The MSc in Planning Major Projects responds to these needs and delivers a course that develops advanced skills and knowledge associated with the planning, design, appraisal and delivery of large scale projects.

Course detail

The course is suitable for graduates looking to specialise in the major projects sector, particularly those from spatial planning degrees. It is also suitable for planning professionals who currently work in, or are looking to branch into, the sector. The breadth of the course also makes it suitable for graduates from other degree paths and will provide opportunities for individual interests to be pursued (for example: from the application of good design to environmental protection).

Some of the modules will be offered individually as units of CPD which will be beneficial for people in related areas who have a need to understand the field more fully, such as marketing professionals and environmental assessors.

Format

This Masters degree will adopt a mixed approach to learning and will comprise of both taught and distance learning elements. There will be a strong emphasis on project work, with much of this being based in the Bristol region, using live briefs where possible.

Throughout the course you will be encouraged to collaborate with a range of students to share ideas and practices. This will be key in project work although assessment will largely be undertaken independently. Fieldwork will be an important feature of the course with opportunities to explore projects in the UK and beyond.

Assessment

Dissertation/report

All MSc students submit a 10,000-word report on a topic related to the main themes of the programme. The topic should help enhance your career development and the knowledge that is most relevant in your field. 

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of case-based learning, interviews, peer-based learning and lectures and workshops from leading practitioners, policymakers, entrepreneurs and academics. Students are required to have sufficient breadth and depth of knowledge to challenge and inform others. Assessment is primarily through written coursework and the research report.

Student work of the highest calibre is published in the SMPJournal - a collection of student thoughts and ideas developed throughout their studies on the MSc in Strategic Management of Projects. The SMPJournal is an ISSN publication and is listed in the relevant libraries Cambridge and Oxford Universities and the British Library. This will increase your credibility as a professional in the strategic management of projects. 

Fieldwork

The MSc in Management of Projects prepares students for a professional role in a wide range of projects by providing students with an understanding of both the people-related and technical requirements necessary for the successful management of projects, as well as the organisational and strategic aspects.

This MSc is one of four MSc courses within the Management of Projects Group of Programmes. The other MSc courses are: Commercial Project Management, Construction Project Management and Engineering Project Management.

The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering has a long history of delivering project management related masters courses and the staff who deliver the programme are drawn for a wide variety of backgrounds and industrial experience.

Teaching and learning

The Management of Projects MSc is a full time course which is studied over 12 months, starting in September each year. The course comprises eight taught course units, each worth 15 credits, and a research dissertation worth 60 credits. In addition, the Applied Project Management unit is course-specific unit which uses simulation exercises supplemented by guest speakers to provide students with hands-on practical experience of managing a project throughout its life cycle. Students must also select three option units and carry out a Management of Projects based dissertation.

Assessment of the taught part of the course is via a combination of formal written examinations and coursework assignments, which will include group work and oral presentations. Some assessment is based on online material provided by the Association for Project Management (APM) and PRINCE2 (a process-based method for effective project management).

Many modern projects are not only complicated (tough technical problems needing co-ordination across many suppliers) but also complex (with unclear requirements). The new Management of Complex Projects MSc has been designed to produce project managers equipped to lead the most challenging of projects.

About this degree

Students gain a systems view of project management, so they can develop effective technical solutions within a constrained commercial context. We teach students a number of guiding principles to enable them to manage complex projects and help them to develop key skills such as risk management, requirements management, conflict resolution, effective communication and leadership.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of four core taught modules (60 credits), two research modules (75 credits), two optional taught modules (30 credits) and one compulsory group project (15 credits). Modules are generally taught as intensive five-day 'block weeks' to minimise time spent away from the office for the flexible/modular students.

A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, full-time one academic year, or flexible study two to five years) is offered.

A Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits, 12 weeks or flexible study up to three years) is offered.

Group project

Students undertake a compulsory group project simulation in which they are confronted with a series of realistic project scenarios and must work together to determine and present their recommended course of action. The scenarios will build on challenges typical of complex projects such as requirements definition, risk management, scope creep and contract and conflict management.

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, case-studies, discussion sessions, workshop activity, and project work. Assessment is through a combination of course work, in class tests and written examinations. The research modules are assessed through a written report and a short presentation.

