The programme provides a mix of business context with core security, trust and privacy issues that challenge the IT sector. The course builds on previous skills in computer science, to strengthen understanding of this emerging area.

As well as studying themes such as trust and identity and forensic investigation, security techniques and information, network and cyber security, you will gain an understanding of the e-Commerce and business environment. This combined business/security approach provides valuable training for interacting with organisations, and understanding their business functions in a deeper context.

Using case based analysis, you will have the opportunity to learn about forensic approaches to investigation across multiple platforms.

• Practitioner-led modules integrate the latest research ideas with current best practice

• Students will have access to our Cybersecurity and Forensics Laboratory. The 40 PCs are able to host virtual machines and can be used to carry out a number of forensic investigations. They are connected to an isolated, local network which can be configured to better explore the security challenges facing today's professionals.

Structure

Teaching

The School of Computer Science and Informatics has a strong and active research culture which informs and directs our teaching. We are committed to providing teaching of the highest standard and received an excellent report in the most recent Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) review.

This particular course builds on our research strengths in cybersecurity. Many of the case studies used in the course build on our existing research and our work with industry (and other organisations in law enforcement).

Modules are delivered through a series of either full- or half-day contact sessions, which include lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and laboratory classes.

Most of your taught modules will have further information for you to study and you will be expected to work through this in your own time according to the guidance provided by the lecturer for that module.

Support

At the start of your course you will be allocated a Personal Tutor who is an academic member of staff in the School and serves as a point of contact to advise on both academic and personal matters in an informal and confidential manner.

Your Personal Tutor will monitor your academic progress and supply references in support of any job applications that you make.

Your Personal Tutor will monitor your progress throughout your time at university and will support you in your Personal Development Planning. You will see your Personal Tutor at least once each semester.

Outside of scheduled tutor sessions, our Senior Personal Tutor runs an open door policy, being on hand to advise and respond to any personal matters as they arise.

Feedback on coursework may be provided via written comments on work submitted, by provision of ‘model’ answers and/or through discussion in contact sessions.

The Institute of Computer and Communications Law (ICCL) offers online distance learning programmes that leads to the award of a Queen Mary University of London, Postgraduate Certificate in Computer and Communications Law.

The programme draws on our established teaching and research expertise in IT law, e-commerce law, communications law, computer law and media law.

Law as a subject is particularly suitable for online learning in that it is primarily text-based, so delivery of teaching materials is not restricted by bandwidth limitations. Most of the relevant materials for computer and communications law are available in digital format from databases such as Lexis and Westlaw to which you gain access through your Queen Mary Student account. We use a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) as a platform to deliver clear course structures, teaching materials and to create interactive courses. Your e-learning experience is enhanced by tutorials using discussion boards, blog postings and live chat for class discussions and question and answer sessions. We have designed the course to allow as much interaction and feedback between students and tutors as possible. Your understanding will be deepened by discussing your reading with fellow students and your course tutor and carrying out short tasks related to the course. We also use audio and audio-visual presentations. You will not need to have access to a local law library, a basic internet connection and browser is all that is needed to do the course.

Flexible Learning

Completion of the Certificate takes one to two years, part-time and is tailored for the needs of busy practitioners or other lawyers who would like to obtain knowledge in the computer and communications law field. Students may switch to the Diploma (120 credits) or the LLM (180 credits) after completing the Certificate.

Programme structure
You can study Computer and Communications Law to Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or LLM level, by distance learning.

The programme is tailored for you if you wish to obtain a specialist Certificate in Digital Media Law, Certificate in IT or IP Law, Certificate in E-commerce Law or a Certificate in Communications Law. The certificate requires the successful completion of 60 credits over a minimum of one year, which can be completed as follows:
◦four taught modules, or
◦three taught modules and the optional research seminar paper/presentation

On successful completion of the certificate you may switch to the diploma. The diploma must be completed within a minimum of two years, and a maximum of six years. The diploma requires the successful completion of 120 credits, which can be completed as follows:
◦eight taught modules (may include the optional research seminar paper/presentation), or
◦six taught modules (may include the optional research seminar paper/presentation) as well as one 10,000-word dissertation

If you choose to continue to the LLM, you will need to complete 180 credits, which can be completed as follows:

You can start the programme in either the autumn term or the spring term. You should return your completed application forms two months before the start of term. Degree information

Students develop an advanced knowledge of information security and an awareness of the context in which information security operates in terms of safety, environmental, social and economic aspects. Technologies based on the intelligent use of data are leading to great changes in our everyday life. Data Science and Engineering refers to the know-how and competence required to effectively manage and analyse the massive amount of data available in a wide range of domains.

