The Advanced Practice in Health Care courses enable experienced health care professionals from varied clinical backgrounds to develop their skills and knowledge to an advanced level of practice.

Advanced Practice in Health Care has been offered at Swansea University since 1992. It is continually refined to ensure it remains at the forefront of contemporary practice.
Modules for the Advanced Practice in Health Care course are designed to enable the clinician to develop knowledge and skills essential to the role of an advanced practitioner i.e. enhanced assessment, diagnostic and disease management skills. Students may also undertake studies for non-medical prescribing.
The Advanced Practice in Health Care course enables students to develop their critical and creative thinking skills in relation to clinical practice to an advanced level. additionally, they are able to develop their knowledge and skills in their roles as researchers, educators, managers and leaders.

The Advanced Practice in Health Care course is taught at the St. David’s Park site in Carmarthen. There are two student intakes per year, one in October and another in March. Students also have access to the extensive facilities at the Singleton Park campus in Swansea.
The course consists of two parts.
For students beginning the course in October, Part One modules are taught for one day a week between October and May for the first two years.
For students beginning the course in March, Part One modules are taught for one day a week between March and January for the first two years, however teaching days are in line with normal University holidays.
Part Two consists of the dissertation which has to be submitted by 30th September in the third year.
The Advanced Practice in Health Care programme comprises several compulsory modules with some optional modules available.

The first year of the pathway (PGCert) meets the national competencies for IAPT Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs) and is a mandatory requirement, funded through an NHS contract, for newly appointed PWPs.
The course aims to enhance access to, and the effectiveness of, mental health and social care services that are evidence-based, multidisciplinary and focused on the needs of patients/service users and their carers.
The course will equip students with the advanced knowledge and skills necessary to enhance their own practice (PGCert) and the practice of others, as well as contribute to innovations and developments in mental health care and service delivery (PGDip/MSc).
You will participate in a range of teaching and learning methods, including lectures, small group work, student-led seminars, problem-based learning scenarios, online learning and clinical simulations.
There is a strong emphasis on skills development through the use of role play, experiential exercises and analysis and elements of supervised practice and practice mentorship to achieve practical skills outcomes for some course units.
In addition, you will undertake independent study to further develop and consolidate your learning. All pathways involve sessions by users and/or carers who are seen as essential contributors to student learning as experts by experience.
The course involves attendance at the University for part of the week and the rest is spent in clinical practice. In Year 1, you are required to identify a suitable practice supervisor/mentor to oversee and assess the clinical and/or practice work required for the programme and pathway.
Students working within an IAPT service are expected to receive supervision from supervisors who have completed IAPT Supervisor Training. This is an accredited five-day training programme currently provided by the University and is an essential requirement for Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs) seeking accreditation with the BABCP on qualification.
We use a variety of assessments within each course unit and across the course as a whole. All assessments require you to integrate knowledge and understanding and apply this to your own area of practice relevant to the outcomes of each unit and the focus of each pathway.
Assessment methods include essays, case studies, seminar presentations, literature reviews, recorded clinical simulations and/or recordings of actual client interactions. For some course units, you are also required to submit practice supervision/or practice mentorship records.

On completion of the taught units (PGDip), successful students who meet progression requirements are able to continue onto their research dissertation for the MSc. The dissertation enables you, with the support of an individual supervisor, to undertake an extended written piece of work that focuses on a specific aspect of primary mental health care practice in the form of an extended literature-based review.
The Year 3 dissertation consists of a 12,000 to 15,000-word dissertation that undertakes an extended literature-based review/proposal for practice development.
This course has been designed in collaboration with practice colleagues and is delivered by nationally renowned and published experts in the field. The pathway has an excellent track record of working with service user and carer organisations as an integral part of the teaching team.
The course is based in a building housing seminar rooms, IT facilities, interpersonal skills laboratories and lecture theatres.

