This course is for people who are working as physiotherapists, who wish to develop themselves and their profession. The MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice aims to help you thrive in health and social contexts where the pace of change is fast and professionals need to be dynamic and proactive to meet the needs of the individuals that they work with.

The programme of study aims to be:

  • Clinical: with a focus on highly topical subjects, ability to learn in and from the workplace, practical experience, and ability to take specialist clinical and practice routes: for example, musculoskeletal physiotherapy, neurological physiotherapy, cardiorespiratory physiotherapy, paediatric physiotherapy, leadership and management, and education. 
  • Flexible: with a determination to enable study for students who have a variety of circumstances, and who live in different countries. Two paces of study are available (full-time and part-time) and two modes of study (distance learning, and blended learning which requires attendance). The standard full-time pace is 18 months, which can be accelerated to 12 months where relevant requirements are met. 
  • Supportive: with a focus on helping you to adjust to master’s level study at the start of the course, to stay engaged with your profession throughout the course, and to increase your employability as you progress towards completion. Alongside modules you will be involved in a ‘Learning in Community Programme,’ which includes study skills training, social events, CPD opportunities such as Master Classes, and opportunities and guidance to increase your employability, including guidance on professional registration.

Study routes

Full-time with attendance: 12-18 months

The full-time study route makes use of a blended mode of learning which includes face-to-face contact supported by online resources. This is designed with international students in mind and offers attractive practical modules as well as opportunities to learn in clinical settings (see modules).

The standard duration of the full-time route is 18 months. This is valuable if your priority is to use all opportunities to develop your professional standing and employability. If you wish to prioritise quick completion of your MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice, and meet requirements, you can accelerate it to 12 months duration.

Part-time with attendance: 3-7 years

You can study the MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice part-time, with a minimum duration of three years, and maximum duration of seven years. If you study this route you can select modules which involve some attendance and some online study. For example, some modules are delivered with blocks of attendance and online study between these blocks. If you study part-time you can also choose to complete distance learning modules as part of your programme.

Distance learning (part-time or full-time):

1-7 years You can choose modules that enable you to complete your MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice entirely as distance learning . You can study distance learning at a full-time pace (12-18 months duration) or at a part-time pace (3-7 years).

Teaching, learning and assessment

We use a range of student-centred learning methods, including tutorials, seminars and practical classes, with facilitation of work based learning and recognition of prior learning. Further specific strategies are used to enable distance learning.

Your performance will be assessed by coursework (assignments), presentations and practical examinations, and you are provided with structured support in learning how to develop and demonstrate your academic skills at a master’s level. Class sizes are usually 5-10 students.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module that is studied on-campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Your attendance requirements at QMU will vary between semesters of study, but contact time might average about six hours per week over one academic year; this would be higher during taught modules. Whether you are studying distance learning or through a mixture of face-to-face contact and online work (blended learning), each 30-credit module will entail around 300 hours of student work. This includes contact with tutors (online or face-to-face), supported by independent learning. When thinking about the total amount of learning, for the full-time pace of study, you will undertake 120 credits of study over two 15-week semesters, followed by your dissertation. This suggests up to 40 hours per week of study. A student who chooses to study part-time may be undertaking, for example, 60 credits of study, which would equate to about 20 hours per week of study.

The distance learning route can be studied part-time or full-time.

Links with industry/professional bodies

In order to design a flexible, clinical and supportive course, we talked with current students, former students and employers internationally. We collaborate with many physiotherapists and managers locally to create opportunities for our students to contribute to the development of physiotherapy services during their course. This ensures the relevance of their studies, their professional development, and advancement of the physiotherapy profession. The MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice was developed from the MSc Physiotherapy (Post- Reg) which was accredited by the UK’s Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. The MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice will be renewed for the same  accreditation. This course does not lead to HCPC registration. However, advice is given to assist the process of registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Course material will also help the student to develop knowledge and skills recognised by the HCPC

It uses physical approaches to promote, maintain, and restore physical, psychological and social wellbeing, taking account of the variations in health status. At Essex this is a science-based subject in which we are committed to applying, evaluating and reviewing the evidence that underpins and informs practice.

At the core of physiotherapy practice is the making of clinical judgement and informed interpretation of clinical information. Physiotherapists are autonomous professionals, able to act as first-contact practitioners, as well as accepting referrals from other health care professionals. Through partnership and negotiation, physiotherapists work with people to optimise their functional ability and potential.

This pre-registration course is a two-year accelerated programme which enables you to take advantage of inter-professional learning (IPL), encouraging professionals to learn with and from each other – an understanding that helps ensure you have the expertise to respond adequately and effectively to the complexity of your clients’ needs, and that care is safe, seamless and of a high standard.

