Assessment methods

Each of the six taught modules is typically assessed through 50% coursework and 50% closed-book class test. The major project is assessed through presentation to a panel of examiners, viva and written report.

Facilities

A state-of-the-art University library gives you access to most of the world’s leading publications. Other major facilities include a Cisco Academy networking laboratory, a Wireless Communications laboratory including a 1-65 GHz anechoic chamber and a satellite communication earth station, and a Communication Systems simulation laboratory equipped with PCs running the latest versions of MATLAB, SIMULINK, STK and other software.

In addition, we have recently opened a Calypto lab, which has software licences and support for the Catapult C toolset. This is used to develop advanced electronic products, such as the next generation of smart phones, more quickly and cost-effectively and to help engineers overcome design challenges in the increasingly complex world of board and chip design. We are one of only four UK universities and 60 universities globally that have been granted permission to use the software worth £1.9m.

Year two

You will return to university following successful completion of your work placement at the start of the summer semester the following year to undertake your individual project and write your dissertation, with the aim of completing the course within 24 months of entry.

Teaching

The School of Computer Science and Informatics has a strong and active research culture which informs and directs our teaching. We are committed to providing teaching of the highest standard and received an excellent report in the most recent Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) review.

Modules are delivered through a series of either full or half-day contact sessions, which include lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and laboratory classes.

Most of your taught modules will have further information for you to study and you will be expected to work through this in your own time according to the guidance provided by the lecturer for that module.

Support

All students are allocated a personal tutor who will monitor your progress throughout your time at university and will support you in your personal development planning. You will see your Personal Tutor at least once each semester.

Our Senior Personal Tutor can also advise and respond to any personal matters as they arise. The School also has a formal student-staff panel to discuss topics or issues of mutual interest.

Students are responsible for obtaining their placement. The School actively assists students on “with Placement” courses in finding a suitable placement.

Feedback on coursework may be provided via written comments on work submitted, by provision of ‘model’ answers and/or through discussion in contact sessions.

Assessment

The taught modules are assessed through examinations and a wide range of in-course assessments, such as written reports, extended essays, practical assignments and oral presentations.

The placement is assessed through a reflective report that demonstrates that the student has developed skills as an IT Professional.

All our one year full time Computer Science Masters programmes are available with an optional one year industry placement. The 'with placement' programmes give you additional industrial experience by applying the skills you have learned throughout your studies.

They offer you the opportunity to work for one year in a highly professional and stimulating environment. You will be a full time employee in a company earning a salary and will learn new skills that can't be taught at University. During the placement, you will be able to gain further insight into industrial practice that you can take forward into your individual project.

We will provide excellent academic and personal support during both your academic and placement periods together with comprehensive careers guidance from our very experienced dedicated Careers and Placements Service.

Although the responsibility for finding a placement is with you, our Careers and Placements Service maintains a wide variety of employers who offer placement opportunities and organise special training sessions to help you secure a placement, from job application to the interview. In order to qualify for the placement period you must maintain an overall average pass mark of not less than 60% across all modules studied in semester ‘A’.

You will be a full time employee in a company earning a salary and will learn new skills that can't be taught at University. During the placement, you will be able to gain further insight into industrial practice that you can take forward into your individual project.

We will provide excellent academic and personal support during both your academic and placement periods together with comprehensive careers guidance from our very experienced dedicated Careers and Placements Service.

Although the responsibility for finding a placement is with you, our Careers and Placements Service maintains a wide variety of employers who offer placement opportunities and organise special training sessions to help you secure a placement, from job application to the interview. About the course

The MSc Advanced Computer Science course consists of two major parts: taught modules and an MSc project. Each taught module has an assigned number of credits (either 15 or 30). Some modules are compulsory and some are optional. The project is compulsory and has a modular value of 60. In order to obtain an MSc degree you must study and pass 120 credits of taught modules plus the project i.e. 180 credits in total.

Through this two-year programme you will get a first-hand understanding of the vital problem-solving role of software, the interdisciplinary opportunities available, and what computational systems can achieve.

Through a gentle introduction and intensive support, you will be introduced to programming skills using important languages such as Java and Python. Structure

Teaching

The School of Computer Science and Informatics has a strong and active research culture which informs and directs our teaching. We are committed to providing teaching of the highest standard and received an excellent report in the most recent Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) review.

A diverse range of teaching and learning styles are used throughout the MSc in Computing and the MSc in Computing with Placement. Students will attend lectures, participate in seminars, workshops and tutorials, and carry out practical and laboratory work.

Students obtain support materials either via Learning Central (Cardiff University’s Virtual Learning Environment) or from study packs specially developed for selected modules.