This Primary Care Mental Health Practice course offers an exciting and rewarding opportunity to develop your skills in evidence based low intensity cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) interventions for common mental health problems and to gain the accreditation you need to practice as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP).
The Postgraduate Certificate Primary Care Mental Health Practice and Graduate Certificate Promoting Psychological Wellbeing are fully accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) on behalf of the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) National Programme. It is nationally recognised for its high quality training provision and highly skilled teaching team in the field of Low Intensity CBT interventions.
Learning takes place in both academic and clinical environments. In university you will be involved in lectures, small group work, role plays, video taped sessions and seminars. You will also be working under supervision with a client group in a primary care setting.
The course is assessed via a variety of methods. Clinical and academic work is integrated through the production of case study presentations and seminar presentations. Role plays are recorded and critiqued and clinical practice documents provide an opportunity to assess practice.
You will develop your competence in psychological clinical assessment and low-intensity CBT interventions, including behavioural activation, exposure and habituation, panic management, cognitive restructuring, sleep management, problem solving and medication concordance. The course is heavily focused upon the development of clinical skills in the IAPT approved clinical methods.

Improving access to services which can effectively treat people experiencing common mental health problems will have a major impact on the health and well-being of the population. Primary care is now the cornerstone of the NHS and needs to be able to meet the growing demands placed upon it. By offering practitioners the opportunity to develop and enhance skills in low intensity interventions and guided self-help for common mental health problems this course hopes to support a work force that can effectively meet the changing needs in primary mental healthcare.
Students will critically examine the history and development of primary care services and the impact that this has had on the developing culture of services and the roles and responsibilities of individuals in contemporary primary care mental health practice. You will also be introduced to concepts of mental health philosophies, models and frameworks for safe and competent mental health care. Collaborative skills in engagement, patient-centred interviewing, problem formulation, goal setting, clinical implementation and routine measurement, the promotion of medication concordance, co-ordination and referral will provide the focus of the course.

The MSc Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care (Adult Mental Health) is designed for all healthcare professionals working in mental health services.

Simulated practice enables you to practise your skills in a safe environment, in preparation for transferring these skills to a 'real life' setting. Our specialist Clinical Skills Centre at City’s Northampton Square Campus has been designed especially for teaching and reflects clinical environments and working wards, so you can familiarise yourself with equipment and practices before commencing placements.

