Competency in project management has become a key part of the skills-set of every construction professional and executive, with many construction project managers functioning in a strategic and co-ordinating role in the delivery of the client’s physical development and investment programme.

Society continues to value and shape the built environment resulting in both public and private investment in construction assets and the successful completion of construction projects. As these projects become more socially and technically complex in a changing world dominated by a concern for sustainability, there has been a growing challenge to develop existing and new skills and expertise in construction project management. This challenge is not only national but global as the need for construction project management skills continues to grow internationally. Indeed, our student cohorts reflect this global challenge with students from across multiple continents.

We have been running programmes in MSc Construction Project Management for nearly 20 years. This arose from the need to extend the managerial remit to those activities that fall outside the construction phase to include areas such as financing, design and hand-over. The programme is therefore tailored for construction professionals looking for a more holistic perspective of construction project processes and the challenge of project management in complex building and infrastructure projects.

Accreditation of the programme is provided by the UK’s Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Engineering Council and The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

Core study areas include: Building Information Modelling, Design Management and Sustainability in the Built Environment.

Programme modules

- ICT for Construction Projects
This module introduces managers to a wide range of tools and technologies appropriate for their role and projects. The module covers a range of topics including project information flows, e-business, database technologies, emerging technologies, building information modelling technologies, groupware and collaborative systems.

- Research and Communication
The aims of this module are to provide the student with an overview of sources of information in construction; to explain to students how to conduct a literature review and introduce students to the principal methods of investigation in construction research; and provide an opportunity for each student to develop professional and academic skills in oral and written communication.

- Principles of Design and Construction
This module teaches students the fundamental principles of managing a project during the design and construction phases. The module develops knowledge and understanding of the role and principles of the estimating, tendering and planning of construction projects and the importance of health and safety in relation to design and construction activities.

- Principles of Project Management
Students will gain an understanding of construction project management principles and theory. Specific areas covered include management responsibility for running construction projects; contemporary issues facing the construction industry; cultural complexity and the impact of behaviour and motivation on performance; and applying appropriate project management techniques for the different project phases.

- Design Management
This module introduces various Design Management techniques and approaches. These include process mapping techniques for design; ways to analyse and optimise the design process; and students will gain an understanding of the internal workings of a design office and their relationship with the construction team.

- Sustainability and the Built Environment
Students will gain an understanding of sustainability issues that relate to the built environment; ways in which these issues can be managed and effective communication of both strategic and technical information.

- Management of Construction Processes
This module introduces students to cutting edge contemporary management concepts and innovations; complexities of setting up and managing logistics on large construction sites; and essential project management techniques such as risk management.

- Postgraduate Research Project
The aim of this module is to provide the student with experience of the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to Construction Project Management.

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of strategic management and the tools for formulating and implementing strategies within the construction sector. The application of strategic management tools to develop appropriate change strategies will be explored and fundamental skills in communication, negotiation and leadership will be developed.

- People and Teams
Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of the key fundamental management principles and theory (such as motivation, teamwork, leadership, task management) and how they can be applied to managing people within the context of the construction project environment. Students will also be able to analyse current theoretical approaches to people management, appreciate importance of ethics and cultural issues and evaluate the key factors driving HRM systems.

- Procurement and Contract Procedure
This module aims to develop students understanding of procurement methods, different forms of contract and contract practice. The module is designed to give students key practical skills including advising clients on appropriate procurement and tendering methods; selecting the most appropriate form of construction contract; and manage a construction contract effectively.

- Business Economics and Finance
Students will gain a sound understanding of macro, meso and micro economics and types, sources and management of finance relating to construction organisations and projects. This will allow students to analyse the policies and operations of construction organisations and projects from an economic perspective to determine likely performance consequences and analyse corporate financial data for investment prospects and business management decisions.

- Federated 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM)
The creation, deployment and use of aggregated and integrated models are key goals of collaboration through BIM. This module aims to deliver hands-on practical skills on the use of BIM technologies (i.e. design software and collaboration tools) for real-time co-creation and data sharing of federated/aggregated 3D BIM models. The concept of shared situational awareness within design teams/processes will be explored.

Careers and further study

Previous students have gone on to work for a variety of organisations nationally and internationally. These include Arup, Atkins, BAM Nuttall Ltd, Balfour Beatty, Kier Group, Morgan Sindall, Skanska and Transport for London. Many of these organisations engage with the University in both collaborative research and in delivering lectures on the courses. This provides an ideal opportunity for students to engage in discussions about employment opportunities.