This highly successful programme offers specialist pathways in Playwriting and Dramaturgy. We concentrate on the process of writing for live performance, together with an ongoing evaluation of the work in process. Through practice and reflection, we enable you to establish a distinctive, individual approach as both a writer and dramaturge. Projects include site-specific work, writing for a specific audience, verbatim theatre and interdisciplinary collaboration.

We support the development of texts for performance, alongside intellectual understanding of the diverse forms and contexts in which live performance can be made and the writer/dramaturge’s role in this. We examine texts from a wide range of periods and cultures. We engage with work that is innovative, or which challenges established notions of practice.

Opportunities to collaborate

Dramaturgs and playwrights study side by side, and examine creative and dramaturgical issues from various perspectives as writers, spectators and creative collaborators. There are opportunities to collaborate on an Interdisciplinary Project with MA Performance Makers and composers from the Department of Music. Final project texts, performed and directed by industry professionals, are presented at the Soho Theatre in London, attended by key industry representatives. Graduates are highly successful in obtaining commissions, dramaturgy posts and artistic directorships. Recent successes include:

Modules & structure

Autumn term 

All students take the Writing Projects module: you will work on three diverse, short playwriting projects. Each addresses particular generic issues that relate to writing for live performance, and you will engage with the specific challenges and demands of differing circumstances of text development and production. These will vary from year to year, but they are likely to be selected from the following:

  • Theatre as Event – site-specific performance
  • Authenticity and Live Performance – verbatim theatre
  • Writing for Specific Audiences – children’s/young person’s theatre project
  • Creative Collaboration – multimedia collaboration with MA Performance Making and Studio Composition students from the Department of Music

You will also take the Dramaturgy module, which has two main elements: analysis of dramatic text (these will include classics and modern classics, as well as new plays); and analysis of live performance seen by the group (including some visual, environmental or non-text-based work). During the module you will assemble a portfolio of critical analyses and creative writing projects for assessment.

You will also take one contextual module alongside students from other Masters programmes, to be selected from a list of options that will vary from session to session.

Spring term 

You will develop your work on Dramaturgy with the term-long practical workshop module Creative Intervention in Text. This will examine: translation; adaptation of work from other media for live performance; and the re-writing and/or adaptation of extant plays; planning and curating seasons of performance work. You will assemble a portfolio of creative projects for assessment.

You also start work on your Final Project the personal Dissertation-equivalent project that will be the core of your work for the next six months). Weekly seminars and workshops will examine themes relevant to the range of projects chosen, and a first draft or outline will be produced. Each project will be the focus of individual tutorials, and then a class workshop led by a guest dramaturg, director or playwright as appropriate. You will then plan the next phase of the research or development of your project.

You also take another option from the list of contextual modules shared with students from other Masters programmes.

Summer term 

You will present the second draft of your project for another phase of tutorials and group workshops.

Playwriting projects will then be prepared for some form of public rehearsed reading or scratch performance, in extract form – with the writers involved in all aspects of the work.

Dramaturgy projects will be given practical support of an appropriate, equivalent kind. You will further develop your work, with tutorials and workshops and public presentation of work as appropriate, before writing and submitting the finished project.

Throughout the year, various seminars and workshops will examine diverse issues that affect writers today, and these will be led by visiting professionals as appropriate.

Assessment

We deploy a range of assessment approaches, each appropriate to the module taken. Students taking Writing Projects will submit three short playtexts for assessment. Dramaturgy is assessed by a portfolio of analytic reviews, and Creative Intervention in Text by a series of short creative writing projects and writing exercises. Each of the contextual option modules is assessed by a 4,000 word essay. Final Project leads to the production of a playtext (Playwriting), or a Dissertation or equivalent practical project (Dramaturgy). 

Careers

Numerous playwrights completing this programme receive high-level professional development opportunities, commissions, awards and full-scale productions of their work at major new writing centres in the UK, USA and in continental Europe. Many also work for at least part of the time in the fields of script development (for theatre and television), and in theatre publication.

