Course details

You will study the principles and practice of advanced airway assessment and management, advanced breathing assessment and management, advanced circulation assessment and management, and advanced neurological assessment and management. Gain an intimate understanding of brain anatomy and physiology in relation to brain injury, advance your knowledge of pain management, and learn the principles and practices of delivering critical care to specialist patient groups.

To gain a postgraduate certificate, you’ll need to earn 60 credits - you’ll study three modules worth 20 credits each. To gain a postgraduate diploma, you’ll need to earn 120 credits. To be awarded the full masters degree, you’ll need to earn a total of 180 credits. You’ll study the same core modules as the postgraduate diploma, with the extra 60 credits coming from your research dissertation.

Resuscitation is a rapidly evolving area of medicine that crosses the boundaries of emergency medicine, intensive care medicine, anaesthesia and acute medicine. We are offering an MSc, Diploma and Taster MOOC to provide an opportunity for you to develop your skills in this area under the guidance of an international faculty. The level of study and knowledge will go beyond most specialist exit exams marking you as a potential leader in this field. The MSc and Diploma
The MSc is a 3-year 180 credit MSc, including a 60 credit 10000+/- 500 word dissertation in year 3. It offers two years of structured web based teaching via an online learning platform. For students who wish not to complete a dissertation in year 3, a 2-year Diploma is offered based on the lectures, tutorials and course work.

This course commences September 2017
The course is online, allowing you to study at your own pace and in your own time, enabling you to continue with your work commitments. It provides an excellent structured learning platform for trainees and specialists to develop skills in this area. Lectures are delivered by leading experts in the field with the same lecturer/course leads offering weekly tutorials.

In the first two years the course offers 8 modules covering different areas of critical care. Each of the eight modules runs over 10 weeks, In year 3 the 60-credit dissertation is completed by students completing the MSc.

The MSc in Critical Care is a part-time, distance learning course, which aims to provide the opportunity to explore critical care as a multidimensional phenomenon through the module assignments and through taught components.

Critical care is the specialised and comprehensive care of patients whose conditions are life threatening, from pre-hospital assessment through to discharge from critical and acute care environments. The course explores the management of critically ill patients, and the final dissertation requires you to examine in-depth issues related to current practice of the critically ill patient.  The course also aims to inform those who teach within the critical care setting at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels to further their knowledge and teach others more effectively.

The full MSc course takes two years to complete, although you can choose to exit with a Postgraduate Certificate after nine months or a Postgraduate Diploma after 18 months, if you have fulfilled all the criteria for those awards.

The taught component introduces you to the multifaceted nature of caring for a critically ill patient. The modular approach allows you to evaluate care of the acute or critically ill patient from an evidence-based perspective, at any point on the patient’s journey (pre-hospital to discharge), allowing consideration from a multi-professional approach. Professional issues, including interprofessional practice, law, ethics, quality and safety are covered, as well as the psychosocial aspects relevant to caring for critically ill patients. The assessments are structured to allow students to evaluate the topic in relation to their practice and professional base.

Approximately 50 places are offered per intake and the majority of students are self-funded; although some obtain awards from charities and trusts.

Structure

The MSc consists of three stages – stage T1 (first taught stage), stage T2 (second taught stage) and stage R (research dissertation stage):

• Stage T1 (first taught stage)

This stage lasts for nine months, and consists of three 20-credit modules totalling 60 credits, at Level 7.

• Stage T2 (second taught stage)

This stage lasts for a further nine months, and consists of a further three 20-credit modules totalling 60 credits, at Level 7, to achieve a total  of  120 credits to complete the taught stages.

• Stage R (MSc research dissertation stage)

The dissertation stage of the programme lasts for a further six months, to a total for the MSc of two years, and will include a dissertation of 60 credits at Level 7, to achieve a combined total of 180 credits at Level 7 to complete the MSc course.

You may leave the course after successfully completing stage T1 with a postgraduate certificate, or after successfully completing stage T2 with a postgraduate diploma.

This programme aims to provide you with further knowledge of the scientific concepts and procedures underpinning sport and exercise related musculoskeletal function, measurement, injury and treatment.

The programme will allow you to adopt a multidisciplinary approach to the scientific study of sport and exercise related musculoskeletal health and performance including anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, bioengineering, and kinesiology. You will have the opportunity to carry out in-depth and critical research in selected areas of interest.

Core study areas include orthopaedic biomechanics, neuromuscular function, physiology of exercise and sport, immediate and pre-hospital care of the injured athlete, research methods for sport and exercise, basic science and regenerative therapy, emerging technologies for health and wellbeing, motion analysis of human movement, developing computer models for sports biomechanics, sports injury, and a research project.

The purpose of this module is to develop the academic and clinical requirements for the nurse or other allied health professional working in either an Emergency Department, Minor Injury Unit or other pre-hospital environment. The pathway will enable students to develop graduate, lifelong learning skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and the use of evidence based practice to enhance current professional and academic skills; this in turn will develop transferable skills which will enhance their employability.

