DBS CHECKS

Throughout this course you will be working with vulnerable groups of individuals including children. The School of Nursing is one of the largest providers of healthcare education in the North West region and as a result we have developed close links with healthcare providers across the whole of the central Lancashire area including NHS Trusts across Preston & Fylde Coast; Fleetwood & Blackpool; Blackburn; Burnley; Chorley; Southport & Ormskirk, and many more. We can also place students with private healthcare providers, independent and voluntary sector organisations, and these learning environments provide our students with a unique insight into how healthcare is managed in all settings, not just within the NHS.

All clinical placement providers are audited according to the Nursing & Midwifery Council professional regulatory requirements for learning & teaching in clinical practice and each area has a dedicated member of academic staff attached to the placement, so that students may access support and advice. Academic staff work in close contact with the NHS Trust Practice Education Facilitators and the development of these close links with practice partners enable our students to feel confident that their practice experiences are supported throughout their course.

As part of your clinical experiences you can expect to work full-time alongside a clinical mentor who will support your learning journey throughout each placement area. All students are expected to work closely with their mentors which may entail a range of different shift patterns throughout the year.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION

Successful completion of the course will lead to professional registration as a nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Council.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The programme will be delivered within the UCLan Preston campus, with placement experiences being provided within NHS and independent clinical practice settings.

The student’s performance will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods, which will include:
-Written assignments e.g. essay, critical dialogue
-Creative assessments e.g. storyboard
-Practice-related assessments e.g. OSCEs (Observed Structured Clinical Examination), DONAs (Direct Observation of Nursing Activities), practice competencies

OPPORTUNITIES

This programme will include 2 x 9 – 12 week placements within health care settings in each academic year, during which the student will develop and demonstrate a series of practice competencies.

There will be an opportunity to undertake a 4-week international placement in the latter part of Year 2 of the programme.

The MSc Nursing Studies (Pre-registration) aims to equip graduate student nurses with advanced critical thinking skills, as well as the practical skills and competencies to deliver compassionate, competent, person-centred, effective, safe and high quality health care. This course in detail

You will focus on developing a knowledge base in children’s nursing, which is evidence-based and strongly underpinned by research.

During Year 1 you will undertake modules at Level 6 (honours level), and in the subsequent two years your modules will be at Level 7 (masters degree level). You may be able to complete the degree in less that three years if you offer evidence of relevant prior learning (AP(E)L). This may have been achieved through relevant degree level study and/or experience. If you wish to study part-time, you can complete the degree over a maximum duration of five years.

You will develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of children’s nursing. This will be informed by scholarship and research as well as critical awareness of current issues/development in the field. You will acquire specific skills, knowledge and competence in relation to children’s nursing. Your learning will be enquiry focused, helping you to develop as a reflective, innovative, confident and self-aware practitioner.

You will complete a master’s-level research project involving primary data collection; a critical review of the literature; or other scholarly output.

Teaching and learning

Oxford Brookes teaches a very wide range of pre-qualification and foundation courses including health and social care, nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, osteopathy, operating department practice, paramedic emergency care, and social work. You will share your learning with these other health care students. This is a key component of the course as it is essential to developing your teamwork skills and your understanding of the other roles you will encounter in practice.

The MSc in Adult and Mental Health Nursing prepares you for a rewarding career at the forefront of modern healthcare. You will graduate as a nurse eligible to register with the NMC as an adult and mental health nurse, leaving you equipped to support the delivery of quality healthcare in a contemporary health service.

Mental illness has a huge impact on the physical health of an individual. People with mental health conditions are at a higher risk of experiencing physical health problems, such as diabetes and heart conditions. In addition, people with long-term physical health conditions are more likely to suffer from a mental health issue, particularly depression. There is a need to develop a nursing workforce that is fit for the current demands of healthcare in the UK.

