This programme will prepare students in line with the requirements of the Teachers’ Standards (2012) for the award of QTS. UCL works in partnership with around 350 primary schools to enable Primary PGCE students to fully prepare to be a primary teacher. We encourage a wide range of students to study for the Primary PGCE, and have a good record of attracting traditionally under-represented groups.

About this programme

Our Primary PGCE develops effective, confident teachers whose classroom practice is informed by an advanced knowledge of educational theory, and who will continue to learn and reflect throughout their careers. We will help students to acquire the skills and expertise to support children’s learning, prepare them to teach in an inclusive urban environment, provide professional development in all national curriculum subjects and ensure that students show a concern for professional values and demonstrate the positive attitudes and behaviour expected from pupils.

Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules as part of the PGCE, with a total of 60 Master’s credits on successful completion.

The programme consists of three core modules, two at Master’s-level (level 7) and one at Undergraduate-level (level 6) and three school placements.

Where less than 60 credits are achieved at level 7, but are successfully passed at level 6, a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE) - including a QTS recommendation - will be awarded. Students who complete the level 7 modules but fail the Professional Practice module will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) which excludes the QTS.

Placement

As part of the programme students will spend time on placements at schools or Early Years Centres, during which time their teaching experience will be supported by a tutor and mentor. Students will spend 120 days on placements.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered via a combination of lectures, workshops, tutorials and self-study. Students will be supported though a virtual learning environment and will participate in school placements. Assessment is through assignments, presentations, audits, feedback and tutorials. A final assessment is based on a range of evidence including observations of teaching, assignments, subject knowledge development, professional conduct and responses to self-study.

Students on the Primary PGCE programme benefit enormously from the complementary skills and expertise of staff in partnership schools and at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE). The schools offer placements for teaching experience, and their teachers serve as tutors, mentors and joint assessors for our student teachers. IOE tutors have extensive experience of teaching, school management, inspection, research and consultancy.

Primary PGCE students can gain experience of teaching across one or more key stages; the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1; Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2; lower Key Stage 2 (ages 7 to 9) and upper Key Stage 2 (ages 9 to 11). Students will learn to teach all the primary curriculum subjects. This intensive, full time programme leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) alongside your academic award.

Although you will spend the majority of your time in school, the School Direct Programmes at LJMU include University-based training sessions which take place at the IM Marsh campus. These include: a week long summer school at the end of August, weekly campus sessions and a number of conference days or full weeks of training. Additional training and professional development programmes are organised in school by the Lead School. Two of our School Direct programmes at Knutsford and Turton are delivered off site at the schools by LJMU staff. Trainees on these programmes are still expected to attend the Summer School.

As this is a postgraduate course, you should expect to undertake a significant amount of independent study and preparation, not only to support your course assignments, but also your school-based work.

This intense programme is tightly focused on providing you with the skills and knowledge required. Tutorial support is an important part of the process and you will receive a personalised service that will enable you to set targets and achieve to your highest potential.

Your personal tutor will meet with you regularly to monitor your progress, provide guidance and advice and set targets for your development.

You will also be allocated a teacher mentor who will organise and supervise your school-based training. Your mentor will be supported by an LJMU tutor who will visit school several times during the year to monitor your progress.

School Direct is a route into teaching which involves schools working in partnership with accredited teacher training institutions, such as ours, to devise a training programme. We have a successful track record of working with schools to offer School Direct training routes to Qualified Teacher Status. Collectively, we are committed to the development of outstanding teachers who have a transformative impact on learners' lives.

The key focus of our School Direct programmes is to equip you with the knowledge and skills to teach across the primary age phase (electing to specialise within either the 3–7, 5–11 or 7–11 age range). During your training, you will develop an understanding of the National Curriculum and the learning needs of children. You will also develop the professional values and practice that you will require to meet the broad demands of teaching.

The quality of teacher training in primary education was rated as 'Outstanding' in Ofsted's report on our initial teacher education provision in 2016. "The high employment rates on both core and School Direct routes which support local needs" was identified by Ofsted as a key strength.

Both of our programmes include a combination of school-based training and university-based courses. Our programmes harness the knowledge, experience and expertise of our school colleagues within the partnership in the delivery of both programmes.

We have a long history of teacher training, going back over 100 years at Avery Hill Campus. Employment rates are consistently above national and London averages. Training is delivered by highly effective teachers from both our partner schools and the university.

