The objective of the international Seminar on European Project Management is to provide participants with the skills to plan European projects in the field of education, training and research.

The European Project Management international Seminar is addressed to individuals who wish to acquire the skills for successfully accessing and managing European funds in the field of education, culture and research. The European Project Management international Seminar aims at providing participants with the skills to enable them to:
• Manage contractual procedures with the European Commission and national agencies.
• Organize and plan the project work for a successful implementation of the project activities and for achieving the expected project’s results.

THE PROGRAMME

The programme of the international Seminar on European Project Management is organized in 5 modules:
• Module 1: Introduction to Project Management
Introduction to the planning of a European project and how the planning phase influences the management of a funded project
• Module 2: Project Management Strategies and Contractual Issues
Presentation on how to plan the project activities and analysis of the typologies of contracts to be set up for project management.
• Module 3: Partnership Management
Introduction to the strategies to organize the project partners work and to successfully manage the partnership
• Module 4: Evaluation and Dissemination
Introduction to the planning and carrying out of an effective evaluation, dissemination and sustainability strategy
• Module 5: Project Reporting and Administrative Issues
Presentation of the reporting activities and methodologies and of the administrative and financial rules for the project financial and administrative management

THE COORDINATOR OF THE SEMINAR

The International Seminar on European Project Management is organized and coordinated by Pixel, an education and training institution based in Florence (Italy) having as its main aim the provision of support to internationalization and European Cooperation. Pixel successfully coordinated and managed over 85 European projects. Some of the European programmes that funded the projects in which Pixel was and is involved are: Socrates ODL; Socrates Minerva, Socrates Grundtvig, Socrates Lingua, eLearning, Leonardo da Vinci, Lifelong Learning, Justice Programme, Safer Internet Programme. Many among the European projects coordinated by Pixel were given an “Excellent” rating and identified as “Best Practice” by the European Commission.

Pixel also coordinated and managed over 30 projects funded by the European Social Fund.

ORGANIZATION

The European Project Management international Seminar has a duration of 60 hours.
30 hours of classroom based learning held in Florence (Italy). The 30 hours course is organized in 6 days, Monday to Saturday, 5 hours each day.
30 hours of e-learning integrated with virtual meetings with the course tutor and the other course participants. A Forum is also available for virtual meetings among all participants.

The classroom course takes place at Pixel, in Florence, Italy.

METHODOLOGY

The approach used is highly practical, based on the expertise of the course trainers who have over 15 years of experience in planning and managing projects and initiatives funded by the European Commission, mainly in the sector of Education and Training.

A practical simulation is carried out for each topic in focus. The practical simulation is based on the use of the services, databases and documentation made available, on-line, by the European Union.
The objective of the practical activity is the simulation of the development and presentation of a European project.
At the end of the international Seminar, every work group will have produced a first draft of a European project including the application form, budget, transnational partnership etc.

FOLLOW UP

During the classroom course each participant is introduced to the e-learning course’s contents.

During the four weeks after the classroom course, 2 virtual meetings are organized between the course trainers and tutor and the course participants to further analyse and discuss the contents learnt at distance. An on line Forum is also available for all course participants to ask questions to the course trainers and share the answers with their colleagues.

Course Overview

The MSc programme is delivered over 2 semesters of taught modules, followed by the 60 credit final project. The programme can also be studied part-time, with the minimum period of study being two years and the maximum five years.

To meet the educational and professional needs of each student, the programme offers three awards and exit points: Postgraduate Certificate; Postgraduate Diploma and MSc. Learning and teaching strategies are designed to promote active engagement of the student with the subject area and reflect the strong vocational emphasis of the awards.

- Distinguishing features of the programme include:
The Industry Project Management module, which involves students undertaking a live consultancy project as a group. In addition, students will have the opportunity to gain an additional professionally accredited award (Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), accredited by the Project Management Institute) as part of this module.

An optional Internship module, which will enhance students’ employability.

An option for the final project is an Individual Consultancy Project, which gives students an opportunity to engage with an industry practitioner.

Students also have the opportunity to pursue a language module as an elective, potentially enhancing their employability.

Students can also engage with the opportunity to achieve additional professional certificates, e.g. Wine and Spirit Educational Trust, First Aid and Royal Society for Public Health Food Hygiene Awards, as these professional certificates provide added value and can enhance student CVs.

The Postgraduate Certificate can be awarded following the successful completion of 60-credits of taught modules from: Industry Project Management; Event Project Planning, Mobilisation & Evaluation; Managing People & Market;, Event Tendering, Feasibility & Conceptualisation; Crisis, Risk and Strategic Change Management.

