The industry-relevant Maritime Operations Management Masters programme is designed to meet the changing needs of the global maritime industry.

You’ll gain the tools to manage ports, shipping operations, maritime law, and maritime safety. When you graduate you’ll have the skills you need to secure positions at the highest level within this competitive worldwide industry.

This programme covers the essential critical awareness of business, financial and management strategies, including markets, customers, finance, people, operations and ICT. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, you’ll learn how to find solutions to marine operations management problems.

You’ll also conduct research, using research design, data collection, analysis, synthesis and reporting techniques to develop systems and outcomes.

Industrial visits are an important part of the course in order to understand developments in the market and typically include: ports, ship visits, insurance underwriters (usually in London), P&I Club and the IMO.

Who is it for?

The course is designed for people who wish to make a career in the marine and offshore industries and who have either developed some experience in industry, maritime or otherwise, or have a sound academic basis or skills upon which to build.

During the course, in addition to gaining an understanding of the underlying principles upon which the industry is based, students will also gain confidence in the interpersonal and international cultural skills which are essential to senior roles in the maritime industries.

Objectives

The Maritime Operations and Management course is designed for existing professionals serving in the industry as well as those looking for a career within the maritime, offshore and sea transport industries. For those already within the industry applicants are likely to have a responsible sea-going or middle-management position. Alternatively, new entrants to the industry are likely to have attained a first degree in a related technical or management subject.

This modular course is focused towards giving students the necessary knowledge and skills to help them achieve high levels in their careers in the maritime and offshore industries. Indeed, many former students on this course have now reached board level appointments in their various companies.

Placements

Students may undertake short placements of normally one to two weeks, if they wish. These are normally undertaken at the IMO or with shipping and insurance companies.

This activity does give the student some further understanding of the industry, if they have no previous industry experience.

Teaching and learning

The course is taught by 12 lecturers who come from academia and industry. These are supported by around six guest lecturers from various parts of the marine industry.

During the year students make visits to IMO and port facilities as well as other organisations.

Assessment

Each subject has coursework associated with it and this normally comprises two essays which probe the student's abilities for critical analysis. Examinations are held twice per year with three subjects examined in January and the remainder in May. To pass, the student must gain 50% in each of the coursework and examination elements.

The project is a major piece of work which results in a dissertation on a chosen subject. This is examined by the dissertation content and viva-voce examination.

Modules

The Maritime Operations and Management course comprises eight taught modules: six compulsory and two elective to suit the student's needs and future career aspirations. Outside of the block taught module students are expected to read around the subjects developed in the lectures, undertake coursework and prepare for examinations in the compulsory subjects.

Completion of modules and examinations will lead to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma. Alternatively, if in addition, a project followed by a dissertation is undertaken by a student, this will lead to the award of a Master's degree.

Full-time students can expect to study for around 37 hours per week.

The course is designed to lead graduates into a variety of career paths, depending upon their interests, within the marine industry. When they reach the higher echelons of organisations, then the all-embracing nature of the studies in this course help them to take wide management perspectives of problems facing their companies or organisations.

It is anticipated that students upon graduating will find employment within the maritime industries, with some even offered jobs prior to graduation. These employment opportunities are either in the middle or higher management areas. For those with little prior experience in the industry, passing out from the course will place them on paths leading towards employment at higher levels within the industry.

Period 1 — an intensive 15 week programme of classroom learning and field activities prepare you for the technical aspects of surveying and the research required in master’s study. 70 per cent lectures/seminars and 30 per cent practical, either within the laboratory or afloat. Assessment is continual or by coursework.

Period 2 — includes specialisms in advanced studies with a combination of the digital mapping and survey project management modules, designed to prepare students for practical roles and management decisions when completing hydrographic tasks on behalf of future employers. Modules are selected based on industrial expectations and potential career requirements. 80 per cent lectures/seminars, 20 per cent practical. Assessment is 50/50 coursework and formal examination for core modules, continuous for the one optional module.

Period 3 — undertake a self-managed final dissertation, supervised by an assigned academic. May comprise a desk study, laboratory experimentation, field observations, data acquisitions and processing.

