The MSc Advanced Computer Science course consists of two major parts: taught modules and an MSc project. Each taught module has an assigned number of credits (either 15 or 30). Solving problems of air, land and water pollution and protecting society against natural disasters are also important aspects of civil engineering.

This 18-month MSc course has been designed to meet the needs of a broad range of engineering industries. As a Masters student, you’ll gain the specialist and generic skills necessary to lead future developments, with practical experience provided by the industrial placement.

The course has a significant design element based on the most up-to-date specialist design guidelines. This includes a major design project that integrates acquired knowledge and acts as a platform for structured self-learning.

This MSc in Civil Engineering with Industrial Placement is suitable for graduates with a background in any discipline of civil engineering. Applicants with a degree in environmental engineering, earth science, mathematics, physics and mechanical engineering may also be considered.

The MSc in Civil Engineering with Industrial Placement has four optional specialist streams:

Industrial placement or industry-linked project

You'll complete an industry-linked project or industrial placement in the period from June to August. The Department will support you in making applications for industry internships, and will provide project topics with industry partners, for industry-linked projects. Industry-linked projects generally involve a short secondment to industry as part of the project.

You’ll study

You'll take the compulsory module Civil Engineering Design Projects. This module gives you the opportunity to work on real projects. Students currently undertake a renewable energy project. You’ll develop comprehensive and innovative designs that involve structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and water engineering, management, environmental and financial planning.

In additional to the industrial placement you'll also take the compulsory module Research Protocols for Science & Engineering which supports the dissertation project. You also have a wide choice of optional modules.

Following successful completion of the taught component, you’ll undertake a dissertation. If you’re on one of the specialist streams you’ll undertake a research project on a topic related to that stream. The dissertation can be linked to the industrial placement and worked on together with the industrial partner.

New class

Starting in session 2017-18, a new class on Building Information Modelling (BIM) will be available as an option for students who register for this MSc. Knowledge of BIM, a process for creating and managing information on a construction project across the project lifecycle, is sought after by employers.

Accreditation

The MSc Civil Engineering programme (including the specialist streams except for the water engineering stream) has been fully accredited by Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree.

The accreditation of MSc in Civil Engineering with Water Engineering & Project Management will be applied three years after initial launch in 2016.

Course structure

You'll take 210 credits made up of 120 credit taught modules, 30 credits industrial placement and 60 credits dissertation. The 18 months full-time MSc course spans three semesters as follows:

  • Semester 1 – Year 1, January to May - 60 credits of taught classes
  • Industrial placement – Year 1, June to September - 30 credits
  • Semester 2 – Year 1, October to December - Research methods and design project classes and 30 credits of taught classes
  • Semester 3 – Year 2, January to June - 60 credits dissertation

Learning & teaching

Some classes involve fieldtrips and/or lab work. For fieldtrips, you need to wear warm clothing, waterproof jacket/trousers and sturdy shoes/boots (e.g. hiking boots or non-slip wellington boots).

Course Content

The full-time course comprises of four equally weighted modules in each of the first two terms, with three being compulsory and one optional.

The dissertation carries one third of the marks for the course and is undertaken after the taught modules have been completed.

The part-time option is designed with two modules in each of the four terms. The compulsory modules give an excellent coverage of the core material in finance designed in a way that is applicable to accounting.

Teaching

The modules on the Finance and Accounting Master's programme incorporate a diverse range of teaching methods which reflect the module learning outcomes and the demands of the subject material. Effective learning is achieved through a combination of lectures, seminars, directed independent study, workshops, oral presentations, and varied assessment patterns.

Use of appropriate IT resources is expected (e.g. electronic resources to access data, and relevant software programmes used in research methods). Dissertation research will give you the opportunity to integrate your knowledge of important themes, frameworks and research findings in finance and accounting obtained via lectures, seminars, and workshops.

Students who successfully complete a professional placement will be invited to attend a tutorial day to give a presentation about their experience. An optional reflective journal during the placement may assist in preparation for the presentation and dissertation.

Assessment

All modules are assessed by a combination of coursework and final examinations. Students who successfully complete the taught part of the course can proceed to the dissertation stage. Students are expected to work on their dissertation in the summer and to submit the final draft in mid-September. Students who follow the Professional Practice pathway will complete their placement during the summer and work on their dissertation afterwards, submitting in January.

