The MA in Professional Communication program consists of two years of study with an annual three-week on-campus residency at the beginning of each year. The MA in Professional Communication program provides a broad understanding of communication as a human activity. Additionally, they will excel in the integration of written and verbal communications with digital technologies.

Students may pursue a thesis-based option or complete a research paper which is smaller in scope but allows for extra coursework.

Graduates of the MA in Professional Communication are professionals with a broad understanding of communication as a human activity. They are leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators in the workplace. They are able to function in environments that require effective team-work, adaptability, strategic planning, intercultural mediation, and a sophisticated understanding of interpersonal discourse. Finally, they excel in communication that requires the integration of superior written and spoken skills with digital technologies.

Graduates of the program will be familiar with government, social, and business organizations and will have an understanding of how information exchange is fundamental to their operation.

Graduates will have:
-Knowledge of both the fundamental and advanced concepts related to human communication and interaction and an ability to communicate successfully (written and oral discourse).
-The ability to use computer-mediated technology to manage the processes required for information retrieval and dispersal.
-Knowledge of the mass media and the information society, including information technology, telecommunications, public policy, publishing, and the cultural industries.
-Knowledge of government, social, and business organizations and an understanding of how information exchange is fundamental to the operation of these.
-An understanding of the management of communication industries and of internal and external corporate communications (public relations, advertising, marketing).
-An understanding of culture, international and intercultural communication, negotiation and conflict management. An ability to communicate effectively in diverse and difficult circumstances.

Flexible Admission

Applicants who do not meet the Standard Admission requirements will be considered for Flexible Admission and assessed as follows:
-Applicants without an undergraduate degree, but more than three years (90 credits) of relevant post-secondary education, should have at least three years of relevant work experience, preferably in a leadership capacity.
-Applicants with 2-3 years (60-90 credits) of relevant post-secondary education should have at least five years of relevant work experience in a leadership capacity.
-Applicants with less than two years of relevant post-secondary education should have at least ten years of high-level, professional communication experience in a leadership capacity.

Whether it is managing social media, dealing with an issue, or building relationships with stakeholders, the role of the corporate communication professional is more complex than ever. This six-month Graduate Certificate will improve your management of internal and external corporate communication, solidify your understanding of stakeholder and public relations and enable you to develop a deeper understanding of social media strategy and governance.

The Graduate Certificate in Professional Communication Management consists of three courses:
-LEAD 580 Leadership, Community and Collaboration in a Complex Environment
-PCOM 633 Strategic Communication Management
-PCOM 520 Social Media Strategy and Governance

You will begin the program with LEAD 580 which consists of an online pre-residency component, a one-week on-campus residency and post-residency online work. The residency allows students to examine a leadership challenge through a live case and explore dimensions of personal and strategic leadership, the dynamics of personal and organizational change, and the communication professional’s role as a catalyst for change. PCOM 520 and PCOM 633 are delivered entirely online including dynamic activities and creative synchronous and asynchronous discussion forums

Who It’s For

This certificate has been designed for communication professionals directly responsible for organizational or corporate communication including managers who wish to strengthen their ability to manage communication strategically and leverage traditional, digital, and social media to strengthen relationships with stakeholders, customers, and other key groups.

Applicants who do not have the formal academic education to qualify for admission may be assessed on the basis of both their formal education and their informal learning, in accordance with the Flexible Admission Policy.

Delivery Model

This program is delivered through our blended model which features a short introductory online period, a five-day on-campus residency and online course work. This flexible model enables students to benefit from an on-campus learning experience while maintaining personal and professional responsibilities.

Residency
The on-campus residency is an intensive period of collaborative study which enables students to become acquainted with RRU, their teachers and their cohort with the aim of preparing students for the rest of the program. The normal schedule for residencies is from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with homework, readings and team assignments completed outside of these hours, so it is recommended that students keep their evenings available for these activities.

Online Learning
The online portion of our Graduate Certificate programs takes place over the Internet. Several different information delivery methods are used, including textbooks, articles, case studies, interactive learning and 'chat' bulletin boards for corresponding with team members. Courses contain assignment due dates and team work, requiring students to plan carefully to meet course timelines.

