The industry-relevant Maritime Operations Management Masters programme is designed to meet the changing needs of the global maritime industry.

You’ll gain the tools to manage ports, shipping operations, maritime law, and maritime safety. When you graduate you’ll have the skills you need to secure positions at the highest level within this competitive worldwide industry.

This programme covers the essential critical awareness of business, financial and management strategies, including markets, customers, finance, people, operations and ICT. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, you’ll learn how to find solutions to marine operations management problems.

Who is it for?

The course is designed for people who wish to make a career in the marine and offshore industries and who have either developed some experience in industry, maritime or otherwise, or have a sound academic basis or skills upon which to build.

During the course, in addition to gaining an understanding of the underlying principles upon which the industry is based, students will also gain confidence in the interpersonal and international cultural skills which are essential to senior roles in the maritime industries.

Objectives

The Maritime Operations and Management course is designed for existing professionals serving in the industry as well as those looking for a career within the maritime, offshore and sea transport industries. For those already within the industry applicants are likely to have a responsible sea-going or middle-management position. Alternatively, new entrants to the industry are likely to have attained a first degree in a related technical or management subject.

This modular course is focused towards giving students the necessary knowledge and skills to help them achieve high levels of attainment in their careers in the maritime and offshore industries. Indeed, many former students on this course have now reached board level appointments in their various companies.

The course takes place in Piraeus, Greece, offering the experience of studying at the esteemed Hellenic Lloyd's Register. You will have access to our online resources as well as the prestigious Kaiti Laskaridis Library collection during your study.

Placements

Students may undertake short placements of normally one to two weeks, if they wish. These are normally undertaken with shipping and insurance companies.

This activity does give the student some further understanding of the industry, if they have no previous industry experience.

Teaching and learning

The course is taught by some 12 lecturers who come from academia and industry. These are supported by guest lecturers drawn from various parts of the marine industry.

Assessment

Each subject has coursework associated with it and this normally comprises two essays which probe the student's abilities for critical analysis. Examinations are held twice per year with 3 subjects examined in the spring and the remainder in autumn. To pass the student must gain 50% in each of the coursework and examination elements.

The project is a major piece of work which results in a dissertation on a chosen subject. This is examined by the dissertation content and viva-voce examination.

Modules

The Maritime Operations and Management course is a distance learning option of the long standing course taught in London. The course is taught in Piraeus by the same lecturers as in London and adheres to the same syllabus and is overseen by the same External Examiner. Contact hours in Piraeus are the same as in London.

The course comprises eight taught modules: six compulsory and two elective to suit the student’s needs and future career aspirations. Outside of the block taught module students are expected to read around the subjects developed in the lectures, undertake coursework and prepare for examinations in the compulsory subjects.

This 18 month course is taught at weekends (spaced out during the period of the course) to enable students to meet employment or other commitments.

Completion of modules and examinations will lead to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma. Alternatively, if in addition, a project followed by a dissertation is undertaken by a student, this will lead to the award of a Master’s degree.

Core modules are all taught in Greece. With regards to the elective modules, two are offered in Piraeus to enable the course to be wholly completed in Greece. These electives are Marketing of Marine Services and Risk Management. However, if a student prefers any of the other elective modules, they can be taken but that would require attendance in London.

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a special project of 12,000 words.

Teaching and learning

This multidisciplinary programme is designed to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills required to take up the exciting job opportunities arising from the recent adoption of marine spatial planning and related developments in marine conservation and the maritime industries.

Marine spatial planning is now developing as a key component of marine management. It aims to deliver a more organised sharing of sea space between demands as diverse as nature conservation, tourism, ports and shipping, renewable energy, fishing, aquaculture and mineral extraction. It seeks to integrate social, economic and environmental uses of the coast and sea.

Marine planning is being taken up by coastal nations around the world, including Australia, China, the United States of America, South Africa and several European nations, such as Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, Poland, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Some nations, such as the UK, now have statutory provisions for planning their coastal and marine waters and bodies and procedures for preparing marine plans and implementing them. All European Union coastal states are now required to introduce marine planning, following a Directive passed in 2014.

So there is a growing demand for professionals who understand marine science and management on the one hand, and spatial planning, as has long been practised on land, on the other. This postgraduate programme bridges the gap between these two disciplines, and equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to embark on a career within marine management.
This programme leads to the award of a Master of Science degree. It is a full-time, one-year course, though it is also possible to study part-time over two years, combining studies with other responsibilities. With the growing demand of a global population, levels of international trade have dramatically increased over the last four decades. In the UK alone, this translates to a contribution of around £31 billion for the UK economy and the maritime industry is responsible for one in every 50 jobs. With the world shipping fleet growing at just under four per cent per year and anticipated annual growth in seaborne trade demand currently sitting at three-four per cent, the employment opportunities within the maritime sector look set to expand.

Shipping managers in the current marketplace need to understand all aspects of international supply chain management. As the shipping industry evolves towards an integrated, multimodal, door-to-door logistics approach, such knowledge becomes increasingly important.

Southampton Solent’s intellectually challenging international shipping and logistics master’s degree is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge sought after by employers within this dynamic industry. The units studied during the course aim to enable students to develop a detailed understanding of the operations and strategies of shipping as a single transport mode within the context of international multimodal logistics.

