Course Overview

If you want to teach or train young people or adults, we offer a range of ways to achieve a post-16 PGCE or Certificate in Education. The PGCE and PCE Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET) programmes are designed for those teaching/training or wanting to pursue a career in post 16 contexts, e.g. higher, further, adult, community, vocational training in industry, commerce or other professions, school sixth forms, 14-19 school/tertiary courses.

A key emphasis is placed on the connection between practice and theory throughout our programmes. We focus on achieving excellent outcomes for trainees to become outstanding professionals, who understand the power of education to transform the lives of individuals and fulfil individual potential.

A recognised teaching qualification is now essential for all teachers working in post-compulsory education and training. Obtaining this qualification can be a stepping stone to further study and for career development and progression in the sector.

This is a unique, visionary and pioneering programme offering professional training in Dance & Somatic Movement Education. On the cutting edge of contemporary international practice, exploring the creative skills required to use movement with sensitivity, imagination and individuality, the course focuses on community facilitation. It offers the opportunity to study individual and group improvisation, kinaesthetic awareness and applied somatics philosophy to dance and movement studies. All sessions are taught in the spirit of self-discovery, non-judgement and reflection. The course develops somatic awareness with a focus on spontaneity, intuition and connection to others.

MA Dance & Somatic Well-being is an Approved Somatic Movement Training Programme of the International Somatic Movement Education Therapy Association (ISMETA).

The MA course fulfils all the educational requirements needed to become a professional member of ISMETA. To complete the professional practice requirements students need at least 150 extra hours of practice, post graduation.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The programme is predominantly delivered through studio work, lectures, seminars, and tutorials. Given this is a body-based vocational course, most classes take place in the studio where creative ideas are explored through movement and other art forms. We provide a lively learning environment and encourage you to participate actively in all aspects of the course delivery.

Methods of assessment include workshop facilitation, essays and other written assignments (Critique of workshops and self-evaluation, Reflective Journal, Chapter review), class presentations and a research project.

Dance & Somatic Wellbeing: Connections to the Living Body centres on the lived-felt-body through explorations in the imaginal, sensuous, emotional, spiritual, and philosophical aspects of the body. This course sees somatic movement as a practical life tool through which to promote wellbeing, develop a more holistic sense of self, and a capacity to be in relationship with others and our environment. COURSE OVERVIEW

The components of the soundtrack – dialogue, atmospheres, Foleys, ADR, designed fx and music – are explored in detail using facilities rivalling those of the best audio post-production houses. With a firm emphasis on storytelling, students develop an aesthetic awareness integrated with technical expertise, encouraging them to be collaborators from an early stage in all productions and throughout the whole post-production process.

In 2016, an NFTS student won the Verna Fields Award for Best Sound Editing in the student category of the US Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Awards. This is the 13th time a graduating NFTS student has won this award in the last 20 years and, together with the demand for new graduates, demonstrates the esteem with which this course is regarded within the film and television industry.

CURRICULUM

The course represents a steady progression beginning with the basic technology and skills that underpin and support the creative process and ending with the responsibility for sound design on a range of graduation films. At each stage additional skills are added through specific workshops - e.g. music recording, to provide a comprehensive education that is of great value in understanding and communicating with other industry professionals.

Using the latest equipment and technology, students work as sound designers on fiction, documentary and animation projects developing their skills in digital tracklaying and mixing.

YEAR ONE

This course is for therapeutic radiographers and will enable you to develop your professional knowledge and enhance your clinical and research skills. The modules on this course have been selected with the development and progression of the therapeutic radiography profession in mind.

Teaching, learning and assessment

The teaching and assessment strategies will enable you to develop your full potential by recognising and building on prior knowledge and experience and by facilitating development of subject-related and transferable skills. There are various forms of assessment including case study analysis, portfolio of evidence of practice, essays, written examination and a project containing evidence of research methods and analysis will be used to monitor your progress. Class sizes for attendance based modules are normally around 8-10 students. This ensures that students receive excellent support from tutors and benefit from sharing experiences with peers.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module which you study on campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Your attendance at QMU will depend on which module you are studying.