We offer a two-year Master of Science in Computer Science centered on this emerging field. The backbone of the program is constituted by three core units on advanced data management, machine learning, and high performance computing. Leveraging on the expertise of our faculty, the rest of the program is organised in four tracks, Business Intelligence, Health & Life Sciences, Pervasive Computing, and Visual Computing, each providing a solid grounding in data science and engineering as well as a firm grasp of the domain of interest.

By blending standard classes with recitations and lab sessions our program ensures that each student masters the theoretical foundations and acquires hands-on experience in each subject. In most units credit is obtained by working on a final project. Additional credit is also gained through short-term internship in the industry or in a research lab. The master thesis is worth 25% of the total credit.

TRACKS

• Business Intelligence. This track builds on first hand knowledge of business management and fundamentals of data warehousing, and focuses on data mining, graph analytics, information visualisation, and issues related to data protection and privacy.
• Health & Life Sciences. Starting from core knowledge of signal and image processing, bioinformatics and computational biology, this track covers methods for biomedical image reconstruction, computational neuroengineering, well-being technologies and data protection and privacy.
• Pervasive Computing. Security and ubiquitous computing set the scene for this track which deals with data semantics, large scale software engineering, graph analytics and data protection and privacy.
• Visual Computing. This track lays the basics of signal & image processing and of computer graphics & augmented reality, and covers human computer interaction, computational vision, data visualisation, and computer games.

A collaborative project is supervised by a member of the Department, but the collaborating organisation will normally provide an external supervisor. This programme is also available to study full-time, and you could also study for a PGDip qualification where you take fewer modules overall. If you don’t have a degree, we usually ask you to register for the PGDip programme – you can upgrade to the MA if you progress successfully.

If you’re still not sure about applying to study for the MA, you could consider studying a single Applied and Professional Ethics Module as a stand-alone short course.

Course content

In your first year you’ll be introduced to principles and approaches in the study of ethics, and look at key workplace issues such as professional responsibility. You’ll then build on your knowledge as you go through the rest of the core modules – you’ll look at issues such as confidentiality, consent, contracts and diversity. You’ll be able to swap one module for an independent project, usually related to your line of work.

Throughout the degree you’ll be deepening your knowledge, improving your skills and gaining a new perspective on ethical issues. You’ll showcase all of this in your dissertation, where you’ll independently research a topic of your choice. You’ll submit this before the end of the programme in September of your final year.

This degree is taught entirely online, so there are no lectures or seminars. The enormous and rapidly growing power of ICT is the main driving force shaping our modern society. This goes beyond the technical and economical aspects. ICT is also essential in research as all sciences benefit from the raw power of software in processing huge quantities of data. But how do we manage and control the complexity of modern software? How can we make the most of the opportunities? And, not to be forgotten, how can we secure the ICT infrastructures we so heavily rely on? The Master’s programme in Computing Science covers all these aspects.

We offer specialisations in each terrain: security, software, data and the mathematics at the base of it all. These are not, however, isolated disciplines. Focusing on international legal business structures, this master’s course aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of international business agreements and dispute resolution mechanisms.

LLM International Trade Regulation comprises five core units, including a work-based project which accounts for a third of the course.

Law and Regulation of International Business Organisations: This unit focuses on the functioning and types of business organisations typical across the world, and their legal regulation. International Commercial Enforcement and Dispute Resolution: This unit is primarily concerned with mechanisms of obtaining redress in international commercial disputes. The Postgraduate Diploma in Global Legal Studies is an innovative programme that provides students with a world-class legal education, which is grounded in an appreciation of global social, economic, and cultural contexts and challenges. The increased potential for international elements to any legal issue – from trade and business, to crime, to migration, to information technology, to privacy – has meant that legal graduates need to possess skills that transcend one national jurisdiction. The Postgraduate Diploma in Global Legal Studies imparts just those skills. By taking the Postgraduate Diploma in Global Legal Studies, students will be exposed to a range of areas of legal regulation in a manner that goes far beyond one jurisdiction and will gain critical insights from a range of other disciplines, including politics, psychology, economics, and sociology. Students complete a total of 60 ECTS over the course of this programme. There are no compulsory modules; students have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of optional modules. Students must complete 60 taught credits over two semesters.
Not all modules offered will run every year; offerings are dependent upon demand and other potential constraints. Students may choose any combination of modules they wish, however, they cannot take more than 30 taught credits per semester.

Career Options

The Department of Law has strong links with law firms, regulators, nongovernmental agencies, and the technology sector. Certain modules on the programme are run in partnership with leading law firms, offering students the opportunity to apply for work placements at the end of their studies. Candidates will also have the opportunity to attend recruitment presentations by prospective employers.
The unique perspectives offered by the programme will be relevant to those seeking to work in the increasingly internationalised field of commercial legal practice, as well as those looking to work in international public and private sector organisations.