The Postgraduate Diploma can be awarded following the successful completion of 120-credits of taught modules.
The MSc can be awarded following the successful completion of 120-credits of taught modules plus 60-credits from the Dissertation or Enterprise Project or Consultancy Project.

Postgraduate Diploma/MSc students can select one optional module (Tourism, Hospitality and Events Industries in Context, Internship or Crisis, Risk and Strategic Change Management) to customise their Award. In addition, on successful completion of 120 credits, MSc students can select a different format for their Independent Research Project (Dissertation or Enterprise Project or Consultancy Project) to customise their Award to meet their specific needs and career ambitions.

Employability & Careers

All students undertake a live consultancy project through the Industry Project Management module, which provides an opportunity to engage with employers in the industry. As part of this module, they have the opportunity to gain an accredited qualification from the Project Management Institute.

Student have the option to undertake the Internship module. The duration of this (unpaid) internship is either for a minimum of 20 days, which will normally be undertaken during term-time one day a week throughout semester one and semester two or in blocks of time during the semester breaks.

Alternatively, the students can undertake an internship (paid or unpaid) for the duration of 10-12 weeks (usually engaging in a full time role in an organisation) and this will normally be completed during semester three which would mean that the engagement with the final project would be deferred until September when the internship is completed and 120 credits are awarded.

Students undertake operational, supervisory and if possible, management tasks and duties within the organisation; During their internship students are expected to follow the same work pattern as other employees in the organisation and to perform routine work consistent with that which they aspire to on successful completion of their programme of study. They will also undertake a work based project tailored to meet the needs of the organisation. Students can opt for an individual consultancy project as their final project.

The majority have students have progressed to managerial roles within the industries.

This module will provide you with the critical analytical tools to determine the value of development appraisals, net present value techniques, residual land valuations and the role these play in the acquisition, disposal and evaluation of development opportunities. The module will consider the project management issues faced by a client over the whole project with the separate built environment module considering the construction phase issues.

Computing pathway

Information Systems Project Management (20 credits)
Project management related to information systems is ever growing in importance within a wide range of private and public sector environments, operating with an ever increasing need for efficient budgetary controls and successful completions on time.

The module provides you with a comprehensive appreciation of the associated good practise for Project Management, the skills and professional techniques used in preparation for their related roles and interactions within or associated to commercial project teams. Consultancy and Technological Innovation (20 credits)

Unit Information – What Will I Learn?

On this course you will undertake four 30 credit units and one 60 credit project unit.

Your course takes place over three semesters. Depending upon when you join the course, this will determine the order of units which you will study. You will benefit by beginning your studies with others who started at one of the earlier points of entry.

Induction week will prepare you well for study on your course. You will then study only one unit at a time, which will enable you to focus upon the subject. Capstone project

This Master's course provides the opportunity to undertake different types of project, a "Capstone" experience which completes the integration of your studies applied in one of the following:

• Professional Practice - the central aim of this unit is to provide you with a thorough understanding of the commercial context in which organisations operate. By reflecting upon your existing knowledge and experience you will be required to respond to a number of work-based scenarios through critical evaluation to determine an appropriate course of action.

• The Live Project - this will enable you to work as part of a team on a project provided by a business organisation. The exact nature of the level of work, and nature of responsibility will depend upon the chosen organisation. However, there will be close negotiation between the company and the Business School.

• The dissertation - this is a conventional dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words, enabling you to undertake in-depth research of a topic relating to your course. It will consist of research question, aims and objectives, rationale for undertaking the study, literature review, research methodology, analysis of findings, conclusions and recommendations.

In line with the Business School’s commitment to practice-based education, a large part of the assessment will relate to the demonstration of your ability to understand Project Management in practice.

Engineering projects are becoming increasingly complex, being undertaken by multi-disciplinary teams who collaborate to achieve project goals and so often require dedicated and qualified project managers. Project management has become the strategic focus of all successful organisations, and project management skills are considered a valuable attribute by employers.

In the foreseeable future, hydrocarbon (oil and gas) will still be the major energy source irrespective of the developments in renewable and nuclear energy. The term ‘flow assurance’ was coined by Petrobras in the early 1990s meaning literally “guarantee of flow.” It covers all methods to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of hydrocarbons from the well to the collection facilities. It is a multi-disciplinary activity involving a number of engineering disciplines including mechanical, chemical, process, control, instrumentation and software engineering.