The aim of the Pg Cert/Dip/MSc Social Work in Mental Health/ Mental Health route is to achieve Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) training so that you can put yourself forward for AMHP status. This is achieved through the use of critical analysis, synthesis and reflective skills, both through study as well as practice. The course seeks to further the development of practitioners of mental health care by enabling them to become creative, innovative and effective practitioners. This programme is open to a variety of social workers and health care workers who currently engage with people with varying mental health needs.

Course overview:
The course is aimed at people who have 2 years post qualification mental health experience and wish to practice as an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) or existing AMHPs who wish to gain a Post Graduate Diploma or MSc in mental health, including a Higher Specialist award for registered social workers.

Lecturers are experts in mental health practice and education. The programme has a national reputation for delivering mental health teaching and modules offered include the deprivation of liberty safeguards.

Entry Requirements:
To access the course you must:
• Be able to demonstrate your ability to study at this level of learning
• Be two years Post Qualified as a; Social Worker, Nurse, Occupational Therapist or Psychologist

Course structure:
The Pg Cert / Dip / MSc Social Work in Mental Health /Mental Health is offered as a 2-year part-time degree programme. It is a part taught and part practice course that aims to integrate theory and practice, through work, supervision and reflection on practice.

The route consists of seven modules of study, five of which constitute the core (AMHP compulsory) modules. A further two modules complete the pathway.

Depending on the modules taken, the awards offered will vary. The schema below indicates this.
All modules have a minimum of 6 taught days at university and direct contact with tutors. The placements are divided into two blocks of 5 days for shadowing experience and a block placement of 45 days.

All placements are supervised by a practice assessor.

The law module has 10 taught days which is unique to the region and is welcomed by local partner agencies and employers. Study days have been built in the programme and you will be allocated a tutor for support throughout the programme.

You will be awarded a Post Graduate Certificate/Diploma on completion of 6 modules and a MSc Mental Health on completion of the whole programme.

The evaluation of the programme by students and external examiners in terms of teaching and learning and quality has, to date, been excellent.

Placements, Study Visits Available:
The programme offers you learning opportunities in a range of settings within mental health practice including community mental health teams, home treatments, hospital settings, forensic teams. Assertive outreach teams, children and adolescent mental health services and older adults.

Assessment:
Involves an assessment of both theory and practice.
Each module (or double module) is assessed as a ‘stand alone’ item. Practice assessment involves a triumvirate approach between the practice supervisor, you and the pathway leader. Competencies are identified for each practice module and you are assessed against these over a period of time. You are required to demonstrate "evidence" of competency through the compilation of a portfolio that also contains written work that is reflective of practice. The core theme of the assessment approach is about how you understand the use of theory to enhance practice and, indeed, to demonstrate personal growth and development. Assessment in the core modules follows a more traditional academic path but the link to practice is not lost. The themes of the assessment are also about aspects of practice. As you will be assessed academically for the core modules and clinically for pathway specific modules you will need to have a practice supervisor for your placement.

These courses provides the opportunity for lifelong learning and the awards given on graduation forms the basis for progression into further study.

The industry -

The UK film industry as a whole continues to go from strength to strength, with the number of companies involved in the film industry growing by 32% since 2009. As online video content becomes more and more popular, video production skills have become increasingly sought after by employers.

Many past students are running their own production businesses, working as in-house practitioners or securing budgets for creative projects through crowd-funding. This course will help students prepare for careers in video production, post-production, directing, producing and cinematography.

The programme -

This exciting course focuses on independent film-making and current practices in the film industry. Students will experiment with creative ideas from the outset, taking advantage of our industry-standard facilities, training and equipment.

