application and management of IP.

Professional stream
The professional stream is directed towards graduates (primarily sciences and other technical industries, but also from all other backgrounds) seeking qualification as patent and trade mark attorneys.

Business stream
Students on the business stream will gain profound knowledge of the law and its operation with a view to working in areas such as the press and media, the entertainment industry, the internet and software industries, or the luxury goods industries. Further sectors where knowledge in Intellectual Property and related areas is seen as a particular advantage include governments, international organisations, universities or non-governmental institutions.

This programme will:
◦Give you a choice of two streams to suit your background; a professional stream for science and engineering graduates, and a business stream for graduates of other disciplines.
◦Offer science and engineering graduates the opportunity to gain professional exemptions from Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) and Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (ITMA).

What is Intellectual Property (IP) law?

Intellectual Property Law has become an interdisciplinary field comprising law, engineering, medical science, economics, and numerous other fields. This programme teaches the foundations of this area of law with relation to patents, trademarks and the other core areas within this field.

Why study Intellectual Property law?

The MSc Management of Intellectual Property programme was developed as we recognised the increasingly important role of intellectual property in our modern economy. There is an emerging need in industry, in commerce and in those professions concerned with intellectual property law, for science and technology graduates who have studied intellectual property law to a high level. In industry, particularly in small and medium-sized firms involved in research and development, where there is no in-house lawyer or patent agent, there is often a need for an intermediary between the firms and the external lawyer or patent agent for example; or for an executive to handle the inward or outward licensing of technology, to negotiate research and development contracts (where ownership of intellectual property is usually central to the bargaining) or generally to have a basic knowledge of current developments in the field of business law (eg. contract law, product liability law) insofar as these may relate to the firm's present or future activities.

With the introduction of the new business stream we also offer a distinct avenue for graduates from all backgrounds to gain valuable knowledge of intellectual property.

Structure of the MSc in Management of Intellectual Property

Classes usually commence mid-September with examinations in May/June. Courses are taught during the day at Queen Mary University of London campuses and usually take place between 9.00am and 5.00pm.

There is an initial Basic English Law examination which takes place two weeks after the start of the programme. Students then select which stream they wish to undertake.

Compulsory modules:

◦Study project (45 credits)
◦Basic principles of English law, evidence and practice (non-credit bearing but all students must pass this module at the start of the programme)

All students require 180 credits in total.

Professional stream students have core modules plus one free choice half module of 22.5 credits. In addition to this, professional stream students also sit two additional papers to gain exemption from the foundation papers of CIPA and ITMA, both papers must be passed to gain the exemption for either institution.

Business stream students have a free choice of 135 credits (three full modules or six half modules, or a combination of the two.)

All students are required to study the core subject units: Patent law, Copyright and designs law, Law of trade marks and unfair competition, Competition law, and Basic principles of English law, evidence and practice in term one. Occasional additional second semester options may be available.

- Market report and case study analysis
Students on our Real Estate course can choose to study International Real Estate and Construction as an optional module. For this complex module students need to go on a study visit to an international city which has an emerging real estate and construction market.

Past students have gone abroad to take in either Dubai in the United Arab Emirates or Shanghai in the People's Republic of China. The field trip includes visits to real estate companies and construction firms, site visits and meetings with various professionals. From these briefings, students need to produce a country report that includes a detailed strategy including how they could break through in the real estate or construction market in these overseas destinations.

This programme aims to promote advanced knowledge and understanding of intellectual property law within international, European and domestic settings.

The core subjects of the programme are intended to equip students with both an advanced knowledge of substantive intellectual property law and of the place and role of intellectual property within a domestic, regional and international context, laying a foundation for a specialised dissertation.

The programme spans comparative study of the laws of patents, copyright, trademarks, designs, database protection, breach of confidence, passing off and related sui generis rights, as well as investigating a range of issues which underpin contemporary intellectual property law.

The programme allows students to explore intellectual property law not just in its legal but also social, ethical, cultural and commercial contexts.

Programme structure

This programme offers a range of courses from the field of intellectual property with an international perspective, giving you the option to tailor the programme to suit your needs and interests.