School Direct salaried programme

Our School Direct salaried programme is open to graduates with three or more years' career experience. This does not necessarily need to have been in a school or education setting.

Trainees will be employed as an unqualified teacher with a salary subsidised by the National College for Teaching and Leadership. This programme leads to the recommendation of the award of Qualified Teacher Status.

School Direct programme

Our School Direct programme is open to all graduates and funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee. Trainees will study for a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) as well as the recommendation of the award of Qualified Teacher Status.

Home and EU students may be eligible for a tuition fee loan available through Student Finance England. In addition, a bursary may be available from the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). For more details on funding, visit the Department for Education website.

What you'll study

For those trainees embarking upon the School Direct programme, you will follow our PGCE route.

The full-time PGCE consists of the following courses:

  • Primary Professional Enhancement (15 credits)
  • The Child, the School and the Community (15 credits)
  • Initial School Experience (15 credits)
  • Final School Experience (30 credits)
  • Children's Learning and Development (30 credits)
  • Creativity in Learning and Teaching (30 credits)
  • Professional Development (15 credits).

You will have the option to study both the Children's Learning and Development course and the Creativity in Learning and Teaching course at Master's level, earning 60 Master's-level credits.

The School Direct salaried programme is an employment-based route into teaching and will lead to the recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

The majority of training will take place within schools. The training programme will be personalised to the individual's professional needs but will include training in a range of areas. For example, teaching and learning, curriculum, assessment, working with parents and the community.

All training is closely aligned to support the trainee achieve the Teachers' Standards. In addition to this, taught input will also be provided by the University of Greenwich.

Both programmes are 1 year full-time.

Assessment

Trainees are assessed on a continuous basis for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). School Direct programme students will also complete assignments for the academic award of Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

Professional recognition

The programme leads to the recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status.

The course leads directly to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), with your progress audited against QTS Standards designed to ensure you graduate fully prepared to teach children aged 5-11 in the primary phase. The course offers a particular focus on Mathematics, English and Science, with high-quality support provided by University-based tutors and trained school-based tutors.

Compared with non-School Direct teacher trainees, you will benefit from additional time in school. Indeed, more than 50% of the course is based in partnership schools. During your professional placements, you will be assessed continually and receive high-quality feedback. Your subject knowledge in English, Mathematics and Science will be audited regularly, and you will submit assignments that relate to the teaching of English, Mathematics, Science and ICT.

We work with numerous schools in Greater Manchester to offer the School Direct route into teaching; all routes involve the joint selection of candidates by schools and tutors at The University of Manchester.

PGCE Primary School Direct is highly regarded by local head teachers and the rate of employment of trainees from the course is consistently high. Indeed at the end of the course, your lead school may offer you a permanent role.

What is School Direct?

School Direct is a government-led initiative that seeks to place schools at the centre of Initial Teacher Education (ITE). Working with University of Roehampton, our partner schools take a leading role in recruiting trainee teachers and in designing and delivering the training programme. 

There are two possible routes if you are thinking of training via School Direct:

School Direct Training Programme (salaried)

This is open to high quality graduates with three or more years' professional experience.Applications are made on UCAS to individual schools or alliances of schools. The schools pay a salary based on that of an unqualified teacher but there is no government bursary. Trainees carry out training at Roehampton and within their school alliance.

School Direct Training Programme (tuition fee)

This route is open to all high quality graduates. The trainee can receive a bursary from the government at a level determined by the subject/phase of training and the trainee's degree class. Trainees carry out training at Roehampton and within their school alliance.

Structure

Both routes lead to a PGCE with 60 Masters credits on successful completion. There will be three assignments across the year, each leading to 20 Masters level credits. You will spend at least 120 days in school over the year long programme, and will also attend classes at Roehampton. Your main placement will be in the school that you have applied to and there will also be a shorter placement in another school which will add breadth to the experience.

You will be visited in school by a university tutor, and you will have a mentor in school. The training at Roehampton will enable you to reflect upon your practice within the broad context of educational theory so that you will feel equipped to teach in any school.

We have more than 100 years' experience of teacher training and you'll be supported by an experienced course team determined to see you flourish as an innovative primary school teacher. You will become part of a supportive teaching and learning community, where you will be able to pick up advice and tips from your course tutors and share ideas on lesson plans and classroom experiences with your fellow students.

