Course overview

Are you planning to take a pre-registration training year before taking the General Pharmaceutical Council’s registration exam? This 10-session course will support you with specialist training and provide opportunities to network with fellow pre-registration pharmacists.

We fully understand the pressures of the pre-registration year and this course will help you develop your full potential by focusing on key elements of the pre-registration syllabus. We will support your professional development through monthly sessions on topics such as pharmacy law, communication skills, calculation practice, business management and emergency first aid.

We will also prepare you for your registration assessment with the General Pharmaceutical Council. Our Programme Leader has a long history as a pre-registration tutor and our academic staff have backgrounds in both hospital and community pharmacy. Our teaching is supplemented by external speakers who focus on up-to-date clinical issues.

The contact time for this course is one day per month at the University of Sunderland, for a total of 10 sessions. The course does not earn you credits, but it will help prepare you for the exam that will result in your registration as a pharmacist.

You will study the principles and practice of advanced airway assessment and management, advanced breathing assessment and management, advanced circulation assessment and management, and advanced neurological assessment and management. Gain an intimate understanding of brain anatomy and physiology in relation to brain injury, advance your knowledge of pain management, and learn the principles and practices of delivering critical care to specialist patient groups.

To gain a postgraduate certificate, you’ll need to earn 60 credits - you’ll study three modules worth 20 credits each. To gain a postgraduate diploma, you’ll need to earn 120 credits. To be awarded the full masters degree, you’ll need to earn a total of 180 credits. You’ll study the same core modules as the postgraduate diploma, with the extra 60 credits coming from your research dissertation.

Teaching and learning

MSc in Occupational Therapy is taught alongside the well-established and highly-regarded BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy.

Pre-registration Masters students will be taught alongside the undergraduate students in all occupational therapy specific modules. These will be identified with different module numbers and names to those of the undergraduate programme. This dual level teaching in classroom will provide you with the opportunity to learn the core skills and specific attributes of occupational therapy alongside the BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy students.

However, the pre-registration Masters students are provided with an enhanced level 7 learning experience with module specific tutorials to explore a more critical and evidence based approach to the subject matter and thus develop professional competence in academic, research and digital literacy, critical thinking and personal self-awareness.

Our approach will require you to actively engage in these Masters level tutorials and become self-directed, innovative, creative and critical learners. MSc Development Economics

The MSc in Development Economics is one of the Department's newer taught MSc programmes and it reflects the Department's growing strength in both theoretical and applied policy areas, particularly as they relate to developing countries.

Pre-Masters

One third of your pre-Masters year will be spent developing your English skills and academic skills; allowing you to approach academic reading and writing with confidence. You will also develop analytical and mathematical skills in your Economics modules.

Module assignments, and in particular the dissertation, provide an initial training in the kind of skills needed for the independent investigations which are likely to be important in professional careers.

On successful completion of the pre-Masters year you will progress to an MSc Economics programme in the Department of Economics. 

MSc Economics

This programme provides an advanced training in economic theory and econometrics, and application of these to achieve a sophisticated understanding of policy issues. 

Pre-Masters

One third of your pre-Masters year will be spent developing your English skills and academic skills; allowing you to approach academic reading and writing with confidence. You will also develop analytical and mathematical skills in your Economics modules. 

Aimed at highly motivated international learners with an excellent academic record, the pre-Masters year is designed to bridge the gap between your current qualification and the postgraduate programme at Birmingham. You will develop both subject specific knowledge in the area of Economics and your academic English. 

Other general MSc programmes, or more specialised and policy-oriented programmes, are available in the area of Economics, Banking or Finance.

The Department of Economics boasts a large group of academics highly active in the field of Environmental Economics. You will be taught by senior members of staff, who regularly publish in the leading journals in their fields, such as the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Environmental and Resource Economics, and Ecological Economics. We also value excellence in teaching, all our lecturers have received outstanding teaching evaluations, and one of them is a co-author of the best-selling environmental economics textbook in Europe.

The Department of Economics also has numerous PhD students, many working on environment related projects, some of which graduated from our MSc course. We foster a collegial and intellectually stimulating environment by regularly hosting a range of visiting speakers, running a specialized seminar series, and organising postgraduate workshops inviting students from other leading universities.

Employability

This programme provides rigorous training in environmental and resource economics. This will prove valuable to employers in local and national government, government agencies, environmental organisations, business and academia. 

In recent years, our students have gone on to take up positions in;

Length of Course
The course runs throughout the year, and students may join the course at any time. Details of term dates and entry requirements are shown on the application form. There are approximately 22 hours of tuition per week (including commercial visits).

Maximum Class Size
The maximum class size for English Language is 15 students.

Certificate of Successful Attendance
A University of Sheffield certificate of successful attendance will be presented to students who complete their course.
