About the programme

Within the next decade, there will be new challenges and opportunities for midwives to develop their roles as practitioners, partners and leaders in delivering and shaping future maternity services (Midwifery 2020, 2010). This programme will give you the education and skills to embrace this challenge.

Additional Entry Information

Entry is also dependent on the following successful screening: health screening; Protection of Vulnerable Groups; and personal interview.

Preference is given to those with qualifications at first examination sitting.

Applicants may also be considered with other academic, vocational or professional qualifications deemed to be equivalent.

Further desirable skills pre-application: communication/interpersonal skills; ability to work as part of a team; IT literate; research literate; driving license; previous work experience in a caring/health environment.

Practical experience

The programme comprises 50% practice and 50% theory. Practice placements are available throughout NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde; NHS Ayrshire and Arran; NHS Lanarkshire; NHS Highland and NHS Dumfries and Galloway. There is at least one placement outwith the acute maternity sector.

Your learning

Year 1:
Focuses on normality in the childbirth process, receiving specialist education in relation to life and social sciences, adaptation to pregnancy, and basic caring practical midwifery skills. You are introduced to midwifery practice during the pre-conceptual, prenatal, intranatal and postnatal periods; key public health issues; and professional, ethical and legal issues.

Year 2:
Focuses on the assessment, management, support and care for women with complex medical, obstetric and/or social ill-health and/ or needs during pregnancy, labour and/ or the postnatal period. Issues are examined around women’s emotional and mental health including eating disorders, suicide, and reaction to bereavement.

Year 3:
Further enhances your knowledge and understanding to advanced scholarship level within leadership and management frameworks. This enables you to challenge existing practice, develop new ideas, and work creatively and innovatively to advance practice. You will also undertake a dissertation project.

Professional recognition

The course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Graduates are eligible for registration as a registered midwife with the NMC.

State-of-the-art facilities

Our campuses are equipped with artificial simulated environments with contemporary healthcare technology, where you’ll learn in a realistic context, to put your knowledge into practice. The unpredictability of patient symptoms are mimicked using sophisticated software in a clinical ward setting, ranging from low to high dependency beds.

Investment in the Domus Initiative – an older adult artificial home environment – provides you with experience in caring for older people and dementia care. In a first for the Scottish university sector, we have established A Community Orientated Resource for Nursing (ACORN) where students can practice within a simulated primary care environment.

Lanarkshire and Paisley campuses also provide midwifery students with excellent learning and teaching environments with facilities and equipment that includes a birthing room with maternal simulator and a birthing pool for simulated water births.

Life-changing research

We work jointly with a range of partners, both nationally and internationally, on our research interests, and this directly informs teaching at UWS – which means that you’ll learn from the experts.

The Postgraduate Midwifery Diploma prepares qualified adult nurses to pursue a rewarding and challenging career in midwifery.

Who is it for?

This course has been specifically designed for experienced adult nurses who are looking to change their career direction and become a midwife.

The course provides a fast track route into midwifery and is completed within an 90 week teaching period.

Objectives

As a midwife you will be working with families and parents at one of the most important times of their lives. You will be caring for and supporting women and their partners during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.

The Postgraduate Midwifery Diploma (90 week shortened course for Nurses) prepares qualified adult nurses to pursue a rewarding and challenging career in midwifery.

The programme will enable you to develop your skills, professional knowledge and understanding of the midwife's role, understand childbirth and the current issues in midwifery practice. It will provide knowledge and skills on the promotion of health and well-being of childbearing women and their families. Experience will be gained in all areas of maternity services including community clinics, birthing centres, the antenatal clinic, delivery suite, antenatal/postnatal wards and women's homes. You'll also understand the value and importance of working within a multi-professional team to ensure the best possible outcome for women and babies when complexities arise.

Placements

Approximately 60% of your time on the course will be spent on placement.

Students will be allocated to a community of practice for their clinical learning experiences. City, University of London currently has four communities of practice in Newham, City and Hackney (Homerton), Camden and Islington (UCLH) and Tower Hamlets (Royal London).

Teaching and learning

Teaching and learning involves lecture sessions, workshops, small group activities and discussions and whole class discussion.

You will split your time between clinical practice and the institution, with 60% of your time gaining clinical practice experience and 40% of your time being theory based. Some of the student-directed study time is used for reflective practice sessions held within the practice setting.

Modules are assessed through a combination of group work, written coursework, written and clinical examination. All assessments are focused on issues in midwifery practice.

Academic facilities

Our specialist Clinical Skills Centre at our Northampton Square Campus has been designed to give students a safe environment in which to practise their clinical and caring skills. Designed to reflect working wards and clinical environments, you will be able to familiarise yourself with equipment and practices before commencing placements.

We have a range of specialist equipment that is used to simulate birthing situations from normal to emergency, to enable you to develop the skills you need no-matter the birthing situation you are supporting.

You will have access to a simulated 6-bedded high dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment; laboratories, including a biology laboratory, allow students to rehearse their skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and women’s homes.

