In today's workplace, HR professionals must tackle many different employment issues. Southampton Solent University’s postgraduate human resource management programme offers students an in-depth understanding of HR management functions and the business contexts that underpin them.

Students will find out how professional development can contribute to enhanced performance within an organisation; how internal and external factors can affect success, and how people are managed within contemporary businesses. Membership into the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development is built into the course. To earn this membership, students will need to complete a six week work experience project and write a management research report. The human resource management teaching team can help students to secure these placements throughout the year.

Students also graduate with a range of transferable skills. These include communication, presentation, research and analysis, teamwork, training, networking, coaching and mentoring.

Course Content

Teaching, learning and assessment -

This course is taught through a mix of group work, individual study, case studies, lectures and seminars. Students are supported in their research by an individual supervisor and mentor.

Work experience -

You’ll have the opportunity to undertake a six-week work placement. During this placement, you’ll work on live projects for companies and produce a research project for your CIPD accreditation.

Past students have completed placements and projects with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the NHS, Sainsbury’s, the University of Winchester and many other organisations.

Assessment -

Assessment methods vary across units and include written assignments, skills and exams.

Fast-track marketing management MA/MSc

A fast-track route to the Marketing Management MA qualification is available for holders of the CIM Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing (or equivalent). Holders of this qualification will be exempt from all but two modules:
-For MA: Marketing Creativity and Innovation Marketing Dissertation
-For MSc: Quantitative Analysis for Marketing and Management Marketing Dissertation

The fees will be proportional to the number of credits studied. Dissertation (40 credits) Quantitative Analysis for Marketing Management (20 credits).

Accredited internship

All students on our full-time business Masters courses can apply to undertake the PG/MBA Internship Programme Reflective Practitioner Module. This is an 8 week unpaid accredited internship, which can be taken in addition to option modules and will help students to gain invaluable work experience. The internships, which are with London-based organisations, take place during the summer period. To apply, students must submit a completed application form and a copy of their updated CV to the Business Experience Team; the team then shortlist from the applications and conduct group meetings with the applicants.

Ultimately it is up to our internship employers to decide whether they would like to interview the candidate(s) and offer him/her an internship. We have received very positive feedback from both postgraduate students and employers and expect that the internship programme will continue to remain popular amongst our students.

The course

Working with the UK’s meat industry, and with the support of The Worshipful Company of Butchers, Harper Adams University has developed a Postgraduate course in Meat Business Management designed to provide staff from the meat industry with the knowledge and skills required to increase the effectiveness, efficiency and profitability of their employers’ businesses and to develop their own career potential within the meat industry.

Many factors limit and threaten the success and security of the meat industry, and not least the ability of the industry to attract and retain staff with the right knowledge and skills. Being able to develop and maintain a resource of appropriately experienced, knowledgeable and qualified supervisory and management staff must be a primary strategic objective for any meat business as the success and growth of such businesses depends on possessing capable and appropriately educated staff. Equally, the long term stability of meat businesses relies on effective and achievable management succession planning which in itself requires access to staff who have the ability to grow into more senior roles and become the business leaders of the future.

How will it benefit me?

The course has been developed in recognition of the meat industry’s need to develop existing, experienced staff – not necessarily graduate staff – and also to provide a means by which new, graduate staff can gain an understanding of the topics required to operate a meat business successfully. The course has been designed expressly to meet the needs of businesses in the red meat sector of the UK’s meat industry, i.e. principally businesses involved in the production of beef, mutton and lamb, and pork, and associated products. The course is a meat business management course and not a meat science course. This means that much of the subject matter covered by the course will have relevance to other meat sectors, e.g. the white meat or poultry meat sector, and indeed other food processing and manufacturing businesses. Much of the knowledge required to run a food business is transferable and applicable to any kind of food business. This means that topics such as operations management, food quality management, food safety management, and supply chain management apply equally to red meat businesses as they do to other types of food processing and manufacturing business. The successful practise of management (and successful career development) in any food business depends significantly on acquisition of the required knowledge, from whatever source, and its appropriate application in the development and growth of the business with, importantly, increased profitability.