The two online courses are taken consecutively and each course lasts for a period of 10 weeks. Each course requires a level of effort of approximately 20 hours per week. During the first online course, the amount of time required may be higher as students familiarize themselves with our online learning platform. LEAD 580, the residency course, continues online at the same time as the first online course (EXMN652). This is to complete the final assignment in LEAD580.

This programme allows you to understand and explore just how much we communicate effectively and with each other and how we interact with the wider world in doing so. Communication is vital to success on an individual and organisational level and this programme gives you a multidisciplinary approach to the discipline.  You can discover and fine tune your skills in negotiation, create rapport, provide leadership and interpret various issues to interaction which prevent growth, movement or improvements within an organisation and your business relationships. This is an essential language which you can apply to just about any known business and organisation area. Professional communication can be the difference between the failure or success of projects, organisations and people management, plus how your organisation is seen by the rest of the world.  Specific business areas we look at are in healthcare, law and the energy industry in Aberdeen so that we can utilise our networks but these skills are applicable to any business discipline or institution.

You acquire skills in organisational negotiation, leadership, rapport management and interaction with a range of professional institutions and business organisations. You study a variety of intercultural communications and professional contexts to uncover the true meaning of data in language analysis for example.  The breadth of opportunities for a professional with communications expertise is immense and it can be anything from the more obvious communications, marketing and change management positions to HR, teaching, PR and crisis management.

The Master of Communication (Professional) at Bond, equips graduates with a deeper understanding of theory and practice, necessary for advancement in the communication industry. Graduates of the program are required to submit a Professional Portfolio that details their research and experience in their respective area. About the program

The Master of Communication (Professional) allows students to further their careers in Communication by equipping them with an appropriate mix of theory and practice suited to industry, culminating with a professional segment comprising a professional portfolio, field project and field project report. The Master of Communication (Professional) provides an ideal balance of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, problem solving abilities, interpersonal skills and a high level of written communication. Students will use various analytical tools to examine different areas of communication (e.g. corporate communication, mass communication and semiotics. Through engaging with this unit, students can gain a practical understanding of communication which they can apply to their professional lives.

Analysing Discourse: This unit introduces various analytical tools (e.g. appraisal, speech acts, modality, metaphors, transitivity, cohesion, theme-rheme) which are valuable in the analysis of authentic discourses and texts (e.g. courtroom discourse, social media, educational science texts, newspaper texts, political speeches, advertisements, etc.). The importance of context in any analysis is emphasised.

Dissertation: Students undertake a piece of significant research, reported and analysed in an appropriate manner in an area of professional relevance. A research proposal will be produced in the first instance and supervision from a tutor will be available throughout the process.

2 options:

Technical Communication: This unit is designed to develop students’ ability to communicate technical information effectively to specific audiences. It will examine a range of factors that can influence the effectiveness of communication and provide strategies to overcome communication problems.

Intercultural Communication: This unit deals with intercultural communication issues in a global setting. Students can benefit from an awareness of the various factors including cultural factors, which influence communication in order to improve their own knowledge and practice of communication.

Communication in the Workplace: This unit examines how language is used in workplace settings. Analysing and evaluating a range of spoken, written and digital texts, can help students to reflect on and improve their own knowledge and practice of communication.

Digital Communication and Media Development: This unit is designed to give students a theoretical and a practical knowledge of digital media development and implementation. Students will use a range of software applications to design or develop their own digital marketing applications.

Second Language Acquisition: This unit reviews relevant research on the topic of SLA and builds on students’ previous experience of language learning, applying this to areas such as individual differences and types of learning, as well as to more formal approaches to SLA.

Professional Portfolio: This unit offers students the opportunity to profile their degree to their own professional and/or personal interests, allowing students the chance to study areas not covered elsewhere in the curriculum. Students negotiate an area for study and then pursue this with the support of a supervisor.

The credit system creates a flexible framework in which you can graduate with one of the following awards, depending on the number of credits gained:

We offer three pathways in the Advanced Professional Practice Programme:
- Clinical Pharmacy for General Practice for pharmacists to develop the skills required for working in General Practice.