Placement Opportunities

You will be introduced to physiotherapy through observing and working with physiotherapists practising in a variety of settings (primary and secondary care, public and private sectors, adult and the elderly, acute care setting and specialist mental health/learning disability services), and adopt a critical stand in the discussion of contemporary physiotherapy practice in the context of the environment of practice.

You are also introduced to key concepts in physiotherapy for the assessment and evaluation of patients, and given opportunities to explore scientific measures as indicators for health and illness.

We organise these practice placements for you to work in role with multi-professional health care teams in a wide range of settings.

Whilst on placement you will have an educator allocated to you and contact with a member of the academic team who will visit you and support you whilst on placement. Placements encompass a variety of multi-disciplinary health and social settings based within the NHS, the Private Sector, the Voluntary Sector and other Primary Health Care Services.

Over a thousand hours will be spent in the practice environment where students apply the theory and practice of physiotherapy. You develop your abilities to critically analyse clinical data and evidence, to make judgements and to respond to patients who require physiotherapy.

Placements are primarily based throughout Essex but you may also have the opportunity to experience services in Hertfordshire, Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire.

Professional accreditation

Completing our course leads to eligibility to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) as a physiotherapist.

HCPC registration is required to work as a physiotherapist in the UK, and once individuals are registered they are able to practice in a wide variety of clinical settings.

A unique feature of our School is that most of our staff work or have worked within clinical practice. This enhances our grasp of the contemporary links between academic research, the major issues of the day and real-life practice.

Physiotherapy is taught by a small and friendly team of registered experienced staff with a variety of different backgrounds and research interests. The subject lead for physiotherapy is Izzie Easton. Izzie qualified as a physiotherapist in 1998, and has practised in numerous hospitals. In particular she has gained experience working in respiratory physiotherapy, orthopaedics, and critical care.

We also have expertise in the areas of prehabilitation, rehabilitation following sports injuries, first contact trauma management, education in pain management, and computer-based ‘virtual patient’ simulators.. Full details of our staff can be found on the HHS Staff Profiles.

Specialist facilities

Within our School of Health and Human Sciences, we have a range of specialist clinical laboratories and IT facilities to assist you with the effective learning and acquisition of new skills; for students of Physiotherapy, we have two specialist labs on our Colchester Campus which provide you with all the facilities you need to train as a physiotherapist.

We also offer excellent physical and online resources in terms of libraries, computer labs, datasets, archives and other research materials. You can take advantage of our links with the Institute of Social and Economic Research, which conducts large-scale survey projects, many for government, EU and other public agencies, and has its own library.

The UK Data Archive is also based at our Colchester Campus and stores national research data.

Students on the Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy course have the opportunity to choose an optional module in areas such as Health Economics, Psychology or Management in Organisations.

Description

The Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy courses will provide you with the basic science and clinical knowledge and analytical skills to comprehensively assess and manage individuals with musculoskeletal problems. You will learn how to design, implement and evaluate care and rehabilitation programmes tailored to the needs of your individual patients.

The courses offer you flexibility, to study either full or part-time and the choice of whether to study for a full master’s qualification or a Postgraduate Diploma.

The MSc consists of modules totalling 180 credits including a research project and dissertation worth 60 credits. The Postgraduate Diploma requires completed modules with a total of 120 credits to meet the requirements of the award. If you are studying full-time you will complete the course in one year studying from September to September. Part-time students will complete the course over two years.

Course accreditation

Students on the MSc in Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (with Clinical Placements) are eligible for MACP membership on successful completion of the course. Students on the MSc in Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy are eligible to apply for MACP membership through the MACP portfolio route.

Regulating body

King’s College is regulated by the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

Location

The majority of learning for this degree takes place at the King’s College London Guy’s Campus. Please note that locations are determined by where each module is taught and may vary.

Research projects can take place in a variety of locations including King’s, occasionally other local universities and also in local hospitals, clinics or sports clubs.

Work placements can be held in any healthcare setting with a suitable MACP qualified mentor and mainly take place in the UK; Predominantly NHS outpatient physiotherapy departments, some private hospitals, private physiotherapy practices and sports clubs.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

You can expect to receive approximately 280 contact teaching hours for the MSc and 260 contact hours for the PG Dip during the courses. This will include lectures, seminars and practial sessions.

Students are expected to spend approximately two days a week studying independently and preparing for assignments during terms 1 and 2.

Students studying on the Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (with Clinical Placements) MSc and PG Dip will also go on clinical placements totalling at least 150 hours and will have direct contact time with their mentor for at least 50% of this time. Students are expected to spend approximately 50 hours consolidating learning from clinical placements and preparing for clinical assessments.

