THE PROGRAMME

The programme of the international Seminar on European Project Planning is organized in 5 main modules:

The total duration of the course programme is 50 hours. 25 hours of classroom based learning in Florence and 25 hours of e-learning integrated with virtual meetings.

THE COORDINATOR OF THE SEMINAR

The International Seminar on European Project Planning is organized and coordinated by Pixel, an education and training institution based in Florence (Italy) having as its main aim the provision of support to internationalization and European Cooperation. Pixel successfully coordinated and managed over 75 European projects. Some of the European programmes that funded the projects in which Pixel was and is involved are: Socrates ODL; Socrates Minerva, Socrates Grundtvig, Socrates Lingua, eLearning, Leonardo da Vinci, Lifelong Learning, Justice Programme, Safer Internet Programme. Many among the European projects coordinated by Pixel were given an “Excellent” rating and identified as “Best Practice” by the European Commission.

ORGANIZATION

The European Project Planning international Seminar has a duration of 60 hours.
30 hours of classroom based learning held in Florence (Italy). The 30 hours course is organized in 6 days, Monday to Saturday, 5 hours each day.
30 hours of e-learning integrated with virtual meetings with the course tutor and the other course participants. A Forum is also available for virtual meetings among all participants.

The classroom course takes place at Pixel, in Florence, Italy.

METHODOLOGY

The approach used is highly practical, based on the expertise of the course trainers who have over 15 years of experience in planning and managing projects and initiatives funded by the European Commission, mainly in the sector of Education and Training.

A practical simulation is carried out for each topic in focus. The practical simulation is based on the use of the services, databases and documentation made available, on-line, by the European Union.
The objective of the practical activity is the simulation of the development and presentation of a European project.
At the end of the international Seminar, every work group will have produced a first draft of a European project including the application form, budget, transnational partnership etc.

FOLLOW UP

During the classroom course each participant is introduced to the e-learning course’s contents.

During the four weeks after the classroom course, 2 virtual meetings are organized between the course trainers and tutor and the course participants to further analyse and discuss the contents learnt at distance. An on line Forum is also available for all course participants to ask questions to the course trainers and share the answers with their colleagues.

The international Master in European Project Planning and Management has a total duration of 5 months (800 hours) organized as follows:

- 2 months of classroom based training and project work. The classroom based training has a duration of 8 hour a day, from 9.00 to 13.00 and from 14.00 to 18.00. The classroom based course is held in Florence (Italy). The classroom based part of the Master course is held at Pixel, in Florence (Italy).

- 3 months of internship, in public or private organizations. The intern works as an Assistant European project manager. The internship is held in one of the partner organizations based in one of the European Union’s member states.

METHODOLOGY

The approach used is highly practical, based on the expertise of the course trainers who have 15 to 25 years experience in European project planning, management, assessment and auditing.

Practical simulations are carried out for each topic analyzed. The objective of the practical activities is the simulation of the planning and management of European projects. INTERNSHIP

The Master offers the participants the opportunity to carry out a three month internship abroad in one of the European Union’s countries. The internship therefore gives the participants the opportunity to immediately put into practice the skills acquired through a direct involvement in the management of European projects.

This degree builds knowledge and skills in the planning and management of development projects and programmes. It is designed to deepen critical understanding of the strategies, processes, techniques and issues involved in taking ideas for development and turning them into practical realities with identifiable outcomes and benefits.

The Master of Planning (MPlan) degree requires two years of full-time, or the equivalent in part-time, study and entails postgraduate coursework in planning and planning-related subjects, as well as a significant piece of supervised research. There are two streams: one involving a thesis, and the other a research project. The normal admission requirement for both streams is a completed Bachelor's degree in any subject(s) relevant to planning.

A candidate's academic programme is decided at enrolment, and the research topic is determined at the end of the first year of studies. The thesis or the research project must be submitted by the end of the final year of the programme.

