◾Studio-based, student-centered learning based around design project activities. Students have access to state-of-the-art product design engineering prototyping and manufacturing processes in the PDE workshops at GSA and University of Glasgow.
◾There are increasing pressures, from both existing and emerging world marketplaces, for products which not only respond to the needs of function, user and society, but which can be brought to market ever more rapidly through state-of-the-art development and manufacturing processes. Product Design Engineering is the development phase of product design within the creative industries, and this qualification supports graduates in taking leadership and management roles in this sector. Product Design within the Creative Industries refers to the design of user operated products, usually of a technology and electronic base.

This course aims to help equip graduates to take responsibility for the development phase of creative product design providing them with the opportunity to develop team leadership and decision-making skills. Students will also have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the material, production and product function aspects of creative product design and develop deeper levels of understanding of engineering and electronics, building on hard science approaches as well as application of industry level computer aided design packages (CAD) and rapid prototyping techniques (RP).

What will you study?

This programme is structured to provide you with the latest developments in this still-evolving discipline, and focuses on providing you with hands-on experience of the latest computing applications throughout the entire product development cycle. The course covers a range of topics from 3D solid modelling and the techniques required to extend the capabilities of a 3D modelling system to gaining practical and theoretical knowledge of analytical computer tools by using finite element analysis (FEA) techniques. It also examines the importance of modern materials in advanced manufacturing processes, as well as computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and application of rapid prototyping technologies. Additionally, the programme enables you to gain the entrepreneurship, management and business skills necessary to take on leadership roles in major product design engineering projects.

The project dissertation challenges you to investigate a theoretical area in depth and also to undertake a real-world product design problem-solving project.

Work placement scheme

Kingston University has set up a scheme that allows postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing to include a work placement element in their course starting from September 2017. The placement scheme is available for both international and home/EU students.
-The work placement, up to 12 months; is optional.
-The work placement takes place after postgraduate students have successfully completed the taught portion of their degree.
-The responsibility for finding the placement is with the student. We cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it.
-As the work placement is an assessed part of the course for international students, this is covered by a student's tier 4 visa.

Engineering design is the application of engineering principles, the experience of making, and use of mathematical models and analysis. The design and production of complex engineering products often require the use of embedded intelligence and detailed engineering analysis involving mechanical, electronic and control functions. Advanced theoretical knowledge and a wide range of computer driven tools, methods and methodologies are essential for this process – and the course provides graduates with these essentials.

Course Content

Continued design of modern complex products demands advanced knowledge in mechanical, electronic, manufacturing and control engineering disciplines and human factors in design, and an ability to use advanced engineering software packages, integrating application experience and a capacity to carry on learning.

The Advanced Engineering Design MSc has been developed to produce design engineers who can meet these demands. It contains six taught modules where advanced multi-disciplinary theory is taught. As part of the course, six engineering software packages are also taught. In order to give an integrating application experience in an industrial setup, 'Design Experience', a group project module with an industry, has been included as part of the curriculum.

The dissertation is aimed at providing training in carrying out an in-depth engineering task on a self-learning basis. By the end of the course you will become a confident design engineer equipped with high quality and advanced knowledge and skills to work on design tasks in an advanced computer assisted environment.

The MSc in Integrated Product Design course focuses on the design of innovative products, emphasising the balance between the interest of users, industry and society. It covers the whole design process, integrating all aspects relevant to product development, in particular global new product design.

It meets industrial demand by integrating technology, management, aesthetics, environmental sustainability, ergonomics, marketing, business and design methods – to produce highly qualified and sought after designers able to cope with the challenges the global economy presents.

Specifically, the course aims to:

Provide an integrated programme of study across a broad range of knowledge and skills in product/industrial design
Develop design and technology research skills related to the design process through practicing applied research
Develop advanced design skills, enabling graduates to practice as an independent design professional and to further develop design and professional skills in product/industrial design engineering
Nurture scientific rigour as well as creativity to enable graduates to follow a successful career in product/industrial design and assume leadership roles in national and international companies and institutions.

Aims

The course provides an integrated approach and promotes advanced studies in design theory, creativity and aesthetics, innovation methods, advanced design techniques, human factors and applied ergonomics, engineering, material and production science, sustainability and research methods.

Course Content

The first term includes three taught modules worth a total of 45 credits plus one double module of 30 credits which continues into the second term alongside three further modules. The thick module, Professional Design Studio, will include guest lectures, research seminars and group or individual project. The projects can be based on design research or product/industrial design.

The ‘Design Futures’ module will introduce the importance and potential value of future foresight techniques and develop a vision of the future and critically evaluate its implications for design, innovation and enabling technology.

The ‘Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing Techniques’ module will introduce CAD and graphics based design modelling, rendering techniques and tools, product design simulation techniques and tools, rapid prototyping and manufacturing techniques.

