The MSc DNA Profiling is a Forensic Science Society UK (FSSoc) accredited course that aims to instruct in current concepts in molecular biology techniques and laboratory management as applied in the field of Forensic DNA Profiling. The various interpretational skills taught in the course follow International Society of Forensic Genetics (ISFG) and SWGDAM guidelines. The course syllabus exceeds the recommendation of the Scientific Working Group on DNA Analysis Methods (SWGDAM) USA for the educational requirements for a DNA laboratory technical leader. Intellectually challenging and highly rewarding, the MSc provides excellent hands-on practical learning in various laboratory techniques. It also builds the capabilities to plan and execute a research project. LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

You will, on average, attend fifteen hours of lectures/seminars/practicals per week and may participate in both workshops and tutorials. Personal study also forms an integral part of the programme. The students are required to complete challenging assessments that are mostly course work, group projects, presentations, moot court and practical assessments. There is only one theory based examination in the course.

Investigative psychology is the systematic science that developed out of early ‘offender profiling' contributions by psychologists and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to police investigations and court cases. In recent years this sub-discipline has become an increasingly dominant area of forensic psychology.

The course covers the full range of contributions that professional psychologists can make including the legal and investigative process; evaluating the validity of suspect or witness accounts; assessing the decision-making processes of detectives or jurors; to developing profiling inferences about the likely characteristics of an offender and predicting their likely home location.

Much of this expertise is predicated upon the detailed understanding of criminal action patterns, so intensive examinations of the variations in criminal behavioural style are a central feature of this course.

This course aim to provide in-depth expertise in all aspects of Investigative Psychology as developed by the originator of the discipline Professor David Canter. The MSc in Sports Injury Management has been designed to address the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required by a health professional wishing to pursue a career in sports medicine. The aim of the course is to enhance your understanding of the management of sports injuries from diagnosis, through rehabilitation to return to sport. Stream overview

The Data Science stream provides an interdisciplinary training in analysis of ‘big data’ from modern high throughput biomolecular studies. This is achieved through a core training in multivariate statistics, chemometrics and machine learning methods, along with research experience in the development and application of these methods to real world biomedical studies. There is an emphasis on handling large-scale data from molecular phenotyping techniques such as metabolic profiling and related genomics approaches. Like the other MRes streams, this course exposes students to the latest developments in the field through two mini-research projects of 20 weeks each, supplemented by lectures, workshops and journal clubs. The stream is based in the Division of Computational and Systems Medicine and benefits from close links with large facilities such as the MRC-NIHR National Phenome Centre, the MRC Clinical Phenotyping Centre and the Centre for Systems Oncology. The Data Science stream is developed in collaboration with Imperial’s Data Science Institute.

Who is this course for?

Students with a degree in physical sciences, engineering, mathematics computer science (or related area) who wish to apply their numeric skills to solve biomedical problems with big data.

Stream Objectives

Students will gain experience in analysing and modelling big data from technologically advanced techniques applied to biomedical questions. Individuals who successfully complete the course will have developed the ability to:

• Perform novel computational informatics research and exercise critical scientific thought in the interpretation of results.
• Implement and apply sophisticated statistical and machine learning techniques in the interrogation of large and complex
biomedical data sets.
• Understand the cutting edge technologies used to conduct molecular phenotyping studies on a large scale.
• Interpret and present complex scientific data from multiple sources.
• Mine the scientific literature for relevant information and develop research plans.
• Write a grant application, through the taught grant-writing exercise common to all MRes streams.
• Write and defend research reports through writing, poster presentations and seminars.
• Exercise a range of transferable skills by taking short courses taught through the Graduate School and the core programme of the

A wide range of research projects is made available to students twice a year. The projects available to each student are determined by their stream. The programme prepares skilled and experienced analysts with sound scientific principles on which to base their work.

Learning & Teaching​

​The course is delivered in the purpose built Performance Analysis Laboratory. Where logistically possible most lectures are scheduled for a Monday, however depending on module selection this my not be possible.

All modules, with the exception of the independent research project (dissertation) module are 20 credit modules. Allocated teaching timetabled (contact time) delivery for such modules usually equals a minimum of 30 hours of time supplemented with up to 60 hours of directed study time and up to 60 hours of independent study time. Contact time is normally made up of lectures, seminars, and individual tutorials.

Modules are usually taught through a combination of lecture type and interactive seminar where group discussions and tasks are frequently used. Student learning is supported through the use of our Virtual Learning Environment, Moodle, which provides learning resources to complement the reading lists. All students are supported with access to a personal tutor, who is normally the Programme Director.​

Assessment

The assessment is a rich mixture of practical evidence of absorbing the content, embracing presentations, edited video, experimental essays, reports, and critical reviews.

Employability & Careers​

Due to the demands of National Governing Bodies, satellite and terrestrial TV companies, soccer clubs, rugby clubs, Welsh Institute of Sport, the English Institutes (regional centres) of Sport there has been an increase in the range of career opportunities in the field of performance analysis. This course is designed for those with a first degree in either forensic science or another science subject (ideally chemistry or biology but other degrees are also acceptable) who want to further their knowledge and experience of forensic science.

The full-time distance learning MSc should be completed in 18 months including your dissertation. There is a two-week long residential practical programme, held at our Stoke-on-Trent campus at the end of Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma stages of study. These workshops enable you to put your learning into practice and gain valuable experience in our state-of-the-art laboratories, crime scene house and mock courtroom facilities.

The MSc dissertation completes your study. This is a independent research project which will usually be undertaken, at least in part, in our state of the art specialist facilities.

Course content

This course builds upon your previous experience in the biological, chemical or forensic or other appropriate sciences to develop your ability to analyse evidence in a myriad of forms. The emphasis is on accuracy, accountability and thoroughness, with the ultimate aim of providing results and interpretation for use by a court of law. The theory is delivered using Blackboard, an online virtual learning environment. This provides the flexibility of studying at your own pace and from any location in the world. Whilst using Blackboard, you will interact with other students on the course through online discussion groups and receive excellent support from tutors via e-mail or phone.

The Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma courses are, respectively, the first third and first two thirds of the MSc course. At Postgraduate Certificate level, the emphasis is on the crime scene, specifically the collection, packaging and analysis of evidence such as fingermarks, footwear marks, documents, hairs, fibres and glass. Those continuing on to the Postgraduate Diploma will then change the emphasis of their studies to the chemical and biological analysis of evidence in forensic laboratories. During the Diploma, you will learn about a host of techniques, from the interpretation of blood spatter evidence to the analysis of illicit drugs, and from DNA profiling to the analysis of fire accelerants and drugs. The Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma stages of study each end in a two-week long residential practical programme, held at our Stoke-on-Trent campus. These summer workshops enable you to put your learning into practice and gain valuable experience in our state-of-the-art laboratories, crime scene house and mock courtroom facilities.

MSc students continue their studies beyond the Postgraduate Diploma stage, allowing specialisation in an aspect of forensic science. To complete the MSc, you will undertake a independent research project in an area either suggested by yourself or by choosing a title from a list of topics. In this work, the emphasis is on initiative and originality in the analysis and interpretation of results. The experimental part will usually be undertaken at our Stoke-on-Trent campus but, by agreement, could be based at the learner’s place of work or at a local institute.

Digital games have become an important and innovative part of contemporary popular culture, out-competing cinema in terms of revenue. Commercial games may in part be the result of market forces but they are also products of a marriage between art, design and computational form.

What is it that makes for a good game design and good gameplay? What cultural and social values do games carry in terms of their design and form? What types of theories and concepts might we use to help make games that engage and excite players?

This new and innovative masters programme will help you to answer such questions through intensive creative game-making as well as providing the opportunity for you to reflect in theoretically informed ways on your own creative practice and on your own experience of playing games. The programme is taught by game design professionals and theorists who have played significant roles in developing digital game studies as an academic discipline. It offers a unique opportunity for you to analyse in depth what constitutes good game design through a range of practical exercises and written papers. Whether you have experience of making game mods, are already working in the industry, or you are a games’ enthusiast without a technical background, this programme is designed to appeal to those with a desire to explore game design, the theories behind such designs and the place of games in culture.

This Master of Arts programme is designed for those with an interest in the design and cultural significance of digital games. Students will engage in, and experiment with, practical games creation, with workshops led by designers working in the industry, as well as exploring a range of theories and concepts with which to analyse the values of games, play and pleasure.

The programme will be delivered by a team of experienced games researchers, some of whom have played a pioneering role in making digital game studies a new academic discipline. You will engage with a range of game types and styles, from first person shooters to massively multiplayer role-playing games. This MA focuses on conceptual game design as opposed to software development/programming, unlike many MScs focused on interactive media. We take a back-to-basic-principles approach to game design, something often advocated by key industry figures looking for innovation in the field, which will allow you to gain a deep understanding of the fundamental principles of creating original, enjoyable and challenging games.

TYPICAL MODULES
Game Design I
Investigates the principles behind the rules and play of games. A detailed study of how games function to create experiences, including rule design, play, mechanics/structure, game balancing, social game interaction and the integration of textual strategies to create the gaming experience.

Critical Approaches
Explores the criticism and analysis of games. A detailed study and evaluation of the different methodological and theoretical approaches used in the study of games/videogames.

Game Design II
Building on work in Game Design I students will develop, individually, a design for a game for a particular platform (phone, PC, handheld, console etc). The game can be delivered in digital format for those with technical skills or as a storyboard, character profiles, visual ‘mood board’/style palette, sound-effects/music profiling. The project will demonstrate practical application of ideas explored in Critical Approaches.

Socio-Cultural Contexts
Provides theoretical frameworks used in the analysis of the relationships between games and social-cultural contexts. A detailed study of work conducted on the social-cultural implications of games from across a range of disciplines. There is a focused study of an existing MMoRPG (massively multiplayer on-line role-playing game).

Project
A dissertation of 15,000 – 20,000 words or 10,000 words with practical component delivered in either digital format or as a design document.

This course will enable you to gain a strong background in the theory of analytical and forensic techniques and how to apply them to complex problems such as those encountered at crime scenes. It emphasises the key skills required in this specialised area of science, including good measurement and scientific practice, sample collection and chain of custody, evaluation and interpretation of data, and constructing expert witness reports.

Kingston University has its own scene-of-crime house located on site, which is used to recreate crime scenes and enables you to put your investigative skills into practice. The property's garden is used by the forensic team's archaeologist for field investigations.

Lecturers on the course have wide experience in the forensics sector and many have worked either as forensic scientists or as expert witnesses. They are also actively engaged in forensic research, and are supported by visiting speakers from leading forensic consultancies.

What will you study?

You will explore recent trends in forensic science and learn about the latest analytical devices used, such as atomic and molecular spectroscopic and separation techniques and DNA profiling.

You will look at the role of the forensic scientist and learn how to, for example, investigate and analyse drugs of abuse, fibres and firearms and conduct fire investigation. There is also the opportunity to present expert evidence at a mock courtroom trial in a magistrates' court, examined by Kingston's own trainee lawyers and/or their law lecturers.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to carry out your research project in industry (depending on your results and project availability) or in Kingston University's extensive forensic and analytical laboratories.

Work placement scheme

Kingston University has set up a scheme that allows postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing to include a work placement element in their course starting from September 2017. The placement scheme is available for both international and home/EU students.

-The work placement, up to 12 months; is optional.
-The work placement takes place after postgraduate students have successfully completed the taught portion of their degree.
-The responsibility for finding the placement is with the student. We cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it.
-As the work placement is an assessed part of the course for international students, this is covered by a student's tier 4 visa.

This course is for graduates of biological sciences who want to extend their studies into the professional field of dietetics.

Dietetics is the management of diseases that are amenable to dietary intervention and the prevention of nutrition related disorders. A dietitian influences food selection and eating behaviour of an individual based on specific nutritional or food requirements.

With a clinical and health promotion focus, this course includes three blocks of integrated practice placements of 4, 12 and 12 weeks duration within a hospital and/or primary care setting.

Teaching, learning and assessment

The emphasis is on student-centred learning where your previous knowledge and skills are used to develop your new subject area. Learning activities include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practical classes and are guided using web-based supported materials.

You will also attend three practical placements to enable the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical experience. A variety of assessment methods are used across the course. Normally, there are 12 - 15 students on this course. This ensures that individuals receive excellent support and benefit from sharing their experiences with classmates.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module is equivalent to a notional 150 hours of work which is made up of attendance in class and independent work. The structure of each module is different with different attendance requirements for each timetabled module. Over an average semester the expectation is that during 14 weeks of teaching this will equate to approx. 40 hours per week of student effort (contact classes plus independent study time). Students normally complete the course via a full time route but part-time routes are available and can be discussed with the Programme Leader. All placements are completed on a full-time basis normally Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm.

Links with industry/professional bodies

This course provides eligibility to apply for registration as a dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council. It is also accredited by the British Dietetic Association.

15 credits: Food and Nutrition/ Principles of Nutrition Science/ Clinical Sciences/ Therapeutic Interventions/ Professional Studies/ Professional Practice/ Evaluation of Practice/ Pharmacology and Pharmacogenetics.
You will also carry out practice placements, which you must pass but which do not carry any credit.

If studying for an MSc, you will also complete a dissertation (60 credits).

