The overall purpose of our programmes is to produce professionally capable, analytical and critical reflective social work practitioners, capable of working in any social work service or setting. Features and benefits of the course

Our MA in Social Work is specifically designed for postgraduates who wish to become registered professional social work practitioners and successful completion of our programme confers eligibility to apply for professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

The MA programme is aligned against the Professional Capabilities Framework for Social Workers and the Knowledge and Skills Statements for social work with children and families and adults (where appropriate). It offers an exciting opportunity to undertake a professional training programme whilst studying for a Master's degree.

Placement options

The programme incorporates two social work practice learning placements. The first placement is of 70 days duration and the second and final placement is of 100 days. The university has an excellent relationship with a range of statutory, non-statutory, voluntary and private agencies providing social work services and social work placements. Students are fully supported throughout their placements by a specialist placement team and network of experienced practice based social work educators.

All our programmes take a student-centred approach to teaching and learning. This Certificate in Nursing (Nurse/Midwife Prescribing) aims to equip nurses and midwives with the requisite knowledge, skills and competence to prescribe medicinal products safely and effectively. Upon successful completion of this course, the graduate will be eligible to apply to An Bord Altranais (ABA) for registration as a Registered Nurse Prescriber.

The course is composed of three modules:
Developing the Professional Role,
Prescribing Medicinal Products
Physical Assessment.

Each module has 10 ECTS credits and each requires students to carry out clinical practicum, attend Trinity-based theory lectures and follow the course material by the e-learning method. Students are required to attend the university for approximately 10 days over the course of the year. In addition there is requirement for 12 days clinical exposure. To be awarded a Certificate, a student must successfully complete all three modules to the value of 30 ECTS. The course will be assessed using a variety of assessment methods, including examination, written assignment, Observed Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and a clinical portfolio which includes the completion of three independent Objective Structured long Examination Records and a case presentation.

Admission Requirements

Each applicant must meet all three types of criteria namely professional, academic and clinical as follows:

Professional:
Have an active registration with ABA: applicants must be registered in the General, Psychiatric, Children’s, Intellectual Disability, Midwifery or Public Health Nurse divisions of the active register maintained by An Bord Altranais; and
Have a minimum of three years post registration clinical experience during the last 5 years with at least one year full time experience in the specific area of practice.

Academic:
Possess competencies recognised at Level 8 of the National Framework of Qualifications (for example a higher diploma or an honours degree); and
Demonstrate evidence of further post registration education (for example completion of An Bord Altranais category I or II courses or other postgraduate courses)

Clinical Practice Experience:
Be employed in a clinical area that is approved by the course team and satisfy An Bord Altranais Requirements and Standards.
Submit a written commitment from their host organisation supporting the applicant for the clinical practicum. A Site Declaration Form signed by the Director of Nursing/Midwifery/Public Health Nursing (or relevant nurse/midwife manager) must be submitted with the entry application.
Submit a written confirmation from a medical practitioner who has agreed to act as a mentor for the required term of supervised practice (this mentor should also sign the Site Declaration Form).
Have access to computer facilities including email and internet, and be familiar with information technology in particular email and internet use.

Every module assignment can be focused on a topic you or your manager wants to investigate. The assignments are practically useful – write an evidence-based protocol or care pathway for your clients, plan how to improve the effectiveness of your service, evaluate and debate research in order to decide if the evidence is worth incorporating into practice, reflect on how central occupational engagement is for enhancing the health of your clients, or take a topic of interest to you.

The course does not further clinical skills, nor does it lead to registration from the UK professional governing bodies, but rather focuses on developing the occupational therapist’s ability to evaluate and enhance professional practice. Up to 60 credits of academic taught module exemptions can be offered for students holding a postgraduate certificate in Occupational Therapy, relevant postgraduate modules from other universities, or substantial relevant post professional periods of study – for example, AMPS or Sensory Integration.

The course maps to the national framework for teaching qualifications in Post-16 and Further Education, the new Diploma in Education and Training for Disabled Learners (DET, previously DTLLS). Teaching, learning and assessment

The teaching and assessment strategies will enable you to develop your full potential by recognising and building on prior knowledge and experience and by facilitating development of subject-related and transferable skills. There are various forms of assessment including case study analysis, portfolio of evidence of practice, essays, written examination and a project containing evidence of research methods and analysis will be used to monitor your progress. Occupational Therapy (OT) at Brunel is one of the largest, longest established, and most highly regarded programmes in the world. In fact, we are the original ‘London School of Occupational Therapy.’