This Masters programme, where you will be eligible to apply for registration with the NMC as a registered nurse in the mental health and adult fields of nursing, will provide you with the opportunity to meet this demand.

Placements

You will spend around 50% of your time on clinical placements. Your practice experience will take place in a variety of settings such as specialist units, hospital wards and primary care settings such as Health Centres and patients/service users’ homes.

Most placements are within our 'community of practice', a partnership of healthcare providers within North East London - allowing you to become familiar with the needs of the local community and its healthcare providers.

Academic facilities

The Clinical Skills Centre at City offers excellent facilities for you to rehearse practical caring skills prior to your practice placement. You will have access to a simulated six-bed high-dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment. In addition, medium-fidelity simulators and laboratories, including a biology laboratory, allow you to rehearse skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and people's homes.

The School of Health Sciences is one of the first health schools in the UK to open a Technology Enabled Care Studio - City TECS. City TECS is specially designed studio flat at our Northampton Square campus, fully equipped with the latest telehealth and telecare technologies providing you with the unique opportunity to learn how to use the latest and future healthcare technologies while you study.

Teaching and learning

The teaching on the MSc course includes lecture, seminars, laboratory practicals, enquiry-based learning, practice experience, simulated practice, personal and professional development groups, meetings and online activities.

Assessment

Assessments are varied to meet the practice and academic challenges of the MSc, while recognising the need for motivating, realistic and relevant activity. The practice element is assessed by the development of a record of achievement in practice and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations. Modules are also assessed through essays, seminars or presentations.

As part of the MSc you are expected to complete a dissertation, this will involve a systematic literature review of integrated practice, which is the foundation of this programme and the future of contemporary nursing practice.

Your final degree classification is calculated from the first, second and final years.

Placement Opportunities

In order to provide excellent clinical learning experiences for our students, we work in partnership with the NHS and with the independent health and social care sector across Essex to provide placement opportunities.

Whilst on placement you will have a mentor allocated to you, and contact with a member of the academic team linked to that placement. You will work with experienced nurses in a diverse range of clinical settings (primary and secondary care, public and private sectors, adult and the elderly, acute care and specialist services).

Teaching and learning

We teach a very wide range of pre-qualification and foundation courses including health and social care, nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, osteopathy, operating department practice, paramedic emergency care, physiotherapy and social work. This is a key component of the course as it is essential in developing your teamwork skills and your understanding of the other roles you will encounter in practice.

Approach to assessment

You will be asked to produce a number of different types of written work throughout your study, including critical appraisals, reflective work and case studies. Some assignments will also require you to present work to faculty staff and peers.

Assessment of practice learning occurs both within the 'practice modules' - Professional Practice Experience (PPE) modules - and also in the 'practice-related' modules. All students have a Practice Assessment Document which contains a competency framework to assess practice.

As a postgraduate student with more highly developed academic skills and a self-directed approach, you are expected to work to produce material that is creative and original. You will be encouraged to try out the creative application of new or existing ideas or theory to address contemporary practice problems, health and social care policy or health and social care needs.

The term, ‘Specialist Nursing’ refers to, the exercising of higher levels of judgment and decision-making in relation to the nursing care of individuals, families and communities. As a future Leader you must display this higher level of decision-making across four areas; clinical practice, care and programme management, clinical practice development and clinical practice leadership.

- Format and assessment -

At Ulster we focus on developing you as a Leader and help you achieve academic and professional competence in all these areas. This programme is a 50-50 programme, meaning that 50% of the programme is university-based and 50% based in the practice learning setting. In the Practice Learning setting you will be allocated to a Sign-Off Mentor. This Sign-Off Mentor who is an established Specialist Nurse and Leader in Clinical Care will supervise you throughout the Programme. He/she will assess you and sign off your competencies prior to recording the professional qualification with the NMC. You will also be allocated to a Pathway Leader who will supervise your academic development and provide support throughout.

