Studying the MSc Nursing programme will enable graduate students to practice effectively within a professional values base in a variety of health and social care settings: emphasising compassion, communication and dignity in care. You’ll gain an advanced understanding, knowledge and the skills required in becoming a first level qualified nurse with a sound portfolio of clinical and interpersonal skills, preparing you for your preferred career pathway.

DBS CHECKS

Throughout this course you will be working with vulnerable groups of individuals including children. In order to ensure that the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing offers places on their programmes to the most suitable candidates you will all be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB). The Faculty of Health and Wellbeing will be able to guide you through this process once you have been successfully offered a conditional place at the University. It is important to note that any unsatisfactory Enhanced DBS clearance may result in the offer of your place being withdrawn even if you have already started your course.

INDUSTRY LINKS

The School of Nursing is one of the largest providers of healthcare education in the North West region and as a result we have developed close links with healthcare providers across the whole of the central Lancashire area including NHS Trusts across Preston & Fylde Coast; Fleetwood & Blackpool; Blackburn; Burnley; Chorley; Southport & Ormskirk, and many more. We can also place students with private healthcare providers, independent and voluntary sector organisations, and these learning environments provide our students with a unique insight into how healthcare is managed in all settings, not just within the NHS.

All clinical placement providers are audited according to the Nursing & Midwifery Council professional regulatory requirements for learning & teaching in clinical practice and each area has a dedicated member of academic staff attached to the placement, so that students may access support and advice. Academic staff work in close contact with the NHS Trust Practice Education Facilitators and the development of these close links with practice partners enable our students to feel confident that their practice experiences are supported throughout their course.

As part of your clinical experiences you can expect to work full-time alongside a clinical mentor who will support your learning journey throughout each placement area. All students are expected to work closely with their mentors which may entail a range of different shift patterns throughout the year.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION

Successful completion of the course will lead to professional registration as a nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Council.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The programme will be delivered within the UCLan Preston campus, with placement experiences being provided within NHS and independent clinical practice settings.

The student’s performance will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods, which will include:
-Written assignments e.g. essay, critical dialogue
-Creative assessments e.g. storyboard
-Practice-related assessments e.g. OSCEs (Observed Structured Clinical Examination), DONAs (Direct Observation of Nursing Activities), practice competencies
-Examinations
-Dissertation
-Professional portfolio (demonstrating cross-field learning experiences)

OPPORTUNITIES

This programme will include 2 x 9 – 12 week placements within health care settings in each academic year, during which the student will develop and demonstrate a series of practice competencies.

There will be an opportunity to undertake a 4-week international placement in the latter part of Year 2 of the programme.

Successful completion of the programme prepares the graduate for future employment as a registered nurse (Adult or Mental Health). The School of Nursing’s related and well-established BSc(Hons) programme has shown high levels employability for course graduates.

The 2-year MSc in Nursing (Child) is open to applicants who have already completed an honours degree and have a minimum of 750 hours’ experience in a healthcare setting in the last year.

The curriculum for the MSc in Nursing is designed to meet the needs of the changing demography in the wider population and the emerging health needs. A range of teaching and learning strategies are implemented to engage the learner including simulation, practice learning, lectures, skills rehearsals, and online digital learning resources.

Practice based learning is central to the students’ development, and Nursing (Child) students will spend 40 weeks of their course on placement. Here they will gain experience in a diverse range of nursing settings, including community, nursing homes, and hospitals.

The Nursing (Child) programme has been designed to develop the students’ personal and professional attributes, knowledge and skills required of a newly registered nurse.

The Nursing (Child) course does not follow the usual University term times. The academic year starts in early September and ends late the following August. 

50% of the teaching for Nursing students will take place in healthcare placements, and the other 50% will be taught at university.

The MSc Nursing (Child) is made up of five modules:

Year 1:

Module 1 – Introduction to Nursing

Module 2 - Living with Long-term and Chronic Conditions

This course in detail

You will focus on developing a knowledge base in children’s nursing, which is evidence-based and strongly underpinned by research.

During Year 1 you will undertake modules at Level 6 (honours level), and in the subsequent two years your modules will be at Level 7 (masters degree level). You may be able to complete the degree in less that three years if you offer evidence of relevant prior learning (AP(E)L). This may have been achieved through relevant degree level study and/or experience. If you wish to study part-time, you can complete the degree over a maximum duration of five years.

You will develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of children’s nursing. This will be informed by scholarship and research as well as critical awareness of current issues/development in the field. You will acquire specific skills, knowledge and competence in relation to children’s nursing. Your learning will be enquiry focused, helping you to develop as a reflective, innovative, confident and self-aware practitioner.

You will complete a master’s-level research project involving primary data collection; a critical review of the literature; or other scholarly output.

Teaching and learning

Oxford Brookes teaches a very wide range of pre-qualification and foundation courses including health and social care, nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, osteopathy, operating department practice, paramedic emergency care, and social work. You will share your learning with these other health care students. This is a key component of the course as it is essential to developing your teamwork skills and your understanding of the other roles you will encounter in practice.