The MSc Occupational Therapy (Pre-Registration) provides a Master's level route for graduates to become competent occupational therapists equipped for life-long, safe and effective practice within the global marketplace. This course is for those who are not already qualified as occupational therapists. It is a professional full-time programme, which will prepare you to become a competent occupational therapist in a variety of health and social care settings. It also allows students to be eligible to apply for:

Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Membership of the British Association of Occupational Therapists/College of Occupational Therapists.

In December 2016 our programme was granted “Preaccreditation Status” by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE), which confirms that Brunel has successfully completed steps one and two in the three-step accreditation process – see more at AOTA OT Master's-Level Programs - Developing and visit our Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) information page.

The programme will now proceed with step three – the on-site evaluation, scheduled for April 2017, followed by an accreditation decision by mid-2017.

Course Content

Programme Structure

The MSc (pre-registration or pre-reg) occupational therapy programme benefits from being integrated with other programmes within the College of Health and Life Sciences. In their first year of study, MSc (pre-registration) occupational therapy students undertake components from a number of the current BSc modules/study blocks, as well as shared teaching with post-graduate students from the divisions of occupational therapy, physiotherapy, social work and community health and nursing studies. In their second year of study, students share modules with other post-graduate students within the division of occupational therapy. Where learning is shared with the undergraduates, the content has been integrated into master's level modules and is assessed at master's level.

The programme comprises two years full time study. Taught modules are within a three-term structure. To provide a balance between academic and practice placements and still meet the minimum of 1,000 hours of practice placements required by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists and the College of Occupational Therapists, three of the practice placement modules extend beyond the term boundaries over the summer.

Academic modules are based at Brunel University in Uxbridge and practice placement modules are provided in a range of health and social care setting and increasingly in voluntary and private organisations including non-traditional settings.

Year One: The Skilled Practitioner – the How, What and Why of Occupational Therapy
Year 1 of the programme introduces students to the "how, what and why" of occupational therapy and aims to give them the opportunity to develop, explore and critique the core occupational concepts and skills of the profession in depth. The arrangement of study blocks and the two practice placement modules (that occur prior to the commencement of academic study in year 2), allow for a reciprocal exchange of academic knowledge and professional skills that develop the student’s understanding and knowledge of the profession further. Applying and evaluating research in practice is essential for occupational therapists, who are required to adopt evidence-based practice. Therefore the students are made aware from the onset of the programme of how research impacts on practice through clinical reasoning and decision-making skills gained in study blocks and also an inter-professional module HH5609: Approaches to Research.

Year Two: Mastery of Occupational Therapy – Advancing Practice
Year 2 of the programme aims to provide students with a more advanced exploration of the occupational therapy profession. Students acquire mastery in critical knowledge and evaluation of key issues on professional practice as well as critical analysis, synthesis and evaluation of theoretical concepts central to occupational therapy. In addition, students study one optional module that enables an in-depth consideration of a specialist area of current practice. Students’ research skills are further enhanced in the second year and culminate in the students producing a research thesis, in the form of a detailed research dissertation. There are two practice placements in Year 2, one at the beginning of the year and one at the end.

Immunisation requirements for the course

Please be aware that the University does not pay for any of the vaccinations or blood tests required to undertake this course, this is the responsibility of each applicant. The University does not offer a service to provide these and therefore we recommend you go to your GP or local travel clinic and start as early as possible. Until the University has evidence that you have these immunisations we will not be able to allow you to enter the clinical environment on practice placement so it is vital that you meet these requirements, ideally before you commence study. You must obtain immunisation against the following and further information can be found on the NHS website.

Please be aware that as occupational therapy students you will be working in hospitals and therefore in contact with patients who have infections so these immunisations are required for students as outlined in the Green Book by the Department of Health.

Hepatitis B x 3 vaccinations over a 6 month period and a blood test is then taken 6-8 weeks after the third dose, to check that the vaccinations have worked. Please note that the Hep B vaccination programme from the initial first vaccination to blood test upon completion, takes 8 months.
Also required is Polio & Tetanusè Rubella, Measles or MMR x 2 è BCG è Varicella Zoster, and evidence of chicken pox or vaccination x 2, or blood test to confirm immunity.
Blood tests are required for Hepatitis B and also for Measles, Rubella and Chicken Pox if there is no evidence in the students medical records. Immunisations are compulsory and are required for clinical placements.

The programme reflects educational developments and encourages reflection, self-reliance and deep learning in the programme - to prepare students for the challenges of employment within a changing health and social care system.

Teaching, learning and assessment are designed to ensure that successful students are able to:

Reflect on their experiences and learn from these.

Students’ learning is also supported by web based resources on Blackboard Learn with all modules having lecture and tutorial material posted on this site. Other features of Blackboard Learn are also utilised, such as on-line tests, virtual blackboards, discussion groups and podcasts.