Professional Placement

All students who enrol on the full-time Finance and Accounting MSc will have the opportunity to complete a placement. A placement can significantly improve your employability and expose you to real-world situations in the Banking and Finance industry, and importantly, allow you to network with industry professionals.

Students completing the work placement option will have a competitive edge in pursuing careers as high-level analysts, economists and managers in financial institutions, governments, financial regulators, business companies and central banks, as well as international organisations.

The placement option is available to full-time applicants and will last for 12-15 weeks during the summer of your course. Placements will begin at the earliest in the last week of May and will finish by September. Some employers may also provide a salary.

For students who complete the placement, their dissertation will be completed after the placement has finished. Students who do not find a placement will do their dissertation throughout the summer and submit in September.

During the year you will spend over 50 days at university and 120 days in schools. You will work with other trainees and tutors in your subject area to consider the principles and practice of teaching your subject including curriculum design, the development of materials, classroom management and lesson planning. You will also work with trainees from other subjects in a programme of lectures and seminar groups to examine a broad range of educational issues. There are two blocks of school experience, one starting in the autumn and the other in the spring. You will spend time observing other teachers and their classes before beginning to teach yourself. You will teach more during the second school experience than you will in the first one. During the year you will also complete a short placement in a primary school so that you can see what pupils experience before they arrive in secondary school.

The course includes residential fieldwork based at the Field Studies Council centre in Surrey. There are many other opportunities for you to develop your abilities to teach beyond the classroom, in the school grounds and beyond.

School Direct Route offered: The School Direct Non Salaried teacher training route is composed of a partnership between King’s College London and a Lead School. Students apply to the Lead School for admission to the programme. The academic components of the course are delivered by King’s College London whilst the secondary school teaching experience is organised by the Lead School.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

You can typically expect:

  • The equivalent of over 50 days of academic sessions at King’s (typically three hours in the morning and/or afternoon spread throughout the academic year).
  • Approximately 120 days of teaching placement.* This includes a short period of placement in primary schools (typically four days).
  • A number of one to one tutorials totaling five to seven sessions across the year.
  • Two visits from a tutor whilst on placement to observe lessons and monitor progress
  • Regular** meetings with a mentor, who will be a member of staff at your placement school, whilst on placement.
  • Written feedback on all credit-bearing assignments within four weeks of the deadline.

* This 120 day figure represents the standard number of placement days. In certain cases, following assessment by course tutors and mentors, students may be required to undertake a greater number of placement days to demonstrate their ability to meet the Teacher Standards.

** Typically each trainee will have a meeting with their mentor during each week they are on placement. In certain circumstances the frequency may vary.

The types of learning commitment encompassed within the course vary depending on modules. For this course one credit represents the equivalent of 10 hours of learning and engagement.

 Assessment

  • The 45-credit honours-level module will be assessed by a combination of a written portfolio (equivalent to 8,000 words) and assessment of your teaching practice against the Teaching Standards as set out by the government’s Department for Education. Progress in meeting the teaching standards will be monitored through three progress reports that will be completed by staff at the placement school.
  • The 30-credit master’s-level modules will each be assessed by a 6,000 word written assignment heavily based on in-school research that trainees undertake.
  • The 15-credit honours-level module will be assessed by an assignment focusing on data collection methods in the school environment.

Location

Students undertake placements in secondary schools that work in partnership with King’s College London. Partnership schools are located across central London and the Greater London area. Whilst every effort is made to place PGCE trainees in local schools, due to the changing nature of initial teacher education and limited availability of placements in certain subject areas, trainees should be prepared to travel to their placement schools throughout the Greater London area and beyond.

Students also organise their own placement at a state primary school. Further information on this short placement is provided during the course.

You will complete modules on campus and practice placements. Teaching takes place in our purpose-built facilities, which include an Occupational Therapy Skills Facility, multidisciplinary therapy clinic and movement analysis laboratory.

Members of the course team are actively involved with the professional body (RCOT) in a number of capacities, including membership of committees relating to education, and steering groups for profession related research projects.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The programme is comprised of six modules four delivered in the first year and two in year two. You will develop your knowledge, skills and capabilities through small-group learning, through a case-based and client-centred approach. You will develop your learning via realistic cases, so that you can see the contemporary practice relevance of the content. The face-to-face time will be used in an active and interactive way, and we expect you to engage in tutor- and self-directed learning.

Students will have opportunity to test their knowledge and skill development through a range of assessment tasks, including practice based learning assessment, written assignments, presentations, practical skills assessments, occupational analysis, project work, OSCE and examinations.