Students on both MSc courses will also undertake the Research project module which involves approximately 20 contact hours with their project supervisor(s) and approximately 600 hours self-study.

Assessment

The primary method of assessment for this course is a combination of oral, practical and clinical assessments, written assignments, and written examination. MSc students will also be assessed through a written thesis.

  • Occupational Health Clearance and Disclosure and Barring service (DBS, formerly known as CRB) clearance checks are required.
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and professional indemnity cover (usually provided by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists) are required to undertake the programme.

Through this course you build on your prior learning to develop a critical understanding of contemporary physiotherapy practice. You gain the skills to be a safe, reflective, autonomous, professional practitioner able to manage clients across their lifespan in a variety of settings. Core skills underpinning physiotherapy include manual therapy, therapeutic exercise and functional movement analysis. Appropriate intervention is underpinned by sound clinical reasoning and problem solving within the context of an evidence-based approach to clinical practice.We take a problem-based approach to learning, which includes opportunities to share aspects of learning with students from other allied health professions to promote teamwork and an appreciation of how other disciplines contribute to healthcare. What you study

In Stage 1, you study the core sciences underpinning physiotherapy practice. You are introduced to a range of physiotherapy interventions which are responsive to client need and underpinned by evidence-based approaches to practice. You also explore professional issues in health and social care. During this stage you complete three clinical placements where you assess and treat your own patients under the supervision of qualified physiotherapists. You may be allocated placements within paediatrics, elderly care, learning disabilities and mental health services in addition to acute, medical, musculoskeletal and neurological areas. Clinical placements are arranged by academic tutors and you should be prepared to travel for some placements.

In Stage 2 you complete three more clinical placements. You must complete 1,000 hours of satisfactory clinical practice to meet the requirements of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. You also develop your knowledge of the sciences underpinning physiotherapy and further explore the professional development of the physiotherapist and research methods.

In Stage 3 you complete your dissertation.

This postgraduate programme integrates the advanced clinical, academic and research components of cardiorespiratory physiotherapy practice. The emphasis is on the management of patients with cardiorespiratory disorders. Flexibility in selection of modules allows for physiotherapists with particular interests to be accommodated.

Degree information

This MSc offers physiotherapy students the opportunity to extend their understanding of key areas in this field, including challenging the foundations of established but poorly justified treatments, developing and undertaking clinical research and practice, learning about new and emerging treatment options, and enjoying the mentorship of recognised experts in cardiorespiratory physiotherapy.

Dissertation/report
All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a substantial report and an oral examination.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of teaching and self-directed learning, and includes up to six weeks of clinical placements. Assessment is through clinical assessments, written assignments, oral presentations, multiple choice tests, submission of the literature review and research proposal, assessed coursework, unseen and prior disclosure written examinations, and the dissertation with an oral presentation.

Careers

Recent graduates have pursued careers in academia, research or furthered their clinical practice. For example, acquiring this MSc enabled a student to take up a post as an associate lecturer at Oxford Brookes University and another to be offered a consultant physiotherapy postion at the Royal Free Hospital. Several students have used the MSc as a ‘springboard’ for gaining funding to undertake PhDs at UCL, Great Ormond Street Hospital and King's College London amongst others. Graduates have secured senior positions, such as team lead at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and clinical specialist posts within major London hospitals.

The Master of Physiotherapy (MPhty endorsed) programme endorsed in one of the specialist areas (Acupuncture, Neurorehabilitation, Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy, Occupational Health Physiotherapy or Sports Physiotherapy) aims to advance the student’s clinical reasoning and patient management skills beyond that of the entry level practitioner and provide one of the prerequisites necessary to achieve specialisation. The one-semester research components that may comprise the design and implementation of a small research project, a case series, a data-based clinical review, a systematic review, or a critical review under the supervision of a member of staff, will ensure that the student is research enabled and ready to embrace evidence based practice in the performance of their career.

Alternatively, students can undertake two papers from the approved schedule and a thesis to obtain a research master's (MPhty). The School of Physiotherapy has a strong postgraduate research programme currently supporting numerous master's research students working on topics that range from neurological disorders to anatomical studies. We aim to provide students with a high level of knowledge and experience in order to help them develop their own research skills whether using qualitative or quantitative methodologies for statistical analysis, lab-based studies or community work, prevalence studies or intervention trialling – our aim is to have students complete their master,s confident in their abilities to conduct research and assess relevant literature and practices, whether this leads to PhD study in the future or to more assured clinical practice.