Scholarships and bursaries

The University offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a county outside the European Union. These Scholarships are to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.

Each year, students are coming from very different nationalities and backgrounds to join this postgraduate master programme. Students are divided into different multicultural groups working in team on a real project. Students are coming up with project idea, working on it from scratch, definining the scope, planning for it and finally putting it into action. Through the full project lifecycle, professors will support, monitor and guide the students to run the project. Each milestone is presented in front of a jury composed with professors and members of the PMI.

Professionalisation

 Internship and Thesis

Students of the Project Management Programme will carry out an internship or a job placement of a minimum of 4 months in France, Europe or any other location abroad.

The objective of the internship is to gain hands-on experience and consolidate the knowledge and techniques that are obtained during the course.

Each student is individually supervised by a designated advisor and completes a professional thesis, followed by an oral defense and company assessment.

The Commercial Project Management MSc is a full time course which is studied over 12 months, starting in September each year. The course comprises eight taught course units, each worth 15 credits, and a research dissertation worth 60 credits. Students on this particular MSc study four core units fundamental to project management, and which are shared by students on the other MSc courses. In addition, students on this course study Contract Management and programme specific unit, Commercial Management, where students work in teams to produce documents related to the buying and selling side of a case study activity. Students must also select two optional units and carry out a Commercial Project Management based dissertation.

Assessment of the taught part of the programme is via a combination of formal written examinations and coursework assignments, which will include group work and oral presentations. Some assessment is based on online material provided by the Association for Project Management (APM) and PRINCE2 (a process-based method for effective project management).

The MSc Commercial Project Management Programme acquaints students with the basic processes of project management but focuses more specifically on the commercial aspects of project management, the establishment of stable, profitable and low-risk exchange relationships for project procurement or sales and the management of the contracts that represent these relationships in a range of project settings. Practical skills in the buy and side project procurement, contract management and conflict and dispute resolution are developed. Successful graduates of this programme find employment in a wide range of commercial-related roles, from forensic delay analysis to quantity surveying to general project management in companies such as Blackrock, Costain, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Yendall Hunter, PwC.

Accrediting organisations

The course is divided into three stages, the first two stages are generally taught through formal tuition, with stage three covering independent research in an academic or industrial setting.

You will build upon established fundamental construction engineering and project management principles in order to confidently apply them to a range of complex construction projects. You will gain a deep understanding of the social, economic and environmental issues that can affect such projects along with the expertise to tackle them.

Here are the units you will study:

Construction Law, Contracts and Dispute Resolution: In this unit you will study the legal system within which construction projects are undertaken. You will also cover contracts' formation and performance issues, contracts' documentation and dispute resolution methods.

Project Management and Software: This unit introduces you to the Project Management Institute’s model, known as the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK), and industry-standard project management software.

Project Management Tools, Techniques and Processes: You will gain project management tools, techniques and processes in the construction industry.

Strategic and General Management: In this unit you will cover management in the construction industry, and the development of organisational and project strategic direction, taking into account internal and external environments.

Independent Research Project: This covers the generic research framework within which new knowledge is discovered, and involves the practical application of research skills and techniques to a chosen system within the construction industry.

The programme is designed for students with a degree in computer science and/or experience in software engineering who wish to develop their career further into project management while working in the IT industry. Graduates will be prepared for the challenges of their industrial career as software project managers.

Although the statistics on IT project success worldwide are more promising than a decade ago, there is still scope for further improvement. Appropriate project management and development processes can avoid some problems and capture others at an early stage, hence lead to higher success rates. Project management skills and qualifications are increasingly being recognised as key to the success of IT projects.

This new programme combines the specific technical content of the full-time taught MSc IT Project Management programme with the benefits of the work-based MSc Professional Engineering programme.

The programme is designed to equip its graduates with both generic project management and specific software project management skills, which is expected to lead to a career managing successful software projects with the potential to reach a leadership role.

Primarily, to enable participants to acquire the Masters level knowledge, understanding and skills required for full UK registration as a Chartered Engineer, whilst remaining in full time employment and studying through a suitable programme of work based learning.

Secondly, to provide a framework in which participants can plan and carry through a structured schedule of activities designed to permit acquisition and demonstration of the full range of competences required for Chartered Engineer registration.