Along the way students will be challenged to develop their own personal style of filmmaking, exploring new ideas and collaborating with other postgraduate students. Up-to-the-minute teaching and instruction help students to build on these skills and work towards their chosen career.

“The Northern Ireland Curriculum aims to empower young people to achieve their potential and to make informed and responsible decisions throughout their lives.” The overall aim of our PGCE programme at Ulster is to support this aim and to foster the development of pedagogical competences in the following three areas: Professional Values and Practice; Professional Knowledge and Understanding and Professional Skills and Application. a) Formal lectures are a core activity in teaching the Professional Studies generic component of all modules being the most effective way of teaching large classes. Access is provided to lecture notes which are posted on the PGCE's Virtual Learning Environment site.

b) Practical classes are fundamental to the study of pedagogy and the delivery of taught material in the main subject area. As outlined in the module descriptors, students engage in a diverse range of practical classes including work done in ICT labs. All practical classes are designed to develop core teaching skills and to link subject pedagogy to research and professional development. Health and Safety procedures in the classroom are emphasised in practical classes.

c) Seminars are used not only to extend the lecture topics but also equip students with the skills to seek relevant research material and to present the material as a lucid exposition and argument within a given time frame. With the increasing amount of information available on the internet, the knowledge and skills to select appropriate, educationally sound material are vital to all potential teachers.

Assignments include structured essays, literature reviews, case studies, word-limited reports, poster presentations and the practical ICT Portfolio. It is expected that all students should be able to write a fully referenced educational/curriculum studies paper as evidenced by the School- Based Projects at Master’s level.

It’s particularly aimed at graduates who don’t already work in early years but who may be looking for a career move. It’s also a great option for overseas graduates who are looking to enter the teaching profession within England.

This course is offered on both a full- and part-time basis. The full-time course is a School Direct programme delivered in partnership with the Durham and Newcastle Teaching Alliance. The course is school or early years setting-led, which means you’ll spend most of your time within a designated school or early years setting. It underpins all of the training requirements outlined by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) and has been flexibly designed to suit your needs.

This is a School Direct Route which includes substantial placement experience, for graduates with little or no experience of working with children aged 0 to 5 years but wish to pursue a career as an Early Years Teacher. Etherley Lane Nursery School is one of the ‘Lead’ schools in the Durham Teaching School Alliance. The teaching school alliance is a partnership of good and outstanding primary phase schools which includes nursery schools, infant schools, primary schools with Foundation Stage Units and providers from the private and voluntary sector. Working collaboratively with key strategic partners the alliance provides a range of services to schools and settings including the delivery of the new Early Years School Direct initial teacher training programme.

Etherley Lane Nursery School, together with its partner schools and settings works closely with Northumbria University, the accredited Initial Teacher Training Provider, to offer an innovative and specialized programme in early childhood development from birth to five.

Skills Tests

Entrants for Initial Teacher Education programmes need to be aware of Government regulations regarding mandatory skills tests in numeracy and literacy.The skills tests do not replace the GCSE grade C or above entry requirements. Applicants are encouraged to sit the skills tests prior to interview although this is not essential, however, a firm offer of a place on the programme can only be made once all entry requirements have been met.

Applicants are advised that they will receive one free test and two resit opportunities which will need to be self-funded. If applicants fail three tests, resits will not be allowed within a 24 month period. The skills tests are computerized and can be taken at any of a number of Learn Direct test centres throughout the UK. The Department for Education has developed guidance and support materials to help candidates pass the tests: candidates are strongly advised to review the support material before attempting the skills tests. If any candidate is likely to experience difficulties taking a test and has needs that entitle them to reasonable adjustments, they can apply for special arrangements.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

The MA in Interpreting programme is offered in two pathways: a multilingual and a Chinese pathway. Experienced interpreters and academics will guide you through the main principles, specific techniques and professional requirements of interpreting.

Learning is conducted via a combination of regular language pair-specific practice, multilingual simulations of real-life interpreting scenarios and background lectures.