You will also undertake a project and independent study to enable you to complete a dissertation. Dissertation topics may be suggested by you or chosen from a list of options proposed by academic staff reflecting their current interest.

Support

As a School, we pride ourselves on providing a supportive environment in which we are able to help and encourage our students.

All students are allocated a personal tutor who will monitor your progress throughout your time at university and will support you in your Personal Development Planning. You will see your Personal Tutor at least once each semester.

Outside of scheduled tutor sessions, our Senior Personal Tutor runs an open door policy, being on hand to advise and respond to any personal matters as they arise.

The School has a formal student-staff panel to discuss topics or issues of mutual interest, in addition we schedule fortnightly informal gatherings over coffee for all students and staff associated with MSc Programmes.

Students are responsible for obtaining their placement. The School actively assists students on “with Placement” courses in finding a suitable placement.

Feedback:

Feedback on coursework may be provided via written comments on work submitted, by provision of ‘model’ answers and/or through discussion in contact sessions.

Assessment

The taught modules within the programmes are assessed through examinations and a wide range of in-course assessments, such as written reports, extended essays, practical assignments and oral presentations.

The placement is assessed through a reflective report that demonstrates that the student has developed skills as an IT Professional.

The individual project and dissertation will enable you to demonstrate your ability to build upon and exploit knowledge and skills gained to exhibit critical and original thinking based on a period of independent study and learning.

Recent graduates have gained employment in roles such as software developers, systems analysts, business analysts, IT consultants, and support engineers.

MSc Computing graduates are employed by organisations of all sizes locally, nationally, and internationally. The Master's programme in International Tourism and Aviation Management with Internship seeks to prepare aspiring individuals for a managerial career within either the tourism or aviation industry. The course offers the opportunity to interpret and assess trends and changing management practices within the tourism and aviation industry. In doing so it widens career opportunities and the possibility of movement between the two sectors. The mode of study is full-time - studied over 18 months and the internship component is completed after all taught modules have been passed.

You will be expected to undertake a total of 1,200 hours of planned full-time work experience or internship in a tourism or aviation organisation. Normally this will equate to 30 weeks spent with your internship employer completing various work related roles and tasks and completing the various guided learning activities required as part of your programme. The University does not guarantee an internship and you will need to be proactive in finding what might be considered a suitable intern position. To prepare you for the internship one assessed module: Organisational Behaviour in Theory and Practice is incorporated within the course.

Course detail

The MA programme adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the study of tourism and aviation management, by drawing upon international case study material, to understand the global operations of both the tourism and aviation sectors. The course seeks to exploit synergies between the tourism and aviation industries to critically inspect the management-related issues, which is a key strength of the programme structure. The programme is taught by experienced team of academics, all with a background in either tourism and/or aviation management. Many of these staff are extensively published and are asked to speak at events and conferences throughout the world.

There are several practice based features of the course, in addition to the internship. These may include guest speakers from industry, use of industry relevant briefs, field work, trips and visits, which can be used to inform teaching, learning and assessment.

Internship

The Internship course seeks to provide a dynamic element to the programme introducing the principles of learning through work and allowing you to apply theoretical constructs taught on the course to a 'real world' situation. The MA International Tourism and Aviation Management with Internship is a course that suits students wishing to further apply the principles and practices of management introduced in the course through actual practise or for students seeking further work experience to enhance their professional portfolio.

MA International Tourism and Aviation Management with Internship adopts a blended teaching and learning strategy. This includes the use of lectures, tutorials, seminars, self-managed personal research and learning through work experience. The use of information and communications technology together with electronic learning support materials and e-books are central to the delivery of the curriculum. A feature of our learning approach is the use of industry-based briefs.

Assessment

Assessments feature both formative (in-course) and summative (final) assessment. Normally a module comprises of no more than two or three pieces of work. No formal examinations are set. The course embraces the use of essays, reports, presentations, case studies, portfolios, audits, in-class tests, project plans, industry-based briefs, business games and work-place simulation (to name but a few). Traditionally the teaching, learning and assessment strategy of the school at Masters level has been to engage with a wide variety of assessment techniques reflecting the broad abilities of different students to meet the assessment outcomes of the various modules.

What will I study?

The programme is designed around a set of modules that are common to all our ‘Business with’ Masters pathways. These modules cover general business functions, strategic management and organisational analysis, developing your strategic awareness, leadership potential and understanding of the theory and practice of international business. In the second semester you will be given the opportunity to specialise in Marketing Management.

In the second semester you will build an understanding of the role of relationship marketing, and by doing so, recognise the importance of customer retention and the internal customer. You will also learn about the marketing processes within the context of a globalised world, with an understanding of the business implications. Throughout the course, you can develop an appreciation of the varying approaches to marketing for organisations working within a dynamic global environment and the effect these challenges place upon marketing planning in an international context.

