The teaching is delivered by industry professionals and it emphasises professional collaborative workflows and the roles of all personnel in the Editing Department in the context of digital film production. COURSE OVERVIEW

The course will give students a fundamental understanding of the underlying technologies and workflows in use in the industry, with the opportunity to specialise in one chosen area. It offers a rigorous curriculum that combines theoretical training in a number of production technology disciplines with industry work experience placements and intensive training, enabling students to develop their own skills and understanding to provide a strong basis for a career in a wide range of relevant areas within television production.

Across the TV and film industries emerging technologies are enabling new creative opportunities both directly through production equipment and techniques and indirectly through new distribution platforms. The need for production technologists skilled in the latest developments is increasing, with numerous skills gaps apparent in the employment market. Moreover, some 60% of Broadcast engineers across Europe are within 10 years of retirement, according to the BBC Academy website. Specialists in a number of areas of Production Technology are in great demand from broadcasters, facilities companies, equipment manufacturers and systems integrators.

Production Technology is a very wide field covering traditional live studio and transmission support through to outside broadcasts, workflow design, media asset management and distribution systems across multiple delivery platforms – thus the potential career paths of graduates are numerous and varied.

Technology, both traditional and new, forms an essential part of the creative process and NFTS students are engaged in more productions as part of the curriculum than any of our competitors.

The course will provide:

- an in depth understanding of traditional and new technology and workflows enabling and supporting creation of content and delivery to broadcast and online services
- cutting-edge technological expertise in all stages of media production
- optional units and a professional placement with an industry partner allowing a specialised focus on an aspect of production technology

CURRICULUM

Year 1:

The first year will involve a combination of theory and practical work in which students will gain a detailed grounding in the basics of production technology from content generation to delivery. Emphasis will be placed on innovative thinking and designing solutions to support the creative ambitions of production teams and content platform providers. The School’s TV Studio, Single camera units, Post Production and Outside Broadcast facilities will be utilised. The main topics include:

- Media Technology Fundamentals
- Production, Post Production and distribution (Broadcast, IP) workflows
- TV Studio technology, workflows and support
- TV Outside Broadcast technology, workflows and support
- Single camera shooting technology, workflows and support
- Post Production technologies, workflow design and support
- Media Asset Management across production and delivery workflows
- Broadcast and non-linear distribution technologies, workflows and support

Year 2:

Specialisation in two of the following areas:
- Content Creation - Single camera, TV Studio, Outside Broadcasts
- Media management - MAM systems, workflows, systems design
- Post Production - Workflows, Media management, NLE offline, online, grading, audio mixing
- Delivery - Media management, transcoding workflows, delivery and distribution technologies

Placements will be arranged with partners in relevant areas and will form at least 20% of the second year.

A graduation piece in the form of a solution to a particular production or delivery issue including workflow and system design.

Students will be required to complete a dissertation.

This course commences in January each year. Our emphasis on collaboration means that Composing students are informed and involved throughout the filmmaking process. In particular, composers work closely with other students in Editing and Sound Post Production, increasing their understanding of the relationship between audio and moving images.

Today’s language of screen music has shifted. While many scores still provide a musical commentary on the action, others find a way to integrate music into the fabric of the film itself, creating a seamless weave analogous to the camerawork or editing, to the assimilation of music into the sound world of the film as a whole. Sound design and music grow ever closer - in fact, the roles of sound designer and composer are becoming blurred to the extent that a close collaboration between the two processes is often essential.

The application of music to film - the choices inherent in the "when", "how" and "why" - all stem from an informed understanding of the intention of the film and the contribution music could make to it. Informed understanding, musical versatility and the fostering of an individual musical voice are the intentions of this course and these are determined by the practical and intellectual demands on composers working in the industry.

Composing graduates are qualified to take on all forms of work in film and television as well as productions in multimedia and interactive programming.

TUTORS

Acting Head of Composing is the BAFTA-nominated composer (and NFTS graduate) John Keane, whose credits include Hornblower,Mansfield Park, Tara Road, Inspector George Gently, Hideous Kinky.

ALUMNI

Recent graduate composing credits include Atonement which netted NFTS graduate Dario Marianelli an Oscar, Golden Globe and Ivor Novello in the Best Original Score category; Wallander, the television drama series, and feature film Endgame, both of which earned BAFTAs for Best Original Score for NFTS graduate Martin Phipps. Martin also received Emmy Award Nominations for his scores on Great Expectations and Sense and Sensibility. Composer Rob Lane also received Emmy nominations for his scores on Longford and HBO's John Adams, as well as winning a BAFTA for Elizabeth I (TV) and a nomination for Jane Eyre.

