Why study at Dundee?

Building on the success of the Joint LLM in International Commercial Law, Dundee Law School has established a partnership with the University of Toulouse to run a joint LLM programme in Comparative and European Private International Law.

This is a topic of increasing practical importance in the era of globalisation - where to litigate, what law should be applied, and when can foreign judgments be recognised. This unique programme will explore the contrasting approaches of the common law and civil law worlds.

In the Spring semester (January-March) students will undertake private international law modules at Dundee, and then over the summer a dissertation.

In September, students will go to Toulouse to undertake a range of private international law modules, all taught through English.

Teaching and learning

This course is taught by leading academics as well as visiting practitioners including barristers and solicitors who work in private practice and in legal departments of major companies.

Assessment

All modules are structured as ten weekly two-hour seminars which comprise both lectures as well as interactive tutorials. All modules are supported by our online learning platform - Moodle. Assessment is by way of coursework which comprises 100% of the final mark in each module. Each module carries the same weight in terms of the overall qualification.

You will be allocated a dedicated supervisor for your dissertation who will help you develop a specific topic and provide support in terms of resources, content and structure.

Modules

As with all LLM specialisms at City, University of London, you may take either five modules and a shorter dissertation (10,000 words) or four modules and a longer dissertation (20,000 words). All modules are of the same duration and are taught per term (September – December or January – April) rather than the whole academic year. If you take four modules you will take two per term in each term and if you take five modules you will have three in one term and two in the other. Dissertations are written during the summer term when there are no classes.

In order to obtain this specialism, you must choose at least three modules from within this specialism and write your dissertation on a subject within the specialism.

The MSc Construction in Emerging Economies is highly innovative in its design and specifically focused on the needs of countries undergoing rapid urbanisation. Many such countries contain urban conurbations with a GDP in excess of some developed countries, but at the same time they also possess vast rural areas which remain poor and underdeveloped. The construction sector in such economies is invariably at the nexus of sustainable development.

The distinctive focus is on countries undergoing rapid urbanisation, placing construction-related knowledge within the economic, social and developmental contexts in emerging economies.

The course is aimed at early-to-mid-career professionals with an interest in the role of construction in emerging economies. The course will appeal to those seeking to bring about practical changes in a range of different national contexts. It will also appeal to those working with international NGOs who require a better understanding of construction in a developmental context.

The course content reflects the unique expertise available at the University of Reading, including our extensive international experience. Dissertation

The dissertation is a major individual research project. Guidance will be given on choosing a research topic, research techniques and the style and presentation of the finished document. Classes in research skills are provided as part of the dissertation module. Students will have their own carefully selected dissertation tutor whose role is to help them plan and successfully execute this key part of the programme.

Full-time

We offer a one-year, full-time modular course. It is taught with ten, one-week attendance periods at the University. The full-time programme starts in September each year.

Flexible part-time

We also offer a two-year, part-time modular course. It is taught with ten, one-week attendance periods at the University. The duration of the flexible route is strongly recommended as two years, but this is not fixed. The flexible course starts in September each year.

The resulting Master’s Degree in English Language Teaching aims to train professionals to teach English for both general and specific purposes. The degree is a combination of professional and research tracks, and it is designed for national and international graduates, with or without experience, who wish to work professionally in the field of English language teaching.

Student Profile

The Master’s Degree is designed mainly for students with a background in English studies, and such related fields as modern languages, culture and communication, translation and interpretation, or schoolteachers specializing in foreign languages. Nevertheless, the Master’s Degree is also open to people holding some sort of official university degree (bachelor’s degree, pre-Bologna bachelor’s degree or 3-year diploma), or an equivalent that may not be directly related. The MPhil in Technology Policy is an intensive, nine-month professional practice master's programme designed for people with a background in science or engineering who are interested in developing the skills needed to meet the challenges of integrating technology, management, economics and policy. Although the programme straddles the boundary of business and government and has a strong common core taken by all students on the programme it features two main pathways: public sector and private enterprise.