The MPlan is a professional qualification, and graduates are employed in local, regional and national government agencies, health boards, industry and planning consultancies in New Zealand and overseas. Some proceed to doctoral studies in preparation for employment in a university or as consultants on policy and planning.

-A candidate shall, before commencing the investigation to be described in either the planning project or the thesis, secure the approval of the Director of the Planning Programme for the topic, the supervisor(s) and the proposed course of the investigation.
-A candidate shall submit the planning project by 1 October of the year in which the coursework is completed.

It is designed to allow entry from any degree discipline and a diverse range of work backgrounds. The skills learnt are transferable to a wide variety of industries – gas, engineering, information technology, healthcare, events, public sector and logistics. The programme is also relevant to those wishing to study a generalist qualification and as such is applicable to any area of work that involves project or programme management.

The programme is designed to address the growing complexity of projects and incorporates key project management tools and techniques, as well as the core competencies required by project managers to drive projects to a successful conclusion, and include a more holistic, international and ethical stakeholder approach.

This course will support your career progression by developing your critical thinking and research skills in order to enhance your business knowledge and understanding. The MSc will teach you the theory of effective project management practice and equip you with essential skills, confidence and competence to assist you when you venture into your chosen industry. Course content

The programme encompasses project management through a series of progressive modules, developing your knowledge from the fundamentals, through to modules addressing risk, resilience and contingency planning, project finance and procurement, managing project teams, critical perspectives and social impact and responsibility.

You will have the opportunity to gain professional qualifications in Prince2 Foundation, Prince2 Practitioner and Agile Project Management Foundation.

The final stage of the programme will include a Project Management consultancy project or Project Management Dissertation. The consultancy project will allow you to undertake a project in one of a number of different industries and can address the different aspects of project or programme management. If you do not wish to take this opportunity, you will complete the Project Management Dissertation, which will allow you to explore, in depth, and critically review literature about issues related to a particular aspect of project management in your chosen area.

Methods of Learning

You will be taught by experienced academic staff with specialist knowledge of their own subject areas. Taught modules are delivered using a combination of lectures and workshop sessions, with an emphasis on participation and discussion.

For those students wishing to take up the option of a 12-month placement, the course will be 24 months in duration. For those students not wishing to take this option, then the course will be completed in 12 months.

The programme is completed by full time study on Park Campus. Normally, you will complete two semesters of 14 weeks, spending 12-15 hours per week in the classroom with your tutors and fellow students. You will be expected to engage in significant additional study, around 20-25 hours per week in self-directed study, learning and networking and attending additional workshops to support your achievement of the professional body memberships and awards. The full-time programme normally runs twice a year with September and January starts.

Assessments

You will experience a variety of assessment styles including business reports, essays, research papers, oral presentations, practical work, examinations, case study and context analysis, as well as the dissertation.

There is an opportunity to take a one year placement, which will allow you to develop and apply the necessary skills and abilities required to undertake complex business projects and reflect on your experiences.

The consultancy project will allow you to undertake a project in one of a number of different industries and can address the different aspects of project or programme management. If you do not wish to take this opportunity, you will complete the project management dissertation, which will allow you to explore, in depth, and critically review literature about issues related to a particular aspect of project management in your chosen area.

Marine Spatial Planning is a new field arising from new legislation geared to sustainable use of the marine environment. New planning procedures are being introduced and new skills are required to engage with the process. Spatial Planning determines the design of places, the relationships between land uses, and identifies infrastructure requirements. The planning process makes provision for the needs of households and the requirements of the economy, and planning aims to mitigate the adverse impacts of development upon our natural environment.

The planning system is currently undergoing change to be better able to address the challenges of competitiveness and sustainability. There is a pressing requirement in both the public and private sectors for planners with appropriate understanding and skills to plan for development and protect the environment.