We offer a very friendly and supportive environment in which to learn; we consistently receive very high satisfaction ratings for our student support and learning resources in student surveys. We have excellent teaching facilities, dedicated clinical skills suites and simulation resources, which include a very well equipped movement laboratory, a family of computerised simulation manikins (including a simman©, simbaby© and birthing mother©), and an extensive range of anatomy models.

Placement Opportunities

In order to provide excellent clinical learning experiences for our students, we work in partnership with the NHS and with the independent health and social care sector across Essex to provide placement opportunities.

Whilst on placement you will have a mentor allocated to you, and contact with a member of the academic team linked to that placement. You will work with experienced nurses in a diverse range of clinical settings (primary and secondary care, public and private sectors, adult and the elderly, acute care and specialist services).

This Masters degree provides the exciting opportunity for graduates to enter the nursing profession. You will gain a comprehensive education in nursing and develop into a confident, autonomous, compassionate and research-aware practitioner, specialising in children’s nursing. What will I study?

Year 1 provides the opportunity to achieve national generic and field specific competency outcomes. These include professional values, communication and interpersonal skills, nursing practice, decision making, leadership, management and team working. The programme will immerse you in health promotion, prevention strategies and best practice for service users and their families. A comprehensive introduction will also be provided to the research process.

Year 2 continues the development of field-specific competencies, with a particular focus on caring for children with complex, critical or life limiting conditions. In addition to this, you will develop the leadership and management skills required for the transition to professional practice.

This programme adheres closely to the NHS’ six core values. These values, enshrined within the NHS Constitution, have been developed by patients, the public and staff to inspire passion in the NHS, guide it in the 21st century, and provide common ground for cooperation in achieving shared aspirations. How will I study?

You will be taught using a combination of seminars, lectures, tutorials, work-based learning and technology enhanced learning. The theory part of the programme is delivered during the normal working week (Monday to Friday).

You will spend 50% of your time in practice which will be undertaken in hospitals and community settings within the NHS, local authority, independent and voluntary organisations. You will be supported by a practice placement mentor/supervisor and a practice education facilitator.

Placements include weekend, early morning, evening and night work to ensure access to a full range of practice experiences across 24 hour care. There may also be the opportunity to undertake a practice learning experience outside the region, either within the United Kingdom or internationally.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment in both theory and practice is continuous, assessed against national outcomes and generic and field competencies, with students required to demonstrate evidence of their achievement. A range of assessment of theory procedures is in place including assignments, seminar presentations, advanced notice examinations, online learning activities, case studies and portfolio work.

Who will be teaching me?

All lectures are delivered by professionals within the field of nursing as well as specialists in other areas. The pathway team represent a range of qualified, research-active professionals with extensive experience of working within the health and/or social care sector. Most importantly service users, carers and their families will be involved in facilitating learning so that an understanding is gained about the impact care has on individual groups.

What are my career prospects?

Develop the skills to work as a partner in the care of people across society in the formidable and rewarding field of mental health nursing. On this course you will hone your ability to make complex decisions, learn how to evaluate practice, co-ordinate care and advocate for patients' needs. Introducing your course

During this two year diploma you will develop the expertise needed to care for patients in increasingly complex situations in hospital and in the community and you'll learn about a spectrum of mental health issues including stress, depression and anxiety.

A rigorous combination of theoretical work in the classroom and practical experience in clinical and community settings, successful completion of the course gives you the credentials to be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a qualified nurse. The diploma represents two-thirds of a masters degree. The outstanding third may be taken in the future through a top-up course.

Overview

The PGDip comprises theory and practice to ensure appropriate preparation and assessment in both areas. You will gain a wealth of practical experience during your practice placement, helping you to assimilate the role of a nursing professional. Theoretical modules are designed to cover the many subjects needed for nursing, including: health sciences, psychology, sociology, leadership and politics, as well as the fiscal aspects of nursing.

The main emphasis is on developing higher level skills of critical thinking, reasoning and analysis. You will also develop enhanced leadership skills equipping you to supervise, delegate and challenge practice in the future. Cooperative learning is central to the success and support of the programme. You will be an active part of a field-specific ‘action learning group’ where interactions construct new knowledge, place it within a conceptual framework of existing knowledge, and then refine and assess what you know and do not know.

Conference days are an integral part of the programme and is a forum where our distinguished professors share their cutting edge research. It provides opportunities for students to learn, build networks and be part of a conference environment.

Career Opportunities

Modern nursing is a demanding vocation that could lead you into employment in a variety of settings in both hospitals and the wider community. As a graduate your degree qualification and practical experience will give you the ideal platform to develop your career in the direction that interests you most. Furthermore, as your knowledge and expertise increase you could move into a more senior position. For example, you could become a consultant nurse, leading a team and/or working in advanced clinical practice.

You could also opt to work in education, where you will train and inspire future generations of nurses. Fast track opportunities to enrol on doctoral programmes will exist if you prove to be a high-flying student. In addition, you may have the option to combine practice and research, or research and education. These are known in the profession as clinical academic careers.