- Advanced Professional Practice (Pharmacy) incorporating the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Advanced Pharmacy Framework

- Advanced Professional Practice (Open Learn) allows health professionals to choose from our range of modules to create their own pathway

Clinical Pharmacy for General Practice:
NHS England has recently announced their intention to invest £15 million pounds to pilot patient facing roles for clinical pharmacists in GP practices. This is a clear sign of that pharmacists are recognised as health professionals who are able to support patients in the management of long term conditions e.g. by optimising medicines. These roles offer exciting opportunities for pharmacists to develop in this area of practice. . If you wish to work in general practice, it is likely that you will need to be working towards or hold a postgraduate pharmacy qualification that includes Independent Prescribing.
Our new postgraduate pathway 'Clinical Pharmacy for General Practice' allows you to combine your choice of modules from across our Community Pharmacy, Advanced Professional Practice and Prescribing Studies programmes (including the Independent Prescribing course) to meet your own personal learning needs whilst working towards a Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or Masters award.

Advanced Professional Practice (Pharmacy):
The Pharmacy pathway is compatible with the emerging agenda for Advanced and Specialist Practice within the Pharmacy profession and supports the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Faculty Professional Recognition Scheme. Pharmacists who follow this pathway will incorporate the Advanced Pharmacy Framework (APF) (http://www.rpharms.com/faculty-resources/advanced-pharmacy-framework.asp) within their Advanced Professional Practice award and be able to demonstrate competency in all six competency clusters of the framework, ie:

Advanced Professional Practice (Open Learn):
Increasing numbers of pharmacists and other health professionals have a career portfolio that crosses the traditional boundaries of community practice, primary care and secondary care and need a programme of continuing professional development that can meet their specific personal professional development needs.
The Open learn pathway of the APP programme is designed to allow pharmacists and other health professionals, particularly medical and non-medical prescribers working in primary care, choice and flexibility in their progression to Certificate, Diploma and Masters awards to meet their specific professional development needs and advance their professional practice. Pharmacists can choose modules from across the Department of Medicines Management/School of Pharmacy postgraduate programmes’ portfolio, including Community Pharmacy and Clinical (Hospital) Pharmacy.
Pharmacists, medical and nonmedical prescribers can choose modules from the Prescribing Studies programme, including the Independent Prescribing Preparatory Course for Pharmacists, and also modules provided by other Schools within the Faculty of Health, and other Faculties within the University, subject to meeting the specific entry criteria required for individual modules.

Course Aims

Keele's Pg Advanced Professional Practice Programme aims to:
- Equip you with the clinical and professional knowledge base and skills that you have identified as necessary to fulfil and advance your professional practice

- Provide you with a learning programme that meets your personal professional development needs and that will help you apply your knowledge and skills in daily practice

- Encourage you to develop the self-discipline of private study, self-directed learning and reflective practice that will be continued beyond Keele's Programme in your Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

In addition, you will develop valuable practical skills including written and oral communication, and the ability to design a project, collect, analyse and interpret data.

Course Content

MSc in Advanced Professional Practice (Clinical Pharmacy for General Practice):
For the ‘Clinical Pharmacy for General Practice’ pathway you may combine modules from our Prescribing Studies programme, Community Pharmacy programme and Advanced Professional Practice programme to meet your learning needs. A total of 60 credits is required to achieve the Certificate award, 120 credits for the Diploma and 180 credits for the MSc. The Independent Prescribing Preparatory Course for Pharmacists module (60 credits) from the Prescribing Studies programme may only be used towards a Diploma award.

Achievement of the Master’s award requires you to complete the Professional MSc year. The professional MSc year consists of three compulsory modules: Advanced Practice Development (15 credits), Researching and Evaluating your Practice (15 credits) and the Independent Learning Project (30 credits).

MSc in Advanced Professional Practice (Pharmacy):
This pathway links to all the clusters of the Advanced Pharmacy Framework (APF) (http://www.rpharms.com/faculty-resources/advanced-pharmacy-framework.asp) You will study modules to allow you to develop in all six clusters of the APF: Expert Professional Practice; Collaborative Working Relationships; Leadership; Management; Education, Training and Development; and Research and Evaluation.