CURRICULUM

The Composing course is developmental and progressive. In year one, students are taught the techniques and contexts which inform writing music for the screen. The first term comprises an intensive process during which students compose to a variety of exercises, each one chosen to focus on a particular problem of film composition. These exercises are completed by each student and discussed in seminars and individually assessed. In term two, further exercises concentrate on issues having to do with scoring for live instruments, the combination of live and electro-acoustic elements and the integration a limited range of sound design into film scores. In addition, students will begin engaging with projects generated by other students at the NFTS. This process will continue and dominate the third term. Each student contribution to those films will also be assessed. Students will also participate in visits from industry professionals.

In year two, students’ activities will be dominated primarily by work generated from other parts of the school. However, lectures, seminars and the occasional workshop will be provided to clarify and expand issues arising from those projects. As in year 1, students will also participate in visits from industry professionals.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The Composing MA course is part of the Post Production department, where we are looking to assemble a group of students with diverse and varied backgrounds. There is no 'typical' student or perfect candidate who conforms to a mandatory list of qualifications. You might have had some Industry experience in your chosen field, or a background in the arts or other media. You may now be looking for a further professional qualification, or wish to broaden your knowledge of composing for screen, taking you to a higher level of work.

Students normally have a degree in music but applicants with equivalent practical experience are also accepted; some composing experience is preferred. We look for composers with a strong personal style, a flexible approach and an intelligent feel for drama and narrative. Candidates should normally be able to notate the music they wish to be performed acoustically, have an understanding of the main historical styles and be able to communicate with others using non-musical terms. It is essential that applicants have a strong and demonstrable interest in film.

On receipt of the application form, duly completed and signed, each applicant will be provided with a link and password to download two film clips. They will be asked to write music to each of these clips, and return their completed work as Quicktime video files with sound and music track, either as downloadable links or as DVD’s sent to the school.

The MA Film Production course is for gifted and emerging filmmakers seeking to learn on the job, to go beyond the short film, to define themselves as artists within a working film production crew, and to gain that vital production experience demanded by the industry.

Work Placements | In line with the courses’s emphasis on industry experience, you will be encouraged to undertake, seek out short-term work opportunities in your field. These can occur when your pathway is normally not involved in a particular production stage, for example with production designers during post-production. This course offers a unique opportunity for students to gain understanding and use of digital media design and technologies for the purpose of branding. This programme aims to fill a gap by developing the knowledge and practical experience of both digital design and branding concepts.

Digital Branding Strategy
The main aim of this module is provide students with understanding and skills to (i) develop a strategic approach to branding and its relationship to digital design and organisational performance, (ii) to evaluate the current state of the relationship of branding to digital design, digital promotion and management and (iii) to build future scenarios in response to new trends.

Multimedia Research Directions
The module will introduce concepts of different types of research, present methods to identify research topic and formulate approach, prepare plan for research and provide guidance on performing research experiments and evaluating novel systems and artefacts. In this module internationally renowned researchers and practitioners in creative media design will be invited to speak in seminars to the MSc students.

Digital Promotion
In this module students will study digital promotion media and means, with the focus on creative execution: Social Media Marketing, Online Advertising, Public Relations, E-mail marketing, etc; case study of successful digital campaigns and businesses.

Digital Design
The aim of this module is to provide theoretical and practical skills of digital design in the context of creative digital branding; graphic design, layout, typography, etc; the module to include a practical design project.

Digital Media Technologies
This module offers understanding and appreciation of the various digital media technologies in the context of creative digital branding.

Advanced 3D Technologies
The aim of this module to cover advanced 3D and associated technologies including, generative 3D modelling, real-time graphics, animation and human movement and machine acquisition techniques. Complex forms will be visualized, simulated and tested on screen. The module will also explore the latest developments in rapid prototyping virtual reality and other forms of visualization.

Multimedia and Interaction Design
The aim of this module is to demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of state-of-the-art technologies revolving around the various interactive possibilities with digital media in the academic and commercial worlds. To demonstrate theoretical and practical knowledge of graphic design, photography and video within the context of interactive digital media.

Audio Visual Post Production
This module will develop the students’ knowledge, skills and understanding of post-production and compositing to a professional level, with a particular focus on visual post production, but supported by a study of relevant audio post production techniques and principles.

