Overview

If you already have a bachelors degree in accounting (or are otherwise eligible to enrol in the CPA program) then the Master of Advanced Professional Accounting will allow you to become a qualified practicing accountant.

Our graduates consistently rank higher in grade results in the CPA program than non-Macquarie graduates. We have the largest number of high distinctions every year at the annual CPA awards and the highest pass rate (91 per cent) as of July 2013.

In addition to offering the professional segments of CPA Australia, this course has been endorsed by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) – meaning that our students will be exempted from 14 CIMA papers, effectively taking them to the final part of the CIMA qualification with only one subject to do.

Our Master of Professional Accounting develops advanced professional skills in:
- strategic management accounting
- financial reporting and disclosure, global strategy and leadership
- ethics and governance

You can also conduct a research project and choose from a range of subjects such as forensic accounting, taxation, information systems in business and more.

See the website http://courses.mq.edu.au/international/postgraduate/master/master-of-advanced-professional-accounting

Key benefits

- supports and broadens professional studies: no other educational institution in Australia offers a similar degree
- meets the demands of the professional accounting, corporate governance and finance job markets
- emphasises communication, technical and research skills
- expands your skill set by offering six electives outside core CPA professional accounting units – for example, you can study research and advanced topics in international accounting and corporate governance
- students gain three qualifications upon completion: a postgraduate degree in accounting, membership of CPA Australia (subject to meeting the work experience requirements) and the opportunity to gain CIMA accreditation
- offers research skills and a research project as well as a capstone unit

Suitable for

Are you a graduate who’s eligible to enrol in the CPA program, or already have a bachelors degree in accounting? If so, the Master of Advanced Professional Accounting will give you a professional qualification that’s underpinned by rigorous academic support.

In recent years, the nature of accounting in the global business workplace has moved from being principally the preparation of financial reports to now include the role of business adviser and consultant. Most students seeking graduate placements in the field of accounting will have completed a standard three-year undergraduate degree in this subject.

Otago’s Master of Professional Accounting provides an opportunity for graduates with little or no experience or qualifications in accounting to pursue professional accreditation through an intensive course of study and applied research over a period of 18 months. On completion of the degree students can gain professional accreditation and membership to industry associations such as CAANZ and CPA Australia.

Master of Professional Accounting students will be required to gain mastery of the subject matter and skills at an accelerated rate that is considered appropriate, challenging and manageable for a graduate.