Cost

The tuition price of each taught module is £1,200 + VAT (residential accommodation and meals are additional), however funding for the tuition fee may be available through the Advanced Agri-Food Training Partnership. Financial Econometrics

Econometrics is a core tool used in the study of finance. This unit will give you a strong practical understanding of the econometric tools you will be using throughout your study of finance. We take an applied approach to provide you with an intuitive understanding of a range of econometric techniques and their applications to a wide variety of problem-solving situations in finance. You will gain extensive experience with econometric and statistical packages such as Eviews and SPSS. Your work in this unit is supported by lectures, tutorials and workshops. Many of the econometric techniques covered in this unit are used and applied in other units in the course, to help you gain a good understanding of how to apply them successfully to the theory and practice of financial management.

Multinational Corporate Financial Management

In this unit you will study international finance from the corporate perspective. The first half of the unit focuses on the primary financial decisions of the firm, working capital management, advanced capital budgeting techniques, the strategic analysis of capital investment decisions, capital structure theories, and the financing and dividend decisions. Corporate financial management in a multinational context introduces many new problems, challenges and opportunities. The second half of the unit the focuses on corporate financial management from the global and international perspective. Topics you will study include the measurement and management of currency and interest rate risks, taxation, regulatory and political risks, mergers and acquisitions, and the international capital investment, financing and dividend decisions.

International Money and Capital Markets

This unit covers international finance from the securities and markets perspective, and complements the unit on Multinational Corporate Financial Management. You will study the currency and Eurocurrency markets, the international equity, fixed income and derivatives markets, financial institutions, financial regulation, and the models used to price the financial securities trading in these markets. The topics in the International Money and Capital Markets unit are developed with a strong emphasis on their applications to multinational corporate financial management.

Derivatives: Options, Futures and Swaps Markets

In this unit you will study the main derivatives securities and markets, options, forwards, futures and swaps. The emphasis is on the study of derivatives pricing models and how these are applied in speculation, hedging, arbitrage and price discovery in financial investments as well as in the measurement and management of financial risks. In finance some models work better than others. The pricing models and techniques developed in derivatives work so well that all professionals working in derivatives markets use these models and techniques all the time, every day. In this unit you will acquire a high degree of theoretical understanding and practical competence in using and applying these techniques.

Research Methods and Dissertation

This is a scheme of independent research. We offer comprehensive training via lectures and workshops throughout the year to develop skills commensurate with standards of good research practice. You will be assigned a Dissertation supervisor who will provide feedback, guidance and support on an individual basis.

Programme Assessment

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, computer-based workshops, invited speakers and live case studies. Student participation is encouraged and classes are challenging but informal and friendly, which promotes discussion and debate. What makes our Department different is the equally strong research in fluid mechanics, scientific computation and statistics.

The quality of research at the postgraduate level is reflected in the scholarly achievements of faculty members, many of whom are recognized as leading authorities in their fields. Research programs often involve collaboration with scholars at an international level, especially in the European, North American and Chinese universities. Renowned academics also take part in the Department's regular colloquia and seminars. The faculty comprises several groups: Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Probability and Statistics.

The MPhil program seeks to strengthen students' general background in mathematics and mathematical sciences, and to expose students to the environment and scope of mathematical research. Submission and successful defense of a thesis based on original research are required.

Research Foci

Algebra and Number Theory
The theory of Lie groups, Lie algebras and their representations play an important role in many of the recent development in mathematics and in the interaction of mathematics with physics. Our research includes representation theory of reductive groups, Kac-Moody algebras, quantum groups, and conformal field theory. Number theory has a long and distinguished history, and the concepts and problems relating to the theory have been instrumental in the foundation of a large part of mathematics. Number theory has flourished in recent years, as made evident by the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. Our research specializes in automorphic forms.