The academic component of the programme consists of four 30-credit modules:

- Research Module
- Leadership Module
- + Two Specialist Focus Modules, depending on your selected pathway.

District Nursing students have an additional 20 credits to complete in order to evidence outcomes related to Nurse Prescribing.

Our MSc Adult Nursing course has been designed for graduates with care experience who wish to develop a career as a registered nurse and join one of the most rewarding professions in health care. Our course will provide you with a wide range of experiences and prepare you to deliver high quality care with confidence. All of our pre-registration nursing courses are developed by nurses for nurses and will support you to work with health care teams to meet the needs of vulnerable adults requiring health care across a variety of settings. Learning and working at Masters level will support you to shape and improve your future profession and the health care experiences of patients in your care.

Adult nurses have a unique role within the healthcare setting. Making a positive change or improving the quality of people’s lives is a central tenet of this role. This may involve enabling people to improve, maintain, or recover their health, and to achieve the best possible quality of life, whatever the circumstances.

We are committed to the principles and values of the NHS Constitution (DH, 2013) and our Adult Nursing course promotes the behaviours and values that patients and staff believe to be at the heart of our NHS. The course places equal value on clinical practice and theory. It will take you from university lectures to clinical placement settings, from young to mature adults. You may well find yourself at a GP surgery, working with mulita-skilled teams in patients’ own homes or in the middle of a variety of hospital settings, from accident & emergency through to medical or surgical areas or providing compassionate care for patients with life limiting illnesses.

We’ll support you all the way. You’ll soon discover that our faculty is a stimulating place to learn, with modern facilities and registered, practising tutors who’ll make sure you’re being taught the latest techniques. We’re passionate about healthcare and dedicated to delivering the values set out by the NHS Constitution.

You’ll have the chance to share experiences and knowledge with other health care disciplines and to see how the professions work together.

Teaching on campus takes place between 9am and 7pm, Monday to Friday. On placement, you’ll be allocated to a mentor who will support your development and you’ll be expected to work the same shifts as the health care team and your mentor. Each week you will work 37.5 hours. This will include early, late and night shifts, as well as working weekends and bank holidays. Each year, five weeks’ of annual leave is built into the course at set points to support you in balancing your course and relaxation time.

Each of the two years is divided in three 30-credit modules. Each module will start with theory, followed by a hospital or community placement. A series of short Medicines Calculations modules are also embedded through the course.

Placements last around 5 weeks and will include both acute and community settings. Placement opportunities include: Older Person’s Care, Dementia Care, District Nursing, Surgical Setting, Acute Care Nursing and many more. Your final placement will be 12 weeks in length and you will also undertake additional placements each year which will enable you to explore other areas.

You’ll be linked to one of our NHS healthcare trust partners for your placements in hospitals or community settings.

If you study in Cambridge or Peterborough, you’ll do your placement in or around Cambridge, Huntingdon or Peterborough. You’ll get plenty of support from experienced mentors.

Our state of the art skills laboratories provide an ideal environment in which to learn a suite of practical skills in the safety of the university. This ensures that you gain understanding about the underpinning evidence that supports these skills, preparing you for the delivery of these skills in the practice setting.

In year 2 of the course you may choose the option to undertake an overseas placement and gain insight into another health care system.

All pre-registration nursing courses delivered by Anglia Ruskin University are approved by the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). On successful completion of the MSc Nursing course, you’ll be eligible to apply for registration with the NMC and join a profession with a wide range of opportunity. - Evidence Based Knowledge and Skills for Nursing:
This first module aims to prepare students for the knowledge and skills required to deliver fundamental and safe care. A series of key strands which underpin nursing practice will be commenced in this module including: patient safety; human anatomy and physiology; health promotion and the recognition of the nurse’s role in public health; mental health and common mental health problems; leadership skills and the use of research evidence that underpins care provision. Communication and interpersonal skills will also be considered including principles of de-escalation and the importance of sound interpersonal and professional skills in practice.

