The course is designed and suitable for qualified podiatrists with clinical experience and an interest in sports medicine. It is a very practical course with multidisciplinary approach to patient management, so it should also appeal to those who simply want to enhance their clinical knowledge and expertise.

This programme is based on the philosophy that the total care for the athlete requires a multidisciplinary approach underpinned by evidenced based medicine.

Successful candidates will have the opportunity in the future, possibly as early as 2018, to sit a Fellowship examination in Podiatric Sports Medicine which will be awarded by The Directorate of Podiatric Medicine, College of Podiatry, London.

Students will have the opportunity to transfer from the PGCert to an MSc/PGDip in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

The programme is delivered by Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) within the William Harvey Research Institute and as such, will place the School at the forefront of provision of Podiatric Sports Medicine (PSM) within the UK. Working in sport is a largely practical discipline and the programme's emphasis lies firmly on regular clinical experience. Students will benefit from regular contact with members of Sports and Exercise Medicine at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), as well as visiting clinicians and lecturers who are experienced Sports Medicine specialists.

This course is designed to offer a mastery of foundation concepts and skills in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Lectures will be delivered by national and international experts; from cutting edge basic scientists to podiatric surgeons, sports physicians, physiotherapists and other health professionals working with world-class athletes. Our staff will work closely with students to nurture potential research interests and to develop clinical ability in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Course content covers detailed assessment and management of sports injuries of the lower limb, especially foot, ankle and lower leg with imaging in sports medicine to assist in supporting clinical diagnosis.

The PSM programme will offer a modular PGCert structure with an innovative practical component involving clinical shadowing and mentoring. Students will be exposed to unique clinical learning opportunities, such as the monthly inter-disciplinary combined clinic, that will challenge and sharpen diagnostic skills. An interactive and supportive clinician-student relationship will be a feature of clinics on the postgraduate programme.

COURSE AIMS:
-To provide a sound clinical base in Podiatric Sports Medicine on which to build future clinical practice with confidence in making a diagnosis and thinking beyond biomechanics.
-To facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the scientific basis which underlies the clinical practice of Podiatric Sports Medicine.
-To equip students with the key skills required in order for them to be able to critically analyse the literature and provide evidenced based interventions.
-To in future create a specialty in Podiatric Sports Medicine.

Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine
The Centre is ideally situated on the same campus as the sports injury, physiotherapy, podiatry and the interdisciplinary combined sports clinics. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to attend recognised external clinics around London, as well as the chance to attend sporting events and visits to national centres of excellence where possible.

Successful alumni have gone on to hold pivotal positions in sports medicine across the UK and internationally, including the Chief Medical Officer to the British Olympic Association and London 2012 and the Medical Director to the English Institute of Sport.

This innovative course will provide podiatrists with a theoretical underpinning of podiatric surgery and the opportunity to specialise in surgery.

Podiatric surgery has developed rapidly over the last 15 years as a post-registration professional development, and provides the podiatrist working within the NHS or in private practice with the opportunity to extend their scope of practice to include surgical management of foot and ankle pathologies. This course provides the podiatrist with the theoretical underpinning required to pursue this career route. The modular course is a collaborative initiative offered in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University.

Teaching, learning and assessment

A range of student-centred learning methods including tutorials, seminars and experimental laboratory classes are utilised. Your performance will be assessed by a variety of methods including course work and examination. Class sizes are normally around 10-15.

Teaching hours and attendance

This course is delivered by attendance and by online learning. You will generally be required to attend QMU/ Glasgow Caledonian University a few days a week to participate in classes. You will also be required to carry out additional self directed independent work. Your exact attendance (days and hours) at QMU/GCU will depend on which module you are studying. The part-time route allows you to space your studies out over a longer period of time to suit your needs.

Links with industry/professional bodies

The course is approved by the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians, Glasgow, The Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, and the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists (SOCAP). On completion of the MSc you will be eligible to apply for a surgical training post. Surgical training posts are not part of the academic programme of study and are not arranged by either university.