Information for new applicants

This qualification is available to registered physiotherapists. Domestic students must have a current Annual Practising Certificate from the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand. International students must obtain Special Purpose Scope of Practice from the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand before arriving in New Zealand.

For the endorsed Master's, distance based students must be practising physiotherapy whilst undertaking the clinical paper in Year 2 of the programme and should note that some papers involved in this qualification involve attending residential blocks in Dunedin and phoning in on audioconferences. On-campus students will be based at the School of Physiotherapy in Dunedin.

Students enrolling for this programme should take care to enrol for the on-campus or Distance versions of the papers as appropriate.

For the research Master's, students must have a supervisor for the special topic paper and the thesis. For assistance with finding a supervisor please contact the Research Administrator. Before acceptance can be granted applicants must work with their potential supervisor to submit either a draft proposal or a project title with their application.

For the endorsed Master's, students must have a supervisor and submit a draft proposal for the research component 6 months prior to undertaking this paper.

Applications normally close on 31 October, however late applications may be considered.

Subject to approval, the following qualification will replace the Master of Physiotherapy (Manipulative Physiotherapy) from 2013: Master of Physiotherapy (Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy. For information on how to apply for this qualification please contact the Academic Administrator.

Structure of the Programme

The programme shall consist of either:
-PHTY 501 or PHTY 545; PHTY 610, and a thesis embodying the results of one year of full-time or equivalent part-time supervised research (unendorsed option).

A candidate whose qualification for entry to the programme is a Postgraduate Diploma in Physiotherapy or equivalent may be exempted from all or some of the required papers.

A candidate may not present a thesis or dissertation which has previously been accepted for another degree. The programme of study, the topic of the thesis, dissertation, or research project, and the supervisors of the research must be approved by the Board of Studies in Physiotherapy.

This physiotherapy pre-registration, two-year degree has been designed to allow graduates from related subject areas to develop the skills to become competent physiotherapy practitioners. Clinical placements occur in both years and are usually between 2 and 6 weeks' duration. The course also reflects the Government’s commitment to inter-professional learning in health and social care.

The two year physiotherapy course allows students to explore the physical, biological and behavioural sciences that underpin physiotherapy practice and develop critical, analytical, reflective and practical skills that can be applied to a wide variety of clinical situations. Previous undergraduate experiences enables student's to engage in practice with a strong enquiry-based approach. Some shared learning with students from other health and social care professions introduces physiotherapy students to 'team' working in the NHS.

Central to this Physiotherapy course is the development of clinical reasoning and the critical appraisal of evidence-based practice particularly with respect to complex health and social care situations utilising a multi-disciplinary focus. Through critical analysis, contemporary legislation on policy, structure and function of health and social care organisations are considered in addition to how these impact on physiotherapy practice. Students complete a research project supported by an experienced academic research supervisor which draws together much of the critical thinking and has strong links to local clinical practice.

All aspects of the course are learned through an Enquiry-Based Learning approach (EBL), in which students work together and individually to further their comprehension, analysis and application of the material that underpins physiotherapy. Assessments include traditional examinations, poster presentations, group assignments, written assignments, practical assessments and videos.

Graduates find employment in an increasingly diverse range of healthcare settings including the NHS, the private sector, sports clubs and voluntary organisations.

Clinical education is an integral and invaluable component of the programme. It is strongly embedded within the course structure. Preceding campus-based studies provide the skills and knowledge which students require in order to be prepared for their placements.

Continuing modernisation of the NHS has seen a move away from a focus on non-acute health interventions being delivered in hospitals to the delivery of care in the community. Experience gained on all clinical education modules throughout your undergraduate training aims to reflect these developments by providing you with a broad range of experience across a variety of settings including acute NHS hospitals, private healthcare providers, community hospitals, health centres, GP surgeries, schools, nursing homes and sports centres etc.

Regardless of location or specialty students are expected to adopt a holistic approach towards their patient/client, taking into account individual psychological, social, cultural and economic factors, whilst embracing the principles of health promotion and health education.

All clinical placement modules are organised on the student's behalf by the clinical co-ordination team. This allows us to provide you with a balanced clinical experience both in terms of the specialties/patient groups you have worked with and the range of health care setting you have worked in. It is important that you are exposed to a variety of health settings, which are reflective of current clinical practice.

In total students will complete in excess of 1,000 hours of clinical experience in order to complete the programme. Clinical education occurs in six-week blocks which gives you time to "find your feet" and have a highly valuable learning experience at the same time as providing you with plenty of opportunity to demonstrate your learning and develop as a clinician.

It is anticipated that whilst on clinical placement you will be working a 34-hour week minimum, (compared to full-time workers this effectively means you have one half-day off per week). However, the number of hours you work and the time at which you start and finish work is subject to negotiation with both college and the supervising clinical educator.

