The business of hydrocarbon energy supply remains one of the most fundamental aspects of global commerce and natural resources law in the modern era. It is not limited to exploitation of petroleum but encompasses many different aspects of law and business, from protecting the intellectual property rights of new oil and gas technology, to complex joint venture contracts, and to compensation regimes for pollution liability.
The LLM in Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law is modular, with students required to accumulate 180 credits to graduate. In appropriate circumstances, an Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law student may graduate with a merit or distinction. Each programme is divided into two parts: Part I consists of 4 taught modules each weighted at 30 credits.
Following the successful completion of the taught modules, Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law students proceed to Part II, which is composed of two projects (LLM Research Projects). At least one of the LLM Research Projects must be written in the area of International and Transnational Aspects of Oil and Gas Law or Oil & Gas Law: Contracts and Liabilities. The LLM in Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law Research Projects will customarily be researched and written up over the summer period and are designed to enable LLM in Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law students to develop their research skills.

Employability has always been on the top of our agenda. To that end we organise a number of initiatives for enhancing our LLM in Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law students’ employability. These include:
Teaching is conducted in small classes and our students always find an opportunity to participate in discussions and put their views across. Teaching in the LLM in Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law modules is supported by the use of our Blackboard virtual learning environment, which facilitates online teaching and learning. Through Blackboard, students have access to course materials, handouts, and lecture notes, as well as shared areas for group work, online discussions, and exchanging ideas with fellow students.
All LLM in Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law modules are assessed by a combination of coursework and examination, with an equal weighting of 50% normally given to each component in the final total assessment.
Ole Ollmann (Germany – LLM in Oil and Gas Law, now Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law)
Whilst working on his dissertations, Ole was offered an internship at Hapag-Lloyd AG, one of the oldest and most respected shipping companies in Germany and a leading globally operating container line. During his three month internship, Ole was involved in the day to day bunker procurement and bunker trade practice in the bunkering department. Ole was offered valuable inside into oil markets, trading and hedging practice as well as procurement strategies of a large container line. He procured bunker fuels for ships, prepared the necessary documentation and also dealt with bunker claims.
In addition, he dealt with general matters of the relevant law, such as general terms and conditions of sale and charter party terms pertaining to bunker fuel. Ole found his internship a great experience which gave him an opportunity to put into practice the knowledge gained during the LLM program. After completion of his internship, Ole moved to a permanent position in the chartering / operations department of a specialised tanker owner and operator.
Construction law and practice affects stakeholders working across the international construction sector. This course will provide you with the legal knowledge and commercial awareness required to perform your current role more effectively or to move into a specialist role in construction law.
You will examine the responsibilities of employers, contractors and construction professionals together with the problems raised by the complexities of construction, design liability and insurance. Construction contracts and the law underpinning them, together with a wide range of standard form contracts are studied to assess and manage risk. You will also study the complex issues arising from the multiparty nature of the construction process and the particular challenges of international construction, together with the uncertainties that can arise from the passage of time and latent defects.
The full masters award is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), allowing exemption from their academic entry requirements, as well as ensuring that you are educated to the highest industry standards.

This course is studied part-time by distance learning. Admission onto the course is in September.
The Masters award consists of four core modules. The PgDip requires the completion of all four core modules. The PgCert requires completion of two core taught modules. All modules are delivered over a 15 week period and are assessed entirely through coursework.
DISTANCE LEARNING STUDY
A 30 credit taught module is studied in each semester for the first sixteen months. Assessment of these modules is driven by real-world problems aligned to your workplace and job role. Teaching is based around a virtual learning environment supported by interactive online sessions. In the final two semesters you undertake a dissertation worth 60 credits which is also delivered online and incorporates extensive tutor engagement and support.
To help you fit your studies around your work, the course is taught via distance learning. This takes the form of an online learning environment supplemented by constant support from experienced tutors.
During your studies, you’ll log on for weekly online tutorials, which will be led by tutors and provide the opportunity for interaction with your fellow students. Sessions are usually delivered at UK evening times, and these tutorials are archived in case you miss one. Learning is designed to equip you for the real-world problems that you are likely to meet in your job.

He has undergone world class training in negotiation (in the Harvard Business School), membership and chairing of dispute boards on major international infrastructure projects (by the international Dispute Resolution Board Foundation based in Seattle) and mediation (by CEDR, the London-based international Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution).

Students will have the opportunity to participate in the MBA business event (Brussels in 2014/15) in their first year. The MBA business event is optional and the cost should not exceed £250 for flights and accommodation (If travelling from the UK). Students normally allow an additional £250 for their expenses.
Please Note: Additional fees, over and above your course fees, will be payable for the optional elements, for example for travel and accommodation for the Business Event or by the examination or membership bodies for membership and assessments associated with the qualifications.
The programme can be undertaken anywhere in the world, as we use facilitative technologies to enable your engagement with the course team, fellow students and course materials. Normally, you will complete three blocks of 14 weeks study. You will be expected to interact with the course team in online activities and in significant additional study, learning and networking and to engage online in development activities associated with your achievement of the professional body memberships and awards. After the completion of the taught modules you will have a further nine months to complete your Business Research Project. The distance learning programme normally runs twice a year with September and February starts.
Per module you should expect to spend between 10/20 hours per week engaging with online activities and study through NILE as well as self-directed study time.
The programme has a combination of assessment involving practical work, essays, reports, case studies and examinations. The Business Research Project Procurement is a 15,000 word independent research project.
