Each of the 6 modules have the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Students are split into groups of 10-15 students and are assigned a dedicated expert tutor who:

Biostatistics is the science of analyzing and interpreting biomedical data. As a discipline it is driven by a strong interaction between problems from biomedical research and rigorous mathematical analysis. Complex scientific challenges require the development of new and appropriate statistical methods. Currently such challenges emerge, for example, in environmental and infectious disease epidemiology, personalized and evidence-based medicine and molecular life sciences, especially genomics, proteomics, epigenomics.

The Master Program in Biostatistics of the Univeristy of Zurich is specialized master program, hence it is a useful and direct continuation of a bachelor degree in all fields that include quantitative aspects, e.g. mathematics, physics, biology, computer science etc. Students interested and talented in logical reasoning, quantitative analysis, interdisciplinary science and research in the life sciences in general are suitable candidates for the program.

The program is based on the cooperation between the Institute of Mathematics in the Faculty of Science and the Division of Biostatistics of the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine. This broad basis allows to offer an education which provides graduates besides a classical training in biostatistics with a vast perspective on statistical approaches and challenges in the life sciences. It is the only - to date - specialized program for the training of biostatisticians in Switzerland. The entire program is taught in English.

Applications are expected by September 15 of the previous year for the spring semester and by February 15 of the same year for the fall semester. It enables students to gain core knowledge and skills in epidemiology and biostatistics methods, health services and policy research, or population health to develop research experience by applying these methodologies to a research project under the supervision of a supervisory committee.

The minimum requirement for an M.Sc. is 30 credits, including 13.5 credits of core courses plus the M.Sc. thesis (12 credits). However, the actual courses required are at the discretion of program supervisors; often the number of credits required ranges between 36 and 42.

It is particularly designed for clinical pharmacologists in training, specialist trainees in accident and emergency medicine or acute medicine and other disciplines, and those intending to enter or already working in the pharmaceutical industry.

The MSc in Medical Toxicology consists of one stage (post-diploma) – “stage R” (research dissertation stage), which lasts for one year and will include a dissertation of 60 credits at Level 7, to achieve a combined total of 180 credits (including 120 credits from the Cardiff University Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Toxicology) to achieve the MSc.

Your dissertation, which will normally be of not more than 20,000 words and supported by such other material as may be considered appropriate to the subject, will embody the results of your period of project work. The subject of each student’s dissertation will be approved by the Chair of the Board of Studies concerned or his/her nominee.

The dissertation is worth 60 credits and, in combination with the Postgraduate Diploma taught stage(s), is weighted 50% for the purpose of calculating the final mark:

The master programme Health Economics consists of 120 ECTS- (European Credit Transfer System) Points and is designed as a 4-semester full-time programme. It is a consecutive master degree based on a bachelor degree within the field of health economics.
The Core and Advanced Section of the master programme Health Economics contains 48 credit points. This area covers the basics of health economics.
The Specialisation Section, where students altogether complete 36 credit points, includes seminars as well as specialisation modules in health economics and medicine.
In the Supplementary Section, at least one module from economics and/or sociology has to be completed. Furthermore, to accomplish the required 18 credit points within this section, further modules from business administration and/or medicine have to be completed.

This course provides ophthalmic professionals with the knowledge and skills required to reduce blindness and visual disability in their populations by developing an evidence-based public health approach for the control and management of blinding eye diseases. It enables students to contribute effectively at a local, national and international level in research, training and service delivery.

Project Report:
During the summer months (July - August), students complete a research project on an appropriate topic. Students undertaking projects overseas will require additional funding of about £1,500 to cover costs involved.

Programme description

If you are interested in the development of dance education, a comprehensive understanding of the science underpinning the art form is a must. This innovative programme - the only one of its kind in Scotland - offers just that, giving you the scientific theory and specialist skills that will inspire you to push the frontiers of dance and dance education.

As you study the science relevant to dance performance and education, you will have access to resources at:

Through a multi-disciplinary blend of theory and practice, you will learn to prepare dancers to improve performance, explore the physiological and developmental issues that relate to dance education and training, and develop awareness of changing trends.

The programme is offered as:

  • Master of Science, which can be completed over 12 months (full time) or 24-72 months (part time)
  • Postgraduate diploma, which can be completed over 9 months (full time) or 12-48 months (part time)

Dance Science & Education with teaching pathway to registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS)

Many dance teachers work in school and community contexts, however, it is a legal requirement for any teacher teaching in the Scottish state school system to be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). Being registered not only allows an individual to teach but it also provides assurances to employers, parents and children that teachers meet a national standard of teaching.