For the final four months of the programme (June to September), students can either continue their projects to greater depth as their dissertation project, or undertake a new subject. Students are encouraged to form industrial links as part of this project.

Work in each module is predominantly assessed through practical project assignments including both individual and group work. Semester 1 (October-January):
The first semester introduces the fundamental principles of new product design and development, advanced design and innovation techniques, and computer aid packages for design.

- Five taught units
- Includes coursework involving laboratory or small project sessions
- Typically each unit consists of 22 hours of lectures, may involve a number of hours of tutorials/exercises and laboratory activity and approximately 70 hours of private study (report writing, laboratory results processing and revision for examinations)

Semester 2 (February-May):
In Semester 2 you will study both technical specialist units and project-based units. You will develop your professional understanding of engineering in a research and design context. You will gain analytical and team working skills to enable you to deal with the open-ended tasks that typically arise in practice in present-day engineering.

- The semester aims to develop your professional understanding of engineering in a business environment and is taught by academic staff with extensive experience in industry
- Group projects in which students work in a multi-disciplinary team to solve a conceptual structural engineering design problem, just as an industrial design team would operate
- Individual project preliminary work and engineering project management units

Summer/Dissertation Period (June-September):
- Individual project leading to MSc dissertation
- Depending on the chosen area of interest, the individual project may involve theoretical and/or experimental activities; for both such activities students can use the department computer suites and well-equipped and newly refurbished laboratories for experimental work. Course details

This programme (subject to validation) involves 180 credits of study at Level 7 with a flexibility to meet your individual development needs. The core modules in advanced engineering design will be complemented by negotiated study options and a 60 credit individual dissertation project.

The advanced engineering design modules will allow you to explore systems design, product modelling, design management, and the strategies and tactics of modern design practice. Through a project-based learning approach, you'll have the opportunity to develop competency in computer aided engineering and design optimisation tools. The negotiated study options allow you to deepen your knowledge of an engineering topic and/or professional practice, whilst the dissertation project will allow you to use your innovation and creativity to develop solutions to complex problems.

The MSc Engineering Management course has been specifically designed to allow you to update, extend and deepen your understanding of engineering and management.

You will build on your current knowledge of subjects such as solid modelling and prototyping, computer aided design and engineering data analysis, whilst developing management and entrepreneurial skills that will enhance your career opportunities within engineering and the broader business environment.

In the second year, for one semester, you’ll undertake an internship, study in another country or join a research group. This valuable experience will enhance your employability and further develop your theoretical and practical skills.

Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time in one of the many companies/industries with which we have close links. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to find and secure a suitable position but ultimately we are in the hands of the employers who are free to decide who they take into their organisation.

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Engineering, Physics and Materials Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Please note that this option may require you to obtain a visa for study in the other country.

Teaching And Assessment

The structure of this course has been designed to focus on engineering issues and processes, and how they apply to those in management positions.

This course incorporates six taught modules: research methods, project, programme and portfolio management; project change, risk and opportunities management; technology entrepreneurship and product development; engineering management data analysis and sustainable development for engineering practitioners.

Throughout the duration of this course you will build core skills in key areas such as management, business, finance and computing, providing you with a strong understanding of the day-to-day processes that underpin the smooth running of a successful organisation.

This course is primarily delivered by lectures and supporting seminars such as guided laboratory workshops or staffed tutorials. Assessments are undertaken in the form of exams, assignments, technical reports, presentations and project work. The Advanced Practice semester will be assessed via a report and presentation about your internship, study abroad or research group activities.

What is the MA in Interaction Design about?

Interaction design focuses on shaping products for people’s use and behaviour and includes designing interactive digital products, environments, visual communication systems and services. Interaction design is the synthesis and imagining of things as they might be, rathere than focusing on satisfying the needs and desires of the end user. This programme is specifically designed for honours graduates in product and industrial design, multimedia and game design, visual communication design, architecture, engineering and other design related fields. This Masters programme has been developed by IT Carlow in consultation with industry and is delivered through combination of the self-directed learning and graduate research within the structutred environment of a taught programme. This dynamic educational environment seeks to provide a framework for interdisciplinary and peer learning and equiry, which facilitates, promotes and leads the interaction between practice and theory. Dedicated studio space. Cardiff School of Art and Design offers an extensive range of spaces, workshops and equipment, creating a vibrant and creative learning environment, within a new purpose designed building and a fully renovated extension. Workshop and technical facilities include a foundry; and access to other workshops across the full range of Art and Design disciplines. Membership of the Fablab is included in the indicative coursework costs below. Cardiff School of Art and Design has a wide range of tools and equipment for use by students; necessary workshop training in their use includes access to materials used as part of timetabled workshop inductions. You also have access to and use of recycled materials within workshop areas.

