This accredited project management course follows on the PRINCE2® Foundation course and provides you with an understanding of how the method works in practice. The course completes covering the contents of Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2®, the official manual of the method, published by the Cabinet Office in 2017.

"Today, complex projects often involve several organisations working together in partnership or through contractual agreements to achieve the objectives. PRINCE2® provides a common language between organisations and with external suppliers. It also allows a focus on the Business Case, providing a mechanism to define what the project is trying to achieve, and the rationale and business justification for it." (Cabinet Office's manual)

At the end of the course you will take a 2.5-hour multiple choice test, which leads to the sought-after PRINCE2® Practitioner certificate.

Course content

The course puts the PRINCE2® concepts into practice and to prepares you for the test that leads to the PRINCE2® Practitioner certificate.

The course begins where the Foundation course left off by going into more detail on each of the themes and processes that make up the method. The topics covered include:

Based on a case study, we will put the method into practice through a series of challenging questions that mirror the questions of the formal test.

The course consists of a series of classroom lectures and group exercises. The lectures introduce the method’s terminology, then we will discuss case studies to explain how to use the method in practice. We will provide supplementary learning material via the University’s online learning platform. At the end of each day we wil use multiple choice questions to remind us of the day’s learning and to prepare us for the certificate examination.

This accredited masters course is for individuals wishing to further their careers in project management or consultancy. In today's business environment, the skills of the project manager have never been more in demand. Organisations, businesses and governments are becoming increasingly aware of the strategic importance of effective project management for gaining a competitive advantage.

A masters degree in the rapidly growing area of project management will help develop skills that are highly sought-after globally in almost every sector.

This course is particularly relevant for professionals who wish to be able to run complex projects with a range of stakeholders, managing all phases to time and to budget.

This course is underpinned by the core competencies at the heart of the Association of Project Managers (APM), so you can be sure that what you learn is contemporary, relevant, and directly applicable in the workplace.

Our aim is to help you develop a range of technical skills that will be complemented by transferable soft skills so that you develop as an independent learner and thinker who is comfortable tackling the two key ideas in modern Business Project Management: choosing the right project and doing the project right. This means you'll be able to identify and select projects that are going to benefit an organisation, and then deliver them within the scope required, to the budget and on schedule. With that skill set, it isn't hard to see why graduates from this course are in high demand.

Teaching and learning

In addition to addressing the APM's core competencies, the course has four objectives which underpin it:

•Enabling change through combining traditional techniques such as cash flow spreadsheets with innovative new ideas, like qualitative system dynamics
•Applying soft and hard analysis approaches associated with Operational Research and Systems Movement
•Applying PRINCE2 and MS Project theories and practices/
•Developing a critical understanding of different research methods and methodologies for project management

We've developed this course with three interconnected areas in mind of profession, practice and research. As a result, every module is built with an awareness of the requirements of project management bodies such as the APM (in the UK) and the Project Management Institute (in the USA). The bodies of knowledge of these organisations are combined with PRINCE2 project management methodology and MS Project, and applied to real world project assignments that will also require the application of a variety of methodologies and techniques to give you invaluable practical experience, which you can further enhance through work placements undertaken while studying for your dissertation.

Our academic team then take all of this knowledge and experience and develop and apply new theories and approaches as part of their research, which in turn influences how project management develops as a discipline. Lecturing staff have a history of publishing dissertations, with postgraduate students, in journals and conferences. Moreover, staff regularly chair project management streams at Business Research Methodology and Operational Research conferences.

Professional links

All taught modules are underpinned by the APM's core competencies. Additionally, PRINCE2 is the management methodology used in the assignment for Fundamentals of Project Management. The modules provide a thorough grounding to enable the student to work towards professional management qualifications.

This course is all about the practical application of theory. Project management is now a central tool across many organisations, as more and more tasks are being managed as projects. For those working in the field or looking to develop their capabilities in this area, the PGCert in Project Management covers the knowledge and techniques required to manage large, complex projects successfully across a variety of contexts. It also provides you with an opportunity to develop the soft management skills essential to effective project management and so often neglected.