The MSc Dance Science and Education now has a teaching pathway to registration with the GTCS, which was accredited in June 2015. On successful completion of this degree students are recommended by the University to the GTCS for provisional registration. Upon completion of the required probationary period of teaching graduates from this degree will further register with the GTCS as a teacher with a subject specialism in dance. This is currently the only route to GTCS registration as a teacher for dance specialists qualified to teach learners aged 3-18 years in schools.

The programme is offered as a Master of Science (SCQF level 11) and can be completed over 15 months (full time) or 24 months (part time). It is not available as a Postgraduate diploma.

Programme structure

Your learning will incorporate a variety of approaches including lectures, student-led seminars, presentations and, where appropriate, practical skills training and project work.

Compulsory courses:

  • Preventive Dance Medicine
  • Research Methods x 3

You will also choose 40 credits of optional courses from a range that are offered at Moray House School of Education and may include for example:

  • Coaching and performance
  • Psychology for physical activity
  • Nutritional factors and ergogenic aids
  • Physical activity for health
  • Pediatric factors in sport
  • Assessment of physical activity and body composition
  • Peak performance
  • Stress and coping in performance
  • Planning and instruction for performance
  • Physio-mechanical aspects of resistance training
  • Conditioning physiology

Additional options may be chosen from courses offered by relevant schools within the University, subject to approval.

On completion of your courses, you may choose to progress to the MSc, which will include the production of an independently researched dissertation.

For the GTCS accredited teaching pathway, there are no optional courses, but there is an additional compulsory course:

  • The Professional Development and Leadership in Dance Teaching (PDLDT)

Whether you are a recent graduate or a mid-career professional, this programme will prepare you for further research, which can be channelled into an academic career or used to advance your performing or educational career. The transferable skills you gain, such as communication and project management, will also be valuable in enhancing any career options.

Working under the supervision of a doctor, a physician associate works in a clinical setting consulting with patients in person and by telephone.

You will perform:
-Taking medical histories
-Performing examinations
-Diagnosing illnesses
-Analysing test results
-Counsel on preventive health care

This programme is an intense 90-week programme taught over two years to achieve a PGDip.

Learning and teaching includes 1600 hours of clinical rotations in Hospitals and Community General Medical Practices. There is a strong public health theme to the programme, with students committed to promoting health and wellbeing in order to prevent illness. There is also a technological theme to the programme with students developing skills in digital health and health informatics.

The programme is designed for clinicians, graduate scientists and other medical professionals working in a clinical, industrial or academic research environment. It is of interest to those with a first degree in other Health and Life Science subjects such as Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Medical Sciences, Nursing, Osteopathy and Occupational Therapy, who are interested in a career related to Medicine.

Candidates must pass the national exam before they can practice as a Physician Associate.

The programme is intensive. To achieve the qualification required to enter this profession, which is at Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) level, your programme is delivered over two years and you are expected to attend full time for 45 weeks of each year with approximately 50% of this time spent on clinical placement in local hospitals and GP practices.

Students with a PGDip Physician Associate Studies are eligible to sit the national examination to qualify as a physician associate; this programme prepares you to pass that examination.

You can also achieve a higher award of a Master's in Science (MSc) Physician Associate Studies. This would typically be over an additional 12 month period, where you would undertake a clinical, research-focused dissertation based on their practice as a qualified Physician Associate.

This is a fully integrated course, by this we mean that our teaching of the biomedical, clinical and pharmacological sciences is always framed around the application to the clinical practice of working as a physician associate. You will be taught by a range of healthcare professionals both in the classroom and on clinical practice, including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, and of course on clinical placements there are even further opportunities to work in an interprofessional environment. There are also numerous opportunities to work with patients, service users and carers who are involved in classroom teaching sessions.

The programme includes a variety of teaching, learning and assessment methods. It is learner-centred and uses enquiry-based learning, team based learning and problem based learning. Throughout the course we focus on outcomes (what you will be doing in future roles), using case-based and patient centred learning tasks and incorporating clinical placements from the beginning. We are focused on local healthcare needs, and have integrated public health and digital health technologies themes running throughout the course.

Career support and prospects

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. An annual census is carried out by the Faculty of Physician Associates and provides a useful overview of the wide ranging roles currently undertaking.

The number of Physician Associates is likely to grow as the NHS seeks solutions to the workload pressures on A&E Departments and GP Surgeries. In the Yorkshire region, we expect career prospects for Physician Associates to be good as the region is currently experiencing reduced GP and speciality trainee recruitment. The University of Bradford is working with our placement providers to plan for future employment prospects for our students.

Typically, upon qualification Physician Associates can expect a starting salary at Band 6 or 7 in the NHS Agenda for Change pay rates.