The University is a long-established provider of planning education. MSc Spatial Planning will be attractive to individuals with a real interest in tackling the challenges of important urban planning issues; MSc Spatial Planning with Sustainable Urban Design is designed to equip graduates with the professional skills for resolving environmental, economic, social, cultural and spatial dimensions in designing for sustainable development.

Why choose spatial planning?

Spatial Planning is concerned with creating sustainable places. Planners achieve this in a number of ways:

Planners work with building firms and housing organisations to help make available sites addressing the housing needs of local areas. They meet with local communities to learn about their concerns and to discuss ways of tackling issues such as the protection of homes from flood risk. They provide guidance on how to promote quality in the design of places and buildings.

Planning makes possible investment in sustainable economic development. Through preparing medium and long-term plans, planners ensure that land is available for development within and around our cities and towns. Planners often lead on regeneration projects and work in partnership with engineers to bring forward the infrastructures necessary to relieve transport congestion and to provide for long-term energy solutions.

Climate change is making achieving sustainability increasingly important. Planners, work with the environmental agencies and with conservation interests to ensure that the potential environmental impacts arising from development proposals are first established and then they use planning powers to promote a sustainable balance between social and economic development and the protection of the environment.

Who becomes a planning student?

Spatial Planning is a multi-disciplinary activity and attracts a wide mix of graduates. Often these are geography graduates, but increasingly graduates with social science, law, architecture and surveying degrees, as well as graduates from the environmental sciences find that Spatial Planning makes use of their knowledge and training.

Aims of the Programme

The Spatial Planning programmes are designed to provide the knowledge, skills and understanding required for graduates wishing to enter into professional careers in urban planning and development.

Programme Content

Semester 1:
Spatial Analysis has two key components. The first component analyses built and natural environments particularly from a conservation perspective. The second part of the module focuses on socio-economic analysis of data at a city scale and the relevance of this to planning.

Statutory Planning. is a practice based approach to learning processes processes of plan-making and the management of development.Property Development Processes deals with complexities and challenges in the property development sector and the role of different stakeholders involved.

Semester 2:
Concepts of spatial planning introduces students to the role of planning and planning systems. The other part of this module introduces students to various planning theories and their relevance to practice..

Sustainability in Contemporary Cities examines various challenges facing the growth of cities globally and the implications of these to planning of cities and the countryside.

The third second semester module is optional depending on the selected specialism. Students select one specialist module from the following:

Environmental Assessment
Marine Spatial Planning
Sustainable Urban Design
Urban Conservation
Applied Geographic Information Systems and Geospatial Data Analysis

Semester 3:
A 60 credit dissertation in line with the selected specialism

Methods of Assessment

Assessment methods cover a mix of formats including 'live' project-work and a research project. There are no written examinations. The educational aims are to develop subject understanding and to equip students with research and practice skills. Assignments call for visioning, problem-solving, forward-planning and critical reflection. Assignments are informed by students making effective use of available literature, conducting investigations and accessing sources of data. Attention is paid to building the effective communication and partnering skills vital for practicing professional planners.

Project management is now a central tool across many organisations, as more and more tasks are being managed as projects. For those working in the field or looking to develop their capabilities in this area, the PGCert in Project Management covers the knowledge and techniques required to manage large, complex projects successfully across a variety of contexts. It also provides you with an opportunity to develop the soft management skills essential to effective project management and so often neglected.

You may already work full-time in the field (or for a significant part of your role) and aspire to become an Association for Project Management (APM) Registered Project Professional, or to move into a more senior position. The course is also relevant to individuals working outside of project management, who will gain significant benefit from applying the skills and techniques across other business functions.

Course detail

The course covers the fundamental concepts, processes and tools reflected in both PRINCE2® and Association for Project Management Body of Knowledge (APM BoK) 6th edition. This means that alongside the PGCert, you have the option to also gain:

• the APMP qualification from the Association for Project Management, a qualification which is recognised nationally and internationally across many different sectors and industries

• the PRINCE2® Practitioner qualification, which is supported by Government and widely recognised by recruiters as a 'must have' for many project management roles in the UK.