The teaching and learning approaches are founded on the belief that occupational therapy should be grounded in evidence. This is achieved through the integration of academic and practice education which encourages evidence-based activity.

Programme, study and module block descriptors delineate learning outcomes to ensure clarity and promote the active preparation of students. Placements require students to reflect on their personal strengths and weaknesses and set objectives for their learning.
Completion of student evaluation forms requires students to appraise their own learning experiences.

All study and module blocks are core to the curriculum apart from one optional module in the second year, which must be chosen from four options. All modules are compulsory. This policy was adopted to ensure the programme meets with the professional requirements of the Health and Care Professions Council and the College of Occupational Therapists.

Assessment

The assessment procedures within the programme reflect the learning outcomes of each study and module block. Assessments are carried out in assessment blocks. The University term structure allows the student to have assessments spread across the academic year to assist learning.

In order to promote independent learning, a variety of assessment modes are used such as case studies, essays, practical assessments, placement reports, presentations, written examinations, literature reviews and a research dissertation. These assessments are designed to not only reflect master’s level academic requirements, but also professional skills in preparation for practice.

At the beginning of each year the student is provided with the assessment schedule, including assessment and feedback dates. Each assessment is explained clearly to students, both verbally and in the programme handbook, giving notification of assignment block requirements early in the commencement of the relevant study or module blocks. This information is also provided via Blackboard Learn (BBL). Preparation for assessment blocks is co-ordinated by the relevant year leader and undertaken through identified sessions within study blocks.

Occupational Therapists are skilled professionals who work in a range of health and social care settings to assist people to carry out activities that they want or need to do, but are prevented from doing, by circumstances such as ill-health, disability or ageing. This two-year, full time Occupational Therapy course is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required to be a safe and effective Occupational Therapist in a range of contemporary health and social care settings.

The pre-registration Masters degree has been designed to meet the needs of graduates with a first degree in a subject related to the discipline of Occupational Therapy (for example Psychology, Health Studies or similar). Using principles of enquiry based learning, the course is structured to encourage students to build on existing knowledge which will help to understand human function and dysfunction, to develop a range of practical and decision-making skills in relation to assessing need and delivering interventions for a range of individuals, and to understand contemporary influences affecting health and social care services. In addition, a research strand is delivered across both years of the course which assists to consolidate knowledge and skills in relation to the consumption of research, and builds towards the completion of an independent research project. The course also demonstrates a commitment to inter-professional working and provides a range of opportunities to learn with and from students enrolled on other professional courses.

Practice placements are included in both years of the course and provide opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in a range of practice settings. There are four periods of practice placement, ranging from four weeks to nine weeks. All are organised for students through the University Placements Office, apart from one elective placement, where students have a choice regarding the location and speciality, with opportunities for overseas placements.

The course utilises principles of enquiry based learning, in which students are signposted to areas of enquiry relevant to the level of learning and work in both groups and individually, to identify deficits in knowledge and the ways in which their learning can be facilitated. University sessions are used to introduce concepts, consolidate knowledge and to facilitate student learning in relation to the application of theoretical knowledge to occupational therapy practice.

Successful completion of the course will enable graduates to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council, in order to gain state registration to practice as an Occupational Therapist. Employment prospects are good with opportunities in traditional areas of practice such as acute hospitals, community health services, and social care, alongside emerging opportunities in non-traditional areas such as schools, employment services, and the voluntary sector. The skills acquired on the course will equip students to work in a number of diverse practice areas and could also lead to careers in research, education or case management. The MSc in Midwifery is a professional programme leading to registration for graduates with a first degree.

Midwives are the primary healthcare professionals in normal pregnancy and childbirth: they provide health and parent education, carry out antenatal and post-natal assessments, and support mothers and families through pregnancy and after the birth. They also provide care during labour and birth in a variety of settings, including home birth.

Professional accreditation

On successful completion of the midwifery master's programme, you will be entered onto the midwifery part of the register of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of the United Kingdom.

This course in detail

The following midwifery courses are offered:
- a three-year midwifery programme for those with a first class honours degree plus Biology or Human Biology A level at grade B or above. Previous health care experience is desirable, but not essential.

- a 21-month post-experience master’s degree for experienced adult nurses registered with the NMC who have a first class honours degree.

The practice and educational content of the course is the same as the BSc course; however, assessment will be at master's level. This will enhance development of critical thinking skills which will prepare students for further postgraduate studies. In addition, Midwifery MSc students will have the opportunity to undertake primary research for their dissertation.

During Year 1, you will undertake level 6 modules. In years 2 and 3 you will study level 7 modules.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be a fully qualified midwife and eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. http://www.nmc-uk.org/

Teaching and learning

We offer a friendly and stimulating learning environment; we consistently receive high satisfaction ratings for our student support and learning resources in student surveys. We have excellent teaching facilities, dedicated clinical skills suites and simulation resources, which include a well equipped movement laboratory, a family of computerised simulation manikins (including a simman, simbaby and birthing mother), an extensive range of anatomy models and fully networked computer rooms.

