Overview

The MSc Finance programme has been a highly successful programme, with many of its graduates attaining high-level positions in major financial institutions. Furthermore, several of its graduates have gone on to complete PhDs in Finance, Economics and Accountancy.

The degree is an intensive 9-month programme with six taught modules and a dissertation. Most of the modules are taught by members of faculty, but in order to further enhance the quality of the programme, we have two visiting professors who teach intensive one-week courses. Professor Stephen Hall (Imperial College, London) teaches on the Research Methods in Finance module. Professor Lawrence White (University of Missouri) teaches the Money and Banking module.

The MSc Finance is designed to provide students with the academic knowledge and skills necessary to obtain employment with leading financial institutions or government agencies. Graduates have been very successful securing jobs in the following areas: banking, fund management, broking, program trading, management, corporate finance, economic research and financial regulation.

Financial Strategy
This module provides students with the basic applied microeconomic skills required for a career in modern financial markets. Typical topics include: basic consumer choice theory, including intertemporal choice and choice under uncertainty; financial market problems associated with asymmetric information; insurance contracts, and investor signalling and screening.

Research Methods in Finance
This module is designed to give students both theoretical and practical experience of statistical and econometric techniques. The module will acquaint students with a range of modern econometric techniques, which are an essential part of modern advanced empirical research.

Corporate Finance
The aim of this module is to familiarise students with the primary theoretical and empirical issues confronting the modern corporation when making decisions about investment, capital structure, dividends and mergers.

January – April

International Finance
This module is designed to develop a rigorous understanding of international financial markets. Emphasis is placed on the theoretical basis for pricing such assets as forward exchange rates. Recent international monetary events such as the establishment of the euro are studied extensively.

Options, Futures and Other Derivative Securities
This module provides students with a rigorous theoretical understanding of derivative instruments. The course includes the following topics: the theory of futures markets; futures contract pricing; pricing of interest rate and stock index futures; the theory of option pricing.

Money and Banking
This module provides students with an understanding of modern banking and other financial institutions. The emphasis is placed on policy issues such as: the regulation of financial institutions; the determination of the value and quantity of both private and fiat money; the proper role of central banking, government macroeconomic policies, affecting output and employment; and fixed verses floating exchange rates.

April – June

Students are assigned supervisors and have to undertake an original piece of empirical finance research. This module provides a framework for assessing the usefulness of accounting information and accounting regulation for external users and management. Research Methods in Finance

Corporate Finance

Accounting and Capital Markets
This module integrates material in the accounting and securities valuation module with investment management decision making. The main areas covered include the theoretical economic underpinnings of capital markets, the role of firms’ disclosure in equity markets, the role of information intermediaries, value investing, and market microstructure.

Performance Management and Governance
The module explores the role and application of strategic performance management and governance in organisations. Theoretical and practical performance management and governance issues will be examined in both businesses and not-for profit organizations (NFPOs) primarily through the use of published research papers. Through this, the usefulness of a variety of research methods will be examined, including qualitative research utilising case studies and interviews.

Plus a choice of ONE of the following modules:

Customers are central to marketing, which to a large extent involves making promises to customers and then meeting the expectations thus created. This is accomplished through the firm's own value creation activities, but also through support for the value creation process of customers, channel members and other stakeholders. These activities and processes are often international in scope, which is reflected in the content of the different courses in various ways. The international aspect of the marketing programme is also evident in the international faculty and study body, as well as in the possibility to study abroad for a semester.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

PREREQUISITE COURSES
In the first semester four prerequisite courses offer you an advanced insight into the theories of social sciences that are crucial for the understanding, definition and solution of marketing problems.

The Marketing Research course gives you a set of tools and models that are essential for the design and evaluation of empirical studies that can support decisions in the marketing policy areas. The course will cover major research tasks and methods including the construction of questionnaires, scale development, observational methods, response models and choice models.

The Marketing in Context course enable students to identify and analyse the stakeholders, flows and interactions, which are impacted by and which impacts on particular changes in the boundary conditions of a marketing system. Also, you will be able to analyse macro-marketing environments and marketing systems in order to develop strategies, which further the aims of the focal stakeholders, whether these are private companies, governmental and/or non-governmental organisation.