Recent playwriting alumni include:

  • Ben Musgrave, whose Pretend You Have Big Buildings won the Bruntwood Prize (2006) and received a main house production at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester
  • Allia V Oswald, whose Dirty Water won the Alfred Fagon Award (2007) and was given a rehearsed reading at the Royal Court Theatre
  • Adam Brace, whose play Stovepipe was a High Tide Festival winner (2008), and was staged recently by the National Theatre and published by Faber

In each of these cases the award-winning play was the writer’s Final Project from this programme.

Dramaturgy alumni work in professional literary management for mainstream and fringe building-based companies, as well as on freelance script development programmes in the UK and internationally. These include:

Research projects

The central and most important part of the MRes is the two research projects that students undertake. Students choose both projects themselves in the subject areas that interest them and that will allow them to follow the career path they wish to follow. The MRes programme has a huge number of projects which students can choose from, across a wide spectrum of biomedical science.

The following are examples of the types of projects offered, to illustrate the range of subject areas.

• A gene-microarray based approach to the detection of recombinant human erythropoietin doping in endurance athletes

COURSE STRUCTURE

This course can be studied full-time on campus or part-time via distance learning. Admission onto the course is in September or January.

The Masters award consists of four taught modules followed by a dissertation. The PgDip requires the completion of the four taught modules. For the award of PgCert the completion of two specified taught modules is required. All modules are delivered over a 15 week period and are assessed mostly through coursework, there are no exams.

TEACHING

On-campus study comprises lectures, tutorials and project work.

Lectures introduce the core knowledge for each module. Tutorials provide a forum for discussion and debate with personalised instruction from tutors, and the project work is your chance to employ research and other techniques to develop solutions to prescribed tasks.

If you’re studying via distance learning, you’ll enjoy access to an internet-based learning environment backed up by intensive tutor support. Weekly online tutorials are led by tutors with student interaction. Our online repository of learning material enables you to undertake self-directed study at your own convenience. Learning is driven by real-world problems with application to your workplace and job role.

ASSESSMENT

You will be assessed through written coursework (100%) and continuous informal assessment by your tutors

Certain modules for full-time students have a small amount of assessment through presentations.

Our MRes Biological Sciences course offers a unique opportunity to experience research projects across a broad range of disciplines and laboratory environments before you start a career in research.

You will gain research experience and professional skills - perhaps in a different area to your first degree - before deciding on a future career in industry or academic research. This will allow you to make an informed choice about the research area you want to go into.

You choose two laboratory placements from a list provided by your programme director. Projects on this list come from any of our areas of research within the biological and biomedical sciences. You will cover design, construction and operation of competition vehicles, and related aspects of materials science, aerodynamics, structural analysis, vehicle systems, and management techniques related to motorsport.

Accreditation

 MSc in Advanced Motorsport Engineering is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Re-accreditation for the MSc in Advanced Motorsport Engineering is currently being sought from the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Candidates must hold a CEng accredited BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree to comply with full CEng registration requirements. 

Course details

The MSc course consists of nine one-week assessed modules, of which eight are assessed, which take place during October to February, a group design project and an individual thesis project.

Students who excel on the Masters' course have their performance recognised through prizes from our partners and associates presented either on the day of the Motorsport Group Design Presentations or at the Motorsport MSc 'Parc Ferme' Graduation event in the June of the following year.

Group project

Group design projects are usually sponsored by industry partners and provide students with experience of working on real challenges in the work place along with skills in team working, managing resources and developing reporting and presentation skills. Experience gained is highly valued by both students and prospective employers. Projects run from February to May.

The group design project forms an important element of the education and assessment process for our Masters' students. The group design project is an applied, multidisciplinary team-based activity, providing students with the opportunity to apply principles taught during their MSc course. The Presentation Day provides the students with an opportunity to present their work to an audience of industry representatives, academics and their peers.

Our group design projects have proven very successful in developing new conceptual designs which are now implemented in competition vehicles and have even influenced sporting regulations. The nature of the work is very much applied with the students accessing facilities and equipment here at Cranfield together with support from the academic team and motorsport practitioners.

2015-2016

  • Land Speed Record (LSR) motorcycle concept designs

Four student teams developed their concepts for the 500cc streamliner class. Within each team students specialised in disciplines such as CFD, aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics, powertrain, materials and structures. They created a wind tunnel model that was tested in the Cranfield facility. In addition to the technical aspects, students engaged in individual competency evaluation, peer review and personal reflection.