At Oxford Brookes, no professional group works in isolation. We teach a wide range of pre-qualification and foundation courses including health and social care, all branches of nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, osteopathy, operating department practice, paramedic emergency care, and social work. You will share your learning with these other health care students. This is a key component of the course as it is essential to developing your teamwork skills and your understanding of the other roles you will encounter in practice.

We have excellent library resources, accessible both through the web and through a range of locally based facilities on university and NHS sites.

Information technology plays an important role in health care courses and a very extensive range of learning resources can be accessed through ‘Brookes Virtual’, an online repository of lectures, handouts, information and learning exercises.

Careers

Midwifery is an exciting and diverse career choice. As the main healthcare professionals for the pregnant mother and her family throughout the childbearing process, midwives play a fundamental role in providing care and advice during pregnancy and birth, and in the postnatal period. Midwives are the experts in normal childbirth.

A master's degree in midwifery will provide a strong basis for a future career in research, education, management or consultancy. It is hoped that future graduates will influence midwifery practice in the UK and elsewhere.

Free language courses for students - the Open Module

Free language courses are available to full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students on many of our courses, and can be taken as a credit on some courses.

Please note that the free language courses are not available if you are:
- studying at a Brookes partner college
- studying on any of our teacher education courses or postgraduate education courses.

Research highlights

We have a number of both promising and experienced researchers working in established areas including maternal and women's public health, cancer care, children and families, drugs and alcohol, physical rehabilitation and enablement, and interprofessional education and collaborative practice. Over the past few years, these researchers have won external research and consultancy contracts including grants, fellowships and studentships for NHS staff. Our research staff collaborate with researchers from across Oxford Brookes University and from the Institute of Health Sciences at the University of Oxford, along with research teams from many other UK and international centres.

Our academic staff have extensive experience of NHS, clinical practice and general management at senior level. They also have a significant record of research and publications on a range of topics, including water birth and breast feeding. The currency of the course is also assured by the lecturers' close involvement in the maternity services and their movement between that sector and education.

This course enables graduates from any discipline to develop the theoretical, practical, analytical and evaluative skills necessary to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a physiotherapist. The purpose of the course is to produce physiotherapists who are self aware, skilled, critical, analytical, reflective and evaluative, independent learners who actually contribute to shaping the future health and wellbeing of the individual and society. Graduates from the course will be distinctive in their ability to synthesise evidence from current practice and research to develop an in-depth critical knowledge and understanding of the physiotherapy profession. Furthermore, they will be able to demonstrate a critical awareness of current issues within the provision of health and social care, and will be capable of demonstrating leadership in both personal and professional development.

Teaching, learning and assessment

There is a strong emphasis on student directed learning. A variety of assessment methods are used including written assignments, practical-like exams, presentations and reflective portfolios. Practice-based learning is a major component of the course, comprising more than 1,000 hours of study at clinical sites throughout Scotland.

In Year One you will complete a two-week foundation placement in semester one and two six-week placements over the summer. In Year Two you will undertake one six-week placement in semester two and one six-week and one four-week elective placement over the summer. Any additional travel and accommodation costs associated with placement will be borne by the student. Normally there are 32–34 students per year on this course. The year group is split into smaller groups for practical classes and some tutorials. This ensures that individuals receive excellent support and benefit from sharing their experiences with their classmates.

Teaching hours and attendance

This is a full-time course and students are expected to be available 9am-5pm Monday to Friday. Students should expect to study for an average of 40 hours per week. Timetabled classes are approximately 12- 15 hours per week.

Links with industry/professional bodies

On completion, you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a physiotherapist. You will also be eligible to apply for membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

10 credits: Introduction to Practice-based Learning H-level 15 credits: Preparing for Practice as and AHP/ Research Methods for Health Professionals/ Developing Innovative Physiotherapy Practice/ Supporting Health and Wellbeing 20 credits: Clinical Studies 1 CRP/ Clinical Studies 2 NMSK/ Clinical Studies 3 Neuro / Advancement of Physiotherapy Practice 40 credits: Foundations of Health Science You will also complete a dissertation (60 credits), plus 30 weeks of practice-based learning placements (105 level 10 credits).

Careers

The majority of graduates work as physiotherapists within the National Health Service – either in major hospitals or in the community. With further post-registration experience, graduates can choose to specialise in a particular area, which may include for example: sports, neurology, paediatrics, respiratory, orthopaedics or private practice. Some graduates choose to follow a research career path.