In addition to these summative assessment tasks (which students must pass in order to pass each module), we offer formative assessment opportunities which include online learning tasks, peer assessment of written work, class presentations, academic advisor support for the core practice skills portfolio, and regular debrief sessions of practice placement experience. These opportunities are central to your learning, as you will receive feedback that is relevant both to your development and to the summative assessment tasks in the module.

All the core members of the teaching team are HCPC registered Occupational Therapists and members of the RCOT. The team has wide and diverse experience, including current practice, research informed teaching, and research. We have staff who are specialists in a range of Occupational Therapy practice and research areas, who are able to bring this expertise and experience to life for students in the teaching sessions.

Inter-professional working is an integral part of Occupational Therapy practice. During this course and in your professional career, you will be working alongside other healthcare related professionals such as Doctors, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Psychologists and Social Workers to deliver effective and patient-centred care. Whilst you are at University, you will have timetabled sessions where you will work in partnership with several professions. You will learn about the crossover in care amongst disciplines, as well as distinct differences and boundaries between the professions. Learning about, with and from students in other disciplines will help prepare you for real-world practice settings. During your time on placement, you will work with a variety of professionals and will be a part of the wider multi-disciplinary team. This will further develop your skills in communication and collaborative working to provide optimal care and improve health and social care outcomes.

OPPORTUNITIES

During the programme you will undertake 4 placement blocks in a range of contemporary settings which are arranged throughout the programme. You will experience real-life occupational therapy practice from the first semester of the course. You will be supported by your Practice Placement Educator and be also visited by your UCLan Placement Tutor. This means that you will have opportunity to learn in the practice environment whilst also being supported by academic staff in the university. You will ned to successfully complete minimum 1,000 hours of assessed placement practice. Course details

This programme is part of a suite of programmes designed primarily for international students who are government officers or policy officers, researchers or practitioners in non-governmental organisations who have work experience in social policy areas. The study of Policy into Practice concerns the development and nature of government interventions aimed at ensuring the welfare needs of their populations are met, and the ways those interventions are put into effect. Starting from an examination of UK social policy, the programme widens out to examine the experience and challenges facing other countries. The programmes include the opportunity to have a work-based placement within one or more public, private or third sector organisation in the West Midlands area.

The programme introduces students to the study of Social Policy and Practice and considers current and future political, economic and demographic contexts of policy making around the world.

Specialist option in health policy

Students can now study an MA or PGDiploma in Policy into Practice with Integrated Placement (Health) which has a particular focus on heath policies and interventions. Developed in collaboration with the Health Services Management Centre (HSMC) the programmes cover UK health policy, as well as the experiences of, and challenges facing, other countries in relation to health policy and population health and wellbeing. The programme has been designed for national and local government officers, as well as officers of non-governmental organisations who are involved in health policy-making or delivering health services in countries other than the UK. Students who successfully complete the taught part of the course can proceed to the dissertation stage. Students who do not follow the pathway with Professional Practice are expected to work on their dissertation in the summer and to submit the final draft in mid-September. Students who follow the Professional Practice pathway will complete their placement during the summer and work on their dissertation afterwards, submitting in January.

Professional Placement

All students who enrol on the full-time Business Finance MSc will have the opportunity to complete a placement. A placement can significantly improve your employability and expose you to real-world situations in the Banking and Finance industry, and importantly, allow you to network with industry professionals.

Students completing the work placement option will have a competitive edge in pursuing careers as high-level analysts, economists and managers in financial institutions, governments, financial regulators, business companies and central banks, as well as international organisations.

The placement option is available to full-time applicants and will last for 12-15 weeks during the summer of your course. Placements will begin at the earliest in the last week of May and will finish by September Some employers may also provide a salary.

For students who complete the placement, their dissertation will be completed after the placement has finished. Students who do not find a placement will do their dissertation throughout the summer and submit in September.

Students who successfully complete a professional placement will be invited to attend a tutorial day to give a presentation about their experience. An optional reflective journal during the placement may assist in preparation for the presentation and dissertation.

Assessment

All modules of this postgraduate degree course are assessed by a combination of coursework and final examinations. Students who successfully complete the taught part of the course can proceed to the dissertation stage. MSc students are expected to work on their dissertation in the summer and to submit the final draft in mid-September. Students who follow the Professional Practice pathway will complete their placement during the summer and work on their dissertation afterwards, submitting in January.