- Promoting Professional Practice in Nursing:
In this module students will be supported to understand the significance of prioritising patients as central to the role of the nurse and a key component of the NMC Code (2015). Person-centred care will be addressed through the exploration of patient autonomy and patients' rights. The concepts of advocacy, raising concerns and candour will provide students with an understanding of the legal and ethical parameters that support the delivery of safe care. The module builds on knowledge of bioscience and clinical skills to further enhance delivery of safe fundamental care. Introductions to leadership, management and team working will be provided.

- Nursing Adults with Challenging Health Needs:
This module addresses the complexities of long term conditions and palliative care for adult patients. Preventing the development of long term conditions and life-threatening disease, promoting health and wellbeing and supporting adults with long term conditions to live well independently are key aspects of the nurse’s role. Effective integrated care is critical to the patient experience and students will explore the impact of national drivers from a theoretical and practice based perspective, with a focus on the use and effectiveness of care pathways. This module provides the opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of the pathophysiology, pharmacology, clinical skills and ethical and legal issues to meet the challenges faced by those affected by long term and life limiting conditions.
- Medicine Calculations for Safe Practice 1

Year two, core modules -

- Ensuring the Safety of Patients Experiencing Acute Illness:
Patients become acutely unwell in clinical or home settings. This module will provide students with the knowledge, skills and experience to recognise, communicate and respond competently when a patient’s clinical condition indicates that they are becoming acutely unwell. Students will explore how psychological well-being can impact on recovery and the importance of patient focused care and empowerment. Alongside theory input students will participate in clinical scenarios around deteriorating patients (e.g. acute respiratory failure, acute coronary syndrome, and sepsis). Computer-controlled mannequins and simulation skills environments will be utilised to develop students’ skills in recognising and responding to patient deterioration.

- Decision Making, Leadership and Management in Nursing:
This theory/practice module enables students to enhance their leadership, peer coaching and decision making skills. The module aims to develop a varied and flexible repertoire of skills to be able to work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams, in the often challenging environments encountered in modern clinical practice. The module promotes students’ growth and expertise in professional knowledge and judgment, focusing on self-awareness and personal development. Development of key management skills of leadership, assertiveness, delegation and coaching will be provided as well as tools for resilience to withstand the stresses and pressures of practice.

- Major Project - MSc Nursing Adult:
This theory/practice module comprises a major project that is situated in and developed from the care setting. During the final practice placement, students will be expected to negotiate an area for service improvement to enhance the patient experience. This module will consolidate the knowledge, skills and attitudes gained in clinical management and leadership and seeks to complement these with insight to mechanisms for improving the quality of healthcare. Understanding and applying concepts of quality assurance, clinical governance, standard setting and the role of audit in maintaining standards will be key drivers.

The course provides the opportunity for those who have studied at undergraduate degree level in a health related subject, to undertake a two year full-time Master's course and upon successful completion receive eligibility for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered Nurse for mental health.

Being a mental health nurse requires patience and the ability to demonstrate empathy and listening skills, both on a one to one basis and within group settings. You will be provided with the opportunity to develop the intellectual, personal and professional skills required for practice in the mental health field and equips you to manage the very broad and complex range of problems the service users present with, including those with additional long-term physical health problems. This also helps you to provide holistic care to a broad range of service users, including children and young people within community and inpatient settings.

The course provides the opportunity for you to communicate effectively and develop your critical and analytical skills, preparing you to become a competent, caring, compassionate, courageous and committed registered nurse. As a student nurse you will utilise a person-centred approach to facilitate recovery of service users in a range of healthcare settings, including those who are acutely ill, those in rehabilitation services and those experiencing long-term conditions. Through the use of team and collaborative working practices you will also have the chance to learn how to utilise a partnership approach to your care of service users, their carers and family.