As well as equipping you with the technical skills to manage projects successfully, we focus a lot of our attention on strengthening the soft skills that come into play within project management everything from communication to leadership. Many of these skills are transferable and can be applied to the management of any complex business task, in particular those requiring detailed planning, prioritising and analysis.

Structure

The course is designed to give you a Postgraduate Certificate in Project Management from UWE, with the additional option to complete the PRINCE2® Practitioner and the APM Project Management Qualification (if required) alongside.

You can register for the course at any time and start the PRINCE2 learning (if you wish to do so) before the next run of the Project Management Competence module.

Additional assessment will be required for those wishing to gain the PRINCE2® Practitioner qualification and/or the APMP qualification (SCQF Level 7).

Format

If you opt to study the course online, you will have access to our full distance learning package with online materials and synchronised live sessions with your tutors via our Blackboard system. Group drop-in sessions will also run at set times throughout the year where you can meet with other course participants and discuss your progress.

Alternatively you can choose to study the course via a mix of online study units and face-to-face group sessions at our campus in Bristol to reinforce your e-learning and independent study.

On both routes, you will benefit from a range of learning methods, including e-learning, teaching based on research literature and practical experience, and peer and work-based learning. A significant emphasis is placed on drawing insight from real examples of project management work, and you will also have the opportunity to engage with the APM Body of Knowledge and academic literature on project management.

Assessment

Assessment for the Project Management Competence module takes the form of a reflective report on a project you are involved in. You will complete a 400-word proposal identifying key elements to be reviewed in your final report, and then review a project, discussing the elements identified in your proposal.

The Project Management Principles in Practice module is assessed through a work-based learning assignment, consisting of:
• a proposal containing research objectives/outcomes
• a written project (up to 8,000 words)
• a client presentation
• an informal viva with your supervisor to reflect upon your project experience.

Careers / Further study

This programme gives project management professionals the technical knowledge, skills development opportunities, and access to further professional qualifications, to be able to take their career to a senior project manager or director level.

Many participants use the course as a fast-track route onto the Association for Project Management (APM) and PRINCE2® Practitioner qualifications.

The course is also a stepping stone towards APM Registered Project Professional status for colleagues who gain the APMP qualification and have sufficient experience of managing complex projects, we can look to develop a portfolio of evidence with the self-reflection and communication skills required to support this application.

This new MSc brings a cross-disciplinary focus to transport and urban planning which is unique, aiming to foster “smart solutions” to the current critical challenges of transitioning to sustainable travel behaviours and sustainable cities in the UK and internationally. The programme draws on the latest thinking and debates in transport, urban planning and mega infrastructure project development.

Degree information

The aim of the MSc is to enable students to work effectively as transport and planning practitioners, moving beyond the ‘disciplinary silos’ usually found in academia and practice. A key feature of the MSc is its integrative design across disciplines, developing a range of different theories and perspectives, with modules linked by common principles.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of six core modules (90 credits), two optional modules (30 credits) and a dissertation/report (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, full-time nine months) is offered.

Careers

The programme is attractive to candidates who wish to work across disciplines, and at the strategic policy development levels, with urban planning, geography, transport planning or engineering graduates, or wider specialists, who see their future work in transport planning as part of the design of sustainable cities. Graduate students from The Bartlett School of Planning have been very successful in gaining subsequent employment. At present there is a growing demand for our postgraduates from a wide range of both private and public employers, within the transport planning or urban planning professions, or the nexus of strategy development and implementation.

Employability
This programme will equip students with the skills needed to work effectively as transport and planning practitioners in urban contexts in the public or third sector, for example in consultancy, central government, Transport for London (TfL), Greater London Authority (GLA), metropolitan authorities, local authorities, international investment banks, quangos and lobby groups. Potential employers also include international consultancies; we have close links and have worked with many of these companies such as Halcrow, CH2M and Arup.