This course enhances students’ existing knowledge and understanding of the practice of podiatric surgery and the study of the foot and lower limb in health and disease. The course is approved by the Faculty of Surgery, Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists. Students also examine inter-professional practice and work towards career development within the NHS and other institutions. Practitioners are able to graduate whilst in full-time employment and the course enhances career prospects in relation to podiatric surgery. The course is fully integrated within the University's health and social science graduate program, and provides valuable cross-disciplinary experience through common modules shared with other courses in the scheme. Typically delivered in one-week study blocks this approach allows attendance for students based in the UK, EU and internationally. Research is integrated with taught lectures and tutorials as well as seminars. Varied methods of assessment include assignments, case histories around student’s professional practice and written exams. A dissertation module linked to podiatric surgery makes up the final research-based aspect of the course.

It is expected students will be within a professional setting for a minimum of 15 hours a week to help relating learning from the course to professional practice.

Applicants from outside the UK must have successfully completed an undergraduate podiatry programme at a level deemed to be equivalent to the UK BSc(Hons) Podiatry.

The MSc programme is structured on a semester basis and can be taken over a period of one to six years. The first semester of the academic year runs from September to January; the second semester from February to June. The dissertation is completed in the summer period (semester C).

All modules are at M Level and are awarded 30 M Level Credits. The taught component of each module lasts for 12 weeks. Each of the modules will entail the same amount of study (300 hours). This is divided between contact time at the University, directed study (pursuing learning objectives specifically associated with the module) and private study which includes reading and preparation of assignments. The allocation of the hours will vary between modules. The dissertation can be taken as a 30 credit (short) dissertation consisting of a piece of work relating to work based practice such as an audit, patient survey or service development or the dissertation can be taken as a 60 credit (long) dissertation involving an in-depth research project.

Tutorial support is available to you from personal development tutors, module leaders and project supervisors and there are additional resources available within the University to assist you with your study skills.

We are pleased to invite podiatry graduates to apply for an MSc scholarship funded through the Scholl Podiatric Research and Education Fund. This scholarship provides funding for the successful candidate to undertake the Master’s degree in Podiatry on a full time basis. The scholarship includes the payment of MSc fees and a small sabbatical fund to complete the research project. The project will investigate the podiatric needs of adolescent patients with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. Applicants should hold a BSc (Hons) in podiatry (minimum 2.1).

The programme utilises a wide variety of contemporary learning and teaching approaches which challenges the students to work independently as well as fostering an appreciation of the value of a team approach to care. These key generic skills are developed and utilised to promote the highest quality of practice and enable the students to use the best available evidence as well as widening their scope of practice.

This flexible MSc course provides an opportunity for podiatrists to develop their own programme of study at masters level when studying from their own home or work base.

This innovative course will allow you to choose from a range of modules to develop your own masters qualification, or to customise the course content in response to modern day podiatry practice, keeping you up to date with the latest developments and improving your career prospects.

The course can be studied at a time most suitable for you, through a distance e-learning route with tutor support and no requirement to attend QMU, or if preferred, it can be studied through a mix of distance e-learning and block attendance at the University campus.

Teaching Learning and Assessment

Distance e-learning modules will be taught using QMU’s virtual learning environment which requires access to the internet at a time most suitable to you. The virtual learning environment will be used to deliver course content, group tutorial discussion, tutor support and course work assignment submissions. If you choose to study modules that require attendance, course content will be delivered through lecture presentations, seminars and tutorials. Your performance will be assessed by coursework assignments, however, some modules require an examination. Class sizes are usually less than 15 students.

Teaching Hours and Attendance

Course content will depend on the module size. Single modules worth 15 credits will run for a shorter time, usually 3 to 4 months, whereas double modules which are worth 30 credits will run for approximately 6 months. Double modules will begin in September and single modules can begin in either September or January. If you require attendance at the University, this will be in accordance with the academic timetable.

The Pharmacology for Podiatrists module has been approved by the Health and Care Professions Council for annotation on their professional register.