Following your second semester, you will undertake the Advanced Practice element of this programme which consists of either an internship or an applied group consultancy project where you will work with a real organisation on a live business problem. You will benefit from valuable work experience and develop key business insights.

For those completing an internship, you will also undertake a dissertation in a marketing context, supported by an academic supervisor with relevant expertise from this subject area. You will be able to draw upon your learnings and experience from your internship for this. For those not undertaking an internship, you will complete your consultancy project.

Advanced Practice stage

This stage of your programme offers you the opportunity to secure a 12-15 week internship or complete a group consultancy project, giving you experience of the workplace environment or live business issues, both an excellent way to put your learning in to practice.

This stage of your course takes place between your second and final semester and is one semester (15 weeks) in duration.

The full duration of your programme depends on your start date:
-September start dates: your programme will last up to 22 months. You will have a summer break after Semester 2, and commence your Advanced Practice stage in September.
-January start dates: your programme will run for 16-18 months. There is no summer break included in this programme for those starting in January. Your Advanced Practice stage will commence in September.
-May start dates: your programme will run for 16-18 months. There is no summer break included in this programme for those starting in May. Your Advanced Practice stage will commence in January.

Internships

If you undertake an internship as part of this stage, it may be paid or unpaid, and will last 12-15 weeks. The internship can be sourced by students or the University. We will support you in the application process and equip you with the necessary internship application and selection skills (e.g. CV writing, interview techniques etc). All internships will be approved by the University to ensure that they offer you an appropriate learning experience and working environment. During your internship, you will be allocated an internship tutor who will visit you during your internship and support you in completing the internship assessment.

The module is assessed by a reflective portfolio which is focused on your development via this employment opportunity.

Consultancy project

The alternative consultancy module allows you to work in teams with a business organisation, working on consultancy-based projects on real business scenarios.

How will I be taught and assessed?

This course is taught using a range of methods, including: lectures, seminars, and workshops, where you will develop your understanding of today’s global businesses. You will be expected to engage in further independent study, involving directed and self-directed learning, to further build your knowledge.

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research.

Significant emphasis is placed on developing your ability to complete a Masters degree. As part of induction you will be made fully familiar with the learning resources and support available to you. There will also be weekly academic support sessions designed to build your confidence and ability as a postgraduate learner. You will also be allocated an individual guidance tutor at induction. You will meet this tutor at regular intervals across your period of study.

Assessments for this course are based on a mix of assignments, presentations and group work.

Careers and further study

Graduates on the programme have joined a wide range of businesses, including graduate training schemes. A significant number of graduates have gone back to work for a family business or even started up their own businesses.

Structure

Students will undertake a placement following the taught stage of the course and prior to undertaking their individual project and dissertation. Most students start their placement in the summer of Year 1. The breakdown is as follows:

Year 1: 100 credits core modules, 20 credit optional modules.

The School of Computer Science and Informatics has a strong and active research culture which informs and directs our teaching. We are committed to providing teaching of the highest standard and received an excellent report in the most recent Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) review.

A diverse range of teaching and learning styles are used throughout the MSc in Computing and IT Management. Students will attend lectures, participate in seminars, workshops and tutorials, and carry out practical and laboratory work.

Students obtain support materials usually via Learning Central (Cardiff University’s Virtual Learning Environment).

You will also undertake a project and independent study to enable you to complete a dissertation. Dissertation topics may be suggested by you or chosen from a list of options proposed by academic staff reflecting their current interest.

Support

As a School, we pride ourselves on providing a supportive environment in which we are able to help and encourage our students.

All students are allocated a personal tutor who will monitor your progress throughout your time at university and will support you in your personal development planning. You will see your Personal Tutor at least once each semester.

Our Senior Personal Tutor can also advise and respond to any personal matters as they arise. The School also has a formal student-staff panel to discuss topics or issues of mutual interest.

Students are responsible for obtaining their placement. The School actively assists students on “with Placement” courses in finding a suitable placement.

Feedback:

Feedback on coursework may be provided via written comments on work submitted, by provision of ‘model’ answers and/or through discussion in contact sessions.

Assessment

The taught modules are assessed through examinations and a wide range of in-course assessments, such as written reports, extended essays, practical assignments and oral presentations.

The placement is assessed through a reflective report that demonstrates that the student has developed skills as an IT Professional.

The individual project and dissertation will enable you to demonstrate your ability to build upon and exploit knowledge and skills gained to exhibit critical and original thinking based on a period of independent study and learning.