The intensive two year course comprises of 50% theory and 50% practice, where you will undertake placements in primary and secondary care settings. This consists of three stages, each comprising of two or three compulsory modules. Throughout the duration of the course you will undertake five theory modules and three theory/practice modules, most of which are shared with students from the other fields of nursing. Children's nurses work in partnership with the child/young person, their parents and carers, involving them in the planning and delivery of their child's care and treatment. Children's nurses, in collaboration with other professionals, strive to promote health in children and young people to ensure they enter into adulthood in good health.

This innovative and intensive two-year course aimed at students with an existing degree (2:2 or above) will equip you with the knowledge and skills to assess and manage the nursing care needs of children and families, including those with acute and long-term conditions. The course will also develop your abilities to consider the wider aspects influencing children's health needs, preparing you for future leadership in a changing and challenging health care system.

You'll experience a variety of clinical settings such as NHS acute Trusts, community placements, independent sector and voluntary sector organisations. You'll also have a placement within a community healthcare setting.

Placements

Time spent on placement
During the course you will spend 50% of your time involved in academic study and 50% in clinical practice within a broad variety of healthcare settings. A clinical practice placement allows you to put theory into practice by working with a range of health professionals in clinical situations to develop the skills, knowledge and experience required to become a competent nurse. Although sometimes initially challenging, practice learning is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of learning to be a nurse.

Structure of placements
Placements are spread over the two years:

Your initial placements are designed to introduce you to working in a professional setting and to develop essential care and basic assessment skills, infection control and learn about safeguarding vulnerable people.

You will then build on the experience gained from Year one and will begin to take on more responsibility, progressing your clinical reasoning skills and begin to look after small groups of patients making confident, proactive decisions for their health and management with less supervision.

You will also have the opportunity to choose a four week elective placement in which you can pick a speciality (e.g. working with Clinical Nurse Specialists, specialist services or independent and 3rd sector providers), or a different context of care (e.g. prison, private health care facility, social care, charity, hospice etc.), or a lived experience of a certain condition (e.g. charity work, carer shadowing, etc.) During your final year, you will require less supervision and will be responsible for a small group of patients.

Whilst in the clinical placement we ensure our nursing students receive continuous support and guidance from a dedicated mentor and practice learning teams made up of lecturers and practitioners.

Facilities

Children's skills laboratories
We have two Children's skills laboratories which are set up like nursing wards. The skills labs are used by all student nurses throughout their on-campus study time at LSBU. They learn manual handling of patients, basic life support skills and skills specific to the field of nursing.

SimMan
The nursing wards have simulator mannequins; SimMan, SimBaby and SimMom. These life-size mannequins are computer controlled and can be programmed with various clinical conditions. These are operated by a computer in real-time and so respond to a students' actions. They also allow students to see the outcome of specific interventions in certain scenarios, which could make the patient better or deteriorate quite quickly.

The mannequins are used to teach students how to recognise clinical signs, and to also associate those clinical signs with the actions they are taking to care for the patient. SimMan can be male or female with fully accurate anatomy and can breathe, blink, sweat, speak and groan in pain as well as have a pulse.

Children's nurses work in a child-centred and multi-professional team, which is reflected in the variety of people who contribute to the course. Expert speakers include service users, such as parents and charitable organisations, expert practitioners and other lead professionals in child health and children's nursing.

Career progression

All graduates are offered the opportunity to apply for employment with the NHS Trusts and hospitals where they gained experience during training when posts are available. The course has an excellent record in graduate employment, including working overseas, and covering a range of qualified nurse positions.

Successful graduates of the PgDip can top-up to an MSc in one year and will be qualified to study a range of further specialist postgraduate pathways. With additional experience, advanced practice is available at masters level with the potential to progress to doctorate studies. This is an exciting programme of study which, on successful completion, allows students to seek to have their qualification recorded by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and to practise as an Independent Nurse Prescriber (V300).

Prescribing by nurses has evolved to offer better access to medicines and to optimise the skills and expertise of nurses in the provision of care. Where appropriate, nurses are able to complete episodes of care, whilst also enhancing their role within the team.