Masters Project - Digital Campaign
Develop a digital campaign for a chosen brand, product or service. The focus of work to be on the development of a digital promotional artefact (e.g. a collection of viral videos, a viral game), but the project to involve the full cycle of a campaign management: market research (product and user), budget development, media planning and distribution, evaluation of campaign effectiveness.

Assessment

The core units contain both formative and summative assessments, and it is during these units that you should learn the range of competencies and knowledge necessary to succeed on the course.

For your project work you can undertake either an extended digital film technology project (working in groups or individually) or a dissertation on relevant theoretical topic. The course utilises: oral presentations of academic arguments; oral pitches of stories; essays; case study projects; self-reflective logs and a wide range of practical work.

The assessment philosophy of the MSc begins with understanding your individual starting position. The industry -

The UK film industry as a whole continues to go from strength to strength, with the number of companies involved in the film industry growing by 32% since 2009. As online video content becomes more and more popular, video production skills have become increasingly sought after by employers.

Many past students are running their own production businesses, working as in-house practitioners or securing budgets for creative projects through crowd-funding. This course will help students prepare for careers in video production, post-production, directing, producing and cinematography.

The programme -

This exciting course focuses on independent film-making and current practices in the film industry. Students will experiment with creative ideas from the outset, taking advantage of our industry-standard facilities, training and equipment.

Along the way students will be challenged to develop their own personal style of filmmaking, exploring new ideas and collaborating with other postgraduate students. Up-to-the-minute teaching and instruction help students to build on these skills and work towards their chosen career.

The MA in Film Production is a 1 year full-time programme that begins in October of each year, and offers graduate students opportunities to undertake intensive study in production skills in 16mm film and video.
The programme provides instruction in sound recording and design, camerawork, lighting, editing, scriptwriting, budgeting and directing.
The Department of Media is housed in a purpose built complex with professionally designed studios, cutting rooms and editing facilities.

Course Description
This MA Programme is aimed particularly at people who have a good first degree in a subject such as film, television, or media studies but who have limited practical experience. Good honours degrees in other subjects, together with evidence of a serious interest in film and video production outside a formal academic context, may also be appropriate.

This MA Programme will suit people who want a general introduction to all areas of pre-production, production and post-production within 16mm film and digital video. Although some degree of specialisation is possible this MA should be seen as a general introduction to all areas. One of the advantages of this approach is that all our MA students are encouraged to write and direct their own films.

During the first term of the programme (October - December) students undertake a number of familiarisation exercises in film and video, developing pre-production, production and post-production skills. These exercises include 4 short 16mm productions and a number of video productions. These are carried out in small teams and it should be noted that teamwork is a major focal point of this MA.
In the second term (January - March), the programme concentrates on the further development of skills in scriptwriting, cinematography, directing, sound design/dubbing with ProTools, editing with Avid and compositing with After Effects. During this term students carry out the pre-production for their assessed film/video.
This is then shot and edited in the final term (April - June). A budget of up to £500 is provided to cover the basic costs of production. Students receive support through individual tutorials, group seminars and studio classes.


The MA in Film Production is predominantly practical but it should not be seen only as a vocational preparation. Its important theoretical component is related to the practical side and a weekly two-hour session covers theoretical issues such as narrative style, representation or national identity. In addition, students are obliged to attend weekly screenings and playbacks in the final year undergraduate courses.
During July, August and September students research and write a 12000 word dissertation on the theory underpinning their assessed film.

Resources
The Department's video equipment includes DVC-PRO video cameras (equivalent to Digibeta), tracks, doorway dolly, jib, specialist lighting gear, editing on AVID Xpress Pro, sound dubbing in a digital dubbing suite using ProTools, and software such as Photoshop, After Effects and Flash. There is also a newly equipped 3 camera TV Studio using digital widescreen cameras, gallery with digital desk and sound room with 32 channel mixer.

Our film resources offer fully professional 16mm and Super 16 opportunities, using Arriflex, Aaton and Bolex cameras, Nagra sound recorders, solid state recorders, a fully equipped studio and portable lighting kits for location work.

Outside the Department there is a student run campus radio station, in which many students participate. BBC regional radio (Radio Kent) also operates a studio in the Media building and offers student involvement with professional broadcasting.

Student Destinations
Students who successfully complete the MA have gone onto a wide range of Media related careers often starting at the assistant level and moving up from there. A number of ex-students work within Camera Departments, Producing and Feature Film Editing. Lecturing within Further Education and Higher Education has also been a particularly successful employment route.