We provide ongoing training for all newly qualified teachers. On successful completion of your course, you will be able to enrol on our Newly Qualified Teacher module, providing you with another valuable element of support and coaching as you start your teaching career.

Course Overview

The Primary PGCE programmes (General Primary (Lower) and General Primary (Upper)) are designed to prepare students for a career in teaching.

The PGCE is a full-time, intensive vocational programme, suitable for those wishing to train to teach, inspire and enthuse primary aged children, helping them to make excellent progress in learning. The course offers rich opportunities for personal development, as students embark upon the first stages of a career which is challenging, fulfilling and rewarding.

The sessions both in school and at the University are intended to involve students in a range of experiences, which are carefully planned to increase understanding of learning and teaching across the Primary curriculum. There is a focus on developing personal reflective skills, and in engaging with current educational research in order to develop students as knowledgeable and effective practitioners.

The university element adopts a modular structure and teaching takes a blended learning approach including lead lectures, group seminars, tutorials, independent study and directed activities using the virtual learning environment (moodle).

Professional Teaching Experiences take place in a variety of educational contexts. Students build confidence and expertise, culminating in taking responsibility for planning, teaching and assessing a class of children in their chosen phase for a sustained period of time.

In our most recent inspection, Estyn (the Welsh educational inspectorate) praised the Centre’s innovative use of teaching approaches such as Problem-based learning, which forms a core element of the professional studies module.

The primary PGCE programme at Swansea sets high expectations of its students and is run jointly between the University and partnership schools across the South Wales region. Programme tutors are knowledgeable and skilful qualified teachers. They possess a wide range of experience and expertise in key curriculum areas and other fields such as literacy, numeracy, ICT, inclusion, Welsh medium studies, humanities, early years, performing arts, bilingualism, PE, RE, thinking skills and more!

Tutors provide excellent pastoral and academic support to ensure that students receive the individual guidance and challenge required to make excellent progress.

During the Programme students study a breadth of subjects, areas of learning and professional matters.

Assessment

In order to complete the programme successfully and meet national standards, students must pass both the practical teaching and written elements of the programme. Practical teaching competence will be assessed by teachers in schools, in conjunction with the university tutor.

University assessments currently include essays, portfolio tasks, presentations and research reports. The programme currently offers 40 level 7 credits at Masters level.

We seek to recruit students who are committed to developing their personal skills and knowledge throughout their studies. Students’ personal literacy and numeracy skills will be regularly audited and monitored throughout the programme. It is a requirement of Welsh Government that literacy skills are measured on exit and judged to be proficient for professional practice. The School Direct Programme (Salaried) is a new route into teaching at both primary and secondary levels. Participating schools, or clusters of schools that join together, are allocated a set number of student-teacher places which can be applied for. Students will earn a salary while they train.

About this programme

Students will be part of a school team from the start and will receive intensive support from experienced teachers in the classroom. Opportunities will exist to build networks with fellow trainees. This route leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

There are two compulsory school placements. Students are expected to complete the associated tasks, and to build a portfolio of evidence during the academic year to demonstrate they have met national teaching standards.

Students do not undertake academic credits on this programme. However, all components will need to be assessed to gain QTS.

Placement

As part of the programme students will spend time in placement at a school or college, during which time their teaching practice will be supported by a school subject tutor and mentor. For this programme students will spend the majority of the programme in school, employed as an unqualified teacher.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered via a series of lectures and workshop at the UCL Institute of Education for 15 days (10 days' Professional Studies and five days' subject-specific training) spread over the autumn and spring terms. The placement schools are responsible for providing an additional 45 days of training activities, alongside the practical teaching experience. Students are assessed on their practical teaching of Primary Mathematics and core subjects, and their progress in achieving the standards for Qualified Teacher Status by gathering evidence in the form of a portfolio.

There are over 40 schools and colleges in the Greater London area and beyond participating in the School Direct (Salaried) programme. 

Each of these offer student-teacher places in two key stages to gain a broad experience of teaching across primary age phases. Your training will focus on the delivery of the mathematics curriculum, on which you will spend 50% of your teaching time. The remaining 50% of your time will be teaching core subjects (English, science and computer science). Your training and teaching practice will focus on early mathematics, but it will be necessary for you to demonstrate competence in phonics delivery, inclusion and behaviour management.

The training students receive from one of the participating schools will enable them to become a skilled and confident teacher.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education Primary Education offers initial teacher education to develop reflective teachers who care about pupils’ development and who understand how to ensure pupil progression. What happens on the course?