The programme aims to support a wide range of IT specialisations and participant needs. Learning, Teaching & Assessment

The course begins with a Professional Development Audit (PDA), where we help students evaluate what they have done previously and what they need to add to gain the MSc and qualify for CEng. Based on the PDA, the student and Aston University set up an individual Learning Agreement which specifies the areas of study to be undertaken and how that study will be carried out, through suitable combinations of workplace projects and distance learning, and assessed – mainly through reports on the workplace projects. The student then works through the agreed study and assessment, with support from Aston University staff and a workplace mentor, gradually building over an agreed period to completion and award of the MSc.

Professional Accreditation

Successful completion of the programme in accordance with a learning contract, approved by a professional engineering institution signatory to the relevant Engineering Council protocol (BCS or IET), guarantees access to the institution’s process for professional review for CEng registration. Confirmation of CEng registration will be at the discretion of the engineering institution concerned.

The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering has a long history of delivering project management related masters courses and the staff who deliver the programme are drawn for a wide variety of backgrounds and industrial experience.

Teaching and learning

The Engineering Project Management MSc is a full time course which is studied over 12 months, starting in September each year. The programme comprises eight taught course units, each worth 15 credits, and a research dissertation worth 60 credits. Students study four core units fundamental to project management, and which are shared by students on the other programmes within the group. In addition, the Innovation Management unit is programme specific unit where students will be required to collaborate in a project team to interpret information, make decisions, solve problems and overcome difficulties associated with teamwork and communication when managing an innovation project. Students must also select three option units and carry out an Engineering Project Management based dissertation.

Assessment of the taught part of the programme is via a combination of formal written examinations and coursework assignments, which will include group work and oral presentations. Some assessment is based on online material provided by the Association for Project Management (APM) and PRINCE2 (a process-based method for effective project management).

The MSc Engineering Project Management Programme acquaints students with the basic processes of project management but focuses more specifically on the application of these in an engineering and innovation context. Practical skills in engineering-based innovation projects and protection and exploitation of intellectual property are developed. Successful graduates of this programme find employment in a wide range of organisations such as High Speed Two (HS2) Ltd, Nissan Technical Center South East Asia, Worley Parsons India, Saudi Aramco.

Accrediting organisations

The MSc in Engineering Project Management is listed by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) as being Approved Further Learning Schemes for Chartered Engineer. The JBM represents the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institute of Highway Incorporated Engineers. This means that successful completion of the MSc will enable applicants with an accredited first degree at BEng level to become chartered engineers.

Students who successfully complete the unit MACE 60062 Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution optional unit are eligible for associate membership of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

We have a long tradition of cutting-edge photonics research, which supports our courses. Much of this work has resulted in significant industrial impact through our spin-out companies and academic-industrial collaborations.

You’ll study

The course is made up of two semesters of taught classes, followed by a three-month research project based with one of our industrial partners. The majority of your classes are delivered by the Department of Physics and cover the following:
-research and grant writing skills, which are valuable in both academic and commercial settings
-project training, including entrepreneurial and innovation skills training and a literature survey preparing for the project in the company
-topics in photonics, covering laser physics, laser optics and non-linear optics
-optical design, where you will learn about advanced geometrical optics and apply this knowledge to the design of optical systems, through the use of modern optical design software
-photonic materials and devices, focusing on semiconductor materials physics and micro/nano-structures
-advanced photonic devices and applications, covering quantum well structures, waveguides and photonic crystals

These classes are complemented by two classes delivered by the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering, which look at:
-system engineering and electronic control which forms a key part of modern optical systems
-photonic systems, where fibre optic communications systems and principles of photonic networks are discussed

Work placement

You'll be based with one of our industrial partners for a three-month project placement. This is your opportunity to experience how research and development operate within a commercial environment. It'll also give you a chance to form strong links with industry contacts.

The project is put forward by the company and supervised by both industrial and academic staff. Training on relevant skills and background will be received before and during the project.

Scotland has a world-leading position in optics and photonics industry.Your project will be carried out mainly in the excellent facilities of our Scottish industry partners. Projects elsewhere in the UK and with international companies may also be possible.

Our research is strongly supported in equipment and infrastructure. This includes a newly opened 3-storey wing in the John Anderson Building as part of a £13M investment programme in Physics. Furthermore, the IoP and FCAP have recently relocated into the University's Technology & Innovation Centre (TIC) which at £90 million TIC is Strathclyde’s single-biggest investment in research and technology collaboration capacity. This new centre will accelerate the way in which researchers in academia and industry collaborate and innovate together in a new specifically designed state-of-the-art building in the heart of Glasgow.

You'll attend the seminar series of the Institute of Photonics and Fraunhofer Centre of Applied Photonics with distinguished guest speakers giving a first-hand overview of the rapid development in applied photonics research.

