The Melbourne Law Masters is a graduate law program of the highest quality, available to law and non-law graduates.
Melbourne Law School’s specialisation in private law offers an opportunity to develop a deep understanding of core areas of law that are fundamentally important to commercial practice. The subjects cover current issues and developments in areas that are vitally important to lawyers involved in commercial litigation and commercial transactions, including contract law, the law of torts, equity, restitution, trusts and remedies.

Intensive subjects are ideal for busy professionals and provide an excellent opportunity to immerse in the subject content.
Subjects are typically taught over five days, either from Monday – Friday or Wednesday – Tuesday, excluding the weekend. This format enables students from interstate or overseas to fly to Melbourne to attend class.
Semester-length subjects are generally taught for two hours in the evening each week during the semester.
Comprehensive reading materials are provided approximately four weeks prior to the commencement of an intensive class. It is expected that students undertake substantial reading before classes begin. This programme offers you the opportunity to obtain an advanced qualification that is both academically rigorous and professionally beneficial. Drawing on both the civil and common-law traditions, it combines the comparative study of the modern development in key areas of private law, and also the dynamics of European harmonisation initiatives. It is particularly suited to those who have studied a range of private law subjects at undergraduate level, although it is also open to those whose undergraduate law degree has combined other specialisations.
You must complete 180 credits of study – 60 credits are taken in the compulsory dissertation and the remaining 120 credits are taken in taught courses. Your courses will be led by members of the Law School academic community.

The dissertation is a major individual research project. Guidance will be given on choosing a research topic, research techniques and the style and presentation of the finished document. Classes in research skills are provided as part of the dissertation module. Students will have their own carefully selected dissertation tutor whose role is to help them plan and successfully execute this key part of the programme.
We offer a one-year, full-time modular course. It is taught with ten, one-week attendance periods at the University. The full-time programme starts in September each year.

Future career paths are likely to be within central governmental agencies, local/regional government, NGOs or the private sector. In the private sector, some graduates will work for major international construction companies who are seeking to develop their international market in emerging economies. Others may work for construction firms and construction clients who are employing those international firms. There are many opportunities to make a difference in the public and private sectors, especially at the interface between different emerging economies and with the more developed countries.
The International Law programme offered at Aberdeen differs from International Commercial Law with Professional Skills and Dissertation within the optional modules you take. There is less emphasis on intellectual property law and commercial business law and more emphasis on International Law in a general sense internationally. You study areas such as family law, human rights, criminal law and humanitarian law plus private laws in many cases within your options so you can potentially specialise within your choices. You also do combine some area of commercial law such as arbitration, energy and environmental law and international trade and finance law which can be applied to individuals and businesses, charities and NGOs plus some level of cultural property law. These could be options if you want to mix your modules a bit within the first and second semester. If you want to get the most from your Master's degree and have a range of specialisms in international private and commercial law this may be an ideal solution due to the range of modules to choose from.
The LLM in International Law offers a range of courses covering both public and private international law. It enables students to undertake advanced legal research and writing in this field and educates students in the analysis of international treaties and case law with an international law dimension.
