Product design is about understanding and meeting the needs of people, society, business and the planet, and questioning existing ways of designing and manufacturing things to discover opportunities to design innovative, sustainable products that enrich quality of life and push the discipline into new territory.

You will join a vibrant international community of creative practitioners, from a variety of cultures, to study, learn and develop innovative product design. Students find the programme demanding and stimulating and produce product design of an exceptionally high standard.

Product design is a broad discipline, and we support postgraduate students exploring a wide variety of approaches including opportunities to discover and to solve genuine problems with innovative, research-led solutions; opportunities to raise questions and promote ethical debate through critical and speculative design; and opportunities to experiment in new ways with materials and making processes.

Programme structure

Each semester you will take one theory-based course and one practice-based course. Courses are designed to align with the product design process.

Semester 1 courses focus on introducing a variety of methods of design research and how to apply these methods in practice, within an individual research-led design project.

Semester 2 courses introduce methods and practice of developing new product design.

Semester 3 courses on the MA focus on the theories and practice of communication and exhibition of product design. Those on the MFA introduce deep reflective thinking and practice through a series of events and prototype deployments, which enable you to open up your design work for wider critical input.

Fashion design, wholesaling and retailing have grown dramatically in the last five years, with 10,000 fashion-related jobs. There are 4,600 fashion retail firms in Toronto that generate annual sales of $2.6 billion. Sales have grown by 6.4 per cent in the last year. Employment in the wholesale and retail trade grew by 34.5 per cent or 13,000 jobs in the last five years.

Graduates may find employment in companies that develop, manufacture, market, import, wholesale, distribute or retail fashion apparel and accessories. Employment settings include apparel suppliers, wholesale distribution companies, fashion retail companies, importers and logistics firms, marketing divisions within major retail operations, and up and coming online businesses. Course structure

The course is organised into three-hour blocks of teaching and seminar activities, which are based on specialist reading, research and case studies. Modules are assessed through essays, reports, group work, presentations and examinations.

All of our Marketing MSc courses share six core modules. This specialist route includes one subject-specific module (Digital Marketing), but also shares a range of optional modules which enable you to tailor the course to your own interests and career aspirations.

In the final phase of the course, you will complete a 15,000-word dissertation on a marketing topic of your choice, which will require you to make recommendations for real-life marketing practice. Combining up-to-the-minute theory with practical application, our MSc in Finance will prepare you for a great number of career options. This new masters programme has been devised for 2017 by combining key elements from our current Finance programmes, including our Finance & Investment masters that was ranked 38th by the Financial Times in 2016, in order to give you the opportunity to tailor your learnings to your career aspirations. The second Semester of our masters programme is flexible allowing you to select courses which either combine different areas of finance or which allow you to specialise in one of the three following areas:

  • Corporate Finance
  • Energy Finance and Markets
  • Finance & Investment

This MSc will be the one that is put forward for the FT MSc in Finance rankings in the future.

The School's location in the UK's second largest financial centre allows us to attract visiting speakers including a range of analysts from the key financial institutions and fund management houses. Students are able to interact with leading figures from many major companies; this is particularly evident in the dissertation, which offers an invaluable opportunity to collaborate on a topic that has real, of-the-minute industry relevance.

You will undertake a variety of compulsory modules and a research project. This project will last approximately four months and you will work under the supervision of recognised experts in their field. Our programme is delivered by a group of world-renowned scholars, with expertise and practical experience in international marketing. It is highly international, with a faculty from over 10 countries and a diverse student body from all regions of the world.

The international scope of our marketing programme will appeal to students with or without a marketing background who wish to embark on a career in marketing.