You may already work full-time in the field (or for a significant part of your role) and aspire to become an Association for Project Management (APM) Registered Project Professional, or to move into a more senior position. The course is also relevant to individuals working outside of project management, who will gain significant benefit from applying the skills and techniques across other business functions.

Course detail

The course covers the fundamental concepts, processes and tools reflected in both PRINCE2® and Association for Project Management Body of Knowledge (APM BoK) 6th edition. This means that alongside the PGCert, you have the option to also gain:

• the APMP qualification from the Association for Project Management, a qualification which is recognised nationally and internationally across many different sectors and industries

• the PRINCE2® Practitioner qualification, which is supported by Government and widely recognised by recruiters as a 'must have' for many project management roles in the UK.

As well as equipping you with the technical skills to manage projects successfully, we focus a lot of our attention on strengthening the soft skills that come into play within project management everything from communication to leadership. Many of these skills are transferable and can be applied to the management of any complex business task, in particular those requiring detailed planning, prioritising and analysis.

Structure

The course is designed to give you a Postgraduate Certificate in Project Management from UWE, with the additional option to complete the PRINCE2® Practitioner and the APM Project Management Qualification (if required) alongside.

You can register for the course at any time and start the PRINCE2 learning (if you wish to do so) before the next run of the Project Management Competence module.

Modules

• Project Management Competence
• Project Management Principles in Practice

Additional assessment will be required for those wishing to gain the PRINCE2® Practitioner qualification and/or the APMP qualification (SCQF Level 7).

Format

If you opt to study the course online, you will have access to our full distance learning package with online materials and synchronised live sessions with your tutors via our Blackboard system. Group drop-in sessions will also run at set times throughout the year where you can meet with other course participants and discuss your progress.

Alternatively you can choose to study the course via a mix of online study units and face-to-face group sessions at our campus in Bristol to reinforce your e-learning and independent study.

On both routes, you will benefit from a range of learning methods, including e-learning, teaching based on research literature and practical experience, and peer and work-based learning. A significant emphasis is placed on drawing insight from real examples of project management work, and you will also have the opportunity to engage with the APM Body of Knowledge and academic literature on project management.

Assessment

Assessment for the Project Management Competence module takes the form of a reflective report on a project you are involved in. You will complete a 400-word proposal identifying key elements to be reviewed in your final report, and then review a project, discussing the elements identified in your proposal.

The Project Management Principles in Practice module is assessed through a work-based learning assignment, consisting of:
• a proposal containing research objectives/outcomes
• a written project (up to 8,000 words)
• a client presentation
• an informal viva with your supervisor to reflect upon your project experience.

Careers / Further study

This programme gives project management professionals the technical knowledge, skills development opportunities, and access to further professional qualifications, to be able to take their career to a senior project manager or director level.

Many participants use the course as a fast-track route onto the Association for Project Management (APM) and PRINCE2® Practitioner qualifications.

The MSc is building a reputation for producing excellent scientists and highly sought after graduates. Our postgraduates have been offered employment in some of the most prestigious companies in the UK and Europe, in fields ranging from analytical toxicology to forensic DNA analysis.

On this course, you can study a range of specialist areas in analytical and forensic science. It focuses on cutting edge research, the latest analytical techniques, and transferable and professional skills that will prepare you to practise as a professional analytical or forensic scientist. A 60 credit research project of your choice allows you to customise the MSc and specialise in your chosen field.

“Completing this MSc gave me a much more advanced knowledge of analytical instruments and techniques and has been a great help in preparing me for the role that I now have in toxicology. The amount of hands on practical experience in the Masters is much more extensive than in a Bachelors degree and it’s the higher level of practical work that can make the difference. Covering a variety of techniques applied to a wide range of sample types ensures you have an understanding that other graduates will not have, particularly after the completion of your dissertation by spending a considerable amount of time in the lab. The addition of the PRINCE2 qualification also makes you more employable to commercial labs. I have no doubt that without this MSc my chances of gaining a job with a career path would be significantly less.” – Laura Miles, MSc Analytical and Forensic Science graduate.