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course commences in January each year. This course explores the many ways in which the cinematographer participates in the collaborative process of translating screenplays into meaningful and stimulating films. Exercises, workshops, masterclasses and productions, supported by critical and analytical study of the history and development of cinematography, give students a solid foundation in the art and craft of their future career.

The aim is to improve and expand the students' technical knowledge and skills using all of the above mentioned methods of image capture.

Cinematography graduates are in demand in the UK, Europe and the US and go on to work in both film and television. Recent new graduates have found work as 2nd Unit DoPs on feature films, and have shot commercials, episodic television series and documentaries for Channel 4, Granada and BSkyB, as well as short films and TV programmes for a variety of independent production companies.

The Head of department is BAFTA and BIFA-winning and EMMY-nominated cinematographer Brian Tufano BSC, whose credits include Trainspotting and Billy Elliott. CURRICULUM

Creative expression is developed alongside technical expertise. As well as film, training in High Definition, Digital Cinema and Digital Post Production is an integral part of the course. Visual storytelling is emphasised alongside the art of creating mood and evoking emotion through the right combination of composition and lighting. Working closely with students of other specialisations, student cinematographers have a creative involvement in fiction, animation and documentary films, commercials and multicamera television, lighting and shooting several productions during their time at the School.

During the course students will be provided with tutorials, seminars, screen studies, workshops and master classes with specialist tutors and visiting professionals. All workshops and master classes are mandatory. Through Tutorials students will be guided towards finding their own criteria for self assessment and finding their own individual challenges. The aim of the tutorials is to encourage the student to get the best out of themselves through discussions and critiques with their peers and through an awareness of self. While supportive overall, tutorials will have an element of critique and challenge. They should allow the student to step back and reflect on their own work.

Seminars will deal with stylistic approaches, principles of optics and photographic and video theory. Special attention will be given to the importance of relationships and interaction with other specialisations, like directors, editors, designers, sound and post production. Also, regular seminars and lectures will be conducted on Screen Art. Screen Art is crucial to broaden students' critical understanding of the art of cinema. This need is satisfied by providing systematic screenings, special events, seminars, discussions and analysis. These happen throughout the two year course.

Workshops and Practical Exercises are designed to teach most aspects of traditional and digital cinematography - cameras, lenses, grip equipment, originating materials (film stock/tape), light meters, location lighting, studio lighting, day for night, night for night, filming in moving vehicles and also film grammar, crew roles, studio protocol, laboratory procedures and special visual effects. The aim is also to develop responsibility and professionalism. This is supported and overseen by the teaching staff, who aim to challenge and nurture the student’s talent without undermining their independence.

Production Exercises provide a valuable experience in that they enable the student to work as part of a creative team. The cinematographer is able to utilise the skills and knowledge acquired whilst taking part in Workshops and Exercises.

Unlike other Schools, all production costs are met by the school. In addition you will be given a cash Production Budget. NFTS students are engaged in more productions as part of the curriculum than any of our competitors.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

We are looking for people with innate talent. Therefore previous training in these areas is not mandatory but some basic technical knowledge is required. Experience gained from working in the camera department of the film and television industry is helpful but is not essential.

You must have an understanding of the role of the Director of Photography and its creative and logistical responsibilities. You would also need to be able to demonstrate good communication and collaborative skills and leadership qualities.

You must have a good understanding of “cinematic language” and demonstrate this in your submitted film material.

We would like to see examples of your work that are exclusively yours. The showreel must contain fiction filming. It should demonstrate a strong visual sensibility and an awareness of the considerations of camera operating, composition and lighting and their potential for creating mood and atmosphere. Most importantly your fiction film should have a clear element of visual narrative and show your ability to tell a story with images, using all the elements that can be brought to contribute to it. This we refer to as “cinematic language”.

Materials submitted with your application should be of a good technical standard. Provide an Authored DVD of your submission film(s) for playback in a non-commercial DVD player. We will not accept Data DVDs (no Quicktime files).

CURRICULUM

This unique modular course has been designed to keep pace with changes in technology and Industry practice.

You’ll control many of your own projects from start to finish. You learn by ‘doing’ as well as understanding theory, developing a variety of practical and creative skills from planning, budgeting, storyboarding and pre-visualisation through filming, CGI creation, VFX creation and finally post production and delivery.

Several modules are shared with other departments within the NFTS - such as the popular Take One Painting project - and the Digital FX students participate individually, or as teams, on many of the other NFTS students’ film and TV projects.

You learn what to do and then get a chance to do it for real. Problem solving is paramount.