Over the one year course, you will undertake University-based learning at Walsall Campus, and you will spend at least 120 days divided between two different schools across the 3-11 age range within the Primary age phase.

Learning is through experience, exploration and research, and is technology supported - you will also be allocated a personal tutor for the duration of the course.

All course modules provide examples of good practice in teaching which you will reflect upon as you develop your own teaching style. You will be expected to participate actively in your own learning and development/.

Starting in September and ending in June the full-time PGCE is the fastest and most condensed way for non-experienced trainees to qualify.

120 days (24 weeks) of the 36 week PGCE course will be spent in schools.

We try to take your geographical location into account when placing you in schools but our first concern is to ensure that you have a high quality school placement that can provide a range of experiences. Additional training will therefore take place in partner schools other than your 'attachment' schools. Support is available from your University Tutor throughout your training, plus from experienced teachers accredited by the University as school based tutors.

Career path

Successful completion of the PGCE Primary Education course leads to recommendation to NCTL for qualified teacher status (QTS) and will then allow you to take up a teaching post within a primary school.

A national survey conducted by the Centre for Education and Employment Research has ranked Wolverhampton as the second most successful UK Higher Education Institute for graduate teacher training employment

88% of primary NQTs in 2012 rated the overall quality of their training as very good or good.

The Teachers’ Standards 2012 provide the framework by which your progress in your teaching is judged. These are supplemented with descriptors which support you in understanding the qualities which define the level at which you meet the standards.

The webfolio is the medium through which your assignments and documentary evidence are managed. It forms the central spine of the course, drawing the range of experiences and activities together in a coherent structure. The webfolio is designed to help you engage in critical self-evaluation of your practice, helping you to identify areas of strength and areas for future development.

The webfolio will also provide you with a flexible means by which you can gather and store information about your understanding, knowledge, values and beliefs. Its portability ensures that you will be able to continue to use it as a gateway for your professional development beyond the award of QTS.

By choosing to train as a teacher of five to 11-year-olds with London Metropolitan University, you’ll be joining a powerful partnership of diverse teachers and schools. In this National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL)-accredited course, the emphasis is on urban multicultural environments, ideal if you want to teach in a city setting. You’ll undertake school placements of 11 and 13 weeks, giving you hands-on practical experience. Our trainees attain highly, with 95% achieving an Ofsted good or outstanding grade by the end of the course, and 96% obtaining employment, many in their placement schools.

This exciting NCTL-accredited PGCE course leads to Qualified Teacher Status and prepares you to teach five to 11-year-olds (Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2). You'll also be able to work in an Early Years setting.

Our course has two modules designed to help you develop an understanding of your future role as a primary school teacher. This structure gives you room to develop your classroom practice as well as examine the underlying principles and values around educational issues.

The Curriculum Studies module introduces you to the challenges of teaching within urban, multicultural and multilingual schools. You’ll also learn how to teach core subjects including English, Mathematics and Science.

The Professionalism and Inclusive Practice (PIP) module includes your two extended school placements of 11 and 13 weeks. There are clear links to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), giving you a responsible framework for meeting the needs of all the children you’ll teach.

Throughout your school placements, our school-based mentors and university-linked tutors will support you in in the classroom. The latter will also teach your university sessions, ensuring there is continuity of support throughout your training. By working in both environments, you have the chance to reflect on the links between your own teaching theory and practice.

Your assessment will consist of four elements:
-School placement A
-School placement B, where your teaching ability will be assessed in relation to the standard for Qualified Teacher Status
-A Professional Practice Portfolio which is compiled across the year, detailing personal experiences and reflections on your development as a teacher, largely in relation to your practical teaching experience
-The Educational Research Assignment, which allows you to explore an educational issue

There are no examinations.

Modular structure

The modules listed below are for the academic year 2016/17 and represent the course modules at this time. Modules and module details (including, but not limited to, location and time) are subject to change over time.

Year 1 modules include:
-Curriculum Studies (core, 30 credits)
-Professionalism and Inclusive Practice (core, 30 credits)
-School Experience to Progress Point 2 (core, 15 credits)
-School Experience to Progress Point 5 (core, 45 credits)

After the course

This intensive PGCE leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which enables you to teach five to 11-year-olds. Our trainees have gone on to secure primary teacher roles at schools including Epsom Primary School, Dartford Bridge Primary, Mission Grove Primary School and more.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.