Economics of Strategy
This course studies how firms create a competitive advantage and maintain it, and analyses strategic choices regarding the boundaries of the firm, the incentive mechanisms and the organisational structure that will best serve their strategies.

The Economic Psychology covers the fundamentals of human behaviour in economic contexts, from a social cognition perspective as well as from a judgment and decision-making perspective. The course applies fundamental theories and methods to key areas in marketing, including consumer and industrial buyer behaviour, marketing management, pricing, communication, innovation, and relationship marketing.

SPECIALISATION COURSES
The second semester comprises the following compulsory specialisation courses

Marketing Communication discusses the role of communication as well as of how the integration of several communication tools may support to achievement of the overall goal of the firm’s communication strategy.

Pricing Strategy provides an introduction to the firm’s pricing problem and provides practical techniques to understanding price setting in the context of the firm’s customers, costs and competition.

Innovation Management focuses on understanding the challenges, mechanisms and approaches for the management of innovation.

Managing Marketing Channels and Networks presents the concepts and analytical tools needed to design, build and manage distribution channels and networks.

Customer Relationship Management provides an insight into the theoretical and conceptual foundations of CRM, how CRM can enhance organisational performance and the role of measuring and managing customer satisfaction, customer loyalty and customer profitability.

Marketing Management and Strategy ends the semester by focusing on marketing management from a strategic perspective, combining and linking all policy areas to decision-making at top management level.

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the AU Summer University or at one of our more than 300 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

The fourth semester is devoted to the final thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and so get a chance to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted, it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.

Module Details

Financial Econometrics

Econometrics is a core tool used in the study of finance. The aim of this unit is to give you a strong practical understanding of the econometric tools you will be using throughout your study of finance. The teaching philosophy is to take an applied approach, to provide you with a strong intuitive understanding of the most important statistical techniques, and how to apply them successfully to a wide variety of practical situations in finance using the main statistical packages, such as Eviews and SPSS. Many of the econometric techniques covered are used and applied in other units in the course, to help you gain a good practical understanding of how to apply them in the practice of financial management.

Derivatives: Options, Futures and Swaps Markets

In this unit you will study the main derivatives securities and markets, options, forwards, futures and swaps. The emphasis is on the study of derivatives pricing models and how these are applied in speculation, hedging, arbitrage and price discovery in financial investments as well as in the measurement and management of financial risks. In finance some models work better than others. The pricing models and techniques developed in derivatives work so well that all professionals working in derivatives markets use these models and techniques all the time, every day. In this unit you will acquire a high degree of theoretical understanding and practical competence in using and applying these techniques.

Corporate Finance and Business Valuation

In this unit you will study the primary financial decisions of the firm, working capital management, advanced capital budgeting techniques, the strategic analysis of capital investment decisions, capital structure theories, and the financing and dividend decisions. Theories will be appraised in the context of empirical research to facilitate critical understanding of the issues. In the second half of this unit you will move on to the advanced study of business valuation. The main focus is on providing a strong practical understanding, and on the application of the key professional techniques used in firm valuation, mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings and private equity transactions.

Portfolio Theory and Behavioural Finance

In the first half of this unit we look at stock markets and bond markets from the rational perspective. Here you will study the standard material of ‘modern portfolio theory’. In the second half of the unit we move on to behavioural finance, looking at the emotional, cognitive, institutional, and agency theory factors that impact upon financial markets. Topics include stock market booms and busts, financial crises, systematically irrational market behaviours, and the investment strategies that have been devised to exploit them. The unit has a strong practical philosophy. The theory, empirical research and analysis of real data that you will study are designed to help you to become a better investor.

Research Methods and Dissertation

This is a scheme of independent research. We offer comprehensive training through lectures and workshops throughout the year to develop skills commensurate with standards of good research practice. You will be assigned a Dissertation supervisor who will provide feedback, guidance and support on an individual basis.

Programme Assessment

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, computer-based workshops, invited speakers and live case studies. The practical and quantitative skills that you will develop on the programme will equip you to meet this challenge.

Our compulsory modules provide a firm grounding in probability theory, stochastic calculus, derivatives pricing, quantitative and numerical methods, structuring products, volatility analysis, and the modelling of credit, equity, foreign exchange and interest rate derivatives. We also provide a thorough training in C++ and other programming tools.