Analysis and Differential Equations
The analysis of real and complex functions plays a fundamental role in mathematics. This is a classical yet still vibrant subject that has a wide range of applications. Differential equations are used to describe many scientific, engineering and economic problems. The theoretical and numerical study of such equations is crucial in understanding and solving problems. Our research areas include complex analysis, exponential asymptotics, functional analysis, nonlinear equations and dynamical systems, and integrable systems.

Geometry and Topology
Geometry and topology provide an essential language describing all kinds of structures in Nature. The subject has been vastly enriched by close interaction with other mathematical fields and with fields of science such as physics, astronomy and mechanics. The result has led to great advances in the subject, as highlighted by the proof of the Poincaré conjecture. Active research areas in the Department include algebraic geometry, differential geometry, low-dimensional topology, equivariant topology, combinatorial topology, and geometrical structures in mathematical physics.

Numerical Analysis
The focus is on the development of advance algorithms and efficient computational schemes. Current research areas include: parallel algorithms, heterogeneous network computing, graph theory, image processing, computational fluid dynamics, singular problems, adaptive grid method, rarefied flow simulations.

Applied Sciences
The applications of mathematics to interdisciplinary science areas include: material science, multiscale modeling, mutliphase flows, evolutionary genetics, environmental science, numerical weather prediction, ocean and coastal modeling, astrophysics and space science.

Probability and Statistics
Statistics, the science of collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting data, is an essential tool in a wide variety of academic disciplines as well as for business, government, medicine and industry. Our research is conducted in four categories. Time Series and Dependent Data: inference from nonstationarity, nonlinearity, long-memory behavior, and continuous time models. Resampling Methodology: block bootstrap, bootstrap for censored data, and Edgeworth and saddle point approximations. Stochastic Processes and Stochastic Analysis: filtering, diffusion and Markov processes, and stochastic approximation and control. Survival Analysis: survival function and errors in variables for general linear models. Probability current research includes limit theory.

Financial Mathematics
This is one of the fastest growing research fields in applied mathematics. International banking and financial firms around the globe are hiring science PhDs who can use advanced analytical and numerical techniques to price financial derivatives and manage portfolio risks. The trend has been accelerating in recent years on numerous fronts, driven both by substantial theoretical advances as well as by a practical need in the industry to develop effective methods to price and hedge increasingly complex financial instruments. Current research areas include pricing models for exotic options, the development of pricing algorithms for complex financial derivatives, credit derivatives, risk management, stochastic analysis of interest rates and related models.

Facilities

The Department enjoys a range of up-to-date facilities and equipment for teaching and research purposes. It has two computer laboratories and a Math Support Center equipped with 100 desktop computers for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Department also provides an electronic homework system and a storage cloud system to enhance teaching and learning.

To assist computations that require a large amount of processing power in the research area of scientific computation, a High Performance Computing (HPC) laboratory equipped with more than 200 high-speed workstations and servers has been set up. With advanced parallel computing technologies, these powerful computers are capable of delivering 17.2 TFLOPS processing power to solve computationally intensive problems in our innovative research projects. Such equipment helps our faculty and postgraduate students to stay at the forefront of their fields. Research projects in areas such as astrophysics, computational fluid dynamics, financial mathematics, mathematical modeling and simulation in materials science, molecular simulation, numerical ocean modeling, numerical weather prediction and numerical methods for micromagnetics simulations all benefit from our powerful computing facilities.

To effectively use this technology requires a large number of people to apply and manage the technology. The price of the technology has reduced significantly since the inception of data warehousing with Microsoft and Oracle supplying the appropriate add-on tools to their database management system products. These factors allow smaller organisations to gain a competitive advantage by utilising the large pool of transactional data that in some cases has been stored for many years.

In an industrial context, students may be required to manage teams of developers in small to large scale projects. To efficiently manage such projects, they will require a significant technical understanding of the issues arising to be able to appreciate the complexity of the tasks to be undertaken.

Indeed, in an SME this role is often fulfilled by a senior member of the development staff with both development and management duties. As either a developer or manager, the graduate would be expected to demonstrate their initiative and be able to use their research skills to rapidly adapt to the demands of new technology.

