Course Overview

The PGCE Secondary Design and Technology Programme at Swansea is a supportive, well organised, carefully structured course which places much emphasis on the use of design and its application to the world of technology.

The course also develops skills in CAD and CAM as well as other forms of graphic communication and uses creativity to develop and plan effective learning resources for teaching at secondary level.

In order to develop a range of skills across all focus areas of Design and Technology, projects will be set which include working with textiles, wood, plastics and metal. Health and Safety training is also an important feature of the course. Training in safe working practice with machinery in the workshop is a key part of the course, whatever the specialism, and students also have the opportunity to undertake a basic food hygiene course.

If Welsh is your first language, you will be able to undertake teaching experience placements in Welsh medium schools, receive session handouts through the medium of Welsh, have tutorials in Welsh, and receive Subject Mentor lesson observations and feedback in Welsh.

The course works closely with outside agencies such as the Glynn Vivian Gallery, the National Museum Wales, Artes Mundi, the Saatchi Gallery, Tate Modern and Plantasia Tropical Planthouse. You will also have the opportunity to work as an Artist-In-Residence or gain teaching experience in a museum or gallery for a two week period at the end of the programme to increase your employability.

What Will You Study?

The course is split into 3 stages: The Postgraduate Certificate, the Postgraduate Diploma and the Master of Arts Degree.
You can study for either a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits), a Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) or Master of Arts Degree (180 credits) - with the option to progress to the next stages from the certificate and diploma levels.

You will discover and disclose the influences that feed into your creative practice and draw inspiration from particular sources. You have chance to deepen your understanding of these influences and evaluate your responses to them.

We also include a research orientated module, to teach you systems and methods of researching in order that you can grow in confidence as your knowledge becomes increasingly specialised and your opinions more informed by your findings.

You will also learn how to audit our own skills as a “creative”, and to use that experience to develop a project tailored to your individual needs and career aspiration.

If you undertake the full Master of Arts, you will consider a major project that can be expressed in words and visuals. Normally, Master of Arts students submit a short dissertation relating to their practical work, or a word based activity equivalent to a dissertation in its depth of enquiry and reasoning. The resulting practical work is exhibited at the conclusion of the programme.

Major assessments are positioned at the end of each module, with formative assessment around the mid way point. Assessments are inclusive and all students are encouraged to engage with their assessors and justify the creative decisions leading to their works. We try to make assessments an important part of learning but not intimidating. We encourage and reward creative energy.

The information listed in this section is an overview of the academic content of the programme that will take the form of either core or option modules. Modules are designated as core or option in accordance with professional body requirements and internal academic framework review, so may be subject to change.

Assessment and Teaching

The majority of assessment is based upon the portfolio of work produced within a module. Students are given opportunity to present this body of work and discuss the context in which it was produced and how it may inform future practice.

The ability to express ideas and to reflect upon practice is measured in short reports and evaluations, either written or presented to peers.

Typical teaching weeks include contact sessions between 10.00 and 17.00 on Mondays and Thursdays. The facilities are normally available from 8.00 to 20.30 Monday to Thursday and 8.00 to 17.30 on Friday in term time.

The access requirements are equivalent to those provided by the general educational objectives of all three-year university degree in classes of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Information Engineering, and Industrial Engineering. The subject looks at innovative concepts for sustainable rail transport with a particular focus on system services, production patterns and rail system designs.

Animal Welfare is a very broad and applied field and the programme aims to provide coverage of all the different aspects of the topic which are often treated separately. Science is an essential skill in order to have a good understanding of welfare but we appreciate that applicants may come from diverse backgrounds and therefore the course includes a rigorous training in science communication, experimental design, data analysis and interpretation. The programme also includes teaching by practitioners and visits to organisations with first-hand experience of applied welfare problems. The programme also attempts to cover the entire spectrum of animal welfare, including zoos, farms, laboratory animals and wildlife.

Career prospects

Students are exposed to potential work places and can make valuable contacts with professionals in the welfare community. Where possible this is a two-way exchange in which communities are offered help with any issues they have and for which assistance may be provided in finding a solution (e.g. through independent research projects, supervised by university staff). This is also an option open to other courses and could benefit the students in the long-term as well as give the university valuable connections with the wider community.

Module Details

Supply chain management is a philosophy, the implementation process and the control of this process through which different entities within a supply chain aim to streamline their activities to improve the overall effectiveness and efficiency of meeting final customer requirements. A variety of different techniques will be investigated, ranging from conceptual frameworks, analytical approaches, to computer-based models.