Learning & teaching

In semesters one and two, the course involves:

The courses include compulsory and elective classes from the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering.
Over the summer, you'll undertake a three-month project based on practical laboratory work in a partner company. You'll be supervised by the industrial partner and supported by an academic supervisor.

Assessment methods are different for each class and include:

-marked homework consisting of problems and/or essay assignments

Your practical project is assessed on a combination of a written report, an oral presentation, and a viva in which you're questioned on the project.

Course details

This option is comprised of 14 compulsory modules and a minimum of 60 hours of optional modules, selected from a list of 10 options. You are also required to complete a group design project and an individual research project. Delivered via a combination of structured lectures, industry guest lectures, computer based workshops and private study.

A unique feature of the course is that we have four external examiners; two from industry who assess the group design project and two from academia who assess the individual research project.

Group project

The extensive group design project is a distinctive and unique feature of this course. This teamwork project takes place over six months, usually between October and March; and recreates a virtual industrial environment bringing together students with various experience levels and different nationalities into one integrated design team.

You will be given responsibility for the detailed design of a significant part of the aircraft, for example, forward fuselage, fuel system, or navigation system. The project will progress from the conceptual phase through to the preliminary and detail design phases. You are required to run project meetings, produce engineering drawings and detailed analyses of their design. Problem solving and project coordination must be undertaken on a team and individual basis. At the end of the project, groups are required to report and present findings to a panel of 200 senior engineers from industry.

This element of the course is both real and engaging, and places the student group in a professional role as aerospace design engineers. Students testify that working as an integrated team on real problems is invaluable and prepares them well for careers in a highly competitive industry.

The individual research project aims to provide the training necessary for you to apply knowledge from the taught element to research, and takes place over six months. The project may be theoretical and/or experimental and drawn from a range of topics related to the course and suggested by teaching staff, your employer or focused on your own area of interest.

Its major challenges are the development of concepts, methodologies and models for the prediction of performance and for decision-making for an engineered system.

Suitable for engineering and applied science graduates who wish to embark on successful careers as process systems engineering professionals. 

The course equips graduates and practising engineers with an in-depth knowledge of the fundamentals of process systems and an excellent competency in the use of state-of-the-art approaches to deal with the major operational and design issues of the modern process industry. The course provides up-to-date technical knowledge and skills required for achieving the best management, design, control and operation of efficient process systems. 

Why this course?

Process systems engineering constitutes an interdisciplinary research area within the chemical engineering discipline. It focuses on the use of experimental techniques and systematic computer-aided methodologies for the design, operation, optimisation and control of chemical, physical, and biological processes, e.g. from chemical and petrochemical processes to pharmaceutical and food processes. 

A distinguished feature of this course is that it is not directed exclusively at chemical engineering graduates. Throughout the years, the course has evolved from discussions with industrial advisory panels, employers, sponsors and previous students. The content of the study programme is updated regularly to reflect changes arising from technical advances, economic factors and changes in legislation, regulations and standards.

By completing this course, a diligent student will be able to: 

  • Evaluate the technical, environmental and economic issues involved in the design and operation of process plants and the current practice in process industries.
  • Apply effectively the knowledge gained to the design, operation, optimisation and control of process systems via proper methodologies and relevant software.
  • Apply independent learning, especially via the effective use of information retrieval systems and a competent and professional approach to solving problems of industrial process systems.
  • Apply and critically evaluate key technical management principles, including project management, people management, technology marketing, product development and finance.
  • Apply advanced approaches and use effectively related tools in more specialised subjects related to process industries (for example risk management, biofuels or CFD tools).

Course details

The taught programme for the MSc in Process Systems Engineering is delivered from October to February and is comprised of six compulsory taught modules. There are four optional modules to select the remaining two modules from.

Group project

The Group Project, which runs between February and April, enables you to put the skills and knowledge developed during the course modules into practice in an applied context while gaining transferable skills in project management, teamwork and independent research. The group project is usually sponsored by industrial partners who provide particular problems linked to their plant operations. Projects generally require the group to provide a solution to the operational problem. Potential future employers value this experience. This group project is shared across the MSc in Process Systems Engineering and other courses, giving the added benefit of gaining new insights, ways of thinking, experience and skills from students with other backgrounds

During the project you will develop a range of skills including learning how to establish team member roles and responsibilities, project management, and delivering technical presentations. At the end of the project, all groups submit a written report and deliver a presentation to the industrial partner. This presentation provides the opportunity to develop interpersonal and presentation skills within a professional environment.

It is clear that the modern engineer cannot be divorced from the commercial world. In order to provide practice in this matter, a poster presentation will be required from all students. This presentation provides the opportunity to develop presentation skills and effectively handle questions about complex issues in a professional manner.

Part-time students are encouraged to participate in a group project as it provides a wealth of learning opportunities. However, an option of an individual dissertation is available if agreed with the Course Director.

Individual project

The individual research project allows you to delve deeper into a specific area of interest. As our academic research is so closely related to industry, it is very common for our industrial partners to put forward real-world problems or areas of development as potential research topics.

The individual research project component takes place between April/May and August for full-time students. For part-time students, it is common that their research projects are undertaken in collaboration with their place of work under academic supervision; given the approval of the Course Director.

Individual research projects undertaken may involve designs, computer simulations, feasibility assessments, reviews, practical evaluations and experimental investigations.

Course Description

The Aircraft Design option of the MSc in Aerospace Vehicle Design (AVD) aims to provide a comprehensive overview of aircraft performance, structures and systems. A holistic teaching approach is taken to explore how the individual elements of an aircraft can be designed and integrated using up-to-date methods and techniques. You will learn to understand how to select specific systems such as fuel systems, and their effect on the aircraft as a whole.
This course is suitable for students with a background in aeronautical or mechanical engineering or those with relevant industrial experience.

Overview

Modern aircraft design focuses on the integration of new technologies and systems, with current and advanced configurations to lead us towards environmentally friendly and cost effective aviation in the civil arena and high performance and effective aviation in the military arena. This includes new structures, materials and manufacturing processes. New aircraft design is essential to address issues such as carbon footprint reduction, lower noise pollution and improved passenger comfort as well as contributing to national security.

Our work in this field covers all flying vehicles including civil and military aircraft, helicopters, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Systems (UAVS), ultra-high capacity airlines and space vehicles. Current research being undertaken includes:

Advanced Configurations – such as blended wing and morphing wing aircraft design. This includes both fixed wing and rotorcraft vehicles.

Advanced Systems Integration – such as Distributed Propulsion using hydrogen or alternative fuels for power and high temperature superconducting materials technology.

Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Processes – exploring the benefits achieved through the application of advanced composite materials.

Advanced Design Methodologies – developing techniques to ensure that optimum designs are achieved.

Airworthiness Compliance – ensuring new designs demonstrate the same safety requirements as traditional aircraft.

Operational Aspects – cost, performance, reliability and maintainability are important features of aircraft design as well as advanced techniques such as Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM). Vulnerability and susceptibility also have a major impact.

Biomimetics – taking lessons from nature for example insects and birds, and their application in aviation such as launch, recovery and flight.

Structure

The Aircraft Design option consists of a taught component, a group design project and an individual research project.

Individual Project

The individual research project aims to provide the training necessary for you to apply knowledge from the taught element to research, and takes place from March to September. The project may be theoretical and/or experimental and drawn from a range of topics related to the course and suggested by teaching staff, your employer or focused on your own area of interest.

Group Project

The extensive group design project is a distinctive and unique feature of this course. This teamwork project takes place from October to March, and recreates a virtual industrial environment bringing together students with various experience levels and different nationalities into one integrated design team.

Each team member is given responsibility for the detailed design of a significant part of the aircraft, for example, forward fuselage, fuel system, or navigation system. The project will progress from the conceptual phase through to the preliminary and detail design phases. You will be required to run project meetings, produce engineering drawings and detailed analyses of your design. Problem solving and project coordination must be undertaken on a team and individual basis. At the end of the project, groups are required to report and present findings to a panel of 200 senior engineers from industry.

This element of the course is both realistic and engaging, and places the student group in a professional role as aerospace design engineers. Students testify that working as an integrated team on real problems is invaluable and prepares them well for careers in a highly competitive industry.

Assessment

The taught modules (10%) are assessed by an examination and/or assignment. The Group Project (50%) is assessed by a written technical report and oral presentations. The Individual Research Project (40%) forms the remainder of the course.

Career opportunities

The MSc in Aircraft Design is valued and respected by employers worldwide. The applied nature of this course ensures that our graduates are ready to be of immediate use to their future employer and has provided sufficient breadth of understanding of multi-discipline design to position them for accelerated career progression.

This course prepares graduates for careers as project design engineers, systems design, structural design or avionic engineers in aerospace or related industries, with the aim of progressing to technical management/chief engineer.