Previously uneconomical fields are now being exploited - oil and gas are produced in hostile environments from deep water to the Arctic. As conventional oil reserves decline, companies are developing unconventional oil fields with complex fluid properties. All of these factors mean that flow assurance plays an increasingly important role in the oil and gas industry.

Course overview

The MSc in Flow Assurance for Oil and Gas Production is made up of nine compulsory taught modules (eight compulsory and one optional from a selection of three), a group project and an individual research project.

In addition to management, communication, team work and research skills, each student will attain at least the following outcomes from this degree course:

- Develop a professional ability to undertake a critical appraisal of technical and/or commercial literature.
- Demonstrate an ability to manage research studies, and plan and execute projects in the area of oil and gas production technology and flow assurance.
- Use of the techniques appropriate for the management of a oil and gas production and transport systems.
- Gain an in-depth understanding of the technical, economic and environmental issues involved in the design and operation of oil and gas production and transport systems.

Group project

The group project runs between February and April and is designed to give students invaluable experience of delivering a project within an industry structured team. The project is sponsored by industrial partners who provide particular problems linked to their plant operations. Projects generally require the group to provide a solution to the operational problem. This group project is shared across the Process Systems Engineering MSc, Flow Assurance MSc and Carbon Capture and Transport MSc, giving the added benefit of gaining new insights, ways of thinking, experience and skills from students with other backgrounds.

During the project you will develop a range of skills including learning how to establish team member roles and responsibilities, project management, and delivering technical presentations. All groups submit a written report and deliver a presentation to the industry partner. Part-time students will take an additional elective module instead of the group project.

It is clear that the modern design engineer cannot be divorced from the commercial world. In order to provide practice in this matter, a poster presentation will be required from all students. This presentation provides the opportunity to develop presentation skills and effectively handle questions about complex issues in a professional manner.

- A new operation mode design for a gas processing plant.

Individual Project

The individual research project allows students to delve deeper into a specific area of interest. Our industrial partners often put forward practical problems or areas of development as potential research topics. For part-time students, their research project is usually undertaken in collaboration with their place of work. The individual project takes place from April/May to August.

Modules

The taught programme for the Flow Assurance masters is generally delivered from October to March and is comprised of eight compulsory modules, and one optional module to select from a choice of four. The modules are delivered over one to two weeks of intensive delivery with the later part of the module being free from structured teaching to allow time for more independent learning and reflection. Students on the part-time programme will complete all of the compulsory modules based on a flexible schedule that will be agreed with the course director.

Assessment

Taught modules: 40%; Group project: 20% (dissertation for part-time students); Individual Research Project: 40%.
The taught modules are assessed by an examination and/or assignment. The Group Project is assessed by a written technical report and oral presentations. The Individual Research Project is assessed by a written thesis and oral presentation.

- Subject-specific skills and techniques. These amount to 55% of the research skills assessment, and for example may include parts of specialist taught courses (see below), a training course on the theory and practice of chemical and isotopic analysis, or other training arranged by the project supervisor. This will include training for research in the general field of the research project, not solely what is needed to carry out the project.

Research Project
The project may be on any topic which is within the broad research themes of the Department. You will be linked to a potential supervisor at the application stage and, in consultation with the supervisor, you will develop a detailed project outline during the first half of the first term. Project work is then carried out in parallel with taught courses during terms one and two, becoming the full-time activity after Easter. A bound dissertation is submitted for examination in early September.

On completion of the course graduates will have:

- an advanced knowledge and understanding of a variety of analytical, technical, numerical, modelling and interpretive techniques applicable to the specific field of earth sciences

- the articulation of knowledge and the understanding of published work, concepts and theories in the chosen field of earth sciences at an advanced level

- the acquisition of knowledge from published work in the chosen area of earth sciences to a level appropriate for a MSc degree.

Assessment

Research Study Skills: this is assessed by coursework and theory examination and will include short written assignments, a seminar, worksheets and practical tests. These assessments contribute 12.5% of the course marks.

Specialist Taught Course Units: these are mostly assessed by a written, theory examination and coursework. The unit assessment contributes 12.5% of the course marks.

Research Project: the project dissertation must be submitted in early September. It will be marked by both an internal and an external examiner, and will be defended at an oral examination with both examiners. The project assessment contributes 75% of the course marks.