Taught by a highly skilled team with wide-ranging experience in the maritime industry, the course has been designed in conjunction with key maritime industry organisations to enable students to graduate with the necessary knowledge and work-based skills that will enhance their career prospects.

Delivery

Course details

Period 1 — an intensive 15 week programme of classroom learning and field activities prepare you for the technical aspects of surveying and the research required in master’s study. 70 per cent lectures/seminars and 30 per cent practical, either within the laboratory or afloat. Assessment is continual or by coursework.

Period 2 — includes specialisms in advanced studies with a combination of the digital mapping and survey project management modules, designed to prepare students for practical roles and management decisions when completing hydrographic tasks on behalf of future employers. Modules are selected based on industrial expectations and potential career requirements. 80 per cent lectures/seminars, 20 per cent practical. Assessment is 50/50 coursework and formal examination for core modules, continuous for the one optional module.

Period 3 — undertake a self-managed final dissertation, supervised by an assigned academic. May comprise a desk study, laboratory experimentation, field observations, data acquisitions and processing.

Postgraduate community

The postgraduate programmes in Sustainable Development have been growing very rapidly. The original MSc programme started with nine students in the 2009-2010 academic year and currently 30 students are registered. On this programme you attend an average number of 24 lectures lasting for three hours each in Semester 1 and an additional 15 lectures in Semester 2. There are also a number of tutorials, seminar presentations, student-led workshops, as well as field trips and away days. There is also a dissertation conference where you can present your research findings before you submit your dissertation.

The double MSc in Sustainable Energy takes place in both St Andrews and Moscow. The first year involves taking similar modules in the one-year programme at St Andrews with a more specific focus on energy issues. The second year challenges students to complete study abroad on a wide range of energy modules.

Sustainable Development students are extremely well catered for in several aspects. Firstly, you have the use of a dedicated postgraduate space in the Observatory. There are ports for physical laptop internet access. The room is also served by high speed WiFi connections. You have access to the room on a 24/7 basis. It offers a location for group or individual work, classes, events, receptions and even relaxation. The building is primarily for the use of Sustainable Development postgraduate students. Secondly, you have a close relationship with staff on the course. Class sizes are limited to provide a one-to-one service for students. Through working on practical projects with different community groups, the initiative helps communities minimise their impact on the planet, become more self-sustaining, and strengthens community ties. The International Master of Business Administration (IMBA) is a double degree master program of the International Business School Alliance (IBSA). Upon completion of the one-year program you will receive degrees from two different partner-universities in two countries of your choice.

You may either start your first term in Bremen, Germany choosing the core modules of our full-time master's course and acquire the basics of an MBA. All core modules are of the same excellent quality at every IBSA-partner university.

Or you decide for our specialization in the second and third term and get a sound and deep knowledge of International Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Bremen's location is tailor-made for this specialization and many international logistic companies are situated here. Bremerhaven, the seaport of the free city-state of Bremen, is one of the largest European ports. IBSA Double Degree Master

Courses are offered under the auspices of the International Business School Alliance (IBSA). The IBSA program offers a set of core modules in term one, followed by a term two specialization consisting of 4-6 modules and a final research project.

Term one provided students with core modules worth 60 UK or 30 ECTS or 12 SH credits, setting the context of the broader field of global business and management.

Term two provides the specialization modules, also worth 60 UK or 30 ECTS or 12 SH credits.

In term three the final research project worth a further 60 UK or 30 ECTS credits or 12 SH is related to the chosen specialist business function.

Students start with the first term at any of the 5 partner universities belonging to the International Business School Alliance (IBSA) and have to change to a second IBSA-partner in the second term. The final research project in the third term is completed at this second IBSA-partner.

After completing the whole program successfully, students receive a degree from both universities, at which they have studied.

IMBA - International Master of Business Administration - is a new form of international business education. We educate future managers to enter their job as well trained as possible.

IMBA is a one-year full-time fee-paying master program offered at the International Graduate Center of the Hochschule Bremen University of Applied Sciences.

Interrogating Sustainable Development – This module will introduce you to, or develop your knowledge across, areas such as the history and genesis of sustainable development, an understanding of earth systems science, the social and economic systems that shape humanity and impact on the environment, and an understanding of how these systems interact.

Quantitative Research Methods in Social Sciences – This module will introduce you to various quantitative and statistical approaches used to analyse social processes and phenomena and how to apply these in sustainable development.

Students gain the skills necessary to incorporate the concepts of sustainable development in all stages of an engineering project's development, together with a systematic understanding of the causes, motivations and means of personal travel and goods movement, and techniques for analysing transport problems and evaluating projects, plans and policies.

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a special project of 12,000 words.

Teaching and Learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, computer-based work and coursework. Assessment is through unseen written examinations, coursework, an individual literature review, presentations and the dissertation focussing on the final project.

Careers

Transport graduates find employment with transport operators, consultancies, local and central governments in various countries, and in supranational organisations. Many graduates are employed by companies involved in the manufacture of instrumentation, and in companies specialising in software and other services for the engineering industry.

- Employability
Successful completion of this MSc meets the academic requirements for corporate membership of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. The programme is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation. The programme is also accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers as meeting the regulations of the Engineering Council's scheme for enabling graduates without an accredited Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering to be considered for corporate membership and registration.
