The course’s variety of teaching and learning styles is reflected in the variety of assessment tools employed throughout the course. Within the general principle of mixed mode formative and summative assessment, we use a diversity of assessment instruments: a range of written assignments, such as essays, reports, portfolios, individual or group classroom presentations, and the dissertation.

The MPA dissertation is a 60 credit project that allows students to pursue individual research on a topic of their choice, within the public administration and public policy fields.

Detailed verbal and written feedback is given on all assessments, and significant tutorial support is given during the dissertation, including bespoke dissertation workshops.

Modular structure

The course consists of five taught modules, a work experience placement in a UK public service organisation (two days a week over 15 weeks), and a triple-module dissertation (which may be completed in your home country).

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

It incorporates 170 days placement experience as well as structured academic learning, including input from service users. A work based (part-time) route taking a minimum of three years, is available for employees who are sponsored by our partner agencies. The MA Social Work course will consist of 1800 hours structured academic learning and 170 days of learning in practice settings.

As part of the taught element of the course which is University- based students will experience a minimum of thirty skills development activity days. In Year 1 the focus is on generic skills which form the basis of an assessment of the student’s Readiness for Direct Practice and the development of capabilities at ‘end of first placement’ level. The Hydroinformatics and Water Management (Euro Aquae) MSc applies advanced information and communications technology to the management of water. You will foster a common international technical culture with students from all over the world, drawing upon the resources and expertise of universities across Europe.

The course offers a joint degree between five European universities as a part of the Erasmus + co-operation and mobility programme. Running since 2004, it is one of the most successful courses in this programme and in 2016 it was approved for a third term of funding. The partner universities are:

Newcastle University (UK)
University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis (France)
Brandenburg University of Technology at Cottbus (Germany)
Technical University of Catalonia (Spain)
Warsaw University of Technology (Poland)
You will receive quantitative training in hydrology, hydraulics and modern information communication technology (ICT) within the context of water management.

Delivery

You will study modules up to a total of 120 European Credits Transfer System (ECTS) credits, including 36 ECTS credits at a partner institution. Lectures and tutorials at partner institutions are taught in English. The course spans four semesters over two years:
Semester one - an introduction, bringing you and other students to a common level of ability in key technical areas. Studied at any partner university except Newcastle.

Semester two - the acquisition and use of hydroinformatic concepts, methods and tools. Studied at Newcastle

Semester three - thematic specialisation including: software engineering and modelling (Cottbus); groundwater management (Warsaw); decision support systems (Catalonia); and urban waters management (Nice). Studied at any partner university except Newcastle

Semester four - a research development project or professional practice in industry, available at all partner institutions

Accreditation

The course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) (comprising ICE, IStructE, CIHT and IHIE), as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for students with an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng Honours degree or Accredited IEng (Full) BEng/BSc Honours degree.

The course is also accredited by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).