Employability & career opportunities

Subject to agreement and suitable funding, MSc by Research students can transfer to the MPhil/PhD programme at Royal Holloway. They may use the research carried out for the MSc towards the PhD, and count the time spent towards MPhil/PhD registration requirements, provided that the MSc research forms a coherent part of the PhD, and that the transfer is approved prior to submission of the MSc research dissertation.

Structure

A personalised programme
The programme is personalised for each student, and is based on your individual research into your chosen practice. It gives you the opportunity to develop appropriate research skills and to pursue a research practice project of your own design, developed and reworked in discussion with a personal supervisor.

The curriculum is personalised for individual students, but all students will share a common curriculum and receive training and guidance in ethical and legal obligations, and be encouraged to accommodate feminist, anti-racist, decolonising and other appropriate approaches to their chosen subject.

The course will add value to recent MA practice graduates and to film, photography and electronic arts professionals by giving a deeper and more specialised engagement in a major research project supervised by staff experienced in both creative and professional research. Research training will give you the skills to design and complete your own research and to work to research briefs.

All students undertake the Practice-Based Research Methods Seminar in the first term, producing a detailed 5000 word project outline at the end. They will also take in the second term one of a selected range of optional modules to help develop their critical and theoretical awareness. In the first term, they begin work with their personal supervisor on the design and execution of their project. Supervision will determine the specific means used: some students will embark directly on a single piece of work; others may undertake a series of workshop-based activities.

Aims

The programme's subject-specific learning outcomes require you to think critically about a range of issues concerning the media, understood in the widest sense, and to be able to justify their views intellectually and practically. The central outcome will be to design and conduct a substantial practice-based research project.

As appropriate to each individual project, you will be encouraged to analyse, contextualise, historicise, and theorise your chosen medium with reference to key debates in history, sociology, anthropology and philosophy of film and the media. You will learn to produce high quality research under time constraints, by working independently.

All students will develop a range of transferable qualities and skills necessary for employment in related areas. These are described by the Quality Assurance Agency as: ‘the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility, decision-making in complex and unpredictable situations, and the independent learning ability required for continuing professional development’. You will be guided to work independently and to think through the intellectual issues.

Progress is carefully monitored, to make sure that you are making progress towards the achievement of the outcomes. Different kinds of practical and intellectual skills are required for each part of the programme. In consultation with supervisors, you will be guided to the most appropriate practical and intellectual approaches, and to the most appropriate technical and critical sources.

Structure

You take the following modules:

Practice-Based Research Methods (30 credits)
This module provides research methods training for the MRes in Film Photography and Electronic Arts, and may be taken by practice-based students in the MPhil programme in Media and Communications. In all years it will address the legal and ethical constraints operating on research by practice. In any given year, the syllabus will address such topics as technique (colour, composition, editing, post-production, sound-image relations, text-image relations), anti-racist, feminist and decolonial critique; hardware and software studies; environmental impacts of media production, dissemination and exhibition; media critical approaches to art, political economy, and truth. The interests of students and supervisors will guide the selection of specific content of the course in its delivery, whose aim is to inculcate advanced thinking on the making, delivery and audiences for research-based practice.

Research Project (120 credits)
The project in the MRes Film, Photography and Electronic Arts comprises a portfolio of practical work (such as photographs, video, film, installation, websites or other digital/print material) alongside a textual component. The work submitted should be original, and be as integral to the research aims, processes and outcomes of the project as the textual component. The final project as a whole will therefore demonstrate the integration of its practical and research components, so that text and practice reflect critically on each other. The length of the textual element should normally be between 5,000 and 10,000 words. The practical component should be a ‘substantial’ body of work. Given the potential range of media that can be used, and their differing potential relationships with the research process and the textual component, it is impossible to be precise. In the case of film/video it would normally entail the submission of a work (or works) of about 25 minutes in length (or more), but detailed requirements will be worked out on a case-by-case basis.

Students will undertake to design and conduct a substantial practice-based research project in collaboration with their supervisor. The project will be informed by research, as appropriate, into the materials, techniques and critical contexts of production, distribution and exhibition in audiovisual, electronic image and allied arts. As appropriate to each individual project, students will be encouraged to analyse, contextualise, historicise, and theorise their chosen medium with reference to key debates in history, sociology, anthropology and philosophy of film and the media, especially in relation to anti-racist, decolonial, feminist, environmental and other key ethical and political dimensions of their aesthetic practice. They will learn to produce high quality research under pressure, by working independently. The exact conceptual and methodological direction of the research must initially come from the student, though this will be developed and reworked in discussion with the personal supervisor. Areas of research can be drawn from a wide remit, including the full range of media and cultural forms of contemporary societies and may be theoretical or empirical; technically- or more academically-based. Projects which are conceptually coherent, and practicable in their aims and methods can be considered, subject only to the in-house expertise of staff. The module encourages the development of knowledge and skills specific to the production, distribution and exhibition of contemporary media.