Optional modules will allow you to focus on risk analysis, portfolio management, designing trading strategies or econometric analysis. This newly structured degree aims to further enhance the strong reputation of its precursor – the MSc in Financial Engineering and Quantitative Analysis, which was established back in 1999. A good background in mathematics is required for acceptance to this programme.

EMPLOYABILITY

Many of our financial engineering graduates are now working as Quants in large London banks and other financial institutions. Others have pursued PhDs and have successful academic careers. Financial instruments are becoming ever more sophisticated, so graduates that understand complex modelling techniques are always in great demand. The high quantitative content of this programme opens many doors to a wide range of careers. You could structure and develop new debt or equity solutions to meet clients funding and hedging needs, or you could become a proprietary trader in exotic derivatives, or a software specialist or a quantitative analyst supporting the traders.

There are excellent opportunities on the buy-side, with hedge funds and investment institutions, as well as in investment banking and in software analytics. Opportunities in quantitative research, or with a rating agency, are among the many other attractive alternatives. In particular it will introduce the probability and stochastics often not included in standard mathematics degrees.

Following the Financial Crisis of 2007-2009 there has been a shift in the practice of mathematical finance. The emphasis is now on possessing a broad range of skills that can be applied to practical problems. The aim is to understand, both quantitatively and qualitatively, risks and uncertainty involved.

The MSc focuses on practical computational and applied mathematics aspects of finance and uncertainty, and students graduating from the programme will have excellent employment prospects that are not restricted to any one narrow sector of financial services.

Financial Econometrics

Econometrics is a core tool used in the study of finance. This unit will give you a strong practical understanding of the econometric tools you will be using throughout your study of finance. We take an applied approach to provide you with an intuitive understanding of a range of econometric techniques and their applications to a wide variety of problem-solving situations in finance. You will gain extensive experience with econometric and statistical packages such as Eviews and SPSS. Your work in this unit is supported by lectures, tutorials and workshops. Many of the econometric techniques covered in this unit are used and applied in other units in the course, to help you gain a good understanding of how to apply them successfully to the theory and practice of financial management.

Multinational Corporate Financial Management

In this unit you will study international finance from the corporate perspective. The first half of the unit focuses on the primary financial decisions of the firm, working capital management, advanced capital budgeting techniques, the strategic analysis of capital investment decisions, capital structure theories, and the financing and dividend decisions. Corporate financial management in a multinational context introduces many new problems, challenges and opportunities. The second half of the unit the focuses on corporate financial management from the global and international perspective. Topics you will study include the measurement and management of currency and interest rate risks, taxation, regulatory and political risks, mergers and acquisitions, and the international capital investment, financing and dividend decisions.

International Money and Capital Markets

This unit covers international finance from the securities and markets perspective, and complements the unit on Multinational Corporate Financial Management. You will study the currency and Eurocurrency markets, the international equity, fixed income and derivatives markets, financial institutions, financial regulation, and the models used to price the financial securities trading in these markets. The topics in the International Money and Capital Markets unit are developed with a strong emphasis on their applications to multinational corporate financial management.

Derivatives: Options, Futures and Swaps Markets

In this unit you will study the main derivatives securities and markets, options, forwards, futures and swaps. The emphasis is on the study of derivatives pricing models and how these are applied in speculation, hedging, arbitrage and price discovery in financial investments as well as in the measurement and management of financial risks. In finance some models work better than others. The pricing models and techniques developed in derivatives work so well that all professionals working in derivatives markets use these models and techniques all the time, every day. In this unit you will acquire a high degree of theoretical understanding and practical competence in using and applying these techniques.

Research Methods and Dissertation

This is a scheme of independent research. We offer comprehensive training via lectures and workshops throughout the year to develop skills commensurate with standards of good research practice. You will be assigned a Dissertation supervisor who will provide feedback, guidance and support on an individual basis.

Programme Assessment

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, computer-based workshops, invited speakers and live case studies. Student participation is encouraged and classes are challenging but informal and friendly, which promotes discussion and debate. The course tutors are available to support your studies and you will also have a personal tutor to provide help and guidance for any problems that you might have.