The programme's focus is on business-government interactions, and its aim is to provide students with both the wider political and institutional context and the analytical skills delivered by Cambridge Judge Business School faculty working in operations, strategy and, most especially, in economics and policy. The MPhil in Technology Policy programme provides the context and skills needed to cope with the rapidly evolving environment in many technology-rich sectors, including information and communications technology, defence and aerospace, energy and electricity, manufacturing, transport and logistics, pharmaceuticals and health. The channels of communication between government and industry are often weak and there can be significant difficulties in spanning the divide. Format

The programme is centred on six core courses, assessed by examination. In addition, students will take a total of six electives: two skills or sectorial electives; two stream electives (public sector or private enterprise); and two open electives (drawn from other skills, sectorial, and stream electives; or from a select list of other electives). During the Lent and Easter terms students will produce a written report for their Final Group Project, which will be based on a placement at a major public or private sector technology-intensive organisation. The Final Group Project is double-weighted.

The Final Group Project is based on a placement at a major public or private sector organisation.

Assessment

Students will undertake a Final Group Project (FGP). The FGP will be linked to Cambridge Judge Business School research groups and based on a placement at a major public or private technology-intensive organisation. Assessment is based on a 12,000 word final report produced under faculty supervision.

Students are assessed by formal examinations, term papers, regular written assignments, and some assessment of class participation (including bulletin board ‘discussion’). Some team grading is used, as appropriate. Assessment aims to measure assimilation and application of theory and to gauge experiential learning.

The six core courses will be assessed mainly by written examination.

A presentation forms part of the Final Group Project assessment. Presentations may also be required on certain electives, at the discretion of individual lecturers.

The International Law programme offered at Aberdeen differs from International Commercial Law with Professional Skills and Dissertation within the optional modules you take. There is less emphasis on intellectual property law and commercial business law and more emphasis on International Law in a general sense internationally. You study areas such as family law, human rights, criminal law and humanitarian law plus private laws in many cases within your options so you can potentially specialise within your choices. You also do combine some area of commercial law such as arbitration, energy and environmental law and international trade and finance law which can be applied to individuals and businesses, charities and NGOs plus some level of cultural property law. Three of the core four teaching staff are Environmental Health Practitioners who bring many combined years of experience gained working across local government, public health, health promotion, private consultancy, advocacy and specialist divisions of the Health Protection Agency (Chemical Hazards and Poisons Division and health emergency planning) to equip you with specialist knowledge and skills that are at the forefront of the subject.

Our staff are research-active and hold advanced degrees in complimentary subjects (e.g. environmental engineering and sustainable development, and public health) and memberships to professional organisations (including the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, Emergency Planning Society, etc.) to ensure they are aware of the latest trends, research and developments within this field.

This course is focused upon the five core CIEH subject areas: food safety, housing and health, health and safety, environmental protection and public health.

Delivering an excellent postgraduate experience you will be offered the opportunity to question and reflect on how the world around us can impact on public health, whilst developing the skills and knowledge necessary to understand these risks and how to intervene and manage them effectively.

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Geography and Environmental Studies Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. About the program

Bond University’s Master of Occupational Therapy program is designed to produce highly competitive graduates with comprehensive clinical skills as well as possessing a solid business acumen and research experience. It is the first Occupational Therapy Masters in Australia to offer you the opportunity to complete a clinical research project or undertake business electives in preparation for a career in private practice. Structure, teaching and assessment

All MA courses follow a similar pattern with two core modules (1 and 4) and two subject-specific modules (2 and 3).

Teaching and learning takes place via lectures, seminars, tutorials, discussion, active inquiry and investigations. Regular meetings with a personal tutor support and encourage your learning and understanding.

A weekly tutorial and a Study of Education course accompanies the taught modules.

There are no formal written examinations and assessment is by coursework and a 15–20,000-word dissertation.

Content

This programme is non-modular, but will include: Developmental Psychology; Assessment and Intervention; The Education of Children with Additional Needs; Group Training for Support Staff; Professional Issues and over 300 days of supervised professional practice placements.

Teaching

A mix of placement, private study and teaching from tutors. Your usual weekly pattern will be:

Year 1: two days teaching, one day private study, two days work placement.

Year 2: one day teaching, one day private study, three days work placement.

Year 3: one day teaching or research, one day private study, three days work placement.