Professional Practice Placement

All students who enrol on the full-time Finance and Investment MSc will have the opportunity to complete a placement. A placement can significantly improve your employability and expose you to real-world situations in the Banking and Finance industry, and importantly, allow you to network with industry professionals.

Students completing the work placement option will have a competitive edge in pursuing careers as high-level analysts, economists and managers in financial institutions, governments, financial regulators, business companies and central banks, as well as international organisations.

The placement option is available to full-time applicants and will last for 12-15 weeks during the summer of your course. Placements will begin at the earliest in the last week of May and will finish by September. Some employers may also provide a salary.

For students who complete the placement, their dissertation will be completed after the placement has finished. Students who do not find a placement will do their dissertation throughout the summer and submit in September.

Description

During the year you will spend over 50 days at King’s and 120 days in schools. You will work with other trainees and tutors in your subject area to consider the principles and practice of teaching your subject including curriculum design, the development of materials, classroom management and lesson planning. You will also work with trainees from other subjects in a programme of lectures and seminar groups to examine a broad range of education issues. During both secondary school placements there are occasional days in college for tutorials to support and monitor progress towards the standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). There are crosscurricular research tasks and assignments.

There are two blocks of school experience, one starting in the autumn and the other in the spring. You will spend time observing other teachers and their classes before beginning to teach yourself. You will teach more during the second school experience than you will in the first one. During the year you will also complete a short placement in a primary school so that you can see what pupils experience before they arrive in secondary schools.

The course includes residential fieldwork based at the Field Studies Council centre in Surrey. There are many other opportunities for you to develop your abilities to teach beyond the classroom, in the school grounds and beyond.

Course purpose

The aim of our course is to make you an effective teacher of science and to help you develop high professional standards. Our course is designed to prepare science teachers to work in secondary schools as part of a team that teaches science up to Year 11 and biology to Years 12 and 13 (post-16).

Course format and assessment

Teaching

You can typically expect:

  • The equivalent of over 50 days of academic sessions at King’s (typically three hours in the morning and/or afternoon spread throughout the academic year)
  • Approximately 120 days of teaching placement.* This includes a short period of placement in primary schools (typically four days)
  • Five to seven tutorials across the year
  • Two visits from a tutor whilst on placement to observe lessons and monitor progress
  • Regular** meetings with a mentor, who will be a member of staff at your placement school, whilst on placement
  • Written feedback on all credit-bearing assignments within four weeks of the deadline.

* This 120 day figure represents the standard number of placement days. In certain cases, following assessment by course tutors and mentors, students may be required to undertake a greater number of placement days to demonstrate their ability to meet the Teacher Standards.

** Typically each trainee will have a meeting with their mentor during each week they are on placement. In certain circumstances the frequency may vary. The types of learning commitment encompassed within the course vary depending on modules. For this course one credit represents the equivalent of 10 hours of learning and engagement

Assessment

  • The 45-credit honours-level module will be assessed by a combination of a written portfolio (equivalent to 8,000 words) and assessment of your teaching practice against the Teaching Standards as set out by the government’s Department for Education. Progress in meeting the teaching standards will be monitored through three progress reports that will be completed by staff at the placement school.
  • The 30-credit master’s-level modules will each be assessed by a 6,000 word written assignment heavily based on in-school research that trainees undertake.
  • The 15-credit honours-level module will be assessed by an assignment focusing on data collection methods in the school environment.

Location

Students undertake placements in secondary schools that work in partnership with King’s College London. Partnership schools are located across central London and the Greater London area. Whilst every effort is made to place PGCE trainees in local schools, due to the changing nature of initial teacher education and limited availability of placements in certain subject areas, trainees should be prepared to travel to their placement schools throughout the Greater London area and beyond.

Students also organise their own short placement at a state primary school. Further information on this short placement is provided in the offer holder pack and during the course. 

Career prospects

The majority of trainees go into teaching or other areas of education; many become heads of departments or members of senior management teams; some take up careers in educational administration in the advisory or inspection services.

School based: For 24 of the 37 weeks the training takes place in schools, mainly in two complementary secondary schools but with one short primary school experience. School Direct Route offered: The School Direct Non Salaried teacher training route is composed of a partnership between King’s College London and a Lead School. Students apply to the Lead School for admission to the programme. The academic components of the course are delivered by King’s College London whilst the secondary school teaching experience is organised by the Lead School.