Patients evaluate their experience of Nurse Independent prescribing positively.

Students frequently report that the course is probably the most challenging they have undertaken since their pre-registration programme, but also the most rewarding. Students report positively on the organisation of the course and on the support provided for their preparation as prescribers. The programme delivery is designed to provide opportunities for students to receive feedback to support the development of their work throughout the programme. We consider all student feedback and work with this to enhance the student experience and outcomes.

We meet regularly with Non-Medical Prescribing Leads and mentors to ensure that the programme maintains its relevance to the constantly evolving environment of healthcare, thus ensuring that students are ‘fit for practice’ and ‘fit for purpose’. The programme team includes academic staff who continue to work in practice.

Course outline

The programme is a multi-professional, part-time course which will prepare nurses, midwives, health visitors for a role as an Independent Nurse Prescriber (V300).

In accordance with the requirements identified by the NMC, the programme comprises 26 theory days, of which some may be attended more flexibly online, and 12 practice days (90 hours equivalent) in clinical practice preparing to be a prescriber.

This 40 credit programme at level 7 comprises two 10 credits modules (one at level 6) and one 20 credit module focusing on the principles which underpin prescribing practice and pharmacology.

On successful completion of the programme students will be able to:
-Recognise and manage clinical complexity, consult effectively with patients and carers, assessing their need for medicines, taking account of their wishes and conducting, as appropriate, a relevant physical examination.
-Demonstrate clarity of reasoning in relation to the relevance of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics and apply the knowledge to their own prescribing practice.
-Interrogate the benefits and demonstrate how they will prescribe safely, appropriately and cost effectively, justifying the local application of legal and professional frameworks for accountability and responsibility in relation to prescribing.
-Synthesise sources of information, advice and support, explaining how they will use them in prescribing practice, taking into account evidence based practice, national/local guidelines and the roles of others who are involved in prescribing practice.
-Critically debate factors which impact on prescribing in a public health context and which necessitate therapeutic monitoring and modification and practice based change.
-Demonstrate through the interface of theory and practice they can take an appropriate history taking, undertake a clinical assessment and make an appropriate diagnosis having considered the legal, cognitive, emotional and physical differences between children and adults.

Graduate destinations

Non-medical prescribing is offered as stand-alone provision, but can also contribute to a postgraduate award.

For example, you could combine successful completion of the Non-Medical Prescribing award with the 20-credit module HPHG7024 Medicines: Therapeutics and Pharmacology for a Postgraduate Certificate Practice Development with option to transfer the credits into a Postgraduate Diploma or MSc Practice Development.

Other admission requirements

All entry and selection criteria must be met in full prior to programme commencement:
-Evidence of prior successful study at level 6 and within 6 years of the course start date.
-A fully completed application form confirming.

We recommend that applicants have successfully completed at least one academic module at Level 7 prior to applying for this programme at Level 7.

-At least two years' clinical experience in the area in which prescribing will take place.
-Identification of the need to prescribe by the line manager, and access to a prescribing budget on successful completion of the course.
-A Designated Medical Practitioner (DMP) who will act as mentor.
-The DMP mentor must meet the standards required by the Department of Health.
-Clinical governance arrangements agreed by the Non-Medical Prescribing Lead.
-For applicants within Cumbria and Lancashire, evidence of attainment of a minimum mark of 80% in the pre-course numeracy assessment.
-A copy of a satisfactory Enhanced DBS check obtained by the applicant’s employer, and issued within three years of the course start date.

We have recently developed our innovative Masters in Person-Centred Practice (PcP) Framework with a suite of course routes which place the values of person-centredness at their core. These routes offer practitioners the opportunity to build upon their experience and develop an understanding of the knowledge and evidence that positively contributes to the health and wellbeing of persons, groups and populations. You can opt to study the route which best meets your professional background and future aspirations.

Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Registered Nurses already working in, or wishing to work in, the community can undertake a specified group of modules that allows them to achieve a community qualification or registration recognised by the NMC in District Nursing, Health Visiting or School Nursing.

There are three core modules that enable you to obtain a PgCert. You will then study modules appropriate to your desired route.

The routes in the Person-Centred Practice Framework seek to influence and enable the transformative processes of personal and professional development through engagement, facilitation and evaluation of person-centred teaching and learning approaches. It is designed to meet the professional needs of practitioners from all disciplines working in a variety of different health and social care settings.

The Framework is innovative and interactive, emphasising application of theory to your practice context. It will enable you to critically engage with, evaluate and synthesise the evidence and research to promote the development and enhancement of person centred culture and practice. This develops a pro-active, transformative and reflective approach to meeting the public health and social needs of individuals, families, groups and populations.

You can personalise your learning to your own situation eg mental health, social care, infection control, acute care and community health. International students are particularly welcome as they offer a varied and different perspective to the context in which the learning occurs.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Our teaching, learning and assessment strategy is framed by our core philosophical concepts of personhood, person-centredness, human valuing, healthful relations, human potential and development, supportive and enabling environments. Central to this strategy is the need for learners to engage in the learning experiences, a readiness to listen and explore, preparedness to be open to experiences and a resolve to keep going. This environment will generate an ethos of engagement and criticality where students can explore and challenge theories, practices and different sources of knowledge creatively in an atmosphere of high challenge and high support. We will achieve this learning environment through
a focus on three pillars of learning activity namely:

- Student-centred experiential and collaborative learning;
- Reflexivity and critical discourse;
- Sustainable and ethical evidence-based teaching.

Students will be supported to challenge their thinking, values and beliefs; through the posing of complex activities and questions, and develop resilient and sustainable approaches to their learning and practice in response to these. Critical to this process is the use of diverse knowledge, scholarly inquiry processes and evidence informed materials to engage and enliven the processes of learning.

Assessment strategies will encourage application to practice. In line with the framework’s philosophy, a wide range of sustainable strategies are used to ensure assessment diversity. This will be achieved through the use of varied strategies which draw on the student’s own areas of practice such as portfolio development, practice proposals, annotated bibliographies, simulation events, games, seminar presentations and self-determined contextual assignment topics. Tutor, peer and self-assessment, including within virtual environments (eg [email protected], Values Exchange), will be an important component of approaches to formative and summative assessment.

For students undertaking NMC recognised specialist qualification and registration (District Nursing, Health Visiting, School Nursing), the course is 50% practice-based and requires placement in an approved practice with a Practice Teacher or Sign-off Mentor or Health Visitor Mentor. Placement will be negotiated with your supporting NHS area.

Teaching hours and attendance

Your attendance requirements at QMU will depend on which module you are studying and whether you are studying full or part-time.

Links with industry/professional bodies: The routes allow you to gain the higher level knowledge and skills required for advanced practice. It does not gain accreditation with the NMC unless students are undertaking the Specialist Practitioner Qualification in District Nursing or registration as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN)

All applicants for District Nursing must be on part 1 of the NMC register (adult). All applicants for Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) need to be on either part 1 of the NMC register (adult) and/ or be a registered midwife. It is recommended that applicants have completed a period of experience of sufficient length to have consolidated pre-registration outcomes and to have gained a deeper understanding in relevant professional practice; have a degree and access to practice placement and Practice Teacher/Sign-off Mentor or Health Visitor Mentor.

Other entry requirement information

International: Where your degree has not been studied in English, you will be required to take an IELTS test receiving an overall score of 6.5 and no individual component score below 6.0.

Criminal records check: For students undertaking NMC approved qualifications a satisfactory criminal records check will be required. Compliance with the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) and mental health legislation for clinical placement and employability in statutory services, for work with children and in other sensitive areas of employment.