The programme structure for 2017/18 is currently being finalised. You will take a total of 120 credits in taught courses, 60 in each semester, which may include the following:

The LLM in Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice requires commitment to study throughout one calendar year. The Department of Shipping and Trade Law offers its students dedicated resources, including IT facilities and teaching rooms. Modules

The LLM in Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice degree is modular, with students required to accumulate 180 credits to graduate. In appropriate circumstances, a student of LLM in Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice may graduate with a merit or distinction. Each programme is divided into two parts: Part I consists of 4 taught modules each weighted at 30 credits. Students undertaking an LLM in Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice are required to take four modules from the following list. It is compulsory for students on the LLM Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice to study Law of Intellectual Assets Management and Transactions. The Department also enjoys close links with law firms. For example, Associate Professor Andrew Beale OBE is a consultant with Capital Law and offers legal advice on IP matters. The Swansea LLM is well known internationally. Many of our graduates secure employment shortly after completing their degrees. The programme covers all the major IP rights, including copyright, designs, trade marks, and patents as well as confidentiality, passing off, database rights and other IP protection.

The programme also addresses global policy-making and the framework of international treaties that govern intellectual property law, as well as consideration of IP rights in their social, cultural and commercial contexts.

This is an intensive course which develops a sound practitioner’s foundation in UK and overseas intellectual property law and practice. Students will attain understanding of the law of patents, trademarks, copyright and industrial designs and its application in various professional sectors.

Focusing on intellectual property registration and prosecution, the course explores both contentious and non-contentious matters and develops the intellectual and practical skills necessary for those wishing to join the exciting and competitive professions of patent, trademark attorneys, intellectual property litigators and lawyers specialising in intellectual property.
This course provides a thorough grounding in intellectual property law, a rapidly-expanding area. Upon successful completion of the Intellectual Property PG Cert, students who wish to qualify as patent or/and trademark attorneys receive full exemption from all foundation qualifying examinations set by the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and the Joint Examination Board and from three out of four elements of the Law Course recently set by Institute of Trademark Attorneys to supersede the previous Trade Mark Foundation papers.

The postgraduate programmes offered within the Law School are usually taught in seminar format. Students on the Diploma and LLM programmes study three modules in each of the autumn and spring terms. The modules normally are assessed by a 4-5,000-word essay. Students undertaking an LLM degree must write a dissertation of 15-20,000 words.

This programme is designed to equip students with a comprehensive and specialist education in a range of areas within International Intellectual Property Law. The course will enable students to master the basic principles of the four main ‘pillars’ of IP Law, namely, Copyright, Patents, Trade marks and Industrial Designs. The four main components of IP Law will be examined from three distinct perspectives: domestic (UK), EU and International (global treaties/conventions) and will encompass analysis of legislation, case law (common law and civil law) and specific legal concepts. Where possible, comparative analysis will be carried out as between for example, specific EU IP Law developments and those of third country States e.g. India, Pakistan and China. In addition, certain third countries with well-developed, mature IP systems (e.g. the U.S., Canada and Australia) will be examined for a comparative assessment. The distinct themes of how the Internet has brought about new thinking in the IP world and, possible overlapping forms of IP protection (e.g. copyright and patent protection of computer software) will be examined.

Through carefully designed course work and varied teaching approaches, students from both a common law and civil law background will acquire the intellectual open-ness, technical expertise and critical thinking abilities that are necessary for effectiveness in a globalising world. The programme will equip students to respond effectively to the wide range of intellectual and professional challenges facing contemporary intellectual property lawyers. The LLM in International Intellectual Property Law will equip them to deal with both case work and policy making.

Employment opportunities for graduates of the programme will include work with international law firms, patent and trade mark attorneys, local Intellectual Property Offices (e.g. the UK Intellectual Property Office, Chinese Patent and Trade Mark Office and the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks in India),international organisations such as the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the United Nations and specialist bodies within the EU e.g. the Office for the Harmonisation of the Internal Market (OHIM) and the European Patent Office (EPO). Assessment

We'll assess you with a variety of learning and assessment methods, including written assessments, both formative and summative, including essays, position papers, opinions, analysis', presentation and reports and a portfolio. You may also take some exams.

Property Finance is a well-established area of essential expertise within the real estate industry for the purchase and development of properties which may have varying levels of complexity. The finance specialist utilises modern skills, techniques and systems to successfully source and provide an adequate flow of accessible funds to buy, sell and develop land and buildings.

This course is intended to give you a detailed understanding of property finance and the associated property appraisal techniques and processes, encompassing both legal and social aspects. You will analyse investment and development finance situations and respond to particular financial problems with derived solutions. You will also be able to appraise options and independently evaluate alternative courses of action.

The design of the course recognises the significant challenges of providing an educational experience that is practical, relevant and challenging.