Each year we have a number of thesis projects with motorsport companies that are subject to Non-Disclosure Agreements. This reflects the competitive and confidential nature of motorsport. However, a number of thesis projects are in the public domain and reflect the opportunity students have to deepen their technical understanding.

The individual thesis project runs until early September. Thesis projects allow the students to deepen their understanding through research work related to motorsport.

Strathclyde's MSc in data analytics is unique by bringing together essential skills from three departments, Management Science, Mathematics & Statistics, and Computer & Information Sciences (CIS), in order to address the needs of a fast-growing industry.

This collaboration avoids the narrow interpretation of this subject offered by competitor institutions and presents significant opportunities for businesses to recruit data analytics experts with a high-level expertise and knowledge.

What you’ll study

The course will have a duration of 1 year, with two semesters of classes (120 credits in total) followed by an MSc dissertation project (60 credits) during the summer.

The class Data Analytics in Practice (20 credits) will be run over both semesters to provide you with a practical environment to apply methodological learnings from other classes into challenging projects from industry.

Semester 1

Semester 1 will additionally consist of five 10-credit core modules as listed under 'Course Content' which will provide the technical background to students. The contributions in Semester 1 will be split evenly between three departments.

This semester is designed to provide you with the fundamental technical analytics knowledge from all three departments.

  • Computer & Information Sciences courses will cover core techniques including machine learning and data mining as well as data visualisation and big data platforms
  • Mathematics courses will ensure you gain strong computational skills while establishing a broad knowledge of statistical tools essential for analytics
  • Management Science courses will build the foundations of business skills including problem structuring as well as decision analysis, in addition to providing essential practical skills

Semester 2

Semester 2 will additionally consist of a 10-credit core module as well as 40 credits worth of elective modules. To ensure breadth of knowledge, you'll be required to choose electives from at least two departments. This semester is designed to extend your core skills and provide you with opportunities through a broad range of electives to specialise in areas that you are particularly interested to excel.

The only technical core class will provide you with a thorough theoretical and practical understanding of optimisation techniques essential for data analytics, whereas each of the three departments will offer four to five elective courses, the majority of which are accessible to everyone on the course without any prerequisites. The final component of the MSc course will be a summer dissertation project, which can be completed either through a client-based project or a desk-based research project, depending on your interests. You will submit your dissertation in September to complete your degree requirements (pending any resits).

Work placement

You will have optional opportunities to complete your MSc summer dissertation projects in client-based projects, where a number of host organisations will be arranged by the department. These projects will be normally unpaid, however, all costs such as travel and accommodation will be covered by the host organisation if out of town.

Major projects

The taught modules on the programme introduce you to a variety of tools, techniques, methods and models. However, the practical reality of applying analytical methods in business is often far removed from the classroom. Working with decision-makers on real issues presents a variety of challenges.

For example, data may well be ambiguous and hard to come by, it may be far from obvious which data analytics methods can be applied and managers will need to be convinced of the business merits of any suggested solutions. While traditional teaching can alert students to such issues, understanding needs to be reinforced by experience.

This is primarily addressed by the core module ‘Data Analytics in Practice’, which takes place over both semesters. Every year, case studies and challenging projects are presented to our students by various organisations.

Learning & teaching

The aim of the MSc in data analytics is to develop graduates who can use data analytics technology, understand the statistical principles behind the technologies and understand how to apply these technologies to solve business problems.

The content combines the strength of the disciplinary excellence of each institution, exploring international development management focused on both infrastructure capacity and on social and economic development.

Aims

The course is designed to provide you with:

  • Analytical capacities, knowledge and skills necessary to propose, plan, implement, manage and evaluate development projects.
  • Enhanced competence in relevant functional areas of development management and the specialist roles of the development practitioner.

Teaching and learning

Part-time Study

Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 27 months.  There are no evening or weekend course units available on the part-time programme, therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director and seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.

Coursework and assessment

The taught elements of the programme, carrying 120 credits overall is continuously assessed by a variety of methods (project based reports, essays), involving largely individual submissions, but also elements of group work.

Participants must also complete a 12,000-15,000 word dissertation on a topic of their choice approved by the Programme Directors. Students are encouraged to base their dissertations on topics of direct professional concern to themselves.