Here are the units you will study:

Supply Chain Management: This unit enable you to develop advanced skills so that you can deal with problems of supply chain management across different products, locations, and companies. The types of problems studied in this course are encountered in industry (e.g. retail, discrete or continuous production and logistics service providers) as well as in service organisations (e.g. banks, hospitals and law firms). Managers dealing with such problems are known under various titles, including production, operations, supply (chain), inventory, purchasing, distribution or logistics managers.

Logistics Modelling: Most problems arising in the fields of logistics and supply chain management have sufficient complexity and detail that they require the use of sophisticated modelling techniques. This unit looks at two of the most commonly used methodologies for modelling and solving logistics problems: simulation and heuristic techniques. In both cases a computer package is used to assist solution. The techniques will be demonstrated with a range of case studies drawn from the field of logistics including transportation, supply chain configuration and management, warehouse design and layout, container port layout, production planning and vehicle routing.

Operations Management: This unit teaches operations management techniques that are relevant to logistics. The commonly used techniques of linear and integer programming will be taught using Microsoft Excel based methods for solution. You will look at case studies covering production planning, transportation, logistics planning and supply chain configuration. You will also be taught about locating facilities such as factories, distribution centres, cross docking centres and retail outlets. The effective scheduling of labour force and machines will be demonstrated, and current state-of-the art production planning models will be covered.

Strategic Logistics: This unit looks at the field of logistics from a strategic point of view. A number of quantitative techniques for strategic decision making such as decision analysis, multi-criteria decision analysis, data envelopment analysis and queuing theory are introduced in the context of logistics applications. The topic of strategic decisions in transportation modelling is then covered. The unit is completed by the analysis of a number of case studies relating to different applications of logistics with respect to financial, environmental, societal and economic objectives.

Project (Masters Logistics): This unit allows you to conduct research into a larger scale or challenging logistics problem. The project may be practical or theoretical and may arise either from the supervisor's research interests or from your own desire to study a particular topic or situation. Typical areas of logistics in which the project will be conducted include (but are not limited to) transportation, supply chain configuration and management, warehouse design and layout, container port layout, production planning, green logistics, facility location and vehicle routing.

What Will You Study?

The curriculum is split into 3 stages: The Postgraduate Certificate, the Postgraduate Diploma and the Master of Arts Degree. The Certificate and Diploma comprise Part 1 of the programme and the Master’s Stage is Part 2.

Part 1 comprises three 40 credit modules in which you will discover and disclose the influences that feed into your creative practice – for some it is artworks, for others it may be writing or music – we all draw inspiration from particular sources. You have chance to deepen your understanding of these influences and evaluate your responses to them.

We also include a research orientated module, to teach you systems and methods of researching in order that you can grow in confidence as your knowledge becomes increasingly specialised and your opinions more informed by your findings.

Finally in Part 1 of the programme, we demonstrate how to audit our own skills as “creatives”, and to use that experience to develop a project tailored to your individual needs and career aspiration.

In Part 2, you will consolidate your researches and nominate a project that can be expressed in two forms; words and visuals. Normally, Master of Arts students submit a short dissertation relating to their practical work, or a word based activity equivalent to a dissertation in its depth of enquiry and reasoning. The resulting practical work is exhibited at the conclusion of the programme.

Major assessments are positioned at the end of each module, with formative assessment around the mid way point. Assessments are inclusive and all students are encouraged to engage with their assessors and justify the creative decisions leading to their works. We try to make assessments an important part of learning but not intimidating. We encourage and reward creative energy.

Assessment and Teaching

The majority of assessment is based upon the portfolio of work produced within a module. Students are given opportunity to present this body of work and discuss the context in which it was produced and how it may inform future practice.

The ability to express ideas and to reflect upon practice is measured in short reports and evaluations, either written or presented to peers.

Typical teaching weeks include contact sessions between 10.00 and 17.00 on Mondays and Thursdays. The facilities are normally available from 8.00 to 20.30 Monday to Thursday and 8.00 to 17.30 on Friday in term time.

The PGCE PCET is aimed at graduates who want to teach in their degree subject or graduates with a further qualification in the subject area in which they aim to teach. They will also be teaching or actively seeking teaching in the post-compulsory sector of education and training. Students do not need GCSE Maths or English to apply for this course.