The pathway has been designed and based on the Royal College of Emergency Care competency document.

During this course students will develop a deep understanding of the diversity of health and physical and mental well-being. They will develop an understanding of a wide range of issues such as those of particular relevance to a rural environment and the application and effectiveness of new technologies in a healthcare environment. - Applied Physiology of Acute and Critical Illness
This module looks at critically analysing the impact of pathophysiology on acute and critically ill adult patients and to understand altered physiology. You will explore the consequences of acute and critical illness on homeostasis using a wide knowledge base of normal and altered physiology to understand key treatments. The module will also focus on cardio-respiratory physiology, neurological control and acute medical conditions.

- Care and Management of the Acute and Critically Ill
You will critically evaluate the complexity of care issues in relation to acutely and critically ill adult patients and analyse the context of that care. The effectiveness of care implementation across a range of patient presentations will be analysed with consideration given to the processes of assessment, monitoring and intervention.

- Legal and Professional Issues in Caring for the Acute and Critically Ill
In this module you will undertake a critical evaluation of service delivery systems from legal and professional perspectives. This includes the right to health care; upholding human rights; duty and standards of care; professional negligence and the application of these to professional practice in acute and critical care contexts. Topics such as life and death, euthanasia, legal definitions of death, organ and tissue donation are also considered in terms of the implications on practitioners caring for acute and critically ill patients.

Learning and teaching methods

You will study through a mixture of lectures,group work, patient scenarios, interactive tutorials and seminar presentations. You will need to attend University one day a week, currently our students are taught on Fridays at 9am-5pm.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

You will develop personally and professionally within your specialist clinical area. The course will also enable you to develop a high level of skill in transferring complex theoretical knowledge into comprehensive, patient-centred and focused clinical practice.

Assessment methods

Modules are assessed through multiple-choice questions, viva voce (oral examination), assignments, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) and written evidence of personal and professional development. The OSCEs will take place in May each year and be completed as part of the clinical skills modules and involve undertaking a comprehensive patient history, examining a particular bodily system, and identifying a management and treatment plan for the individual.

Delivered in partnership with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the world’s largest aeromedical provider, the Graduate Certificate in Retrieval Medicine focuses on current and future retrieval systems and evidence based approaches within both an Australian and international context.

The program is structured to accommodate the busy health professional. Delivered in part-time mode, it combines intensive practical residential components with online delivery that enables networking opportunities.

The residential components are held as a compulsory 3 to 4 day intensive per semester. They will include case-based discussions and hands-on immersive learning sessions where technical and physical aspects of retrieval medicine will be covered. Topics will range from helicopter (rotary wing), fixed wing, ground and common retrieval equipment familiarisation through to pre-hospital critical care skills sessions. You will engage in ‘real world’ scenarios and simulation demonstrating retrieval medicine in action. Intense, small group interactive case-based discussions also play a role in the residential component and online learning throughout the semester.

The Graduate Certificate in Retrieval Medicine enables you to matriculate into the Graduate Diploma in Retrieval Medicine and the Masters of Retrieval Medicine.

You will critically examine the challenges of providing safe and effective healthcare in a range of challenging environments. You will focus on both the evaluation of health issues to be expected in the field and the planning and preparation phase for any remote or wilderness activity. Key to the programme is that you learn to recognise and evaluate the unique ethical, professional and legal challenges of delivering medical care in challenging environments. The programme will develop in you, the skills necessary to evaluate research literature, and manage the challenge of implementing health interventions where evidence may be weak or conflicting.

A key part of the programme are the short residential courses designed to provide the challenge of learning in an unfamiliar environment and relying on the collaboration and support of the other participants.

Expert tutors will facilitate group discussions and project work and provide support for independent learning. Assessments are designed to provide opportunities for personal reflection, critical appraisal, evaluation and analysis to demonstrate the knowledge and skills gained throughout the programme.

Due to the nature of postgraduate research programmes, the vast majority of your time will be spent in independent study and research, supported by additional research training opportunities. Course content

This Masters is available as both a full time course and as a two year part time course.

During your studies you’ll focus on the following modules:

Learning and teaching

Attendance is compulsory and will be approximately one and a half days a month (you will not be expected to be in every week). Recorded lectures of shared modules with other courses will be available to be viewed online, along with specified eLearning material.

Seminars will be recorded, where appropriate. Some practical sessions, group tutorials and specific teaching sessions will be compulsory.

Placements at appropriate professional clubs and NHS clinics will be organised, with some flexibility to negotiate clinic dates and times, and contacts will be provided for self-organised additional experience opportunities. Predominantly we use a case based approach; the eLearning each week will have a relevant case or scenario identified, and required reading and practical tasks set.

Assessment

There will be a variety of assessments, appropriate for vocational character of the course and the nature of the subjects studied. These will include