Year One begins with a series of core modules shared by all three Digital FX disciplines (Compositing, Colour, CG 3D) which the whole cohort of students undertake:
The Common Agenda; The Fundamentals (inc. Motion Graphics);3D CG (Maya); Introduction to Tracking /Match Move; Take One Painting (Maya & Nuke); 2D/3D Compositing (Nuke); Previsualisation; Physical and Practical SFX.

After 9 months of common tuition, students would then choose to specialise further in one of three areas:

As with all other MA specialisations at the NFTS the Digital FX students would complete a dissertation over the period of the course informing and reflecting on their practice, and work on the 2nd Year Graduate Film and TV Productions.

For the duration of the course, every Digital FX student has a dedicated computer workstation loaded with the latest 2D and 3D software applications including Maya, Nuke, PF Track, After Effects/Photoshop and many other specialist applications.

Working closely with Industry partners, students will also benefit from a wide range of workshops and masterclasses run by Industry professionals. Carefully selected practical work placements may also be available.
Unlike other schools, all production costs are met by the School. In addition you will be given a cash Production Budget. NFTS students are engaged in more productions as part of the curriculum than any of our competitors.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The course covers such a diverse range of subjects that there is no typical candidate. Your background may be in the arts or other media or you may be a recent graduate or Industry professional looking to fast-track or switch your career.

Although not strictly necessary, you are likely to have some Industry experience or training in your chosen field and you must already understand the basic technical and operational use of computers.

An ideal candidate should have a mixture of creative and technical skills. Communication, people and management skills are also desirable.

Your application should be supported by a brief outline of your particular interests in the Compositing, Colour Grading or CG 3D fields including any relevant experience, either academic or practical.

You must indicate in your application which specialism you wish to study during the second year:

either Compositing or CG 3D or Colour.

- A critical analysis of the use of visual effects or colour grading in a film or television programme of your choice, no more than two sides A4 typed.

- A brief outline of your particular interests in the Compositing, Colour Grading or CG 3D fields including any relevant experience, either academic or practical. One side A4 maximum.

- A DVD or portfolio containing samples of your work. This need not demonstrate experience in effects. For applicants not from a film or television background, this item is optional.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Working as a Graphics and Titles Designer in Film and Television involves design and production of graphics elements for TV channels, series, individual programmes, films and promotions. At its most complex this could be supervising the shoot of multi pass animations using a motion control studio or on location. Most of the work, however is producing and implementing templates for use in studios and post production suites to enhance the look of the output and to reinforce and support broadcaster, channel, genre and programme branding.

Graphics and Titles professionals design and implement moving and stationary graphics used for branding and presentation of information. On some high end shows they operate the graphics generator in the studio gallery but, in most instances, they create templates for use by graphics operators, editors and vision mixers.

To do this role, you will need to:

CURRICULUM

This course combines practical experience on TV Entertainment, Science and Natural History and Sports shows with industry work experience placements and intensive training.

The course has been developed to meet industry demand and NFTS students are engaged in more productions as part of the curriculum than any of our competitors.

The diploma course is 12 months full-time and is delivered at the NFTS:

Specifically students will learn about:

- Type and typography in a TV context
- Graphic design for TV entertainment
- Graphic design for TV Sport
- Graphic design for TV Promotion
- Workflows supporting each genre above

The course is broken into three terms.

Term 1 (January – April)
In the first term of the course you will study Type and typography in TV, the general principals of working on entertainment and sports shows and on promotions. You will receive training on a number or relevant software packages.

You will produce work in response to a number of given briefs for film and television shows.

Term 2 (May – September)
Design elements produced this term may include opening titles, stings, end credits other on-screen graphics.

You will then go on a work placement at Sky.

In terms 1 and 2 students will complete Graphics and Titles work to briefs set by the lead tutor. These projects will ensure students portfolios include the key type of work to secure work on graduation.

Term 3 (September – December)
You will work on a variety of grad shows at the NFTS and choose one of these as your graduation project. This will be a major piece of original work and will include:

- Storyboard(s) to guide and support the iterative design process with the production team
- Production of a style guide for the show which will be useable on screen and in printed form. This style guide must include the rationale for all design elements and must specify how these elements can and, critically, cannot be used to ensure that your design and branding objectives are achieved.
- Production of opening titles, stings and closing credits.
- Production of graphics templates for use in the studio and in post production.
- Support the production team through all stages of the production process with design and graphics production workflow advice and graphics production and operational services to ensure the highest quality final result.

PLACEMENT

Each student will complete a placement at Sky for 4 weeks.