Assessment

There are two assessment points:

A: You are required to write one 5,000 word essay linked to the Practice-Based Research Methods seminar. The exact theme and title will be decided in discussion between you and your supervisor and relate to your specialist field of research, but as a guide it will demonstrate your readiness to undertake the project through critical evaluation of legal, ethical, critical and reflexive parameters and functions of practice-based research.

In addition, you will be assessed in the option module you undertake during the Spring Term.

Overview

The Postgraduate Certificate in Research and Evaluation course is a Master’s level course open to pharmacy practitioners who are registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), or equivalent for practitioners working overseas, and who are practising either full-time or part-time. The course is also open to other appropriately qualified practising health professionals who have studied to at least undergraduate degree level, or who have at least 5 years’ experience of practising in their field, at the discretion of the programme manager. Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Course Content

The course is designed around the three compulsory modules. The delivery media used, outline content and activities for each are described below. You will also attend an Induction Session at the beginning of the course. You will normally complete the Certificate in under 12 months, but you have the option of taking longer.

- Induction Session
You will attend an Induction session at Keele led by Medicines Management/School of Pharmacy staff at the start of the course. The date of the induction depends on when you start the course, but will normally be in September or January. This session will give you the opportunity to meet with other practitioners who are doing a pharmacy-related Master’s degree or APD course and with your tutor(s) who will support you on future modules of the certificate course.

The cost of the Induction session is included in the course fee. However, you must meet the full costs of travel and any overnight accommodation required.

- Advanced Practice Development (APD) Module
This module will be directed by you under the supervision of a Keele tutor(s). This module allows you to focus on an area of your professional practice that you have chosen, therefore you will negotiate specific learning outcomes, content, activities and overall format of your portfolio with your tutor.

It is anticipated that you will meet with your tutor following the Induction session, to discuss your initial ideas then finalise the learning outcomes during further meeting(s) - either face to face or virtual – as agreed necessary between you and your tutor.

If you are completing this module to support your accreditation as a Pharmacist with Special Interests (PhwSI), the specific learning outcomes will be based on the published required competencies for PhwSIs.

Given the student-led, flexible nature of this module you will be in control of your input to its achievement but we advise you to arrange any work shadowing or visits early on. You will be required to complete a portfolio ready for review by the due date.

This module is also available for you to complete on a stand-alone basis so that you do not have to commit to doing the whole Certificate course.

- Researching and Evaluating Your Practice Module
This is a distance learning module. The majority of the learning materials will be provided in the Course Reader, so that you can study where and when it is convenient for you. Some sections signpost to resources that are available to download from Keele’s virtual learning environment (KLE). You are also expected to do your own reading as guided by and beyond the reading list that will be provided in the module, particularly in relation to the research methods you plan to use in your Independent Learning Project.

The Course Reader is divided into five sections:
• Section 1 - The principles of research
• Section 2 – Literature review
• Section 3 – Research methods
• Section 4 – Analysing data
• Section 5 - Validity, reliability and allied concepts

You will be required to participate in some on-line activities, to help you to develop the course assessment. These will either be on-line discussions with other students, or e-mail discussions with your tutor depending on the numbers of students on the course. You are required to submit your assessment (project proposal) for this module to Keele by the due date.

This module is also available for you to complete on a stand-alone basis so that you do not have to commit to doing the whole Certificate course.

- Independent Learning Project (ILP) Module
To be able to start this module you must have completed the APD and Researching and Evaluating Your Practice modules first.

For the ILP module you will conduct a project into an aspect of your chosen area of practice. The project will be an evaluation of an existing service, or evaluation of existing professional practice that might benefit from new service development. This will be informed by your learning from the APD module and the Researching and Evaluating Your Practice module and will require rigour, critical thinking and high quality presentation.

You are required to have passed the APD and the Researching and Evaluating Your Practice modules before you can begin the Independent Learning Project. You will be granted 6 months from receiving approval in which to complete the project. The due date for the project report will be agreed at the time approval is granted.

You will be assigned to a tutor (normally the same tutor who supported you for the APD module) for the duration of the module. Further meetings (face-to-face or virtual) will take place as agreed, if necessary, between you and your tutor. You will be provided with more information at the start of the module.