The PCE PCET is aimed at students with a Level 3 qualification (NVQ3, OCN 3, A Level equivalence) preferably in the subject they are teaching or want to teach. The programme is for students who have experience in their subject areas and who wish to further their experience by teaching in the PCET or lifelong learning sector. Students do not need GCSE Maths or English to apply for this course.

Graduate and non-graduate entrants will follow the same learning pattern but, in compliance with the requirements of QAA, be taught at the differentiated levels for undergraduate study in Year 2.

- Prepare to Teach
The Preparing to teach 10 week taster course is for students with a Level 3 qualification who do not wish to undertake a two-year programme of study but who want to teach. Course Content

The Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET) sector is an area of growing importance in a world of rapidly evolving economic and social change. As individuals face the need to upgrade their skills in order to meet the requires on the world of work, educators in the Post 16 sector have a key role to play in helping them to achieve their learning goals

The Cardiff Met PCET programmes have been devised to introduce you to teaching in the post compulsory education and training (PCET) sector including tertiary, further and higher education, adult and community education, vocational and 14- 19 education as well as training in the private sector or work-based learning environments. These two-year part time programmes will engage you in both academic and practical assignments.

The ethos of the programme is predicated upon student-centred learning which includes the interchange ability of staff/student roles, the pooling of intellectual resources and experiences and the structured opportunities for skills-sharing.

The general aim of the programmes is to produce teachers or trainers who can demonstrate competence across the range of roles and tasks related to the design, delivery, management and evaluation of learning. Students will leave the programme equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge that underpin the performance of those tasks expected of the professional educator or trainer in the post-compulsory sector.

The programme aims to provide a high quality and professionally appropriate experience that offers the opportunity for students to develop their abilities to plan and undertake projects related to practice; further to link their practice to theory in a critical and evaluative way. It aims to equip students with the skills to engage with the concept of reflective practice and to select areas of professional relevance for their study.

Learning & Teaching

The programme team recognises that adult learners bring with them experiences which can be used as a resource for learning. Consequently formal lectures are not a feature of this programme. We expect all sessions to involve students actively participating in their learning.

The overall emphasis will be on working together and effectively utilising the experiences and skills that the individual learners bring to the group. This student-centred approach allows students to take responsibility for their own learning. Tutors are seen as facilitators of learning, providing resources, supporting, stimulating and challenging where appropriate.

To this end the teaching methods on the programme will include:

Input from tutors. These can be useful in providing new or up-to-date information to larger groups provided there is an ongoing opportunity for questioning and participation. They will be used sparingly on the programme to generate interest in new subjects and provide information for future discussion, analysis and evaluation.

Small group work. This will be one of the key strategies utilised. The major aim of these activities will be to develop skills relating to thinking, discussion and the presentation of information. Students will be able to practise their communication skills, listen to other group members, support weaker peers and observe group dynamics in action. They will have extensive opportunities to develop their presentation skills in a safe environment and learn how to give encouraging and constructive feedback to their colleagues. Methods utilised will include:

- Buzz groups and brainstorming

- Role plays

Seminars. These will be led by programme members and will allow them to further develop their presentation and delivery skills. They will be designed to allow group members to explore issues relating to their own institutional settings or their academic specialisms.

Individualised learning periods. Directed self-study allowing programme members to learn at their own pace outside the framework of class activities. The number of hours of self-study varies for each student and it would be worth discussing this with your personal tutor at the start of the year.

Tutorials. Group members will meet with their individual tutors at regular intervals to reflect on their learning experiences, share concerns and problems and set learning targets.

Moodle is Cardiff Met’s virtual learning environment and you will be able to use this to access materials/information relating to the programme from a networked PC. Moodle will also be used for academic and social online discussion forum, blog discussions and for online learning resources.

Assessment

You may be assessed by a combination of assessment methods appropriate to the PGCE and PCE programme levels and may include:
- Written assessments (WRIT) such as reports, self-reflections, analytical documents, case studies, online blogs, peer assessments, essays;

- Presentations (PRES) and Microteaching sessions which may be individual and/or group; seminar; (non)-interactive; with audience;

- Practicals (PRAC) such as individual and/or group; coaching; mentoring;; performance;

- Portfolio (PORT) that includes a collection of evidence, frequently including a contextual statement; poster; website;

- Placements (PLAC) such as a fieldwork placement; school placement; experiencing the world of work.

The programme is continually assessed through module assignments and two hundred hours of supervised teaching experience to include 130 hours of direct teaching over the two years.