Careers

Career prospects on completion of the course are varied. Most graduates normally choose to work within the NHS as dietitians. Others will work in health education, health promotion, general practice, private healthcare and government advisory posts. Opportunities also exist in the food and pharmaceutical industries in, for example: food labelling; nutrient profiling; product and recipe development; product evaluation and special diet foods. Some graduates may apply for the opportunity to study for a higher degree (MPhil or PhD).

Academic staff include former forensic biologists, forensic toxicologists, and forensic fibre experts. They continue to maintain close links with the industry including the police and practising forensic scientists. Many of them are well-established within professional forensic science societies and organisations, which directly inform policy and practices within the field.

Teaching And Assessment

Our teaching will give you a solid grounding in all the technical areas that are key to forensic science, while simultaneously developing the higher level of independent thinking and advanced interpretation that is expected at Masters level. To support your learning journey, many of the staff have an ‘open door’ policy which makes it easy to ask questions; it’s also possible to book appointments with them so that you can work through queries about lab work, concepts and theories, and any other aspects of the subject.

Students can also access Return to Scene (R2S) software which provides a 360 degree interactive scan of a crime scene allowing you to perform further analysis in detail after you have left the scene. ​Course Content​​

Forensic Psychology is the practice and application of psychological research relevant to crime, policing, the courts, the criminal and civil justice system, offenders, prison, secure settings, offender management, health and academic settings as well as private practice.

It looks at the role of environmental, psychosocial, and socio-cultural factors that may contribute to crime or its prevention. The primary aim of Forensic Psychology as an academic discipline is to develop understanding of the processes underlying criminal behaviour and for this improved understanding to impact on the effective management and rehabilitation of different groups of offenders in all settings within the criminal justice system.

The first aim of the programme is to provide students with a thorough and critical academic grounding in the evidence relating to environmental, cultural, cognitive and biological factors that may contribute to a wide variety of forms of offending. The programme will encourage students to consider the role and limitations of causal explanations for offending in the development of offender treatments, services and policy.

The second aim of the programme is to introduce students to the basic professional competencies for working in the many settings where forensic psychology is practiced, including skills related to inter-disciplinary working, risk assessment, ethics, continuing professional development, report writing and differences in practice when working with offenders, victims, the courts and the police.

The programme aims to produce Masters degree graduates with the ability to understand the limitations of the conceptual underpinnings of interventions and assessments used in forensic psychology and who are able therefore to engage in critical evaluation of the evidence base upon which their own practice will eventually be based. The programme will specifically avoid providing any formal supervised practice. Its aim is to produce reflective scientist-practitioners who will be ready to engage with the next stage of training (i.e. BPS Stage 2 or HCPC route) towards registration as a Forensic Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Students will complete the following taught modules and will also be required to conduct a novel, supervised research dissertation with participants preferably drawn from a forensic setting:

Research Methods and Design (30 credits)
The aim of this module is to extend students knowledge and experience of quantitative and qualitative research methods. Topics covered include: randomised control trials, ANOVA, ANCOVA, MANOVA, Power analysis, Regression, Non parametric methods, interviews, discourse analysis, grounded theory, reflective analysis and psychometric evaluation.

Forensic Mental Health (20 credits)
This module aims to provide students with a critical examination of the relationship between mental illness, personality disorder, learning disability and criminal behaviour. The module will encourage students to view the mental health needs of offenders in the broadest possible context and to appreciate the inter-disciplinary nature of services available to mentally disordered offenders, difficulties in accessing those services and problems for custodial adjustment presented by specific psychiatric diagnoses

Professional Practice and Offender Management (20 credits)
The focus of this module is the professional practice of forensic psychology. The module builds on the groundwork laid by earlier modules and covers professional skills and the types of interventions that a practicing forensic psychologist may engage in. The topics covered by this module include ethics, report writing, working with other agencies, and working with offenders and victims.

Psychological Assessments and Interventions (20 credits)
This module covers psychology as it may be applied to the reduction of re-offending by convicted criminals. The central focus of the module is the 'what works' literature. A range of topics will be covered demonstrating the broad application of psychology to offender rehabilitation in the Criminal Justice System, and within Wales particularly. These topics include: (1) Offender assessment: risk, need and protective factors (2) factors affecting response to treatment; (3) ethical issues of compulsory treatment; and (4) interventions for a range of offending behaviours.

Theories of Criminal Behaviour (10 credits)
The module aims to examine the contribution made by biological, psychodynamic, evolutionary, cognitive and socio-cultural perspectives to our understanding of the aetiology of criminal behaviour. It will explore psychological theories of a variety of offending behaviours such as: violence, aggression, domestic abuse, sex offending, vehicle crime, fire setting as well as gangs and gangs membership.