Our state-of-the-art facilities enable you to practise each interpreting mode in the most realistic environment possible.

You will have access to three conference suites equipped with ISO approved double interpreting booths, a portable interpreting system for training in mobile interpreting (used for museum or factory tours) and a two-way and multipoint videoconferencing system to simulate remote interpreting.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The MA Interpreting is studied over one year (full-time mode) only.

Language-specific options are paired with English. If you are a native speaker of English, you can take up to two Consecutive and Dialogue Interpreting options (in another language). If you are not a native speaker of English, you will normally take one Consecutive and Dialogue Interpreting option (your mother tongue paired with English).

You can also choose one ab initio language if you wish to expand your portfolio of translation languages.

In the interpreting practice modules you will gain invaluable experience of real working conditions and opportunities for experiential learning and reflective analysis.Our simulations are joined by professionals from a variety of fields who participate as live guest speakers on a case-by- case basis.

The practice-based components of the programme are complemented by background lectures which will help you to understand the major principles of interpreting and provide you with a conceptual and methodological framework for analysing, discussing and justifying interpreting-related decisions.

State-of- the-art facilities are in place to enable you to practise each interpreting mode in the most realistic environment possible. You will have access to three conference suites equipped with ISO approved double interpreting booths to practise simultaneous interpreting according to professional standards.

A portable interpreting system allows for training in mobile interpreting, for instance simulating the tour of a museum, factory or plant.

Our facilities also include a two-way and multipoint videoconferencing system that makes it possible to simulate remote interpreting, with clients and interpreters interacting via video link.

The programme pays particular attention to the emerging forms of distance interpreting, which are an increasingly important feature in the professional landscape. We are the first university to teach remote and mobile interpreting based on research findings in this area.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

In addition to enjoying regular contact with professional interpreters in your practice-based modules, throughout the academic year you will benefit from course components that specifically address the business and industry aspects of the profession.

Insights into the industry will, for example, be provided by external guest speakers we invite to our Translation Studies seminars.

These include professional translators, interpreters, subtitlers and audio describers; professionals working in public services, companies and international organisations; representatives of professional translator/interpreter associations as well as translation/interpreting researcher.

Graduation from the MA Interpreting will enable you to apply for membership of the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI).

In line with our aim to offer professionally relevant programmes, we have forged close links with the main professional bodies: the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) and the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL). You can join these bodies as a student member during the course and then become a full member after graduation.

In addition, we work closely with many language service providers and are a member of the European Language Industry Association (ELIA), which gives you the possibility to apply for a work placement with its various translation and interpreting companies that are members of ELIA.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Thanks to our continued emphasis on professional development, you will be well-equipped to begin work as freelancer or in-house interpreter at international organisations, government bodies, universities and private companies.

We also regularly have students who decide to stay on to study for a PhD and pursue an academic career in Translation and Interpreting Studies.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

This MA programme prepares graduates to work as interpreters at the highest levels of professional communication in a wide range of settings, including conference, dialogue and video-mediated ones.

Due to the requirements and complexities of interpreting in such contexts, the programme combines the study of the major principles of, and scholarly approaches to, Interpreting with opportunities for application and practice – with the aim of enabling students to:
-Perform relevant interpreting tasks in different contexts, including conference, business, legal and healthcare settings
-Reflect on their own practice, using scholarly and professional writing on relevant aspects of interpreting
-Transfer the acquired skills and knowledge to novel and unpredictable situations of interpreting

Furthermore, the need for interpreting is growing due to the impact of globalisation and migration, and the interpreting landscape is changing due to the impact of new technologies. In accordance with this, the programme will provide insights into recent developments and related research – with the aim of enabling the students to:
-Develop a broad understanding of current and future challenges of interpreting in different contexts
-Apply scholarly approaches to critically evaluate professional practice in the light of current and future requirements
-Instil in students the capacity for carrying out independent research in an area interpreting