Students will undertake four observed teaching hours in Year 1 and four in Year 2. Each of these will require written preparation and also a self-evaluation report following the observation.

Employability & Careers

The PGCE and PCE PCET will qualify you to teach in Further and Higher Education, youth, adult and community education, 14- 19 sector, work-based education, training in HMForces, prison, industry and commercial training departments.

Students who have completed this course have gone on to part or full-time teaching in the post compulsory sector of education and training, usually teaching their subject and other subject related areas. All graduates leaving the course are signposted to Cardiff County Council and Cardiff Met’s Widening Access department as potential adult education tutors for outreach and summer school activities. .Some students are offered teaching opportunities by their mentor once they have graduated.

​Progression Routes:
Non-graduates successfully completing the PCE (PCET) will gain 120 credits at levels 4 and 5. Students would be able to progress on to a degree programme in their specific subject discipline.

Graduates completing the PGCE (PCET) will gain 120 credits at levels 4, 5 and 6. Students can then progress onto Masters programmes within their particular subject area.

Delivered in a creative mix of university and school based modules, students gain a deep and broad knowledge of learning and teaching across the primary age range.

Course Overview

We are proud of our long tradition of training students to become high quality practitioners, and we seek to recruit high quality, committed students who are keen to make a positive difference to the educational experiences of primary school children.The South West Wales Centre of Teacher Education (SWWCTE) is part of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

The Primary PGCE programmes (General Primary (Lower) and General Primary (Upper)) are designed to prepare students for a career in teaching.

The PGCE is a full-time, intensive vocational programme, suitable for those wishing to train to teach, inspire and enthuse primary aged children, helping them to make excellent progress in learning. The course offers rich opportunities for personal development, as students embark upon the first stages of a career which is challenging, fulfilling and rewarding.

The sessions both in school and at the University are intended to involve students in a range of experiences, which are carefully planned to increase understanding of learning and teaching across the Primary curriculum. There is a focus on developing personal reflective skills, and in engaging with current educational research in order to develop students as knowledgeable and effective practitioners.

The university element adopts a modular structure and teaching takes a blended learning approach including lead lectures, group seminars, tutorials, independent study and directed activities using the virtual learning environment (moodle).

Professional Teaching Experiences take place in a variety of educational contexts. Students build confidence and expertise, culminating in taking responsibility for planning, teaching and assessing a class of children in their chosen phase for a sustained period of time.

In our most recent inspection, Estyn (the Welsh educational inspectorate) praised the Centre’s innovative use of teaching approaches such as Problem-based learning, which forms a core element of the professional studies module.

Key Features

The primary PGCE programme at Swansea sets high expectations of its students and is run jointly between the University and partnership schools across the South Wales region. Programme tutors are knowledgeable and skilful qualified teachers. They possess a wide range of experience and expertise in key curriculum areas and other fields such as literacy, numeracy, ICT, inclusion, Welsh medium studies, humanities, early years, performing arts, bilingualism, PE, RE, thinking skills and more!

Tutors provide excellent pastoral and academic support to ensure that students receive the individual guidance and challenge required to make excellent progress.

During the Programme students study a breadth of subjects, areas of learning and professional matters.

Assessment

In order to complete the programme successfully and meet national standards, students must pass both the practical teaching and written elements of the programme. Practical teaching competence will be assessed by teachers in schools, in conjunction with the university tutor.

University assessments currently include essays, portfolio tasks, presentations and research reports. The programme currently offers 40 level 7 credits at Masters level.

We seek to recruit students who are committed to developing their personal skills and knowledge throughout their studies. Students’ personal literacy and numeracy skills will be regularly audited and monitored throughout the programme. It is a requirement of Welsh Government that literacy skills are measured on exit and judged to be proficient for professional practice. Students complete an exit audit and submit a portfolio of evidence to meet this requirement. A pass grade is mandatory.

Many school and college departments, both locally and nationally, are staffed with several of our teachers and many of our trainees have gone on to forge successful teaching careers at strategic, professional and management levels at home and abroad.

Our PGCE graduates usually remain in close touch with us as they make their careers in the teaching profession and they often become Subject Mentors on the programme. This creates a very strong, sustainable professional network of teachers which is a rich source of continuing professional development.

Recently our PGCE Design and Technology graduates have gone on to work as Secondary teachers in many independent and state schools in Wales, England and abroad including (but not limited) to:
