During the course you will develop expertise in a range of specialised areas such as trading strategies, portfolio and fund management, alternative and responsible investments, ethics in investment management and risk management, among others. Integral to the academic course is the parallel study of the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA® ) programme, level 1. The tuition for this programme includes the candidate’s registration in the June CFA Level I exam that is written just after the end of the academic year. The tuition also includes substantial CFA teaching outside of the academic teaching.

The ICMA Centre is a CFA University Affiliate; this is in recognition that this degree covers at least 70% of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge, the CFA Institute Ethical and Professional Standards, and other requirements.

You will complete a total of five units (including your dissertation) involving attendance of six or eight days for each unit. You will study several key topics covering areas of project management theory and methods, while gaining an insight into their practical application in a business context.

Here are the units you will study:

Project Environment and Planning: You will develop an understanding of the relationship between project and business management, as well as the project management environment and the factors that influence project outcomes. Strategic aspects of projects are addressed, including project selection and portfolio design. You will also learn how project managers must understand the benefits to be delivered by projects, the requirements of stakeholders and how to work within the constraints of cost, time and quality. Estimation methods and planning techniques are taught together with quality management. Approaches to the planning and control of projects that have been developed in different sectors are also covered, including agile methods and fast tracking.

Budgets and Commercial Management: This unit introduces you to raising project finance, building, monitoring and controlling project budgets and measuring Earned Value of project deliverables. It also covers the commercial aspects of procurement including tendering, contracting and the skills and practices of contract and bid negotiation, providing you with the tools and techniques for managing project budgets. The units also examines the key roles that project managers, budget managers and key project personnel play in managing project budgets.

People Management and Risk: This unit develops a critical understanding of individual, team and organisational working in order to deliver project goals successfully. It covers how individual characteristics such as personality, intelligence, ability and skills, motivation and attitudes affect individual performance. You will learn how to empower individuals and teams to achieve quality standards which enhance personal team and organisational performance, together with the development of creative and credible leadership. It also examines the key challenges in the application of risk management frameworks and models in project management, crisis management and corporate governance. Risk management strategies and the development of effective project mitigation and contingency action plans are critically evaluated.

Project Investigation and Systems Methods: This unit explores the investigation of project issues through the use of a structured research methodology and project management analysis tools to enhance the research process. Wider strategic issues are explored to place the research process into context and to illustrate how appropriate research methods can be identified for specific types of research problems. You will also look at tools for the modelling and analysis of complex problem situations (including systems thinking, soft systems methods and influence diagrams) and how these can be used to diagnose problem situations to identify relevant areas for further investigation. Project management methodologies including PRINCE2, Partnering and Programme Management as a wider context for project management research issues are examined. You will produce a research proposal that brings together the use of research methodology and project systems in identifying, justifying and investigating a research question that will feed into the research conducted in your final dissertation.

Dissertation: This unit enables you to deepen your understanding of an aspect of project management of your own choice. Many students choose to investigate topics which they intend to focus on in the next stage of their career. The unit is structured as a research project so you can demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research on a specific project management issue and effectively communicate your findings in an appropriate manner for a Master’s degree.

Programme Assessment

The units are structured as eight teaching blocks of three days of lectures, seminars and interactive syndicate work, with periods of self-managed study between blocks. Each of these will be assessed by coursework assignments. You will also produce a dissertation with guidance from a supervisor. The dissertation is structured as an independent research project to deepen your understanding of a chosen aspect of project management. The course will be delivered through a mixture of lectures, group work, practical sessions and distance learning via the Moodle Virtual Learning Environment.

Postgraduate programme within the School operate on a semesterised basis with 140 credits of taught modules being delivered over two teaching semesters.

Modules are led by experienced members of staff and, in some instances, professional practitioners from industry and for each 20 credit module students will normally have:
48 hours of face to face contact and 152 hours of self –managed (tutor directed) learning.

We are a Registered Education Provider – Global Provider – with the Project Management Institute (PMI) the largest project Management professional body in the world. Students will have the opportunity to attend PMI meetings and events locally and nationally and to develop their own personal professional networks and contacts. We also work closely with Agile South Wales who encourage professional contact at events and have input to course teaching.

A variety of assessment methods are used including individual coursework, presentations, group practical assessment and debates. Course summary

This specialist pathway will enable you to engage in a critical dialogue about the strategic importance of human resource management (HRM) in international firms, and gain insights into contemporary issues in HRM, such as diversity management, talent management and E-HRM. You will be taught by staff from both research and practice backgrounds.

The business context for managing human resources has changed significantly in recent years due to economic, political, social and technological forces. Competition in global business has led to significant interest and research into which HRM policies and practices lead to enhanced organisational performance. Another area of strategic focus for HRM, within multinational companies in particular, is the ease and speed at which knowledge can be developed and disseminated.

This course will provide you with internationally applicable business skills, particularly in HRM, which have become essential for business leaders in the current market. You will develop your analytical skills, creativity and independent thinking about the way in which HRM can shape organisational performance in the context of continuous change and the globalisation of business.

This course will develop your skills and knowledge in international business across a range of areas including finance, and prepare you for work in an international organisation. 

Content

During this course you will develop your understanding of the theory and practice of different research methods, both quantitative and qualitative, in business. You will learn to assess how the external business environment will affect your business, and develop strategies for responding to this.

You will complete an investment portfolio exercise which will help to develop your knowledge of international finance, and an insight into the challenges facing bankers, policy makers, regulators and investors in financial markets.

The business environment is very much international these days, which makes global and inter cultural working a reality. Businesses need to be effective at managing people from an international perspective, during this course you will look at organisation behaviour and human resources management with a focus on the continuous change and the increasing globalisation of business and management practice.

You will also examine what it means to be a human resource professional, and the contribution that this area makes to organisational performance. You will also develop a critical perspective on contemporary human resources management within global business.

As an MSc student, you will be required to complete a dissertation which will allow you to apply all the understanding, knowledge, analytical and conceptual tools that you have gained from your modules.

Students will also have the option to take a module of their choice which might focus on ethics, managing a diverse workforce or project management.

What you will study

The course structure for the MSc Project Management consists of a number of core modules in addition to a dissertation or business research project.

- Accounting and Financial Control (20 credits)
- Legislative and Professional Issues (20 credits)

- Dissertation (60 credits) - The dissertation or business research project will involve extensive independent research into a relevant topic within project, programme and portfolio management, allowing you to apply and reflect on your skills and knowledge in the subject area.

APMP Project Management Qualification (Level 7)

Students on the MSc Project Management have the option to compliment their studies by undertaking the five day Level 7 APMP Project Management Qualification at the University for a reduced fee.

Learning and Assessment methods

Students will attend a combination of taught lectures and tutorials. A mix of assessment methods are used, including individual essays and reports, group projects and reports, presentations, seminars and an individual dissertation or project.

MSc Project Management (Exemption route)

If you can demonstrate extensive practitioner experience in managing and delivering projects coupled with the APMP level 7 qualification, you may be able to study the exemption route for this course.

Eligible students will be required to complete the Managing Projects and Programmes and Research Methods modules, plus a dissertation or business research project in order to gain the full Masters qualification.