Whilst on placements you will be supervised by physiotherapists registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Students will be assessed on placement by their supervising clinician(s), using a standardized assessment tool – the Clinical Assessment Record (CAR form). The assessment score from clinical placement modules will contribute to your final degree classification

Most clinical placements are located within the Greater London area, ie within the M25, but a few could be further away necessitating "staying over on placement" during the week. You should anticipate the need to "stay over" on at least one or two occasions.

We are sympathetic to your needs when we assign clinical placements. However, we are unable to guarantee that any student will be located close to their home or term-time address and you may have to commute or live away from home for the duration of a placement or two. We do try to give special consideration to students whose personal circumstances fall within specified criteria, ie they have young children, are a main carer, or have a declared disability etc.

If the NHS is paying your university fees, your travel costs (in excess of the expense you normally incur between home and college) and if necessary the costs of alternative accommodation can be reclaimed from the NHS. However you should note that they is always a delay between paying out money and being reimbursed which can create temporary cash-flow issues.

Professional recognition

This course is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and accredited by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. Graduates are eligible to apply to register with the HCPC and apply to become members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. You must be registered with the HCPC in order to practise as a physiotherapist in the UK.

On completion of the intermediate awards - PgDiploma/PgCertificate in Rehabilitation, you will not be eligible to apply for HCPC registration as a Physiotherapist.

Our Master of Physiotherapy provides you with the specialised knowledge for a successful career in a range of different areas. Whether you decide to work in the public hospital setting or private practice, you will be armed with the skills to meet the unique needs of clients and enhance the health and welfare of the wider community.

Study a Master of Physiotherapy at UC and you will:

Professional Accreditation

The course has been accredited by the Australian Physiotherapy Council. Graduates of the Master of Physiotherapy are eligible for registration as a Physiotherapist by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. 

For professional Physiotherapy registration with APHRA, IELTS is required for anyone who did not complete high school in Australia, England, Ireland, New Zealand, USA, Canada or South Africa, as opposed to the University requirements where IELTS is only required for those who have not studied in an English speaking country.

MSc Advanced Physiotherapy is an advanced programme of study for registered and qualified Physiotherapists.

Under this main programme of study, there are five specialist areas where our students can direct their focus and develop their professional practice:
-Physiotherapy focus
-Musculoskeletal Therapy focus
-Neurological Therapy focus
-Cardio-respiratory Therapy focus
-Manual Therapy focus (provides eligibility for MACP membership)

However, no matter whether students choose to focus on one or many of the different specialist areas of focus above, you will graduate with an MSc Advanced Physiotherapy.

Each of these areas consists of core units which must be taken in order for you to achieve the academic standards required to successfully complete your programme and be eligible to be awarded an MSc degree by the University. In addition, there are a range of optional units which can be taken to improve your professional practice or develop specialist skills in a particular area.

Some of these units may be delivered by other Master’s programmes within the University. This not only widens the variety of units, which you can study but also offers the potential for multi-professional education and professional study.

Whilst there is freedom to choose a range of units, which interest the student and develop multi-professional practice, Advanced Physiotherapy units must form two thirds of your final credits in order to successfully graduate from the programme.

This is a flexible programme of study and can be delivered on a modular basis as a full or part time programme. All units of study provide academic credits, which are built up to offer exit routes at the following stages:
-180 credits: MSc Advanced Physiotherapy
-120 credits: PgDip Advanced Physiotherapy
-60 credits: PgCert Advanced Physiotherapy

About the Course

The programme contains units in several clinical specialities including: physiotherapy; cardio-respiratory therapy; manual therapy; musculoskeletal therapy and neurological therapy. These units have been developed after consultation with students, other practitioners and service managers and are intended to equip the student/practitioner with the skills to develop their practice at a unit and organisational level.

Features and benefits of the course

-Full time students have up to 15 months to complete the course, taught units should be completed within 12 months.
-Part time students must undertake a minimum of one unit per year
-All students must take either the Dissertation or the Advanced Physiotherapy Project Unit. Students cannot take both.
-The Manual Therapy focus provides eligibility for membership of the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (MACP).
-Most modules can be taken as stand-alone units. By this we mean that they can be studied on their own merit providing evidence for your CPD portfolio or they can form part of the credits required to gain a master’s level qualification.
-This programme is accredited by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
-Access to state of the art Clinical Skills laboratories and Simulation Suites
-Students can focus on particular areas of specialist study, Musculoskeletal, Neurological Therapy, Cardio-respiratory, Physiotherapy or Manual Therapy