Fieldwork

The Stackpole residential field course introduces students taking the “Principles of Environmental Dynamics” to some of the major themes of the module: environmental systems, sea-level change and human impact on the environment, in a congenial setting in Pembrokeshire. The environmental issues facing the Stackpole Estate are discussed and placed into a historical perspective through lectures and the analysis of long term environmental records.

The Department of Geography is well-resourced to support research: there are two dedicated computer laboratories: One of 24 computers in conjunction with Library and Information Services (LIS) providing general IT software and programmes dedicated to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing; One of 10 high-performance Linux workstations delivering software tools for advanced GIS and remote sensing applications.

We have specialist laboratory suites for: stable-isotope ratio analysis; tree ring analysis; extraction and identification of organic compounds; pollen extraction and analysis; rainfall simulation; tephra analysis; soil and sediment characterisation.

In addition, we have recently spent £1.8million on state-of-the-art teaching spaces, including IT facilities, laboratories and flexible teaching spaces.

The Eighteenth-Century Worlds pathw will take you on an investigative journey through the history, literature and visual and material culture of Europe and its interactions with the wider world, from the Atlantic to Asia.

This highly original interdisciplinary postgraduate course gives you the opportunity to study in one of Britain’s leading Atlantic ports; a city rich in eighteenth-century history, architecture and culture.

Researching the subject is a real pleasure in Liverpool. The city is home to more national museums and galleries than any other English city outside of London.

The expertise of our research-active tutors and the combination of modules makes this a unique course, following the trajectory to a global world during the eighteenth century.

ERASMUS Exchange with Paris Diderot

There is an opportunity for students to spend semester 2 studying at the University of Paris-Diderot, taking modules there while preparing their feasibility study. Further details will be available in due course. For students who do not choose to go abroad, the course is enhanced by the presence of a visiting lecturer from Paris in each academic year.

Eighteenth-Century Worlds Research Centre

All MA students are encouraged to take part in the activities of the Centre. These include research seminars with invited speakers and workshops and conferences, some designed specifically for postgraduates. Watch this space!

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The MA programme has as its core one interdisciplinary module in each semester . These modules are team-taught by staff with expertise in British and Continental European literary, cultural and historical studies (including colonial and postcolonial studies) and in Classics. They are designed to introduce postgraduates to the range of disciplines covered by the MA, while raising awareness of methodological and theoretical concerns and some of the key themes in eighteenth-century studies. The other compulsory elements are a module on research methods, the Feasibility Study and the Dissertation. The choice of dissertation topic is up to the student, and the Feasibility Study and Dissertation can be supervised by staff from any of the participating Departments (History; English; Cultures, Languages and Area Studies; Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology).

All studies are co-ordinated by the Eighteenth-Century Worlds Centre at the University of Liverpool. The two core modules are worth 30 credits each, while the research methods module and Feasibility Study are both worth 15 credits. I. In addition to the compulsory modules, students select one 15-credit option in each semester from modules in English literature and the reception of classical antiquity. Over the summer students complete the 15,000-word dissertation which constitutes the final 60 credits of the MA programme.

This multidisciplinary programme is designed to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills required to take up the exciting job opportunities arising from the recent adoption of marine spatial planning and related developments in marine conservation and the maritime industries.

Marine spatial planning is now developing as a key component of marine management. It aims to deliver a more organised sharing of sea space between demands as diverse as nature conservation, tourism, ports and shipping, renewable energy, fishing, aquaculture and mineral extraction. It seeks to integrate social, economic and environmental uses of the coast and sea.

Marine planning is being taken up by coastal nations around the world, including Australia, China, the United States of America, South Africa and several European nations, such as Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, Poland, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Some nations, such as the UK, now have statutory provisions for planning their coastal and marine waters and bodies and procedures for preparing marine plans and implementing them. All European Union coastal states are now required to introduce marine planning, following a Directive passed in 2014.

So there is a growing demand for professionals who understand marine science and management on the one hand, and spatial planning, as has long been practised on land, on the other. This postgraduate programme bridges the gap between these two disciplines, and equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to embark on a career within marine management.
This programme leads to the award of a Master of Science degree. It is a full-time, one-year course, though it is also possible to study part-time over two years, combining studies with other responsibilities. This is the first programme of its kind to be accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute as a specialist Masters course. Gaining the degree is a step towards professional membership of the Institute.