Modules

The course is delivered through a mixture of clinical practice and academic study. You will experience a wealth of opportunities for learning with midwives, women and their families within the hospital and community settings. From the outset of your journey you will be able to apply your growing knowledge and skills holistically through the undertaking of a small caseload of women. This will be with the support of your mentors and supervisors of midwives. A portfolio of practice will help to steer your learning and integrate the theoretical strands into your practice.

The course commences with an orientation module followed by modules related to the following themes:
-Applied Biological Sciences
-Fundamental Aspects of Care
-Professional Midwifery Knowledge
-Psychosocial Sciences and Public Health

Students will be able to combine theoretical study and develop clinical skills within our excellent clinical simulation facilities. The course has a theory/practice split of 40%-60%. Students will be allocated to a clinical area and supported by a trained midwifery mentor and practice education facilitator. Independent study time is also given so students can develop their individual learning.

Career prospects

Midwifery is a challenging career which allows you to develop your skills and interests within a range of specialisms within the profession. Successful graduates gain registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), which provides an internationally recognised professional qualification allowing you to practice in the UK and overseas. Some countries require additional local registration.

Careers prospects are excellent; 90% of our graduates go on to employment or further study within 6 months of graduation. Our graduates secure employment with trusts including Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

As a graduate midwife in London you should expect to start your career with an annual average salary of £29,000. Progression within the midwifery profession is common, with many graduates advancing to a Band 6 role within 6-12 months of graduating (qualified midwives start on a Band 5 contract) and continuing to steadily progress throughout their career.

Graduates from the PG Dip Midwifery (90 week) course are also able to top-up their qualification to an MSc by taking addition modules and completing a dissertation.

A range of career opportunities are available for midwives in midwifery led stand-alone birth centres, acute units, and independent practice, consultant and specialist roles. Midwives can also work independently and self-employed as independent midwives.

Professional accreditation

This course in detail

The following midwifery courses are offered:
- a three-year midwifery programme for those with a first class honours degree plus Biology or Human Biology A level at grade B or above. Previous health care experience is desirable, but not essential.

- a 21-month post-experience master’s degree for experienced adult nurses registered with the NMC who have a first class honours degree.

The practice and educational content of the course is the same as the BSc course; however, assessment will be at master's level. This will enhance development of critical thinking skills which will prepare students for further postgraduate studies. In addition, Midwifery MSc students will have the opportunity to undertake primary research for their dissertation.

During Year 1, you will undertake level 6 modules. In years 2 and 3 you will study level 7 modules.

Teaching and learning

We offer a friendly and stimulating learning environment; we consistently receive high satisfaction ratings for our student support and learning resources in student surveys. We have excellent teaching facilities, dedicated clinical skills suites and simulation resources, which include a well equipped movement laboratory, a family of computerised simulation manikins (including a simman, simbaby and birthing mother), an extensive range of anatomy models and fully networked computer rooms.

At Oxford Brookes, no professional group works in isolation. We teach a wide range of pre-qualification and foundation courses including health and social care, all branches of nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, osteopathy, operating department practice, paramedic emergency care, and social work. You will share your learning with these other health care students. This is a key component of the course as it is essential to developing your teamwork skills and your understanding of the other roles you will encounter in practice.

Midwifery is an exciting and diverse career choice. Research highlights

We have a number of both promising and experienced researchers working in established areas including maternal and women's public health, cancer care, children and families, drugs and alcohol, physical rehabilitation and enablement, and interprofessional education and collaborative practice. Over the past few years, these researchers have won external research and consultancy contracts including grants, fellowships and studentships for NHS staff. Our research staff collaborate with researchers from across Oxford Brookes University and from the Institute of Health Sciences at the University of Oxford, along with research teams from many other UK and international centres.

Our academic staff have extensive experience of NHS, clinical practice and general management at senior level. They also have a significant record of research and publications on a range of topics, including water birth and breast feeding. The currency of the course is also assured by the lecturers' close involvement in the maternity services and their movement between that sector and education.

These modules are suitable for you if are a registered mental health nurse, midwife, health visitor or social worker. In the maternal mental health recovery module you develop the skills to recognise maternal mental health illnesses in pregnancy and during the first year of the postnatal period, and you learn to formulate individualised pathways of care and manage potential risks and complications in order to promote positive birth outcomes.

You explore mental health conditions and their management including personality disorders, eating disorders, tokophobia, self-harming, schizophrenia, puerperal psychosis, fabricated illness, substance misuse, antenatal and post-natal depression, drawing from the evidence base to inform your practice.

It will benefit to you if you work with and support women in pregnancy or in the first year after birth who have mental health concerns.
The perinatal mental health and the family module helps you to develop the skills to recognise the impact (short and long term) of maternal mental health on the development of the infant/child, formulate individualised pathways of care and manage potential risks and complications in order to promote positive birth outcomes. By engaging with this module you develop a deeper understanding on family relationships and dynamics.

The perinatal mental health and the family module benefits to you if work with and support women in pregnancy or in the first year after birth who have mental health concerns.