MSc in Advanced Professional Practice (Open Learn)
For the ‘Open Learn’ pathway, a total of 60 credits is required to achieve the Certificate award, 120 credits for the Diploma and 180 credits for the MSc. The 15 credit Advanced Practice Development module is compulsory, after that you may chose modules from across our programmes to meet your individual learning needs. A maximum of 30 credits per level of award is permitted from any one programme source for Certificate and Diploma awards. The Independent Prescribing Preparatory Course for Pharmacists module (60 credits) from the Prescribing Studies programme may only be used towards a Diploma award.

Teaching & Assessment

The Advanced Professional Practice Programme is designed principally for distance-learning. We provide mainly online distance-learning materials so that you can study where and when it is most convenient for you. Our methods of delivery allow us to revise and update the course quickly to meet your changing needs as a pharmacist.

Students on the 'Pharmacy' Pathway will be required to attend Keele for occasional face to face study days. Students on the 'Open Learn' pathway maybe required to attend Keele, depending on their module choices.

The Advanced Professional Practice Programme is fully supported by a team of experienced, friendly, and approachable academic, administrative and technical staff based at Keele. You’re not on your own! And, don’t forget the network of other pharmacists on the course whom you can contact.

You will require the equivalent of 1-2 days (approximately 10-15 hours) each week to complete your course. Remember that the online nature of our course materials, and the fact that a good proportion of the assessed work focuses on your daily practice, means that you can integrate study and work.

Assessment is entirely by coursework for the Certificate, Diploma and MSc courses. A variety of assessment methods are used such as Practice-Based Assignments that will assess your knowledge, problem-solving skills, and data interpretation skills in relation to application of knowledge to practice, patient care and medicines management. Case Presentations assess your ability to critically appraise the literature and relate published theory to everyday practice. An Audit Project, Practice-Based Assignments, Project Protocol Development and the Independent Study Project Report assess ‘thinking’ and practical skills, and your ability to plan, conduct and report on an investigation. They also assess your ability to critically appraise the literature and relate published theory to everyday practice. Your Reflective Portfolio also assesses your ability to relate theory to practice, and self evaluation of, and reflection on, your own performance and CPD needs.

The nature of the assessments develops your written and oral communication skills. Practical skills and key life/transferable skills are assessed within the methods described above. Each method of assessment is supported by clear criteria for marking; these are explained in the relevant Course Handbooks. The minimum pass mark is 50%.

The summative assessment is supported by a variety of formative assessment activities that include online discussions, formative feedback on elements of the reflective portfolio, contributions to study days and feedback on draft proposals.

Additional Costs

For all programmes you will need regular access to a computer, email and the internet. However apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for our postgraduate programmes, with the exception of those listed below.

Some modules may require that you attend a Webinar. You may find it beneficial to purchase a headset to participate in webinars, however this is not essential if your computer has a built in microphone and speakers.

Some modules may require that you travel to Keele for a study day. There will be additional travel and accommodation costs (if required) to attend any face to face study days.

The Master in International Communication (MIC) is an ambitious double degree programme for those who aspire to an international career as a communication practitioner in senior managerial or consultancy positions, responsible for the external and internal communication of an organisation.

Four universities across Europe, all specialising in communication and public relations in international professional contexts, have joined forces to create this unique joint programme offering you the full benefit of their collective expertise and international networks. This consortium consists of:

• The Netherlands: Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen
• The United Kingdom: Leeds Beckett University
• Italy: IULM University, Milan
• Lithuania: Vilnius University

The MIC offers you the opportunity to study at two universities and graduate with two Master’s degrees and the Geert Hofstede Consortium certificate. The programme starts each September and consists of three semesters (90 European credits). During the first semester you will study at one of the consortium universities, and for your second semester you will study at one of the other consortium universities. During the third semester, you will write your dissertation under the supervision of these two universities.

Career Focused

How is the career perspective built into the MIC programme? Throughout your study, you will analyse and solve real corporate communication problems provided by companies and governmental and non-governmental organisations. While acquiring the necessary expertise, you will at the same time acquire the knowledge and skills you need to be able to work within an international, complex and ever-changing business context. In doing so, you will not only be achieving an academic milestone, you will also be building your business network and complementing your résumé with work experiences.

MIC Curriculum Overview

Semester 1: Core Programme (30 European credits)
The first semester introduces you to the full breadth of the profession. What are the roles and responsibilities of the communication professional in an organisation from a strategic perspective? Which main functional areas are there? How does culture influence communication? What is the relationship between the organisation and its international and intercultural environment? You will complete this semester at one of the consortium universities of your choice.