Legal Psychology (10 credits)
This module covers psychology as it may be applied to the law, and the central focus of the module is evidence. A range of topics will be covered, demonstrating the broad application of psychology within the legal system. These topics include the interviewing of suspects and witnesses, vulnerable victims, offender profiling and the detection of deception.

Addiction and Psychological Vulnerabilities (10 credits)
This module informs students about different factors that may contribute to psychological vulnerability in offenders and victims. A variety of topics will be covered, including issues around the concept of addictive behaviours, vulnerability and the protection of vulnerable adults, including factors which may increase vulnerability to offending and victimisation.

Learning & Teaching​

​Teaching on the MSc Forensic Psychology Programme is predominantly conducted in small groups and adopts an interactive approach. The Research Methods and Design module and the Dissertation workshops are the only part of the programme which is taught in a larger group of around 40 to 50 students as opposed to between 10 and 20 students on the core modules. As a result teaching involves a range of discussions, activities, evaluations of papers, case studies and role play exercises. The focus within the programme is on both content and key skills to develop specialists in the field of forensic psychology with flexible generic skills. These experiences also help to foster student development and confidence as independent life-long learners.

Student learning is promoted through a variety of learning and teaching methods. These include: lectures, workshops, online learning through the virtual learning environment, Moodle, as well as self directed learning. Each student will have an allocated personal tutor to support them through their period of study.

As this programme is accredited by the BPS, there is a requirement for students to attend at least 80% of the taught sessions for the programme.

Assessment

The MSc is assessed by a range of different coursework assignments – e.g. presentations, reports, essays, reflective reports, academic posters, research proposal. There are no examinations.

Employability & Careers​

An MSc in Forensic Psychology is the first step (stage one) in gaining Chartered Psychologist status with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and Registered Practitioner status with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). The MSc in Forensic Psychology will provide the knowledge base and applied research skills that will provide the foundation for stage two of the chartered process that requires a minimum of two years of full-time supervised practice with an appropriate client group.

- DNA Analysis
You will gain a thorough understanding of DNA analysis and interpretation techniques. There is practical training in a large range of advanced extraction techniques, quantitation, amplification and electrophoresis of DNA, through simulated case-work using our crime scene house and DNA analysis laboratory.

- Analytical Toxicology and Separation Science
You will gain knowledge of the basis and application of a number of novel analytical and extraction techniques such as chiral chromatography, supercritical fluid chromatography, solid phase microextraction and derivatisation techniques. You will also receive high level practical training in ion mobility mass spectrometry, GCMS/MS, LCMS/MS and ICP-OES. There is a particular focus on hair as a matrix for forensic toxicological analysis. You will also be fully trained in experimental design and effective method development.

- Major crime scene analysis
You will learn how to effectively process major and specialist crime scenes through our simulation facilities, and will study novel mapping techniques such as 3D scanning and LIDAR as applied to crime scene investigation.

- Expert witness techniques
To improve your employment prospects, you will also learn about the law as it relates to the forensic scientist and their relationship with the police, lawyers and courts, and the role of the expert witness. You will receive training from professional case working forensic scientists in how to draft expert witness statements and how to give testimony in court.

- Data analysis and Prince 2 qualification
For added benefit, there will be guest lectures from eminent analytical scientists and forensic practitioners, and you will be encouraged to observe courtroom proceedings and visit analytical laboratories. You will receive training in advanced data analysis techniques which is very desirable for potential employers. You will even complete a PRINCE 2 foundation certificate as part of this course, which will stand you in good stead for the management of major projects in laboratories. We conduct research on organisms and processes of commercial and environmental importance, embracing experimental approaches that encompass genomics, molecular biology, biochemistry and physiology. Our research is driven by the desire to develop new biological systems that address health, food, energy and water security. The applied nature of our work has led to the launch of successful spin-out companies, such as Geneius. The commercial applications that result from our research range from natural products discovery and creation of novel antimicrobials and biopesticides to sustainable methods of reducing food spoilage.

Based in the Newcastle Institute for Research on Sustainability (NIReS), our research laboratories include well-equipped molecular laboratories for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) amplification, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and facilities for the production of novel recombinant proteins, including protein engineering. Microbiological laboratories are equipped to Category 2 standard. We have the latest equipment for profiling plant leaf gas exchange and light use efficiency, high performance liquid chromatography, fluorescence and light microscopy and easy access to central facilities for confocal and electron microscopy, DNA sequencing, microarray analyses and proteomics.