The Internship

The internship requires that you work for a minimum of 1,200 hours (equivalent to 30 weeks) with a hospitality employer. These positions can be in either paid or non-paid employment. The important thing is that the internship allows you to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired on your course to a practical work-based situation. The internship will allow you to improve and acquire new skills, explore various career opportunities, network and work with others a part of a team.

It will also enhance your understanding of the world of work and what constitutes professional practice in the workplace. In doing so the internship seeks to enhance your career prospects and allow you to become more focussed in determining a potential career pathway. Please note the University does not guarantee a work placement for your internship – the onus is with the student to pro-actively seek an internship, which requires working closely with the placements team.

Career and study progression

The course combines, academic rigor with contemporary managerial and strategic issues in luxury hospitality management. Whilst this enhances your employability in the growing and dynamic hospitality industry, it can also be applied to a range of other professions.

Skills such as brand management or customer experience are also valuable in industries such as PR or advertising, whilst studying business in a global context prepares you for numerous other career paths.

The International Enterprise Information Management MSc is offered as a partnership between Kingston University and Neu-Ulm University and leads to a dual degree from both universities. The programme is designed to develop new knowledge and skills that are particularly important to design and implement information systems strategies in international organisations.

You will have the opportunity to enhance your personal and professional development by studying in both countries together with your colleagues from the other university and by undertaking an international internship in the 'other' country (German students will complete the internship in the UK while UK students will complete theirs in Germany), in an international business organisation.

Work placement scheme

Kingston University has set up a scheme that allows postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing to include a work placement element in their course starting from September 2017. The placement scheme is available for both international and home/EU students.

-The work placement, up to 12 months; is optional.
-The work placement takes place after postgraduate students have successfully completed the taught portion of their degree.
-The responsibility for finding the placement is with the student. We cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it.
-As the work placement is an assessed part of the course for international students, this is covered by a student's tier 4 visa.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences offers a range of MSc programmes in Scientific Research Training which includes an option to undertake an international placement at a institute/industry in which an extensive 8 month research project is undertaken.
Masters in Research Training with International Placement are available in a range of disciplines;

Keele University has developed collaborative relationships with a number of international research institutes and industries which has enabled well qualified students to develop their scientific training and employment skills within an international context. We believe that this will help to develop future employees with an international outlook, competent in at least one international language in addition to English. For all students the course offers an opportunity to carry out a project within Keele University under the supervision of international experts in their appropriate discipline. International students thus have an opportunity to receive extensive training in English.

All students will spend the first part of the course at Keele, and either remain at Keele to undertake their approximately eight month research project or will undertake a placement in an international research institute/industry as laboratory research assistants, working on projects in the host institution and pursuing a programme of research training. Financial support for example through the EU ERASMUS Scheme may be available to support students undertaking their project/placement outside the UK in Europe. International students may opt to undertake their placement within the UK or at Keele University.

Applicants who are not fluent in English are expected to have attained the equivalent of an IELTS score of at least 6.5. Candidates who do not meet these criteria, but can evidence appropriate, alternative professional qualifications and/or experience will be considered.

Course Aims

The aim of the courses is to enhance the employment prospects of science graduates within their chosen research discipline by developing and improving their scientific, laboratory and language skills. The courses will also provide basic skills in vocational and education training through the students’ work programmes. At the end of the training period students will:

- Have systematic understanding of knowledge, and a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights, much of which is at, or informed by, the forefront of the subject of their chosen discipline

- Have conceptual understanding to evaluate critically current research and advanced scholarship in their discipline

- Be able to evaluate methodologies and develop critiques of them and, where appropriate, to propose new hypotheses

- Have developed scientific skills and knowledge, and transferable skills, in a international workplace setting

- Have comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to their own research

- Be able to record and reflect on skills and learning from the research laboratory experience through the ‘Realise’ career development scheme.

- Be conversant with the running of a modern research laboratory.

- Have developed skills in an appropriate international language, including scientific vocabulary.

- Have developed organisational and commercial awareness.

For those students undertaking a placement/research project in Europe the work and achievement on the programme will be documented in the EU Europass, a record of achievement signed by all parties. All students are required to pursue a self reflecting activity which enables them to identify their personal and professional skills and development needs

Teaching & Assessment

Students must complete formal assessment on all modules. During the placement this will include keeping an extensive record of the training attended and skills obtained, with a reflective report (for the research training portfolio), as well as a dissertation on the project undertaken during the placement.

Additional Costs

Although students who under a placement project within another EU member state may be entitled to an ERASMUS scholarship there may be additional costs required to meet living expenses and insurances within the host country. The amount required will be dependent on the cost of living in each country.