Assessment

Student works are assessed through combination of course works, lab based practical exams and written exam. The final mark for some modules may include one or more pieces of course work set and completed during the module. Project work is assessed by a written report and oral presentation. Part 2 of the MSc programme requires the student to research and prepare an individual project/dissertation of a substantial nature.

University students who are unable to successfully complete all aspects of the Part 1 may be eligible for a Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) or Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits).

- Energy in the 21st Century
This course is designed to give you a broad understanding of the environmental, political and socio-economic context for current developments in renewable energy. The course examines the extent of current energy resources and how energy markets function. It covers some energy basics you will need for the rest of the programme (e.g. thermodynamics, efficiency conversions) as well as environmental issues associated with energy use, climate change and the political and policy challenges involved in managing energy supply and achieving energy security.

- Economics of renewable energy
This course gives an understanding of the economic principles and mechanisms which affect energy markets today. It covers price mechanisms, the economics of extracting energy and the cost-efficiency of renewable energy technologies. You will learn about economic instruments used by policy-makers to address environment and energy issues, economic incentives to stimulate renewable energy development and about environmental valuation.

- Environmental Policy & Risk
This course explores the legal and policy context in which renewable energy is being exploited. You will gain an understanding of international law, particularly the Law of the Sea, property rights and how these relate to different energy resources. The course also looks at regulatory issues at the international, European and UK level, which affect how energy developments are taken forward, as well as risk assessment and management in the context of renewable energy developments.

- Environmental Processes
Particularly for those without a natural science background, this course provides a broad overview of the environmental processes which are fundamental to an understanding of renewable energy resources and their exploitation. You will study energy flows in the environment, environmental disturbance associated with energy use, and an introduction to the science of climate change. You will also learn about ecosystems and ecological processes including population dynamics and how ecosystems affect and interact with energy generation.

- Renewable Technology I: Generation
This course explores how energy is extracted from natural resources: solar, biomass, hydro, wind, wave and tide. It examines how to assess and measure the resources, and the engineering solutions which have been developed to extract energy from them. You will develop an understanding of the technical challenges and current issues affecting the future development of the renewable energy sector.

- Renewable Technology II: Integration
This course explores the technical aspects of generating renewable energy and integrating it into distribution networks. You will learn about the electricity grid and how electrical power and distribution systems work. You will find out about different renewable fuel sources and end uses, and the challenges of energy storage.

- Development Appraisal
Looking at what happens when renewable energy technologies are deployed, this course examines development constraints and opportunities: policy and regulatory issues (including strategic environmental assessment, environmental impact assessment, landscape assessment, capacity issues and the planning system). It also looks at the financial aspects (valuation of capital assets, financing projects and the costs of generating electricity) and at project management.

- Development Project
This is a team project, where students have the opportunity to apply what they have learned through the other courses in relation to a hypothetical project. You have to look at a range of issues including resource assessment, site selection, development layout, consents, planning and economic appraisal, applying the knowledge and tools you have studied.

- Optional design project
For students who can demonstrate existing knowledge covered by one of the courses, there is the option of understanding a design project supervised by one of our engineers.

- Dissertation
This research project (equivalent in assessment to 4 taught courses) allows you to focus on a specific area of interest, with opportunities to collaborate with businesses and other stakeholders. You choose your dissertation subject, in discussion with your supervisor.

This specialist course gives you a thorough understanding of the full range of quantitative methods needed for financial decision making.
– Learn how to forecast and manage risk and return
– Gain the skills to price any financial instrument
– Learn how to engineer new methods and financial products
– Build advanced knowledge of the main theoretical and applied concepts in quantitative finance, financial engineering and risk management, using current issues to stimulate your thinking

Summer period
Dissertation (60 credits)
– Apply what you have learned in the taught part of the course
– Dissertations are supervised by both an academic expert and an industry practitioner
– Topics are aligned with the research interests of leading financial institutions from the City of London and internationally
– Industry-linked topics are subject to strict selection criteria (for example, quality of research proposal, strong CV and first semester exam performance).