Semester 2: Specialisations (30 European credits)
During the second semester you will complete a number of specialisations from another consortium universities of your choice. The specialisations are, by definition, in tune with what is happening in the professional field and can change according. The specialisations include:

The graduation Project consists of a master’s dissertation and a personal development portfolio. You must demonstrate mastery of those competences required to obtain the title Master in International Communication. You will choose a professional role and analytically solve a problem for an outside client or stakeholders (working in-house or as a consultant). The result of this project will be based on applied research and the use of an appropriate methodology. Every problem requires a solution from an international or intercultural perspective. The dissertation is completed under the supervision of two universities.

MIC graduate profile

As a graduate of the Master in International Communication you will be an interculturally competent communication professional able to work in a global context. You will be able to anticipate changes and develop, implement and manage sustainable and innovative solutions to communication issues. As a graduate, you will have the skills and knowledge needed to work at managerial or consultancy level.

Based on the MIC Alumni Evaluation conducted in 2015, 91.6% of the MIC graduates have found a job within a year after graduating. Graduates have found jobs as Communications manager, Communications consultant, Director of communication and external relations, Image and communications manager, Marketing & communications executive, Content and media manager, Social media research officer, Senior international relations officer, Events officer and Project manager. Intensive mode delivery

The Master of Project Management (Professional) is delivered in intensive mode. Intensive mode delivery is a compact and time efficient way to complete a postgraduate qualification with minimal impact on professional and personal lifestyles. Subjects are generally delivered over two weekends during the semester with two sets of three-day sessions per subject, usually scheduled Thursday to Saturday (approximately six to eight contact hours per day) with a break of four or five weeks between session one and session two of each subject

Who It’s For

The MA in Intercultural and International Communication program is for strategic and independent-thinking communication managers looking to improve their ability to assist organizations respond to the rapidly changing global environment, as well as individuals with an arts or science undergraduate degree who want to pursue or advance their career in professional communication in the intercultural or international sphere. This program is designed to balance Intercultural Communication with International Communication to better integrate theory and practice.

There are two learning models available for this program, with each model traditionally attracting slightly different students:
-Two-Year Blended Model – The students that lean towards this option tend to have significant professional experience, and have a background as communication managers and leaders.
-18-Month On-Campus Model – Shortly after completing their bachelor degree, the students that tend to take up this model have a solid understanding of the theoretical aspects of communication, with some relevant work experience as communication specialists and liaisons.

Through our Flexible Admission process, significant professional experience in lieu of academic requirements is also considered.

-An understanding of culture, international and intercultural communication, negotiation and conflict management. An ability to communicate ethically in diverse and difficult circumstances.

-Applicants without an undergraduate degree, but more than three years (90 credits) of relevant post-secondary education, should have at least two years of relevant work experience, preferably in a leadership capacity.
-Applicants with 2-3 years (60-90 credits) of relevant post-secondary education should have at least five years of relevant international/intercultural work experience in a leadership capacity.

The nine-credit Graduate Certificate in Strategic Global Communication is comprised of the first three courses of the MA in Intercultural and International Communication residency. The program responds to the call for strategic, intercultural and international, communication skills by non-government organizations (NGOs), public, private, and not for profit organizations.

This program will augment the credentials, skills, and knowledge of global communication professionals. Students will take a systems approach to leading community or organizational development, taking into consideration cultural, governance, and communication principles through the lens of globalization, multi and interculturalism.

Students will have the option of continuing to complete their degree by laddering into the MA in Intercultural and International Communication (on campus and blended) program or the MA in Interdisciplinary Studies program. Students interested in moving on to the MA in Professional Communication will be able to count PCOM 635 as advanced standing credit toward the degree.

Courses

The Graduate Certificate in Strategic Global Communication offers a unique blend of an applied organizational communication challenge with an intercultural communication scholarship, and consists of three courses:
-IICS515 Intercultural Theory and Practice
-PCOM635 Communication for Development and Social Change
-IICS551 Organizational Communication and Culture

You will begin with three weeks of pre-residency online study, followed by a two-week on-campus residency, and finally four weeks of online study post residency.