Assessment

For each module, assessment is as follows:
- APD401M Product Development Principles & Practice (20 Credits) 6000 word equivalent assignment. This will normally be a written assignment.

- APD403M Sustainability Issues in Design for Production (20 Credits) 6000 word equivalent. This module will typically be assessed via a design project. A proportion of the assignment may however be awarded for written or presentatio​n work.

- MAA7001 Research Methods in Art & Design (20 Credits) Written submission, plus seminar presentation, typically 3,000 words plus a 10-20 minute presentation.

- APD405M User Testing & Evaluation (20 Credits) 6000 word equivalent. This module may be linked with others in order to provide a design project vehicle. In any case it will involve practical exercises and a proportion if not all of the assignment may be awarded for written or presentation work.

- APD406M Form Shape & Colour (20 Credits) 6000 word equivalent. This project is likely to be assessed through practical design activity, although a proportion of the assignment may be awarded for written or presentation work.

- APD407M Major Project (60 Credits). 18,000-word equivalent. Performance will be measured using the Final Report, Formal Presentation, Viva Voce examination and final product. Of the marks that are available for the project the allocation of the marks to each of the measures is as follows:

Final Report: 40%

Final Product (prototype): 40%

Formal Presentation: 5%

Viva Voce: 15%

- APD408M(A) Industrial Placement (20 Credits) 6000 word equivalent. A 3000 word ( maximum) report reflecting on the student’s experience within the professional working environment. A reflective placement Logbook (or Blog equivalent) recording critical reflections on events, activities and experiences. Important Note: Because of the difficulties of assessment in the workplace and the potential for disparity of treatment, this module is not awarded a mark other than “Pass” or “Fail”.

Support will be available through weekly small group seminars (normally no more than 16 students per group), exploring the theme of lectures and allowing students to clarify their understanding.

These sessions may also be workshops where practical demonstrations, involving student participation, are run. This may include, for example, communal writing or small group discourse analysis. Weekly tutorials will also be available.

Employability & Careers

Your year(s) of study with us enable you to develop professional contacts, observe how successful practitioners make their living, and hone your skills and ideas for commercial and professional advantage. Such cross-disciplinary collaborations prepare you for a world where you will inevitably work with people from all walks of life. Your live projects and assessments will get you accustomed to the importance of deadlines and working to specific briefs and tight specifications.

Over the next few years, CSAD will be developing opportunities for incubation of business proposals from its graduates and postgraduate training to get business opportunities up and running.

All students’ are expected to complete a portable ‘record of achievement’ and use their PDP to support employability and life-long learning, normally in the form of a blog, that integrates opportunities for self-reflection in programmes in order to help them develop as effective and confident learners.

This course incorporates six taught modules: research methods, project, programme and portfolio management; project change, risk and opportunities management; technology entrepreneurship and product development; engineering management data analysis and sustainable development for engineering practitioners.

Throughout the duration of this course you will build core skills in key areas such as management, business, finance and computing, providing you with a strong understanding of the day-to-day processes that underpin the smooth running of a successful organisation.

This course is primarily delivered by lectures and supporting seminars such as guided laboratory workshops or staffed tutorials. Assessments are undertaken in the form of exams, assignments, technical reports, presentations and project work.

On completion of all taught modules you will undertake a substantial piece of research around a subject of particular interest to you and your own career aspirations.

Learning Environment

Throughout the duration of your course you will have access to our dedicated engineering laboratories that are continuously updated to reflect real-time industry practice.

Our facilities include mechanical and energy systems experimentation labs, rapid product development and performance analysis, materials testing and characterisation, 3D digital design and manufacturing process performance.

You will be given the opportunity to get hands-on with testing, materials processing, moulding, thermal analysis and 3D rapid manufacture to help you create the products and systems required for the projects you will work on during your course.

Your learning journey will also be supported by technology such as discussion boards and video tutorials. You will also participate in IT workshops where you will learn how to use the latest industry-standard software.

Videos of lectures will on many occasions be made available through Panopto video software to further support teaching delivery.

The programme has the aim of preparing a highly qualified designer able to take on a design role concerning the product service system (considered as a blend of products, communication strategies, services and spaces used by profit and non profit entities –enterprises, institutions, associations, etc.- to represent themselves in an integrated form to their reference market) in international contexts in which the individual innovation is no longer sufficient to combat increasing competitivity. This MSc programme (open to approx. 40 Italian and 40 international students) offers an interdisciplinary course held in a multicultural context that leads to a professional qualification internationally accredited.
A “product-service-system” is defined by a blend of products, communication strategies, services and spaces. The center of the product-service-system is represented by people (users, suppliers, employees or stakeholders) who interact with the multiple design components. The approach to design is strongly interdisciplinary and provides participants with a wide set of design tools, some basics of projects management, logistics, supply chain management, communications and media.