Opportunity to specialise in Global or Mental Health

School of Health Sciences postgraduate education
This course is part of our School of Health Sciences postgraduate education programme. The programme allows you to sign up for one module at a time and build your qualification as you go. It also gives you access to interdisciplinary modules across a broad selection of health and social science subjects.
You will take these two core modules no matter which pathway you choose.
The masters award
You need to earn a total of 180 credits for the masters award, consisting of six 20-credit taught modules and a 60-credit dissertation. Twenty-credit modules have approximately 30 hours' classroom-based lecturer contact or group work and we expect this to be backed up by approximately 170 hours of individual study and work on assignments.
The course team are active in public health research particularly around healthy weight, inequalities, mental health, sexual health, infant feeding, diabetes prevention and young people and we provide dissertation research opportunities in these areas.
You will experience formal teaching alongside a series of extracurricular seminars both within the school and through forums such as the Brighton and Sussex Universities Food Network, or the Global Health Network which operate across University of Brighton, Brighton and Sussex Medical School and University of Sussex.
The assessment and teaching methods are varied, including problem based learning in response to public health triggers, and assessments by presentation, vivas as well as formal written critical reports.
The dissertation consists of a literature review, small-scale prime research or a work-based learning project.
You will be supported through your dissertation via monthly optional discussion groups in addition to formal dissertation supervision. If you are working, the dissertation provides an opportunity to conduct a work-based learning project (if you wish), for example evaluating or developing a particular aspect of your organisation's work from a health promotion perspective.
Clinical Skills and Simulation Suite
Our Clinical Skills and Simulation Suite is among the best equipped in the country, and is an invaluable tool for assessment and monitoring students' progress throughout the course.
You will benefit from practising nursing skills in an environment that simulates real-life professional experiences. Provided by the NHS’ South East Coast Ambulance Service, you may have access to our Simbulance, enabling you to work alongside paramedic students in an interprofessional learning environment. On board is a high fidelity mannikin with multiple uses, and a child-size mannikin for paediatric scenarios.
Learning by simulation means you will be confident in your ability to apply your knowledge and skills in your professional life.
On graduation, you will be prepared for a career as a health promotion specialist working in public health practice in the public, not-for-profit, voluntary or commercial sector.
Our students often find employment in public health, or change their job role to include more public health, part way through their masters and may shift from full-time to part-time study to complete their MSc.
Typical roles include, programme coordinators or commissioners for local public health, health project coordinators for voluntary sector organisations, young peoples’ welfare or sexual health advisers in a college or primary prevention setting.
Global health issues are considered throughout the teaching, making the course relevant to participants from all types of economies.
If you are a UK student, you will graduate with a better understanding of international health for working with diverse communities in Britain, preparing you for working internationally and raising awareness of the challenges for public health in our globalised world. The course has long-standing links with the International Union of Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) and local public health departments and organisations.
Clinical and research expertise are blended in the delivery of this multidisciplinary programme where high standards of clinical care are emphasised and students are encouraged to apply their critical and analytical thinking skills to theory, policy and practice in child and adolescent mental health.
The programme will develop your ability to identify and analyse principles of policy, planning and management in child and adolescent mental health. You will gain professional, academic and research skills and understand how their application can improve clinical practice. You will increase your understanding of the impact of culture and diversity upon clinical theory and practice, and experience enhanced personal and professional development.
Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.
The programme consists of five core modules (75 credits), three optional modules (45 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits).
A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, one year part-time, flexible two to five years) is offered. The programme consists of five core modules (75 credits), and three optional modules (45 credits).
A Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits, one year part-time, two years flexible) is offered. Three core modules (45 credits) and a choice of one of the two remaining core modules (15 credits).
All MSc students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 to 12,000 words.
Teaching and learning
The programme is taught through a combination of lectures, workshops, discussion, project work and independent and group study. Assessment includes written assignments, unseen written examinations, projects, oral presentations, group work, and the written dissertation.
We are able to offer a limited number of clinical placements in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in various NHS Trusts. Places are not guaranteed and are based on availability.
The placements are a minimum of one day a week for a period of eight weeks and will be supervised by medical and non-medical consultants within the service.
Placements are observational only and will not be formally assessed but may offer opportunities to participate in research studies and other academic and teaching activities in the host trust.
The cost of the placement is in the range of £75 to £200.

The programme provides career development training for doctors, psychologists and practitioners in social work and education who intend to focus and develop their careers in the areas of child mental health.
This is a relatively new programme and only limited career destination data is available. However, recent graduates have gone on to Clinical Doctorates in Psychology or had opportunities for progression in their current careers.

This programme attracts psychology graduates who wish to enhance their opportunities for progression to further clinical psychology training, and trainees in child psychiatry who wish to supplement their basic training with a higher degree; the MSc programme is closely aligned to the Royal College’s recommended curriculum. Students from social work, nursing and education will benefit from the acquisition of advanced skills in the theory and practice of working with young people with mental health difficulties. Clinical placements are available as an extracurricular option for students who aim to develop their career in a profession related to clinical practice.

Full-time – 18 months (four modules a semester plus dissertation)
Part-time – typically three years (two modules a semester plus dissertation). Part-time students attend four hours a week on campus during the day.

Students are assessed using a variety of methods: reports, presentations, book reviews and essays and for all but three assessment tasks students are able to choose a public health topic and/or population group on which to focus their work. There are no examinations.
By successfully completing this course, you may find that it makes it easier to gain promotion, or enter jobs in public health departments of primary care trusts. Previous graduates have gained roles such as teenage pregnancy coordinator, health promotion specialist and five-a-day co-ordinator. Others have joined local authorities, the voluntary sector such as Agewell, and become Sure Start managers.
A number of graduates have remained in their roles as health visitors, public health nurses or midwives, working more strategically and in more depth. Overseas students have used the qualification to work successfully in their own countries. Some people have taken the course to work towards becoming a nurse consultant.
The course also provides an excellent foundation for further academic study including PhDs.
